North Museum of Nature and Science, 400 College Ave., Lancaster, is planning a trip to Pittsburgh on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 11 and 12, to visit one of just four museums in the country to host “Destination Moon: The Apollo 11 Mission,” hosted by the Heinz History Center in partnership with the Smithsonian in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the mission. The exhibition was created by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service. “Destination Moon” takes visitors on an in-depth exploration of the Apollo 11 mission, the birth of the American space program, and the space race. Attendees will also be able to see the Command Module Columbia. Columbia is the only portion of the Apollo 11 spacecraft to complete the first mission to
land a man on the moon and safely return him to Earth. This is the first time in 50 years that Columbia has left the Smithsonian. More than 100 artifacts, including many used by the Apollo 11 crew of Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong, and Michael Collins, will also be on display. In addition to the visit to see the Apollo 11 memorabilia, North Museum guests will also enjoy guided tours of the Phipps Conservatory and either the Andy Warhol Museum or the Carnegie Science Center. Included in the trip is an overnight stay at the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort. There is a cost for the trip, in addition to food expenses. The trip cost includes transportation and admission to the museums. Readers may call Willa Adams at 717-358-4712 for more information and to sign up.

Help Desk students earn credits and work under the direction of Penn Manor’s professional information technology staff. “I think this course has really expanded their programming passion beyond a hobby,” Kostelich said. “Plus, the students are now bonding and using their programming experience to do some really cool projects. Bright futures are in store for this group.” For their second-place finish, the students received prizes valued at $600, including a computer monitor, smartglasses that record video, and wireless headphones. A team of students from Penn Manor and Hempfield high schools was a top finisher in a statewide hacking competition held recently at Hershey High School. Penn Manor sophomores Kyler Stigelman and Aidan Lewis and senior Tristen Martin, along with Hempfield sophomore Michael Pagano, placed second overall in HackHershey, a 12hour programming competition that attracted 21 student teams from across Pennsylvania. The projects were judged on originality, technical difficulty, polish, and usefulness. The Penn Manor/Hempfield team developed an app called Face2Password that uses facial recognition software to assist people who forget their passwords. “The team had a fully working program completed in less than 10 hours, which was really impressive,” said Gina Kostelich, Penn Manor Student Help Desk specialist, who helped prepare Team Face2Password for the competition. Christmas Trees from pg 1 Trees from the nursery are utilized throughout the county park system. Moss, a former professor at Franklin & Marshall College and a founding member of the Lancaster Environmental Action Federation (LEAF), worked to promote the conservation of natural resources for the improvement of the environment of Lancaster County’s public parks and open spaces. According to park officials, residents drop off about 1,500 Christmas trees each year, which produce 22 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas, as well as many deciduous ornamental trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic soil conditions. The mulch will be available to residents on a first-come, first-served basis after Friday, Jan. 4, near the tree drop-off site. Persons desiring

“Our staff encourages residents to pursue hobbies and interests that they enjoyed prior to their move to Homestead Village, as well as to explore new interests and pastimes,” said Tawana Winder Nock, administrator of personal care at Homestead Village. “Completing the resident ‘Life Story’ survey prior to move-in assists staff in planning and preparing experiences that will help this new environment become home.” Homestead Village representatives asserted that it is an honor to provide resources and serve residents and families during the difficult journey of memory loss. As noted in a recent Homestead Village blog post, “A diagnosis of dementia or Alzheimer’s, whether generalized or related to other diseases like Parkinson’s, is frightening and also causes stress and uncertainty for the individual’s loved ones. In planning out the details, Ketcham’s goal is to make the experience as overthe-top and memorable as possible for each person who attends. “We have about 12 churches that partner with us now, and we try to knock it out of the park. Night to Shine events will be hosted by approximately 700 churches around the world on the same date, and Ketcham emphasized that everything is made possible through donations and volunteer efforts. “We get a lot of thank-yous from the parents and guests,” Ketcham shared. “Some have said that this is the first time their child has gotten to do something normal that was just for them. A lot of people just talk about the unconditional love that they felt.” Volunteers are needed for the Night to Shine event, and interested individuals may sign up at https://gbclancaster.org/night2 shine, where they will have the option to select their top three choices for ways to serve. Lititz recCenter Aims To Help Families Get Moving During the fall, Simon Ababou, fitness director at the Lititz recCenter, 301 W. Maple St., Lititz, had an idea to motivate children and their parents to help each other work toward a better fitness level. Ababou introduced the idea to three rec center instructors. “They said, ‘Let’s do it,’” recalled Ababou. The result will be a new program, recFamilyFit, offered each Monday from 5:15 to 6 p.m. from Jan. 7 to Feb. 18. The class will be open to parents and grandparents and to children ages 5 to 12. The class will be designed to help reduce stress, and the program will offer weekly options for other rec center offerings. According to Ababou, instructors Kira Talbot, Elsbeth West, and Jamie Hoffman will start the Monday class with relaxation, yoga, stretching, Pilates, and breathing techniques to help the children and parents release stress. After 15 minutes of stress reduction, the class will turn to physical activities like fitness games, which may include the use of small weights, hula hoops, and
other equipment. “We want to get parents and children to work out together,” explained Ababou, who added that other optional activities will be included with the class. Among these will be a Zumba party night on the second Friday of each month from 6 to 7 p.m. and a Les Mills Virtual Sh’Bam class each Friday from 4:45 to 5:30 p.m. Children ages 7 to 12 who participate in recFamilyFit will also be eligible to take Boxing for Kids, which is held each Tuesday from 5:15 to 6 p.m. Participants will also receive information about ways to improve their health. “There will be nutrition tips, links, and handouts about wellness or a healthy lifestyle,” said Ababou. At the end of the session, class members will receive goodie bags filled with coupons for program discounts. The class is an extension of the rec center’s mission, which includes motivating people of all ages to exercise and live a healthy lifestyle. According to the rec center, families that take part in physical activity and choose nutritious foods may reap benefits of better

Children ages 5 to 12 and their parents and grandparents are invited to take part in the recFamilyFit program offered each Monday from 5:15 to 6 p.m. from Jan. 7 to Feb. 18 at the Lititz recCenter. The program is aimed at helping families to relieve stress and develop a healthy lifestyle together. health and enjoying quality time together. Developing healthy habits can lead to weight loss, stress reduction, better school performance, and disease prevention. Ababou acknowledged that the modern family’s busy lifestyle, use of technology, and stress exacerbated by current events can all work against development of healthy behaviors. Weather is also
a factor. “Our goal is to keep them (active) during the winter when it’s hard to be outside in the cold,” said Ababou. “Children sometimes get bored, so they can come here to do things.” Those wishing to participate may register by calling the center at 717-626-5096, visiting www.lititzrec.com, or stopping by the front desk at the rec center.

On Nov. 20, Landisville Middle School (LMS) celebrated a longstanding tradition, the Acts of Kindness experience. Faculty and students planned a morning of events to involve students in efforts and activities to benefit others, the community, and the environment. Activities included making dream catchers for adults and children in area homeless shelters, making coloring books and activity books for children in need, preparing gifts and treats for local shelters, making placemats for residents in area hospitals and hospices, and playing board games with senior citizens. Some students helped beautify the Landisville campus by raking leaves.
Other students wrote letters of thanks and encouragement to men and women in the armed services, to rescue workers, and to friends and family. Some groups organized materials for the public library. In addition, as part of this biennial Acts of Kindness day, LMS collaborated with students from the Landisville Primary and Landisville Intermediate centers. LMS students were partnered with first- and fifth-graders, as well as other elementary students, to lead them through fun activities, perform community service, or create cards and crafts for children and adults in need. Some LMS students also led younger students through STEM lessons.
