Hummelstown Invites Residents, Business Owners To See Their Names In Bricks BY FRANCINE FULTON
Hummelstown-area residents and businesses owners have an opportunity to permanently inscribe their names on bricks that will be placed in one of the area’s parks. As part of the Hummelstown Parks Brick Fundraiser, individuals or families may purchase a brick, which they can engrave with their
family name or designate in honor of or in memory of their loved ones. The bricks are designed to be a lasting tribute to local residents, along with their children, grandchildren, parents, other relatives or friends whose names they may choose to include on the bricks. Bricks may also be purchased by businesses, but only the business name will be included. See Bricks pg 4

from 1 to 6 p.m. All activities are free, and the community is welcome to attend. The day will also include a concert at 4:30 p.m. by Ricky Murphy, who will perform contemporary Christian music. Murphy has been part of a Southern gospel band in the past and is currently in a Christian rock band in which he sings and plays acoustic guitar and keyboard. He performs on his own as well, sharing his love of God in music ministry. “If one soul is touched by what I have to share, it’s all worth it,” he stated. “I love to share what the Lord has shared with me.” Attendees are asked to bring blankets or chairs for seating during the concert. The church had held a Fall Festival in the past,
and this year the activity was revived by the church, which is under the new leadership of interim pastor John Sharpless. “We are opening it to the community as an outreach to bring people to our church,” said church board member Susan Crawford, event organizer. Activities will take place in the large field behind the church, where there will be games on the volleyball and basketball courts and cornhole games. Hot dogs, nachos, s’mores and beverages will be offered at no cost. The Fall Festival will be held rain or shine. The church also recently announced that it will be a designated drop-off location for Operation Christmas Child (OCC), which provides shoeboxes filled with gifts to children in need worldwide. OCC is held annually by Samaritan’s Purse, a Christian relief organization.

Church from pg 1 The community is invited to participate in the effort by gathering small toys, personal care items and school supplies and placing them in a shoebox during National Collection Week, which will take place this year from Monday, Nov. 15, through Monday, Nov. 22. Boxes can be dropped off at the Hershey Church of the Nazarene on the following dates: Nov. 15 from 5 to 8 p.m.; Tuesday, Nov. 16, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Wednesday, Nov. 17, through Friday, Nov. 19, from 5 to 8 p.m.; Saturday, Nov. 20, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Sunday, Nov. 21, from 1 to 4 p.m.; and Nov. 22 from 7 to 9 a.m. In 2020, the church collected 2,336 boxes, which included 130 boxes packed by volunteers during a packing party held at the church. “(We receive boxes) from other
churches, individuals and organizations,” Crawford noted. “We collect between 2,000 and 3,000 boxes each year.” The boxes eventually make their way to Baltimore, one of eight shoebox processing centers in the United States. “We (rent a U-Haul) to transport them to a distribution center in Carlisle. From there, they go to Baltimore,” Crawford said, adding that she and other congregation members have volunteered in Baltimore. “It was an amazing opportunity to (help). We have a small congregation, but we are a very giving church.” For more information about the Fall Festival or the OCC collection, visit www.facebook.com/hershey churchofthenazarene or call 717-534-2010.

As part of a schoolwide mission project, which is being led by the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS), students will collect items to fill the shoeboxes through Friday, Nov. 12. Each class has been asked to donate certain necessities to be included in the boxes, such as socks and toothbrushes. The students’ goal this year is to send 40 boxes filled with donations. NJHS adviser Josh Koch said that this is the second year for this project, noting that students are educated about OCC before being asked to donate items. “The students know that these boxes are distributed throughout the world to children in need,” he said. Typically, shoeboxes contain toys, such as dolls, finger puppets and foam balls; personal care items, such as washcloths, hairbrushes and combs; and craft items, including coloring books, pens and pencils and stickers. OCC requests that each box also contain a “wow” item. “The (NJHS) members will use monies collected through a variety of fundraisers to offset the cost of shipping each box,” Koch explained. “These monies will also be used to include a ‘wow’ item for each box.” “Wow” items could be a small stuffed animal, a foot-

The Arc Lancaster Lebanon will again host the Arc Angel Holiday Project for the upcoming holiday season. In collaboration with Lancaster County Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (BHDS), The Arc Lancaster Lebanon connects community givers with children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities or autism who need holiday gifts. The Arc receives wishes for gift cards from individuals
who will not receive gifts during the holidays due to limited resources or limited family and friend supports. These specific gift card wishes are passed along to each volunteer Angel for purchasing and then returned to The Arc for distribution to the individuals in need. To volunteer as an Angel and learn more about how the Holiday Project works, contact Amy Austin at 717-394-5251 or amy@thearclancleb.org.

More than 400 participants gathered at Harrisburg City Island on the afternoon of Sept. 19 for the annual Capital Region Heart Walk. Although the event had fewer participants than in previous years, it raised over $326,000 for the American Heart Association, an organization focused on heart and brain health for all, while promoting physical and mental health through healthy habits. The participants included heart disease survivors and their family members, who wore their commemorative Heart Walk baseball caps and Heart Hero capes, as well as local company teams. The teams from TE Connectivity and Weis Markets led as the top fundraising companies. The star of this year’s Heart Walk was 4-year-old congenital heart defect survivor Niko Mesich from Boiling Springs. Niko was diagnosed with congenital heart defects, including unicuspid aortic valve, aortic valve stenosis and mitral valve regurgitation, when he was born in August 2017. He underwent his first open heart surgery to reconstruct his aortic valve at just 14 days old and his second open heart surgery to correct the mitral valve and
further open the aortic valve at 7 weeks old. After sharing their story, the Mesich family members led walkers to the start line to kick off the walk around City Island. Walkers had the option to continue walking across the bridge to Riverfront Park and back to extend their walk to a 5K. Supporters who were unable to attend the Heart Walk in person were encouraged to walk on their own path. The American Heart Association encourages anyone who wishes to support the Heart Walk, but was unable to attend the event in person, to walk where they are and share their walk on social media using #HbgHeartWalk. The funds raised at events like the Heart Walk support the American Heart Association’s mission, including advocating for public policy to improve community health, advancing the science of CPR, improving outcomes for heart and stroke patients, and investing in cardiovascular research that has led to life-saving advancements in prevention, treatment and rehabilitation.
