Holiday Tree Lighting Set In Campbelltown On Nov. 4, a 10-foot Norway spruce was planted in the Campbelltown Community Park, located between Lawn Road and the fire company. The tree is the start of a new tradition in Campbelltown, a Holiday Tree Lighting event hosted by Campbelltown Community Alliance (CCA). Contributions from Palmyra Area Business Association, local businesses, and individuals from the community have made this event possible. The Village of Campbelltown’s inaugural Holiday Tree Lighting event will take place on Sunday, Dec. 1,

from 5 to 7 p.m. It will start at the park with the lighting of the tree and Christmas carols. Festivities will follow at the fire company. Free family activities and offerings will include hot cocoa, cookies, crafts, games, and a visit from Santa. Community members are invited to help decorate the tree by putting their name on an ornament for a fee. All proceeds will go to the Campbelltown Volunteer Fire Company. For more information, readers may email campbelltowncommunity alliance@gmail.com.

How Small Businesses Give Back Immersed In An Interactive Wonderland in communities. Local businesses keep disposable income and tax money within their communities. Business tax money remains local and can support schools, roads, and municipal services. Local small businesses help to keep cities and towns prosperous and humming along. Such establishments can help build a sense of community and forge lasting relationships. Small businesses are the lifeblood of many communities. In the United States, the majority of businesses in operation are classified as small businesses, according to data from the Small Business Administration. Consumers can express their appreciation for the small businesses in their communities in various ways. Here are eight ways to support local businesses: 1. Shop at small businesses regularly. 2 . Use social media to give your recommendations on small businesses that go above and beyond in quality and service. 3. Speak with business owners about your experience as a customer, sharing insight about both good and bad experiences. 4. Encourage your family or friends to make small business shopping a larger part of their overall spending plan. 5 . Think of small business sponsorships when putting together school- or club-based fundraisers. 6. If you own a small business, keep business cards, flyers, or a sign advertising another small business in the area to show mutual support. 7. Invite small business owners to community activity centers, nursing homes, schools, and the like to share their experiences about starting a business in the area. 8. Participate in community events that may be sponsored by small business owners.

The Train Guys Prepare Holiday Exhibit By Chelsea Peifer

The Train Guys are back at work setting up an elaborate, interactive miniature train display for the public in the lower level of the Elizabethtown Public Library, 10 S. Market St., Elizabethtown. The group of approximately 20 volunteers began construction in mid-October for the final product to make its public debut from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 3. “We think for a temporary Christmas display that this is the biggest on the East Coast,” said Train Guy Craig Coble. O-gauge trains run through detailed towns decorated for the holidays, and G-scale and standardgauge trains and accessories are also featured. The interactive elements of the display, which has upwards of 50 push buttons, are one of the things that Coble said visitors tend to most appreciate. Several new push button accessories have been added for 2019, as well as new track loops, a third level of track, a police station, a flying saucer abducting a cow, and enhancements to the

perennially popular circus setup. “Last year was our best year ever. We had well over 4,600 visitors, and we’re hoping for even more this year,” Coble stated. Costumed greeters - such as a railroad police officer and an engineer - track attendance and interact with guests at the event. Historical Elizabethtown buildings are part of the setup, such as a miniature version of the Klein Chocolate Company stadium, which was built in Elizabethtown in 1919. “Most of the volunteers have a lot of history knowledge, whether it’s about real railroads, toy trains, or Elizabethtown itself,” noted Coble. “And all of those pieces of history link to so many others.” Volunteer John Gantz worked for Amtrak for 33 and a half years and has been part of The Train Guys for seven years. “It’s all about the kids,” said Gantz. “It’s good for me to be with a good group of guys here and just seeing the kids enjoy it all every year.”

The Train Guys, dedicated volunteers ranging from teenagers to retirees, invite the public to view an interactive miniature train display in the lower level of the Elizabethtown Public Library on select dates from Dec. 3 through 30. Admission is by donation, with all proceeds benefiting the library.

Aidan Mollohan, 17, said that this is his sixth year helping The Train Guys. He plans to pursue a career as a mechanical engineer and has been able to glean wisdom from engineers among the crew. “It’s also helped me to learn a lot about carpentry and wiring. A number of our members are electricians,” Aidan commented. Retired industrial arts teacher Ken Stehman has enjoyed working with The Train Guys since he was recruited by Coble seven years ago. “I just enjoy tinkering with things and the problem solving that’s involved,” said Stehman. “We always end up with new challenges, because it’s never the same layout.” The 2019 display will be open from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays in December; from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, Dec. 7, 14, and 21; and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 28. The Krypton Cougars, a high school robotics team based in Palmyra, competed at the HAVOC offseason competition at Hatboro-Horsham High School on Oct. 26. Composed of high school students from Palmyra, Hershey, and Northern Lebanon, as well as homeschool students, the Krypton Cougars compete in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition (FRC). After completing the 2019 regular season with a trip to the World’s Championship in Detroit in April, the team entered several

local offseason competitions to develop new members. To enhance the training process, Team 2539 decided to build a completely different second robot for competition to allow more students to compete, referring to it as Team 9539. At HAVOC, the two Krypton Cougar robots qualified first and third out of a field of 29 robots. This allowed them both to become captains of their respective three team alliances to compete in playoffs. Both teams continued winning and advancing in the playoffs until their alliances faced off in the best-out-of-three

championship round. Team 9539’s No. 3 Alliance defeated Team 2539’s No. 1 Alliance in two straight matches to earn the winner trophy, with Team 2539 earning the finalist trophy. After one more off-season competition, Team 2539 will be looking to start the 2020 FRC season with a kickoff party on Saturday, Jan. 4. New members, mentors, and sponsors are encouraged to join Team 2539 and learn about FIRST Robotics. More information is available at www.team2539.com/ and www.facebook.com/FIRST Team2539/ or by emailing kryptoncougars2539@gmail.com.

LLPTA Announces Road-e-o Results The Lancaster-Lebanon Pupil Transportation Association (LLPTA) has announced the results of the 44th annual School Bus Road-e-o, which was held at Cocalico High School on Oct. 19. Competing in the event were 31 school bus drivers from Lancaster and Lebanon counties. The competition includes a written exam, which is followed by a skills competition where competitors are scored as they negotiate a 10-station obstacle course while behind the wheel of a school bus. The grand champion was Michael Webster of Cornwall Lebanon School District/Brightbill Transporation. Second place went to Angie Martin of Pequea Valley School District/Brightbill Transportation, and third place went to Diane Pinney of Conestoga Valley School District/Brightbill Transportation. Dania Clifford of Eastern Lancaster County School District/Brightbill Transportation placed fourth, and Shawn Stickler of Eastern Lebanon County School District/Brightbill Transportation placed fifth. The LLPTA Road-e-o is designed to promote and encourage school bus safety among school bus drivers in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. The event determines the local representatives at the state safety competition, which will be held in State College in June 2020.
