30 years of elevating education
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
S
ince 1993, the Hempfield Foundation has worked to support students and teachers alike by consistently providing a wide range of grants and scholarships. As it closes the chapter on 2023, the foundation is reflecting on three decades of educational enrichment initiatives and looking ahead to its goals for the new year.
One of the Hempfield Foundation’s primary goals is to provide opportunities for students in the Hempfield School District to excel regardless of their pursuits. The organization awards numerous grants to educators at each grade level, from second-grade art classes to high school science courses. Grants are also frequently used to reinforce the school district’s many extracurricular programs, including
theater departments and STEM competitions. In 2023, the Hempfield Foundation awarded dozens of grants to teachers and staff members throughout the school district, totaling more than $81,000. Projects made possible by Hempfield Foundation grants last year include the creation of a podcast production studio and an entrepreneurship center at Hempfield High School, emotional management kits
for students at East Petersburg Elementary School and book publishing tools at Landisville Primary Center. In addition to suppor ting children in the classroom, the Hempfield Foundation seeks to set students up for success as they embark on their next stage in education. In May, the foundation awarded $26,500 in scholarships to graduating seniors at Hempfield High School. See Hempfield Foundation pg 5
In 1956, a member of Ascension Lutheran Church i n Da nv i l l e , Va . , c re a t e d the first set of Chrismons. The word Chrismon is the combination of the words “Christ” and “monogram,” and it describes a unique type of Christmas tree ornament. Although the evergreen tree already signifies Christians’ belief in eternal life, Chrismons further emphasize this theme in multiple ways. Standard Christmas tree ornaments often incorporate elaborate color schemes and eye-catching materials into their designs, and they come in endless shapes and sizes. Many people personalize their tree with ornaments made from pictures of family members or crafts assembled by their children at school. In contrast to common decorations, a Chrismon is only painted white and uses a minimalist design to represent a singular aspect of Jesus Christ’s life or His teachings. The symbolic ornaments are typically used in combination with exclusively white and gold lights to embellish a Christmas tree. After several decades, the tradition of decorating a tree with Chrismons has spread beyond the Lutheran Church; it has been adopted by Anglicans, Catholics, Methodists and other Christian communities. Jane Kintzi, a member of Wayside Presbyterian Church in Landisville, introduced the holiday custom to her congregation See Chrismons pg 4

When a library is named after you, you know you’re doing something right. There’s a library and technology center located in Danli, Honduras, that bears the name of local Rotarian and East Hempfield Township resident Dave Lawrence. Biblioteca Dave Lawrence was dedicated in the waning days of last year. “ W hen I first found out about it, I was totally shocked and surprised,” said Lawrence. “They tried to keep it a secret. No one mentioned anything to me. It’ll be there long after I’m gone. The people who I’ve met down there are friends now.” In cooperation with the local Rotary Club in Danli, the library and technology and education center was named in Lawrence’s honor to recognize his overall altruistic contributions to the area, his direct efforts in constructing the library and the $12,000 donated by the Lancaster Sunr is e R o tar y C lub, of which Lawrence is a member, to fund the project. The library was built right next to a school in Danli that serves students in kindergarten through eighth grade. “We basically focus on water, medical, dental needs and construction,” said Lawrence, a 68-yearold third-generation Rotarian. “ T hese kids have nothing. The only
hope for their future is education. The health care helps. But this is something happening in their village, and when they find out about it, it’s like, How can I help?’ It’s awesome to see. I don’t speak Spanish, but I’ve always been able to communicate, especially with the kids.” A native of Vermont, Lawrence moved to Lancaster County in 2012. His involvement with a Rotary Club there has continued through Lancaster Sunrise Rotary Club. This month, Lawrence will be making his 16th mission trip to Danli, accompanied by a handful of other local Rotarians. “ They ’re all community improvement-type projects,” said Lawrence. “I just call it a grounding exper ience because it shows you the difference between what you want and what you need. These people have nothing, but they have great attitudes. There’s just something to it that makes me want to go back every year.” “ We’ve gone back to schools we built earlier and put additions on,” he added. “It’s kind of doing the same things ever y time, but with different people and different projects. I look at it like, What else can I do? Just tell me what to do.’” Operating under the motto of “Service Above Self,” the Lancaster Sunshine Rotary Club, which

is a great organization that’s well run and well organized.” “I really enjoy helping people,” Lawrence continued. “ T hey ’re ver y appreciative. Chrismons from pg 1 in December 2022. Kintzi and a group of fellow Wayside members gathered throughout the year to craft six unique Chrismons, representing an angel, a star, a lamb, a manger, a cross and a crown. Certain members of Wayside supplemented the making of the Chrismons by creating a devotional b o ok le t to accompany the project. Congregation member Debbi Posts led a group of writers, editors and artists in an effort to interpret each symbol and complement its meaning via personal commentary and biblical research. Steve Fritz, Wayside’s pastor, structured his sermons for the Christmas season to highlight a specific Chrismon on each Sunday in Advent. Fritz discussed the Scriptural origin of the symbol, its theological interpretation and how its meaning can be applied to practical ministry. The series concluded with a service on Jan. 7 that coincided with the celebration of the Epiphany, when the magi visited the Christ child. Fritz’s sermon explored the meaning of final Chrismon: the crown. In addition to hig h-

lighting a Chrismon, the Advent services at Wayside featured hymns that accompanied their themes, and related imagery was displayed in the church. During each ser vice, the Chrismon itself was brought to the front of the room and placed by a child from the congregation. “The Chrismons depict the entire life of Jesus, from cradle to cross to crown,” Fritz said. “Instead of a baby bootie or a round glass ornament, we use them to tell the story of the nature of God and the nature of the ministry of Jesus Christ.”
Field of Screams presents donations F i e l d o f S c re a m s , a local haunted attraction, presented checks totaling $13,440 to two Ronald McDonald House Charities Chapters on Nov. 30. A total of $10,440 of the check went directly to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Pennsylvania (RMHC-CP) and $2,700 of the check went directly to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northeastern PA. Field of Screams works with a large number of charities every year and has been partnering with Ronald McDonald House Charities since 2009. Since this time, Field of Screams has donated $157,160 to Ronald McDonald House Charities Chapters. The Ronald McDonald House was built on the idea that nothing else should matter when a family is focused on the health of
their child, not where they can afford to stay, where they will get their next meal or where they will lay their head at night. All its programs are free to families, including the Ronald McDonald House in Hershey, the Ronald McDonald Family Room and Hospitality Cart at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital and the Ronald McDonald Hospitality Kiosk at Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health. Therefore, the charity relies on the community’s generosity to keep its services free for families who need them. Keeping a family together for one night at the Ronald McDonald House in Hershey costs approximately $100. The Field of Screams donation will provide more than 100 family overnight stays this year.

Hempfield Foundation from pg 1 In October, the Hempfield Foundation ventured into new territory by welcoming two student representatives to its board of directors. Hempfield High School students Alexandra Gregory and Tobin Marco were selected to offer their perspective on the school district’s needs, and they began to fulfill their duties by attending regular board meetings. In the coming year, Gregory and Marco will complete various outreach assignments from the board, such as following up with grant recipients to see
the impact of their projects in the classroom. The student representatives will also be able to share their insight with the Hempfield Foundation as it prepares to choose the next round of grant recipients. “With (Gregory and Marco) being the first student representatives, there’s some learning on both sides. But they have been fully engaged with meetings, and they will have a key role in sharing their input on our ideas,” said Scott Bishop, executive director of the Hempfield Foundation.
A fter the Hempfield Woman’s Club disbanded in September, the Hempfield Foundation used the group’s final donation to create the Hempfield Woman’s Club Legacy Fund. The fund will be used annually to fund specific teacher grants to honor the club’s contributions to the community since its creation in 1965. Through a partnership with Penn State Health, the Hempfield Foundation is able to continue to provide resources for several classrooms and special
