Schreiber Announces Minority-Directed Scholarship

A Newspaper Lady’s Farewell BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER

Schreiber Pediatric speech-language therapist Barb Miller worked with Markus Marks during a therapy session.

fostering an organization that better reflects the diverse populations it serves. These include connecting with national associations representing professionals of color to expand its hiring pool,

Schreiber has always tried to provide services to some of the most vulnerable children in our community,” DeBord said. “Our mantra is we will serve every family who needs us, and we want every child we see to reach their fullest potential. But in the past and even still today - we have not achieved the diversity in our field that would best benefit our clients. By endowing this graduate scholarship at Penn State, we are taking a long-overdue step to advance equitable access to training in outpatient pediatric therapy services, with the long-term goal of creating a pool of speechlanguage pathology experts that reflect the communities they serve.” Penn State was selected as the educational partner because a large proportion of Schreiber’s practitioners holds degrees from Penn State’s program. “The college’s speech-language pathology program continues to

pioneer interventions that are having a transformative effect on augmenting communication,” said Craig J. Newschaffer, Raymond E. and Erin Stuart Schultz Dean of Penn State’s College of Health and Human Development. “The Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development Educational Equity Graduate Scholarship represents a major expansion in our capacity to secure talented applicants from across the full spectrum of candidates. We are deeply grateful to Schreiber for its generosity and leadership in making all these advances possible.” Schreiber has pledged $275,000 for the scholarship, which will be raised in addition to the funds needed for the center’s daily operations. The gift will be matched by Penn State’s Educational Equity Matching Program for a total endowment of $550,000. Readers who would like to contribute to the scholarship may visit www.schreiberpediatric.org.

n Jan. 15, the anniversary of the late Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, one local organization announced its most recent effort to promote diversity and inclusion, ideals to which King dedicated much of his life. The Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, 625 Community Way, Lancaster, has established a scholarship that will benefit graduate students from underrepresented backgrounds. Master’s-level students who have excelled in the field of speech-language pathology at Penn State University will be supported by the scholarship, and recipients will be offered externships at Schreiber, an option that the organization expects to help it recruit and hire more minority candidates for therapy positions. I interviewed for a part-time job as a proofreader a few hours before my wedding rehearsal on Dec. 28, 2006. When I received the offer to join Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. as a full-time feature writer and photographer, I was buying last-minute decorating supplies in a discount store. I was so excited to have my first salaried professional job that I forgot to introduce the members of the bridal party to each other. One of my sisters later asked me who the person was who escorted her down the aisle. That excitement continued on my first day, Jan. 8, 2007, as my predecessor, Ethan Riley, showed me the ropes … and then turned to anxiety when I was solely in charge of finding articles in a news cycle that never stopped. Eventually, however, I settled into the role of “Newspaper Lady,” one that I have been privileged to hold for 14 years. My clients have made all the difference. You invited me into your homes and into your hearts.

The past year has been a trying one for the Columbia Food Bank, but the organization has never wavered in its support of the community, said Danielle Peters, director. “This is a year when everybody is in need,” she remarked. “We’re seeing people who have never been to a food bank in their life. We want people to know, if you come to our door, no matter where you’re from, you’re going to walk out with groceries.” The Columbia Food Bank operates out of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 340 Locust St. It is open 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. “Clients can come to us once a month,” Peters said, noting that an ID is all that is needed to receive food. “We prepack the groceries for them, and we give people everything they would receive at the grocery store breakfast foods, lunch foods, dinner foods, snacks. We’re fortunate to be able to supply meat, cheese, butter and eggs as well.” The food bank serves mostly the Columbia, Mountville, West Hempfield, Manor Township and Washington Boro areas, although Peters said clients

have come from all over central Pennsylvania. She noted that in 2019, the food bank gave away approximately 66,000 pounds of food, while in 2020, that number grew to 70,000 pounds. The organization is a nonprofit and receives its support through food and monetary donations from the community. This past year, food donations were down due to closings of offices and other businesses that might normally hold food drives, Peters noted. “We’re community supported, and because people are so generous, our money donations went up this past year,” she said. “The issue became trying to find places to buy food, because many of the stores and agencies we purchase from were going through their own shortages. Even with all that going on, though, God is good. Nobody ever went away without food.” The organization uses monetary donations to purchase food, including perishable items since those are typically not donated and because the food bank has little storage space to keep things long-term. “We are constantly replenishing our supply,” she explained, adding that in 2019, the organization purchased 20,357 pounds of food. “In 2020, we had to buy 27,234 pounds of

The church that houses the food bank has faced some building issues, and it’s likely the organization will need to find a new home in the future, Peters noted. But thanks to community support and a team of volunteers, the food bank continues

Farewell from pg 1 I have so many fond memories: -Robah Hess teaching me to be careful with my instructions during photoshoots by popping out his dentures when I asked him to show me his teeth when he smiled. -Competing in the invitational milking contest at the Solanco Fair. -Being teased by Bethesda United Methodist Church members the first time I experimented with purple hair. -Standing in a pasture at Noble Hill Horse Rescue as horses grazed around us - and then one tried to eat my notepad. -Judging a cooking class contest at Penn Manor High School. And there are the not-sofond memories: -The death of Lancaster County Master Gardener Tom Beck in 2015. This hit me hard because we had worked on numerous stories together. My last day as the Newspaper Lady was Feb. 5. I have moved on, but I have not moved away. Once it is safe to linger in person again, I will be eager to hear your updates, but not for publication. Hempfield Hold Off McCaskey, 62-59

BY ARA GRIGORIAN

Hempfield moved into the top of the Section One standings with Tuesday’s triumph at home. In an exciting finish, the Black Knights downed McCaskey 62-59, improving to 5-2 in the LancasterLebanon League (6-2 overall) while the Red Tornado fell to 4-2 (4-6). It was Hempfield’s third victory in its last four games against league rivals. The scoring pace picked up intensely in the fourth quarter with McCaskey outscoring the Knights 21-20. Hempfield’s 34-26 halftime advantage began to dwindle away with the Red Tornado outscoring the home team in the third period as well. Hempfield’s Ryan Hilton and McCaskey’s Jonathan Byrd were the top scorers in the game with 20 and 19 points, respectively. Hilton made a pair of three-point baskets as did Miguel Pena, who scored nine points in the game. Davion Edmond-Greene poured in 11 points for the Knights. The Knights were coming off an easier victory from Saturday, February 6, when they stopped Penn Manor 62-43 at home. A dominant opening period in which the Knights outscored the Comets 19-5, set the tone. The Comets did match the Knights point-for-point in the second stanza. However, Hempfield maintained the lead the rest of the way. Hilton and Pena tied for the game’s top scoring total of 18 points. Each of them made three treys. Brandon Hagel added eight points.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The girls’ team soared into first place with a 48-30 win at McCaskey on Tuesday, February 9. The win was Hempfield’s fourth in a row and third straight against a Section One rival. In the third quarter, the Knights began to pull away from what had been a two-point halftime advantage. They outscored the Red Tornado 24-8 in the second half. Jess Weinoldt’s 12-point game led the way in scoring. Lauren Moffatt made a pair of threepointers and racked up 10 points. Autumn Cook and Orianna Edmond each poured in nine. The previous day, the Knights visited Penn Manor for a Section One clash. The Knights’ 21-3 dominating first quarter gave very little hope for the Comets to return. Hempfield went on to win 54-30. In the balanced attack, Cook led all scorers with five points, hitting twice from three-point range. Weinoldt and Moffatt each chipped in with nine points while Edmond finished with eight. WRESTLING What are the contributing factors to the success of the Hempfield wrestling team? Experience? Hard work? Exceptional athletes? “I think anytime you have success, it’s a combination of those things,” said head coach Shane Mack, whose team improved to 60 in L-L League competition with Monday’s defeat of Penn Manor. “Kids are working hard, and we have a lot of good wrestlers. “It didn’t just happen by accident,” he added. “We built a solid

foundation from the youth program years ago. We definitely have a lot of depth, making sure we get kids in every weight class.” In the 59-7 defeat of Manor, the Black Knights registered six pins, a technical fall and two more wins on decisions. Those two decisions came at the 106- and the 138-pound matches with Jorden Williams and Clay Gainer, respectively. Williams won by an 8-6 margin while Gainer eked out a 6-5 win against Tanner Stefanick. Gio Luciano dominated at 113 with a 17-2 technical fall. “He’s a great athlete and very competitive,” Mack said of his senior wrestler. “He’s very physical.” Braden Edwards (126) and Kamron Fickes (138) each came away with pins. Both occurred in the final 10 seconds of the opening periods and were sandwiched around Gainer’s decision. “Kamron Fickes is having a good a season,” Mack remarked. “He’s a young kid and has wrestled a lot of good competition. “Edwards is tough as nails,” continued the coach. “He has wrestled a lot for us.” A Penn Manor forfeit followed by Dylan Bard’s pin at 152 increased Hempfield’s lead to 410. Jobeth Plaza pinned his opponent at the 172 bout. Gordy Hoover (215) and Caleb Mussmon (285) also registered pins. “Caleb Mussmon is only a sophomore,” Mack noted. “He’s a big kid with a lot of room for growth. That’s a tough weight class when you’re in 10th grade. But he keeps working hard in practice and

continues to get better.” Expanding on the success at Spring Ford and how these nonleague matches help, Mack remarked, “We try to make sure our kids are prepared for districts and states. We have a good balance of competition. We’re seeing a lot more duals.” SWIMMING Swimmers from the L-L League schools converged on the Roy G. Snyder Natatorium at Wilson High School for the two-day league championship meet, Thursday and Friday, February 4-5. The Hempfield girls finished third in the team standings with 64 team points. Manheim Township won both the girls’ team crown (110 points) and the boys (123 points). The Hempfield boys finished eighth. “I’m really proud of my girls this year. They rose to the occasion,” said Hempfield coach Casey Lear. “We had some great swims and dropped over a minute and a half collectively as a team.” One key to the squad’s success was how well the relay teams performed. In the 200-yard medley relay, the quartet of Caroline Schweigert, Ella Root, Maggie Shaffer and Emily Taylor combined for a second-place time of 1:50.38. The 400 freestyle relay team of Shaffer, Rory Cantwell, Cassandra Christoffel and Anna Koger took fourth place in 3:44.04. Koger also anchored the 200 free relay that included Taylor, Cantwell and Micaeh Wiglesworth. “We have a deep squad of girls so we can mix and match where we need to in the relays,” said Lear.

Shaffer and Taylor took fourth and eighth, respectively, in the 200-individual medley with times of 2:12.89 and 2:15.88. Shaffer finished fifth (54.42) in the 100 butterfly. “Maggie Shaffer is a ‘lead by example’ kind of girl,” Lear commented. “She shows the other girls what it means to compete on a higher level. She’s also good about going anywhere we want her to.” Root had a phenomenal time of 1:05.72 in the 100 breaststroke an event won by Donegal’s Jordynn Park at 1:05.00. This February, the American Heart Association (AHA), a nonprofit organization focused on heart and brain health for all, is teaming up with companies around the country to fight cardiovascular disease through Life Is Why, a cause marketing campaign benefiting the AHA. Life Is W hy invites consumers to celebrate their reasons to live healthier, longer lives - by giving. Weis Markets also participated in the campaign in 2020. Through Life Is W hy, Weis Markets and its customers have a quick and easy way to give to the AHA and support its mission. Weis joins several national companies, including Advance Auto, Kroger, Orangetheory Fitness, Pilot/Flying J, Stage Stores, Stater Bros. Markets and Stein Mart in supporting the campaign.

Donations through Life Is Why’s participating retailers - no matter the amount allow the AHA to fund research aimed to improve the health outcomes of heart and stroke patients, train more than 2.5 million high school students in CPR annually and support the work of local entrepreneurs and organizations working to improve health outcomes in under-resourced communities. Those interested in supporting the AHA can look for the Life Is Why logo on Weis Markets mailers and posters and at the register this month. GOAL Project Plans Workshop The GOAL Project, located at 313 Liberty St., Lancaster, will offer the first session in a three-part bilingual series on creating a sustainable addiction prevention and recovery support ministry. The workshop will be held on Saturday, Feb. 27, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Eglesia Rohrerstown Mennonite Church, 601 Rohrerstown Road, Lancaster. For each participating church, a clergy person and two to three laity and staff should attend. This workshop will be delivered by Celso Mesias, prevention specialist, and Steven Schedler, LCSW,

CAADC, CCS. The event will adhere to social distancing guidelines, and masks and hand sanitizer will be provided. During the workshop, clergy, program/ministry leaders and key stakeholders from various faith backgrounds will gather to explore their organizations’ beliefs, ideas, and attitudes toward addiction and substance use. This workshop will explore the role of the faith community in awareness, education, and recovery support and provide tips for initiating a team program/ministry. The

workshop counts for six PCB credit hours. GOAL Project’s mission is to prepare and support the community in addressing the challenges of addiction and recovery. Through the F.A.I.T.H. Initiatives Program, GOAL helps local faith communities to build sustainable teams to prevent substance misuse/abuse and to offer support to help sustain recovery. The workshop series is delivered by local presenters in collaboration with Faith Partners, a nationally recognized nonprofit organization that has

trained hundreds of congregational teams from 22 different faith traditions in 29 states. In Lancaster and York counties, 11 churches are in various stages of ministry development. The F.A.I.T.H. Initiatives Program is supported by the Lancaster County Drug and Alcohol Commission and Compass Mark. Members of all faiths groups are welcome. Registration is available at www.goalproject.org. For more information, readers may contact Paige Harker Naylor at 717-824-3310 or paigeharker@goalproject.org.

United Way of Lancaster County (UWLC) will launch Share OUR Stimulus, a fund for stimulus check donations to be distributed to individuals who have experienced setbacks due to COVID-19. Inspired by the national campaign Share the Stimulus, UWLC will facilitate donations to be given as a one-time gift to people who apply for assistance through www.uwlanc.org/stimulus. Readers may visit the aforementioned website to donate all or part of their stimulus check. Those who make more than the stimulus threshold are also encouraged to give, as are organizations such as UWLC’s Catalyst Sponsors, including Lancaster County Community

Foundation and Central Pennsylvania Food Bank which have each donated $10,000; M&T Bank which has contributed $7,500; and High Foundation which donated $5,000. In addition, Oaktree Outdoor Advertising is pledging to assist in promoting the fund through free billboard support. Whether someone received a stimulus check or not, he or she can support neighbors who are struggling to cover expenses not eligible for targeted support. For example, a young mother can receive WIC to help purchase baby formula, but diapers are disqualified. For more information, readers may visit the aforementioned website.
