Hempfield

Hempfield student will speak at Student Television Network convention

Hempfield High School has built a reputation for developing quality communicators.

Junior Izzy Heisey is the latest to earn the chance to show what she can do on a national stage.

Izzy will be one of 25 presenters and hosts from across the country at the Student Television Network (STN) Convention, which will run from Saturday, March 1, to Tuesday, March 4, in Tampa, Fla.

Izzy will speak during the closing ceremonies. She will not get her script until moments before her presentation because she could be announcing the STN award winners, and that information must remain confidential until the announcement.

“We will get a practice script,” Izzy said. “They want you to make

it how you would sound and what you would say.”

Fifteen Hempfield High students will attend the conference.

“At STN, there are all kinds of competitions you can enter,” Izzy said. “I’m doing a broadcasting segment with a group of students from our school. Another group of students from my class is doing the music video competition.”

Izzy earned the invitation to speak at the convention by excelling in an audition. The prompt was, “Pretend you’re doing an opening speech for STN.”

Having attended last year’s conference, Izzy’s experience paid off. “I remember how much energy everyone had,” she said.

“It was filled with a lot of excitement, so me and my friend Ace Brown auditioned together. We made a script, filmed, and edited it, then submitted it. We tried to make it fun with edits and transitions.”

If you are 58 years old or older and enjoy staying active, the Lanco Senior Softball league is looking for you.

Men and women within a 100mile radius of Lancaster city who are interested in playing can contact league president Dave Dean at 610-334-1124 or email treasurer Dave Zerbe at dzerbe@ comcast.net.

“We are looking for players,” said Zerbe, who resides in

Strasburg. “Anybody interested in playing should call or email and give us your contact information so we can follow up with you. But if there are people who can’t play anymore, but would like to help coach, we’d be interested in those people.”

Each team has a coach and an assistant coach, and some serve as league officers and board members.

Dorothy and Phil Smith of Salunga will have the first show they’ve written performed by an official theater organization for the first time when the Promise Players perform its spring musical in March.

The Smiths and their son, C.J., teamed to pen “Muddled Memories: A Bible Journey,” a family-friendly, staged musical with a lighthearted look at Bible memories with something seriously muddled in the middle, including a monkey, an emu, and

a week. The seven-inning games will start at 6 p.m. and will generally be over by 7:15 or 7:30, Zerbe said.

It is a modified league, which means pitchers throw as fast as they can while using a bowling-style motion, Zerbe explained. There is no sliding or base stealing. American Softball Association (ASA) rules and ASA umpires are used.

“We do have fun, but it can get very competitive,” said Zerbe. “You have different calibers of teams. You have some teams where guys are just trying to have fun and enjoy the game. If they win, they win. If they lose, they lose. Other guys like to win and win it all.”

We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, Scouting groups, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.

“It’s competitive,” Zerbe said. “These fellas, most of them have been playing some sort of organized ball in high school right through college and in different softball leagues as they got older and still enjoy the game.”

The median age of players in the league is 64, Zerbe said.

Teams will begin practicing in April, and there will occasionally be in-season practices. The season will start in either the last week of April or first week of May with one or two games

In addition to Rapho Park in Mount Joy, Ephrata Middle School, Garrett Field in Willow Street, and Strasburg Jaycee Park, Stauffer Park in Lancaster is used for championship games and could host regular-season games this year. There were 17 regular-season games last year, with that total depending on the number of teams in the league. The regular season is slated to finish at the end of July, followed by the double-elimination playoffs with all teams qualifying and seeded based on record. A champion is crowned from both

divisions.

Zerbe is hoping to attract more players for the 2025 campaign. “It seems like we’re struggling with having fellas in their early 50s who are excited about continuing to play softball,” he said. “Some of the guys are coming back and playing, but recruiting new fellas seems to be a little harder.”

The requirements are simple. “You have to have a love of the sport, baseball or softball,” said Zerbe. “You have to love the sport to want to play. You have to have a little bit of competitive spirit and ability to play. That being said, if you want to enjoy and meet some good fellas who are unified in their ability

If you can come out and one night a week you run and bat and throw the ball, it keeps your blood pumping and it keeps you young. Come out and have a good time and enjoy the camaraderie. a super man.

Dorothy, the show’s director, wrote the dialogue and contributed some of the lyrics. Phil, the musical director, and C.J., a professional musician who now lives in Allentown, wrote the music and the majority of the lyrics.

“Probably my favorite thing musically is directing and/or hearing something I’ve composed being performed. That is a big joy,” said Phil, who is also the director of the Bainbridge Band and writes some arrangements for that group.

The Promise Players is a Christian theater group and a ministry of Lampeter Church of the Brethren, where its shows are held.

The members of the cast are from all over Lancaster County. The cast is made up of Melissa Blasick, Kiara Hess, Linda Ross, Michelle Coblentz, Emily Bauman,

Debbie Houck, Pat Gruber, Jean Ross, Emma Stahl, Marty Raine, Bella Sedano-Perez, Sofie Sedano-Perez, Elyse Hershey, Lena Good, Steve Quigg, Chris Gruber, Wayne Rhinier, Ken Hess, Jim Mahoney, Lanny Millette, Micah Raine, and Levi Livengood.

Anna Breneman is the stage manager.

“Muddled Memories: A Bible Journey” is a comedy featuring puns and plays on words, Dorothy said. “We take a series of Bible stories, and we muddle something in the middle,” she said. “We try to follow true to the message behind the Bible story, and we do emphasize that. It’s just in the acting out of it we twist some things.”

For example, the musical features Garden of Sweden instead of the Garden of Eden. “Rather than having people naked on stage and realize they’re naked, we

pretend they’re in Sweden, and not realizing it’s cold until the apple is eaten. Then they’re freezing,” Phil explained.

The group puts on two shows a year, a play in the fall and a musical in the spring. The productions traditionally raise money for a Christian nonprofit. This spring, the beneficiary is the Manheim Community Life Group’s Home on Ferdinand, a transitional living program designed to provide support for women and children currently facing homelessness.

“It always feels good,” Dorothy said. “We have benefited a number of nonprofits. They always are appreciative, and it’s always nice to give back to the community.”

The Promise Players group has been doing just that since Doreen Creighton founded it 25 years ago.

Ken Hess was a member of the original troupe and is still active.

“I never thought I could act,” Hess said. “Never, ever, ever. That wasn’t on my radar. One time they needed a Lazarus and asked if I would do it. The choir director at the church I was attending asked me to do it. I said I had never done anything like this before. He said, ‘Well, we’ll teach you.’ That was the beginning, and I fell in love with it. And I’m doing my 40th show this spring.”

Hess has seen the Promise Players come a long way. “I didn’t know much about the ministry until I started getting involved with it,” said Hess. “The original director (Creighton) wanted something that was not secular, that was all sacred, all religious, that you could have fun with it and a lot of comedy. And it had to have a message. It started very slowly, and it built and built and built. There were times where they were less than 50 people in the audience.”

“Muddled Memories: A Bible Journey” will be performed Thursday, March 20, to Sunday, March 23, and Thursday, March 27, to Sunday, March 30, at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster. Show times will be 7:30 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays, 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturdays, and 2:30 p.m. Sundays.

Reservations are strongly encouraged, although seating is general admission on a first-come, first-served basis. The Smiths suggest people make reservations at https://promiseplayers. org, as Promise Players shows are often sold out. For more information, call the church office Mondays to Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at 717-464-2050.

Today, Ewha remains one of the largest female schools and one of the most prestigious universities in South Korea.

GriefShare meetings planned

Faith United Methodist Church, 1290 Fruitville Pike, Lititz, will begin another GriefShare support group in March. The ministry seeks to offer comfort and support to people who have lost a loved one. It is open to all community members.

Meetings will take place from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Mondays, March 3 to June 9, with the exception of April 21 and Memorial

It worked. “I was really excited,” said Izzy. “I was waking up on a snow day and I grabbed my iPad to look at my assignments, and I saw I had a message from (teacher) Mr. (Matt) Binder. He wrote my name in all caps with a bunch of exclamation points, and it said ‘STN presenter,’ so I knew it. … I’m really excited to represent Hempfield. I hope I do a good job.”

Previous Hempfield High students Taylor Hess, Frank Russo, and Maguire Younes have been presenters at the national conference in recent years. “I looked up to Maguire a lot,” Izzy said. “He was a really nice guy and a really good student, so I’m happy to follow in his footsteps.”

Izzy credits Hempfield’s communications technology program. “Here at comm tech we do a lot of projects from broadcast journalism to the film side, even sports media, and social media,” she said. “Through comm tech, I’ve gotten a tase of everything.”

As a sophomore, Izzy was involved with news-centered programs, doing a news segment on an in-school program, Hempfield Happenings, and working with classmates for a monthly show that aired on Comcast.

“We focused a lot on broadcast journalism, so that’s where I’ve learned how to speak and be presentable, which helped me get chosen to be a presenter,” Izzy said.

She has added executive producer to her list of credits. “This year, (comm tech class) is a bit more independent, so last semester I helped with our Comm Tech II class, which is our daily announcements show,

which airs every day here,” Izzy said. “I was helping them and teaching them.”

This semester, she is a social media coordinator, running comm tech’s Instagram, X, and TikTok accounts. “Getting to do everything has really helped me figure which part I like if I choose to go to college for something based on this,” said Izzy, who is also a marketing intern for Compleat Restorations. “It’s really hard because I like everything, but getting to do everything makes it clear what I’m good at and what I’m most passionate about.”

In her senior year, Izzy is planning to focus on the sports media side as well as videography. She is also passionate about math and finance and is unsure what she will major in as a college student.

Binder, a comm tech teacher, stated that it is easy to see why Izzy is successful. “In talking to Izzy, you get a sense of who she is as a communicator,” said Binder. “She has a friendly disposition. She’s confident. Personable and confident at the same time. She has what STN is looking for as far as being a presenter for all the people who are going to be there.”

Hempfield’s comm tech classes supply students with the capability to play a key role in their learning. “I believe strongly in student ownership, that it’s the students’ program,” said Binder, a WGAL meteorologist, who began teaching in the district since 1996 and has been at the high school since 2010. “I put a lot of confidence in them, and our district administration puts a lot of confidence in them.”

Day, May 26. If meetings are canceled due to weather or other scheduling conflicts, the changes will be announced at www. faithumc.us.

There is a fee for the workbook; scholarships are available if needed. For more information and to register, visit www.grief share.org/groups/261153.

Tree Tenders training posted

The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay will hold its kickoff training for Lancaster County Tree Tenders on Saturday, March 1, at Bright Side Opportunities Center, 515 Hershey Ave., Lancaster, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Lancaster County Tree Tenders is a volunteer initiative focused on increasing urban tree canopy throughout the county by planting and caring for trees and teaching neighbors about trees.

By planting trees, residents can directly help improve local stream health and the health of the Chesapeake Bay. Trees provide many ecosystem services. They are one of the most cost-effective measures to improve local air and water quality, and

in urban areas, trees shade impervious surfaces and reduce stormwater runoff while also providing wildlife habitat.

All interested volunteers will receive Penn State Tree Tenders training covering tree biology, common tree stressors, and how to properly plant and care for trees. Penn State urban forester Vinnie Cotrone will provide a live planting demonstration. The training is offered free of cost, but registration is required by Thursday, Feb. 27.

In addition to the training, Tree Tenders participants will meet several times a year to learn together and socialize, and they will work on projects to grow and care for the urban trees in their community.

Lancaster County Tree Tenders is a program coordinated by the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay. Funding for this program - including trees for planting in local communities - comes from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay is a regional, nonprofit organization working to bring together communities, companies, and conservationists to improve the area’s lands and waters. The organization has an office in Lancaster.

LancasterHistory plans event at Decades

LancasterHistory will hold a History Happy Hour event on Monday, March 10, at Decades, 438 N. Queen St., Lancaster. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and the main program will begin at 6 p.m.

Attendees will learn about the history of the building now occupied by a vintage arcade, bowling alley, and restaurant. Three speakers will discuss the building’s role in Lancaster’s military, sports, and media history.

The building opened in

1916 and was named the Stahr Armory in 1956 after Lancaster’s Dr. Charles P. Stahr, a brigadier general in the Medical Corps of the Pennsylvania National Guard. Over a 100-year period, the armory served as home to the Pennsylvania National Guard and the Lancaster Red Roses of the Continental Basketball Association and as a community space for food bazaars and performances. It was eventually transformed into Decades.

Tickets include admis -

sion to the event, one drink, light appetizers, and complimentary tokens for arcade games. Additional drinks may be purchased separately. The event is suggested for people age 18 or older, and individuals must be 21 years or older to consume alcoholic beverages. To purchase tickets, visit www.lancasterhistory. org or call 717-392-4633. Advance registration is recommended, as walk-ins will only be accepted if tickets remain.

Bingo event to aid Greystone Manor

The Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center (GMTRC) invites the public to attend its second annual “Heart of Greystone Bingo” fundraiser on Thursday, March 13, from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Doors will open at 4 p.m., and homemade food will be available. There will be 20 games of winner’s choice bingo as well as giveaway drawings.

A discount will be offered through Friday, Feb. 28, with tickets available for full price

after that, including at the door. To purchase tickets, search for “2nd Annual Heart of Greystone BINGO” at www.eventbrite.com. Last year’s bingo raised $18,000. All proceeds from the event will support GMTRC’s equine-assisted services program, which has provided horsemanship lessons and group programming for children and adults with special needs in Lancaster since 1981. Each year the program has grown; launched with seven riders, it now enrolls more than 100 participants

each year in a variety of lessons and programs. Among those participating are boys and girls age 4 and up as well as adults through senior age; the participants have a variety of diagnoses, including multiple sclerosis, Down syndrome, and autism. A 501(c)(3) organization, GMTRC is located at 1063 Hartman Station Road, Lancaster.

For more information about the bingo and GMTRC, email Judy Davis at president@greystonemanor trc.org.
