Hempfield

Members of the Hempfield orchestra received an opportunity of a lifetime as they learned from one of the preeminent musicians in his field.

Sponsored by the Hempfield Foundation, Tracy Silverman served as a guest instructor during rehearsals Jan. 27 and 28, which culminated with a public concert the evening of Jan. 28. Silverman, who has graced major stages around the globe, is one of the first builders and players of the six-string electric violin and has premiered and recorded several major new electric violin concertos written specifically for him.

“I bring nontraditional artists to work with the students because orchestra strings are typically associated with your

serious music, your classical music,” Hempfield orchestra director Nile Wilson said.

“Although the students enjoy that type of stuff, they also want to play other stuff. I want them to realize you could play all these different styles of music on your classical instruments. I want to widen their musical tastes.”

Wilson likes to compare attempting various styles of music to trying new things to eat. “It’s like food,” she said. “You might not like certain foods, but you don’t know what you don’t like or like if you don’t try it. And sometimes if you eat it often enough, you get an acquired taste for it. That’s what I’m hoping the students get out of this.”

Wilson said she is never certain what her students are gaining from the experience but is confident they will come to appreciate the opportunity. “Hopefully this

The Lancaster County WoodCarvers group will hold its 50th annual Woodcarving Festival on Saturday, March 15, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, March 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Millersville University’s Student Memorial Center, 108 Shenks Lane, Millersville. Parking is free. Admission is free for those with a military

ID and for students with high school or post-high school student ID.

“It’s going to be the largest show we’ve had,” said Jeffrey Pretz, who is a member of the Lancaster County WoodCarvers.

“We’re having commemorative carving knives created that will be for sale. We’re having the Caricature Carvers of America.

There will be a lot of bird carvers and spoon carvers and other

Dayspring Christian Academy will use its open house to show visitors what’s special about the school.

“What I would want current parents and prospective parents to understand is we are not training children. We are training adults,” headmaster Dan Stone said. “We’re training future adults. These children all have a future adulthood, and we are trying to partner with their parents to build into them what they need to be God-fearing and successful adults. We want to be able to demonstrate the different ways we do that.”

Dayspring will host an all-school open house Thursday, March 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the school, 120 College Ave., Mountville. Families will be able to tour the school and visit with teachers and can register

kinds of carvings, as well.”

The featured guest carver will be Joe You, past president of Caricature Carvers of America. A retired dentist from California, You is regarded as a creative and accomplished caricature carver.

“People can come to purchase supplies for carving as well as carvings that are handmade by individuals who are there,” Pretz said. “They can also come for inspiration of a great hobby.”

Among the 60 exhibitors will be members of the Lancaster County WoodCarvers’ sister clubs, including the American National Cane Club (ANCC), a club that focuses on canes and walking sticks and meets monthly in Lancaster County; the Manheim Township WoodCarvers, a club that focuses on carving together and crafting Christmas ornaments for hospice and meets monthly in Lancaster County; the Conewago Carvers, a club

that meets in East Berlin; the West Shore Woodcarvers, a club that is active in Mechanicsburg; the Yorkarvers, a club from York; the PA Delaware Valley Woodcarvers, a club from Bucks County; and the William Rush Woodcarvers, a club in Media. The Pennsylvania Gourd Society will present a display of its art with gourds.

There will be a free hands-on carving station for new carvers or those who just want to try carving. All supplies and tools will be available for use with basic safety and techniques shared. Instruction and guidance will be provided by club members. Each session will take about an hour and will start on the hour and on the half hour. At the end of the hour, most will leave with their carved project. Participants must be at least 18 years old, and everyone must sign a waiver to participate in a session.

Original woodcarvings

will be available for purchase from many of the artists and carvers. Vendors will also sell carving and art tools, supplies, books, and wood. Among the vendors expected are Art From the Bark, Kathryn and Dennis Overcash from Rhoadesville, Va.; Badger State Blades, Ashten Brown from Wisconsin; Hillcrest Carving, Don Swartz from Lancaster County; Ritter Carvers Inc., Barbara Ritter from Colmar; The Carving Glove Guy, Don Butler from Michigan; and Windy Cape Studios, Joshua Walters from Annville.

Professional sharpening will be available for woodcarving knives and gouges. A silent auction will be held for a number of carvings and wildlife art donated by exhibitors and club members, as well as a variety of other items. Proceeds from the silent auction will be split between the club’s Beginner Carver Fund and one local nonprofit organization.

Door prizes of carvings done by the Lancaster County WoodCarvers will be awarded regularly throughout the festival.

The Lancaster County WoodCarvers group, made

up of 75 members, meets the third Tuesday evening of each month at Community United Methodist Church, 130 Tennyson Drive, Lancaster. Carving starts at 6 p.m. with a meeting and show-and-tell at 7 p.m.

The group holds an “open carve” at Community United Methodist Church on the first Thursday of every month at 9 a.m.and 6 p.m.

“It’s an outlet for my creativity,” Pretz said. “But also there are a lot of books and patterns that you can copy. It’s something you can do that’s not noisy, you’re using your hands, and you can do it almost any place.”

is something they will look back on and appreciate they played with a big-name artist,” she said.

It has also been a worthwhile experience for Wilson, who recalls listening to Silverman performing with the Turtle Island String Quartet while she was a high school student in the Philippines.

“I listened to his CDs in the ’90s, and now I’m meeting him in the flesh,” Wilson said.

Hempfield senior guitarist Owen Bush is not a member of the orchestra but joined the ensemble for this performance where he performed on songs “Kashmir” and “Purple Haze.”

“It’s pretty cool to learn these rock songs, and it’s cool to do it with an orchestra,” Owen said. “A lot of popular rock songs have an orchestra in them. I’m very much a background instrument, but it’s still very cool to be involved.”

Sophomore Emma Keller plays violin in the first violin section. She likes performing songs “Stairway to Heaven,” “Seven Nation Army,” and “Clocks” by Coldplay and has enjoyed spending time with Silverman. “I think he’s really cool,” said Emma. “He’s one of my favorite artists who has come to the school because he’s so chill and he works great with students. I like it a lot.”

The Hempfield orchestra is made up of 65 high

school performers and 95 middle-schoolers. Wilson has brought in several guests over the past four years, including a jazz violinist, fiddle group, and Latin music performer.

“Tracy is very multistyled,” Wilson said. “He doesn’t like to be boxed in to one particular style, even though he plays jazz. He also plays rock. He plays multi-genres. Not many people play the electric violin and have music written specifically for him.”

Having performed across the globe alongside some of the world’s greatest musicians, Silverman still relishes the chance to work with aspiring players.

“It’s always inspiring to work with kids and to see the light bulbs go off over their heads as they get stuff,” Silverman said. “We were just working on blues and getting them to hear the different chords of the blues, which is kind of new territory for string players. ... It’s also important for string players to be able to play with other kids, other instrumentalists who are guitar players, piano players, who are maybe playing pop music, and be able to improvise and rhythmically keep up with popular music as well. That’s kind of my specialty and what I focus on.”

Silverman hopes he is having an impact on the students no matter what career they pursue. “Every -

Lenten sermon series posted

The Veritas Community will offer a sermon series titled “Tables” during Lent. The series will explore stories from the book of Luke that center around Jesus going to, being at, or coming from a gathering around a table. The series will focus on what believers can learn about following Jesus from these stories.

Dates and Scriptures will include Sunday, March 9, Luke 5:27-32; Sunday, March 16, Luke 7:36-50; Sunday, March 23, Luke 9:10-17; Sunday, March 30, Luke 14:7-11; Sunday, April 6, Luke 14:15-24; and Sunday, April 13, Luke 22:7-23 and John 13:1-17. The April 13 service will

body starts their musical journey somewhere,” Silverman said. “In some ways it’s more important to have that opportunity to influence their future. Players who are professional, finished players, it’s fun to play with them, but I feel like I’m doing more good here than in that situation. I’m kind of changing the future of string playing by working with them now. Not everyone is going to stay with music. Certainly not everyone is going to become a professional musician, but a few of them will. Hopefully many of them will stay with music, if not professionally, on an amateur or hobby level, and hopefully they’ll remember some of the things we did here and be able to take that with them.”

Silverman said the two most important lessons he wants Hempfield students to take from this experience are “a good sense of rhythm and how important that is in playing contemporary music and also a sense of harmony, which a lot of string players don’t think about because we’re not a chordal instrument.

We always rely on guitar players or piano players to accompany us, but I think it’s important to start hearing the chords in the music we’re playing.”

On Good Friday, April 18, a service will be held at 7 p.m.; the Scripture will be Luke 22:39-23:46. The service on Easter Sunday, April 20, will focus on Luke 24:13-35.

The Veritas Community gathers every Sunday at 10:30 a.m. on the second floor of HUB 450, 450 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The first 15 minutes of the event are dedicated to fellowship time. the Book of Esther. There is an opening for a new queen, and Hadassah, who is an attractive and fearless Jewish 17-yearold, wants to apply, even though she knows that a Jewish woman has never been chosen and probably never will be. She changes her name to Esther, keeps her religion a secret, and wins the contest held to choose the queen. Meanwhile, Haman, the mean, anti-Semitic prime minister, convinces the king to issue a decree to kill all the Jews. Esther and her older cousin, Mordechai, who raised her, must save their people from death.

Many of the major songs from “The Music Man” - such as “Till There Was You,” “Seventy-Six Trombones,” “Marian the Librarian,” “Ya Got Trouble,” “Shipoopi,” “Good Night, My Someone,” “The Wells Fargo Wagon,” “Iowa Stubborn,” “Gary, Indiana,” “Pick-a-Little, Talk-a-Little,” and three barbershop numbers - will be presented as parodies.

The lead roles are played by Lisa Miller as Hadassah/ Esther; Stu Blumenthal, King Ahasuerus; Harvey Scolnick, Haman; David Stameshkin, Mordechai; and Kevin Babione, Elin Ketels, Jason Meyer, and Alan Levine as the four barbershop quartet members. Also performing are Missy DePietro, Noah Goldman, Ilene Kochel, Rachel Levine, C. Tyler Mandel, Schuyler Nissly, Rabbi Jack Paskoff, Abigail Rackliffe, Elizabeth Rackliffe, Janine Riben, Elaine Rostolsky, Colleen Stameshkin, Benjamin Weaver, Jeff Woodman, Sally Woodman, and Alice Yerman.

Levine is the musical director, and Nissly and Babione are the technical directors. Aaron Zinner, Tama Etra, and Jacqueline Ketels coordinate special props, and Bethany Kristich is assistant director. The show is produced, directed, and written by David Stameshkin. The performance is free and open to the public.

Annual fish fry will serve up tradition and community

When St. Peter Roman Catholic Church holds its annual Lenten fish frys, there’s a whole lot more going on than just tasty food.

“The St. Peter’s fish fry is more than just a fundraiser - it’s one of our favorite traditions that brings together great food and great company,” said Fran Redman, president of St. Peter’s Parish Council of Catholic Women. “Guests can expect a warm and welcoming atmosphere, a delicious menu of homemade crabcakes and other seafood favorites, and the opportunity to connect with friends, neighbors and fellow parishioners. Whether you’re a longtime attendee or a first-time visitor, you’ll leave feeling full and part of something special.”

The fish fry will be served from 4 to 6:30 p.m. on Fridays from March 7 through April 11 in the church’s Parish Center, Second and Union streets, Columbia. The event is open to the public, and food will be available for dine-in or takeout.

The menu will include platters of one or two crab cakes, baked haddock, fried fillet of fish, fried shrimp, scallops, oysters, fish sticks or clam strips. Macaroni and cheese, french fries, a vegetable, coleslaw and a dinner roll are included in the price of the platters. A la carte items include a crab cake, fish fillet or oyster sandwich; french fries; macaroni and cheese; stewed tomatoes; coleslaw; and cheesy bread sticks with marinara sauce. Quarts and pints of homemade soups will be on the menu

as well. Soup may also be purchased by the bowl. A variety of drinks and individually wrapped baked goods made by the women of the parish will also be available for purchase.

This is the 46th year for the fish fry, which raises funds for the parish.

“The funds raised go directly to supporting St. Peter’s Church, helping to sustain our parish and its ministries such as the local Off the Streets Susquehanna ministry, (along with) A Woman’s Concern, international Water for Life project and supporting a home for the destitute and dying in India,” Redman shared.

It’s no surprise the fish fry has such a long legacy at St. Peter’s, she said.

“The fish fry has endured for 46 years because of the deep faith and commitment and dedication of our parishioners,” she noted, adding that the event is sponsored by the Parish Council of Catholic Women and the Parish Holy Name Society. “Year after year, volunteers dedicate their time and effort to making this event a success, ensuring that it remains a cherished tradition.”

She hopes people who have attended the meal in the past will return this year, and she also invites new people to check it out.

”The fish fry is an important fundraiser for our parish, but it’s just as valuable for the sense of community it builds,” she said. “It’s a chance for people to come together, catch up with old friends, meet new ones and enjoy a welcoming atmosphere while supporting St. Peter’s.”

Hasting cited an example from the recent Speech Meet semifinals, where second- and third-graders presented poems, passages of Scripture, and political addresses.

“Students stood in front of a roomful of people, made eye contact, and recited the work flawlessly with good inflection,” she said. “It’s a good skill, and they learn not to be intimidated by things that seem hard.”

Dayspring, founded in 1987, is one of many Principle Approach schools in America. “The Principle Approach is America’s historic method of education that places God’s Word as the foundation for every subject,” said Stone. “It teaches children to reason and think critically and logically and to make biblical applications to all areas of life.”

Stone stated it is the kind of education that dates back to Colonial times when the Bible was the primary source of all learning.

There is a strong emphasis on primary source research, public speaking, persuasive writing, classical languages, and classical literature, Stone said. Middle school students study Latin, and high school seniors take New Testament Greek.

“The Principle Approach is the special sauce, if you will,” Stone said. “It’s a very distinct way of doing things, and it is what makes us who we are.”

The Foundation for American Christian Education (FACE) is the parent organization of the Principle Approach. Dayspring is a model demonstration school, meaning schools implementing the Principle Approach send teachers and administrators to observe Dayspring.

The school’s Principle Approach curriculum includes many in-depth field study experiences, including time in Plymouth, Mass., to study the Pilgrims; Boston to study America’s founding; Gettysburg; the Creation Museum and Ark Encounter in Kentucky; and Washington, D.C. As a culmination to the Principle Approach education, seniors travel to Israel for a nearly two-week field study.

Students also take trips closer to home. “One of the ways we live this type of education is to take the kids out of the building,” Hasting said. “We have more than 60 field studies from preschool through 12th grade. So they learn in the classroom, and they go learn on location.”

Dayspring offers a wide variety of extracurricular activities, including Lower School and Upper School sports: soccer, volleyball, basketball, cross-country, track, and golf. Through partnerships with McCaskey High School, Columbia

High School, and Penn Manor High School, students can participate in those schools’ sports, including football, baseball, swimming, lacrosse, field hockey, and tennis. Additionally, courses and clubs include Lower School, middle school, and high school choirs; performance choir; and art. Students in fourth grade learn to play the ukulele while fifthgrade students all learn to play the violin. Students in grades six through 12 also have opportunities to try many new experiences through a wide array of clubs, ranging from STEM to athletics to music and art.

Initiative to support food program

The GIANT Company has announced the return of its annual Feeding School Kids initiative, which is in its fifth year. Customers at Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores are invited to round up their purchases to the nearest dollar, buy a reusable bag, or convert their choice points into a donation for their local public school districts’ food programs now through Sunday, March 31.

To launch the program, The GIANT Company will donate $100,000. Through the more than $7.6 million provided to schools through the Feeding School Kids program, public school districts have been able to support

meal programs and address food insecurity from supplying backpacks with weekend food to clearing outstanding student lunch debt to building on-campus food pantries and establishing garden programs.

In 2024, for example, Eastern York School District covered negative student lunch balances and provided nutritious breakfasts to students on state-mandated testing days, impacting 2,200 students. In addition, the volunteer organization NutriPacks served 800 students each week, providing access to nutritious food on weekends and school breaks.

Herb Guild sets program

The Conestoga Herb Guild will offer a program, “Designing Your Outdoor Home,” on Wednesday, March 12, at 6:30 p.m. at the Millersville VFW, 219 Walnut Hill Road, Millersville.

Landscape architect Joel Young will speak about how to make a landscape, herb garden, or patio more enjoyable and transform it into a new extension of a home. He will present landscape design and planting design tips.

Young is a registered landscape architect in Pennsylvania and New York and is a partner with RETTEW Associates, a regional land planning, engineering, and environmental ser -

vices firm. He has worked on landscape design and planning projects for residences, medical centers, and college campuses throughout the Mid-Atlantic region for more than 30 years. Young received his bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture from Penn State University and a master’s degree in landscape architecture and regional planning form Harvard University Graduate School of Design. He lives in Willow Street with his wife and their three sons.
