Troop 349 Plans Spaghetti Dinner By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Will Russell, quartermaster of Boy Scout Troop 349 of Mountville, has intimate knowledge of all of the troop’s gear. For the past few years, it has been Will’s responsibility to inventory and inspect the tents, cooking pots, and other camping accoutrements owned by the troop. “The water jugs are breaking down, and the coolers are cracked from where we dropped them,” Will reported. The troop has slated those items for replacement, and proceeds from the group’s annual spaghetti dinner will make the purchases possible. Two years ago, spaghetti dinner proceeds enabled Troop 349 to buy a trailer in which the troop hauls gear to campsites. Troop membership is increasing, so tents will be on the shopping list too. The items are not inexpensive. “It’s quality gear because they camp in
extreme conditions,” said troop committee chair Vanessa Reisig. “They camp (when the temperature is) in the teens.” The spaghetti dinner will be held on Saturday, March 2, from 4 to 7 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church (UMC), 100 W. Main St., Mountville. A snow date has been set for Saturday, March 23. The all-you-can-eat meal will include spaghetti and meatballs, tossed salad, garlic bread, and desserts. Glutenfree pasta will be available. Separate prices for admission have been set for adults and for children ages 3 to 10. Children under age 3 may eat free of charge. Troop members are preselling tickets, or admission may be paid at the door. Folks may also purchase meals to go; containers will be provided. “It’s also a community outreach,” Reisig remarked. “We have families that come in and eat in large groups. It’s an inexpensive night out for families.” See Troop 349 pg 8

Worship services are held in the former Manor Music Mansion, which is now owned by Millersville Brethren in Christ (BIC) Church, 3116 Blue Rock Road, Millersville, on Saturdays at 6 p.m. The group strives to impact the community without any hidden agenda. “We’re trying to get our folks in the mode of serving, without a return,” explained lead pastor Rip Wahlberg. “We want to be a blessing to the community, but not make it about us. Rather, the cornhole tournaments hosted by Sanctuary have been held strictly as fundraising efforts for area fire companies. The next tournament will be held on Friday, March 1, and will benefit West Willow Fire Company. There will be a small cost to play, and a variety of foods and beverages will be available for purchase. Spectators may watch at no cost. The event will be held in the Millersville BIC building. Registration will open at 6:30 p.m., and the first games will start at 7 p.m. The tournaments were suggested and coordinated by church leader Dave Stoltzfus, along with his wife, Darice, a few years ago. Dave is a cornhole fanatic and has made friends at area events. “Cornhole (is a) subculture,” Wahlberg remarked. “It’s a big deal.”

While cornhole can be cutthroat, the Sanctuary events are more casual. Through a blind draw, contestants are randomly assigned to two-person teams, regardless of age or gender, to level the playing field. The last Sanctuary cornhole event featured 30 teams, for a total of 60 contestants. The tournaments are double-elimination, with a computer-tracked bracket to ensure accuracy. Teams are guaranteed to play at least two games. Cash prizes are awarded to the top two teams, and gift cards are sometimes also part of the prize packages. “The point is not to win this thing,” Wahlberg said. “We are trying to be a part of the community and help other places serve their communities. We want to be here for others’ sakes, not for ours.” In addition to the cornhole games, silent auctions featuring cornhole boards handmade by Dave are held during the fundraising events, with the proceeds going to the evening’s designated fire company. “Dave makes boards like nobody’s business,” Wahlberg commented. “The quality and designs are unsurpassed.” Past cornhole events hosted by Sanctuary have netted $1,200 and $1,400 for the fire companies. “At the end of the night, when we gave them the cash,
they were shocked and grateful,” Wahlberg said. “One fire company said what we raised would cover a monthly payment on a fire engine.” Sanctuary was founded in 2003 as Lancaster Vineyard Church. It changed its name to Sanctuary in August 2017. Wahlberg has served as lead pastor since 2009. “Our desire is to be a discipleship community, not a social club,” Wahlberg said. “We want to be a place of safety, peace, and healing, but most importantly, the place of God. We want to engage the presence of the Holy Spirit in our midst. We want to connect with God through an emotional and experiential meeting with the result of restoration.” Wahlberg described his preaching style as topical, but based on the authority of Scripture. “My sermons will always have an anchor passage,” he said. Everyone is welcome to attend worship services at Sanctuary. Children’s programming will be available during the service for youngsters through sixth grade. An area has been reserved for nursing parents. typically have above-average intelligence, but they can struggle in a traditional academic setting. Those who do not receive help can suffer devastating personal consequences; Hinkel noted that dyslexia tops the list of reasons teenagers drop out of school. Dyslexia is treatable with remediation. Since 2002, the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster has tutored more than 175 students with a dyslexic profile. The center serves children on a firstcome, first-served basis regardless of race, ethnicity, economic status, or religious affiliation. While there is no fee to the students served, it costs the center approximately $5,000 to tutor one child for one year. The center also certifies adults as tutors in Orton-Gillingham and each year offers four scholarships toward the cost of training. Dyslexia is a neurologically based condition that affects language acquisition, processing, and decoding. Recent research suggests dyslexia affects up to 20 percent of the population, reported Children’s Dyslexia Center director Heather Hinkel. People with dyslexia

The Arts at Millersville will present the one-woman play “The Other Mozart” on Thursday, Feb. 28, at 7:30 p.m. The performance, which will also have open captioning, will take place in Steinman Hall at the Ware Center - Millersville University, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. A free 20-minute Audience Perspective talk by Dr. Madeleine Darmiento, assistant professor of strings (co-coordinator) and general studies in the Millersville University Tell School of Music, will begin 45 minutes before the performance to provide insight and perspective related to the performance. Seating is limited and not guaranteed. Little Matchstick Factory’s “The Other Mozart” is the true story of Amadeus’ sister, Nannerl Mozart - a prodigy, keyboard virtuoso, and composer who performed throughout Europe with her brother to equal acclaim, but her work and story faded away. Created by Sylvia Milo and directed by Isaac Byrne, “The Other Mozart” is based on facts, stories, and lines pulled directly from the Mozart family’s humorous and heartbreaking letters. The play is set in a 18-foot dress designed by Magdalena Dabrowska of the National Theater of Poland. Along with music composed by Nannerl’s famous brother and Marianna Martines, a female composer who inspired Nannerl, the production includes original music was written for
the play by Nathan Davis and Phyllis Chen for the instruments Nannerl knew intimately, such as clavichords, music boxes, and bells, as well as teacups, fans, and other ordinary objects. Period-style movement directed by Janice Orlandi features balletic gestures, court bows, and fan language. With the beauty of the dress and hair design, the smell of perfume, and the clouds of dusting powder rising from the stage, the performance creates an experience that engages multiple senses. This performance is part of the Performing Arts Series, and more information about the series is available at www.ArtsMU.com. General admission tickets are available for a set fee, with students receiving a discount. Tickets may be purchased by calling the box office at 717-871-7600 or visiting www.ArtsMU.com. Inperson ticket purchases may be made at the box office of the Ware Center on Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or in Room 103 of the Student Memorial Center on the Millersville University campus on Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Pictured on front:

Nearly 300 Lancaster County business and community leaders came together at the 34th annual Lancaster Heart Ball on Feb. 2 at the Lancaster Country Club. The event raised more than $247,000 for the American Heart Association, a voluntary health organization focused on heart and brain health. The gala, themed “Fire and Ice,” opened with the Keep the Beat dance hour featuring The Uptown Band playing a full hour of songs with 100 beats per minute, which is the correct tempo for performing HandsOnly CPR. The dance hour was followed by a custom “Fire and Ice” performance from American Music Theatre dancers. Lancaster Chamber president Tom Baldridge hosted the evening’s festivities, which also included silent and live auctions, a hearthealthy dinner, musical entertainment and dancing. Dave Murray and Diane Murry served as the event’s co-chairs. Organizers dedicated this year’s Heart Ball and Open Your Heart appeal to longtime Heart
Ball committee member and American Heart Association volunteer Kim McNabb, who passed away in December of a heartrelated illness. McNabb had been a volunteer for the Heart Ball since its inception 34 years ago. In his honor, American Heart Association, Lancaster Division board president Shawn Hart presented the Kim McNabb and Glenn L. Myers Friend of Heart Award to two other longtime volunteers and American Heart Association supporters, Brian and Sandy Brightbill. Funds raised from the Lancaster Heart Ball will support the American Heart Association’s mission to be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives through community education, public policy advocacy, health care quality improvement and investment in lifesaving research. Sometimes genealogist Darvin Martin finds himself in the role of scientist. More specifically, Martin has found himself becoming well-versed in genetic science. He has developed an understanding of DNA and how it is passed from generation to generation. With the advent of basic genetic testing available through companies like Ancestry.com and 23andMe.com, a whole new aspect of genealogy has opened up. “There are huge benefits of DNA testing, but they lie in the deeper testing - not the basic ethnicity testing - which can reveal relatives,” Martin said. “You can share family trees and see how you connect.” There are some myths about genetic testing, however, and Martin hopes to dispel them during his presentation “The New
DNA Reality: Forging the Path Between Discovery and Privacy,” which he will give on Friday, March 29, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (LMHS), 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, as part of the 40th Lancaster Family History Conference. “Everyone assumes their DNA is private, but that’s not the case,” remarked Martin, conference committee chair. He explained that while a particular combination of DNA might be unique to a specific person, the components of those genes may be accessed through other avenues, as they come from their parents, who got their DNA from their respective parents, and so forth. “The way that we think about DNA is an illusion because nature does not work that way,” Martin said. During his presentation, Martin will discuss two recent

cases in which DNA from genealogical sites helped law enforcement officers trace and confirm the identity of perpetrators of crimes committed long ago. Additionally, Martin will address the concept of ethnicity and the uncertainty of genetic testing for ethnicity. “It’s a false assumption that you can quantify ethnicity. Ethnicity is not just genetics; it’s also history and culture,” Martin asserted. Martin explained that because of the way genes are randomly distributed, a pair of biological siblings might test as having genetic markers similar to people in completely different parts of the world. One way in which testing is helpful, however, is in men from Western European backgrounds. By tracing Y chromosomes, it is possible to see how surnames have changed over time. Martin related a story about two family groups in different states that discovered they share a Y chromosome and thus a common ancestor. It turned out that the last name of Carpenter was the English translation of the original German surname of Zimmerman. Martin’s presentation may be attended in person, or folks may watch it online live or at a later date. There will be an array of other presentations, seminars, discussions, and field trips offered before and during the Lancaster Family History Conference. The conference will examine how legal records are a helpful resource for understanding the details of one’s ancestors’ lives. Pennsylvania has a collection of legal records starting as early as 300 years ago. Genealogist Judy

Troop 349 from pg 1 Older troop members will work with adult volunteers to prepare the meal, and the younger Scouts will greet guests, serve the food, and clear the tables. Teamwork is something stressed within the boyrun troop. The Scouts of Troop 349 often go on adventures together, whether spending a weekend camping in the woods, whitewater rafting, or volunteering around Mountville. Urban orienteering, where groups of three boys, accompanied by an adult, follow clues planted throughout New York City or Washington, D.C., is a highlight of the summer. The troop also visits the Naval Academy in Annapolis, where the boys camp out and watch a
football game. Scouts have helped to clean the area around Lake Grubb, appeared in Memorial Day parades, and volunteered at the Mountville Fire Company and Oak Leaf Manor North. “(The troop) is helping shape young boys and men,” Will commented. “You can use the skills you learn here for your future.” Membership in Troop 349 is open to boys in grade five up through age 18. Meetings are held at St. Paul’s UMC on Mondays at 6:30 p.m. Visitors are welcome. Tiramisu is an Italian layered dessert, and the name translates to “pick me up or “cheer me up. Requiring no baking at all, it can be an easy treat to prepare. This recipe for tiramisu is courtesy of the American Dairy Association. Tiramisu (Yield: 9 servings) 6 egg yolks 1 cup sugar 1 1/4 cup mascarpone cheese 1 3/4 cup heavy whipping cream 2 (12-ounce) packages savoiardi lady fingers 1/2 cup cold espresso or strong coffee 1/4 cup coffee-flavored liqueur (optional) 1 tablespoon cocoa for dusting Instructions 1 - Combine egg yolks and sugar in the top of a double boiler, over boiling water. Reduce heat to low and cook for about 10 minutes, stirring constantly. This is the sabayon. Remove from the heat and whip yolks until thick and lemon colored. Add mascarpone to whipped yolks and beat until combined. 2 - In a separate bowl, whip cream to stiff peaks. Gently fold the whipped cream in the mascarpone-sabayon mixture and set aside. 3 - Mix the cold espresso with the coffee liqueur, and dip the lady fingers into the mixture just long enough to get them wet. Do not soak them. Arrange the lady fingers in the bottom of an 8-inch square baking dish (or 6 by 9 inches). Spoon half the mascarpone cream filling over the lady fingers. 4 - Repeat the process with another layer. Refrigerate 4 hours or overnight. Dust with cocoa before serving.

aiming to help find a cure for cancer. The “Hope” Riders come from as far as Ohio and Florida and as close as Philadelphia, Hershey, and local neighborhoods. They aim to provide hope and support to those battling cancer and those who need that extra kindness to get them through each day. The “Hope” Riders are the 2019 American Cancer Society’s (ACS) PA Hope Ride bicyclists, who, on Saturday, June 22, and Sunday, June 23, will pedal anywhere from 30 miles to more than 170 miles through central Pennsylvania, starting from the Hope Lodge in Hershey. Until then, “Hope” Riders will raise funds to support the Hope Lodges of Pennsylvania and other program services. PA Hope Ride cyclists may ride as individuals or as teams. Riders may participate in one or two days of the tour. Participating cyclists pay a registration fee and are provided with tips to reach individual fundraising goals. The Hershey Hope Lodge will be the start and finish of this year’s ride. The “Hope” Riders may pass through five of Pennsylvania’s counties and many rural small towns. On June 22, routes will include 30, 62, 70, and 100 miles. The route on June 23 will be 70 miles. All routes on either day will end at the Hershey Hope. On the route, cyclists of all skill
byways, country roads, and trails. While experienced riders enjoy challenging options on portions of the route, intermediate and novice riders will have designated courses to fit their level of riding. Those who choose a one-day ride will finish at the Hope Lodge to a special finish line celebration. Those who are riding two days will finish their first day ride at Kutztown University campus, where they will share their adventures of the day at a sitdown dinner. Cyclists will be provided with all meals, rest stops, night-time accommodations, and full support from mechanics and safety personnel during their one- or two-day excursion. To support the cyclists, readers may visit www.pahoperide.org and click on Donate or call the American Cancer Society at 717534-1487. Readers may also become a PA “Hope” Rider and make a resolution to get fit by training and riding for those who are fighting to beat cancer. The American Cancer Society is a nationwide communitybased voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service. Gov. Tom Wolf and Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding helped unveil the Pennsylvania Farm Show butter sculpture, carved from a half-ton of butter and depicting the Choose PA Dairy “Find Your Power” campaign. The sculpture, a longtime Farm Show staple, aimed to encourage Pennsylvanians to support the state’s dairy industry. The sculpture, sponsored by American Dairy Association North East (ADANE), featured several individuals donning superhero capes, including an athlete, a soldier, a doctor, a firefighter, and a dairy farmer. The sculptors began work in midDecember to craft the work of art from butter donated by Land O’ Lakes in Carlisle. The Pennsylvania Farm Show, known to be the nation’s largest indoor agricultural event, features 12,000 competitive exhibits, more than 5,200 of which are animal competitions, plus 300 commercial exhibitors. The 103rd show ran from Jan. 5 to 12.
