ZION Musik Series Will Feature Flute Choir By Dayna M. Reidenouer
“It is my desire to share my love of music with others,” said James Alfieri, newly appointed director of music and worship arts at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 85 E. Brandt Blvd., Landisville. As such, Alfieri has created ZION Musik, a concert series that will kick off on Sunday, Feb. 24, at 4 p.m. with a performance by the Pennsylvania Flute Choir. “The goal and aim of the concert series stems from Martin Luther’s quote: ‘Next to the Word of God, music deserves the highest praise,’” Alfieri said, adding that “musik” is the German word for “music” and was used in the name of the series to reflect Luther’s German origins. “I feel that a concert series such as ZION Musik is a perfect way to complement the church’s music
program, provide a community outreach, and present a wide variety of outstanding quality music to the Lancaster area,” he stated. Alfieri also noted that he wants to promote and highlight the talents of outstanding local musicians and inspire aspiring instrumentalists. He is excited about welcoming the Pennsylvania Flute Choir to Zion. “I can imagine the lofty sounds of the flutes soaring to the heavens in the marvelous acoustics of our sanctuary,” Alfieri remarked. “I also hope those in attendance will learn something new about this unique instrument.” As its name suggests, the Pennsylvania Flute Choir is dedicated to the promotion and performance of the flute in all its ranges and iterations. It is an auditioned community group that was formed as a one-time recital group in See ZION Musik pg 6

Public Forum from pg 1 By Dayna M. Reidenouer
The hopes, wishes, and, yes, gripes of trail users will be heard at a public forum on Saturday, March 16, at the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia. Registration will open at 8:30 a.m., and the program will run from 9 to 11 a.m.
Lydia Martin, director of education and engagement for the Lancaster County Conservancy, is also a member of the Pennsylvania Trails Advisory Committee, which is part of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), and she sits on several local rail trail committees. Thus, it seemed fitting to Martin that she organize a forum during which individuals and organizations can engage in conversation about trails, whether they be used by hikers,
birders, equestrians, cyclists, or others. “The (Pennsylvania Trails Advisory Committee) focuses on all trails,” Martin said. “The forum is for all users, not just folks who sit on boards. It’s exciting to see the interest come from all levels.” Representatives of DCNR are slated to attend, as are representatives from Keystone Trails Association, Mason-Dixon Trail System, Northwest River Trail, Rail Trail Advisory Committee, and
Susquehanna Heritage. These folks want to hear what trail users have to say, and they will help to facilitate small group discussions on a range of topics. Martin suggested that the topics will include the management, rehabilitation, and maintenance of existing trails; the planning, construction, and management of new trails; access to trails and the use of public lands; funding trails at the municipal, county, and state levels; public-private partnerships and community outreach; and partnerships and collaboration among conservation, service, and trail organizations. “To enhance the experience of users takes planning,” Martin pointed out. “The (goal) of the forum is to help (organizations)
make good decisions about trails in the future.” Martin envisions the forum as a mix of casual interaction and focused discussion. Attendees will move from table to table for the small group discussions. “It should be fun and engaging,” Martin said. “ We’re all coming together for our love and passion for trails.” If the event is successful, Martin said she hopes to host a follow-up forum so the public can learn about the results of the March 16 forum and hear about how the results have impacted trail development and management. There is no cost to attend the forum, although donations will be accepted. Light refreshments
will be provided. Weather permitting, folks may stay after the forum to hike the Northwest River Trail. Seating at the forum is limited to 60 people. To reserve a seat, folks should register at www.eventbrite.com by searching for “PA Trails Advisory Committee & Partners Public Trail Forum.” For more information about the event, readers may contact Martin at 717-392-7891, ext. 215, or lmartin@lancaster conservancy.org. Pictured on front: A public
trails forum will be held on March 16 at the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center. Space is limited, so attendees must register in advance.

struggle to meet basic needs. Each day, many poor and needy parents have to decide whether to prepare a single meal for their family or to pay the fees necessary to send their children to school.” To alleviate some of the impoverished Ghanaians’ physical needs and to lighten their spiritual burdens as well, Ghana Initiative has sent medical teams throughout the country for more than five years. The teams of Ghanaians and Americans provide muchneeded health care at no cost while striving to share God’s love with everyone they meet. As reported in a recent ministry newsletter, UNICEF’s statistics show that malaria, an insect-borne disease, contributes to the death of approximately 20,000 children every year. During medical clinics in 2018, Ghana Initiative volunteers distributed insecticide-treated nets purchased from UNICEF to more than 1,000 homes in the eastern region of Ghana in an effort to cut down on the prevalence of malaria. Volunteers also gave away tooth care kits and toothbrushes, books, crayons and other school supplies, soccer cleats, clothing, hair
supplies, and knitted dolls. Prescription eyewear and sunglasses were distributed during eye clinics. Ghana Initiative has also begun to build a missionary training center near one of the towns it regularly serves. The venue will include a warehouse for supplies, a classroom, a dormitory, and a ministry office. The facility will be used to train Ghanaians and other West Africans to enter the missionary field or become pastors. To make all of this happen, Ghana Initiative relies on the support from individuals and businesses, and it also hosts an annual banquet and benefit auction. This

LMS, Kraybill Announce Agreement After 12 years of recent shared ownership, Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS) and Kraybill Mennonite School have announced a new beginning. Both parties signed an agreement on Nov. 9, 2018, stating that Kraybill Mennonite School will become fully independent again beginning on Monday, July 1, 2019. Kraybill Mennonite and LMS have a 4 0 - year history of working together, at points independently and at other times jointly. Kraybill Mennonite School sought independent status in March 2018 after LMS shared the need to combine grade levels or close the campus due to decreased enrollment. The Kraybill community united in support of continued operation of the school and its mission. Desiring a Mennonite school in the Mount Joy area to continue, LMS agreed to another year in partnership, culminating with fully independent status for Kraybill for the 2019-20 academic year. “Lancaster Mennonite is pleased to see the Kraybill

five shows planned this year may park at the rear of the building and on the streets around it. Due to the age of the building, the facility is not handicapped-accessible. Folks with special needs are invited to contact the box office at 717-426-1277 or tmoore @susquehannastageco.com, and the theater staff will make every effort to provide accommodations. “Plaza Suite” will open on Friday,
Feb. 15, at 7:30 p.m. Additional evening performances will be offered at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 21; Friday, Feb. 22; and Saturdays, Feb. 16 and 23. Matinees will begin at 2 p.m. on Sundays, Feb. 17 and 24. The theme of the production is couples and relationships, Johnson said. The three stories are connected only through the theme and the setting. There is a married couple whose anniversary celebration is interrupted by work and an attractive secretary; a Hollywood producer attempting to seduce his high school sweetheart, who makes the rendezvous while her three children are in school; and two parents reasoning with their daughter, who has locked herself in the restroom to avoid her groom and their wedding. “Every other response is a laugh line,” commented Joel Persing of Brogue, who plays the father of the bride. “It’s a very funny show. I’m partial to the third act,” he said with a laugh.
“There are some tragic roles. The challenge is in making it funny,” noted Kyle Dunbar of Mount Joy. He is the only actor who will appear in all three scenes, with varying roles as bellhop, waiter, and groom. Dunbar is embracing that challenge, along with those associated with making a stage debut. His only previous interaction with theater was in taking a Fundamentals of Acting class as a freshman at Donegal High School. “I have learned something new every time (we rehearse),” Dunbar remarked. “I’m thankful for having an awesome director and cast.” The positive reputation of Susquehanna Stage is renowned throughout the area, attracting audiences and actors from quite a distance. “ We have hobbies that demand you go where you can get a part,” added Persing, whose commute from York County is more than a half-hour. Reading native Mikaela Krall, who plays the high school sweetheart, travels from Annville,
where she is a student at Lebanon Valley College. Veteran actor Ron Nason makes the drive from Mechanicsburg to portray a workaholic husband. Like Persing and Krall, Nason is appearing with Susquehanna Stage for the first time. “I have seen productions here, and I recently retired, so I have more flexibility,” Nason said. “You go where the roles are.” “The community theater circuit in central Pennsylvania is tight,” said Niki Boyer Swatski of Marietta, who is the other half of the anniversary couple. “We borrow actors, as well as sets and costumes.” Other cast members who will appear in “Plaza Suite” are Chrissy Nickel, Wes Madara, and Georgie Reardon. Readers who would like to watch these folks in action may purchase tickets at http://susquehannastageco.com/ index.php/box-office or at the door before each performance. Separate prices have been set for adults and students in orchestra and balcony seating.

The group performs throughout the tristate region and has appeared at regional flute fairs, society events, and conventions. The Pennsylvania Flute Choir has a wide variety of repertoire, including classical, jazz, sacred, and contemporary selections. Although
Alfieri could not say what the Feb. 24 concert will include, past performances have featured Mozart’s Divertimento in D Major (K. 136), “By Kells Waters,” “Dizzy Fingers,” “Salvation Is Created,” and “St Paul’s Suite.” All ZION Musik concerts will be open to the public free of charge. The program is supported by sponsorships and freewill offerings. “It is my hope that those in attendance will be blessed,

some best times,” she said. “I would say ninety percent of the finishes we had were best times. “To come into leagues and do what they did was incredible,” continued the coach. “This was an incredibly fast meet all around. Our swimmers did a great job of competing with the best swimmers in the league.” In the 100 butterfly Maggie Shaffer had a time of 59.89, finishing fifth. Shaffer earned fourth place in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:59.25. “She went from a 2:01 to a 1:59 in the 200 freestyle,” said Bertolli. “To see her break one minute in the butterfly with all the hard work she has put in was great.” Tied for fourth in Saturday’s 100 free were Yoder and fellow junior Katelyn Wiglesworth. They both
touched the wall at 55.33 seconds. “They’re both very good friends and also very competitive,” said Bertolli. “They both were very excited to compete with their friend and finish in a tie.” Also on Saturday, sophomore Sophia Vitko joined Shaffer, Wiglesworth and anchor Yoder for a time of 3:48.41, giving the Knights fourth in the 400 free relay. The previous day the foursome of Wigleswroth, Vitko, Shaffer and Yoder had finished sixth in the 200 medley relay. In all, the Hempfield girls compiled 38 team points. Warwick edged Manheim Township 85.5 to 80.5 to win the girls’ team championship. The Hempfield boys racked up 48 points and missed third place by only four points. Township repeated as the
boys’ championship team with 150 with Cedar Crest (65) and Penn Manor (52) behind them. Andre Fissella had two secondplace finishes for Hempfield. He was runner up in the 200 individual medley on Friday, posting a time of 1:58.53. On Saturday, he took second in the 100 breaststroke (58.41) - an event in which Cedar Crest’s Logan Smith set a league meet record at 58.20 seconds, “He has been working so hard,” Bertolli said of Fissella. “To see him swim those times was awesome. They were both very good times which will hopefully get him into districts.” Xander Hughes, Nate Stuckey, Johnathan Sescilla. Shawn Splain, Charles Saylor, and Josh Sahd earned the points for the Knights as well. In the 400 free relay on Saturday,
With a balanced scoring and timely defense, Hempfield held off McCaskey in a key Section One battle on Tuesday night at Landisville. With the 60-46 victory, the Black Knights prevented McCaskey from claiming a share of the Section One boys’ basketball title. Eli Washington and Ryan Hilton each scored 12 points for Hempfield. Brad Atkinson came through with 11 points, including a pair of three-point field goals. Austin Groft scored nine. The outside shooting was another asset for the Knights, who improved to 7-6 in the Lancaster-Lebanon League, (13-9 overall). They had five three-point field goals. In addition to the two by Atkinson, Hilton, Groft, and Ronnie Swantner (5 pts) each converted one three-pointer. The Red Tornado fell to 17-5 (8-5 league). Meanwhile, Manheim Township won the section crown with a 9-4 mark, beating Cedar Photo by Jeremy Madea Crest in that season finale. Next up for the Knights is an opening-round game in the district playoffs on Tuesday, February 19. Hempfield will visit fifth-ranked Harrisburg. SWIMMING The Hempfield boys’ swim team finished fourth in the LancasterLebanon League championships while the girls finished seventh in the two-day event at Roy G. Snyder Natatorium in Wilson West-Lawn. Among the top performers for the girls’ team was junior Katie Yoder. In Friday’s 50-yard freestyle, she finished third in 24.88 seconds - less than half a second off first place. “Katie Yoder finished third in what was her best time this year,” head coach Brittany Bertolli pointed out. The Hempfield coach noted that both squads featured swimmers setting season-best times in the Photo by Jeremy Madea championships. MERCHANDISER - Hempfield Edition Saylor Sesceilla, Splain and Stuckey swam at a 3:28.72 clip, finishing sixth. Stuckey also took sixth (4:59.22) in the 500 freestyle. “Nate dropped 16 seconds - from 5:15 to 4:59 - in the 500 free,” Bertolli noted. “He was in the second to last heat, but he broke into the top eight to medal and get us points.” In the 200 medley relay on Friday, Hughes, Fissella, Splain and Stuckey claimed fourth place (1:43.57) while the foursome of Sescilla, Saylor, Sahd and Fassella was third (1:32.71) in the 200 free relay. Stuckey had another sixth-place finish on Friday, swimming the 200 free in 1:50.66. “The 200 free relay did an awesome
job,” Bertolli remarked. “In their splits, each of them improved.” GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The Hempfield girls’ team pulled off a pair of big victories to close out the regular season. Following a 4331 non-league win at Chambersburg on February 2, the Black Knights were able to spring ahead to the regular season finale, which was a Section One clash at McCaskey. Hempfield came away with a 43-37 victory, finishing at 6-7 in the L-L League and 7-15 overall. Despite the wins, the Knights found themselves short of qualifying for district playoffs, finishing at No. 16 in the District Three 6A power rankings. “It was nice to get that win to end

the season on a winning note,” head coach Kendra Beittel stated. “All three of our seniors had good contributions in that win. So as seniors, they had an opportunity to end on a high note. “We talked about how the three of them - Melissa Grube, Lauren Dague and Madeline Sohonyay - are just good role models,” said Beittel. “It wasn’t an easy road for them, coming up through the program. They worked hard and persevered to fill the roles they needed to.” In that season-ending win at McCaskey, the Knights got out to a 20-4 lead and carried a 12-point lead into the second half. They held on despite a fourth-quarter comeback by the Red Tornado (0-13, 0-22). Molly McGarry and Lindsey Durkota each scored 11 points to lead Hempfield. “Lindsey and Molly have been our leading scorers,” said Beittel. “Lindsey’s athletic presence - offensively and defensively - and her competitiveness helped us. She owned the rebounds. “Molly is a smaller guard,” continued the coach. “We talked about her distributing the ball. But she’s one of our best shooters. She has been looking for her shots more toward the end of the season.” Lauren Dague scored seven points while Sohonyay’s six points came on two three-pointers.
February 13, 2019 - 9
In the game at Chambersburg, Durkota and McGarry scored 13 and 12, respectively. McGarry hit one of four three-point baskets by the Knights. Sophie Herman scored six points, which included a 4-for-4 night at the foul line. Dague, Sohonyay and Abby Burdyn each finished with three points via a three-pointer. Hempfield came back from a twopoint halftime deficit with a strong 13-2 run in the third quarter. “Lauren Dague is a good defensive player,” said Beittel. “Abby Burdyn is another. They’re both returning. Sophomore Jessica Weinholdt is another kid who’s aggressive. She plays well defensively and we worked on her confidence on offense.” BOWLING Hempfield edged Penn Manor 4-3 on Tuesday in Section One bowling at Leisure Lanes. The Knights improved to 39-45 as they wrapped up the season. The Comets’ record went to 55-29 after their loss. Ben Helman led all bowlers with a 730 series, which included a 267 in his second game of the day. Earlier, he rolled a 249. Nick O’Neill bowled an aggregate score of 607. He had a 208 and 209 in his first two games. Gavin Davidson (678) led the Comets.
