teams serve, she has also learned a lot from the experience. “We try to go in with a mutual learning mindset,” Cobb explained. “We want to serve and help where we can, but we go prepared to learn about (the people we’re visiting), about ourselves, and about God.” Cobb praised the generosity of the Lancaster County community in making the mission trips possible. “People donate above and beyond,” he said. “That’s why sometimes a jar of pickles sells for several hundred dollars.” The students who will go on the trips will serve at the auction, and Jenna noted that she plans to donate crispy rice treats to be sold either at the concession stand or on the auction block. “Because everything’s donated, food sales go toward the (fundraising) goal, so people can come just to eat and still support the auction,” Cobb said. A caterer will provide concession classics as well as chicken tetrazzini and several soups. Soft-serve ice cream and beverages will be available for purchase as well. From 9 a.m. to noon, youth group members will also provide free child care for youngsters age 2 through fourth grade. They will play games, color pictures, and watch movies. Auction highlights will include baked goods, homegrown fruit and sweet corn, farm-raised eggs, locally made chocolates, refreshed furniture, quilts and comforters, bicycles, gift certificates from 40 businesses, and more. Donations for the auction will be accepted leading up to the auction and on the day of the event. Typically, the auction runs until at least 3 p.m. and sometimes until 4 p.m., said Ryan Cobb, pastor of student ministries. He expressed a desire for the event to generate $30,000, which will cover the cost of two mission trips that teams from the youth group will be taking this summer. Seven upperclassmen and three adults will travel to San Juan, Puerto Rico, from Sunday, June 16, to Friday, June 21. Thirst Missions has connected the team with local churches and pastors, and the group members expect to help with disaster relief in response to Hurricane Maria. Then, a team of 30 students and adults will go to Pittsburgh from Sunday, June 23, to Friday, June 28. This is the third summer that Manor Church has worked with Group Missions to partner with churches and nonprofits in the Pittsburgh area. The team members expect to perform a lot of community service and interact with children at a Boys and Girls Club. “(The most challenging part last year) was leaving,” remarked senior Owen Rohrer. “I worked with the kids (in elementary school). At first, they were shy, but by the end, they didn’t want us to leave. That was hard.” Senior Dylan Jacyszyn has traveled twice to New York for disaster relief, so visiting Pittsburgh last year was quite different. Dylan reported that he worked in the garden at the home of a woman who fostered children, and he helped sort donations at a food bank. “(I learned) to appreciate what I have, especially (when I volunteered) at the food bank,” Dylan said, explaining that he had taken for granted the ability to buy what he wants at the grocery store. Senior Jenna Flatley also shared that while her goal is to help the communities where the

On Friday, March 8, MHALC will hold the fundraiser, now in its third decade, at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 64 Hershey Ave., Lancaster. Dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m., and the live and silent auctions will begin at 6:45 p.m. Silent auction winners will be announced throughout the evening. The Lancaster County Suicide Prevention Coalition, also an MHALC program, brings together community partners with individuals dedicated to reducing suicide rates. Other offerings include mental health screenings, a wellness program, and education services. Kim McDevitt, executive director of MHALC, said that she is looking forward to the buffet because it brings a fun element to the work of the organization. “I love that this is a casual, fun event where all come together to support mental health and wellness in the community,” she stated. The organization hopes to raise $30,000 during the evening. Tickets to the event are discounted for children ages 6 to 10, and children age 5 and under will be admitted for free. Fissella Qualifies For PIAA Championships By Ara Grigorian

The District Three Class AAA Swimming and Diving Championships were held at Cumberland Valley High School on March 1 and 2. Andre Fissella’s performances in the 100yard breaststroke and the 200-yard individual medley qualified the Hempfield senior to compete in the PIAA Class AAA state championships scheduled for March 15 and 16 at Bucknell University. “In the 100 breaststroke he was just short of winning by two-tenths of a second, pointed out head coach Brittany Bertoli. “He dropped his time by almost a second. Fissella registered a time of 57.54 seconds. In the 200 IM, he finished fourth and also qualified for states. He posted a time of 1:55.71. Bertoli explained that in determining district placing and times qualifying for states can often be a game of wait-and-see, depending on achievements in other districts across the commonwealth. “In the 100 breaststroke he’s currently sitting at the fourth-fastest time, she said. “District One was waiting to swim its second day on Sunday. We’re waiting for the state (PIAA) website to post the psych sheets. On Friday in the girls’ competition, sophomore Maggie Shaffer swam in the 200 freestyle while Katie Yoder swam in the 50 free. The following day Shaffer and Yoder were part of the 400 freestyle relay with sophomore Sophia Vitko and junior

Katelyn Wiglesworth. “Maggie was right at her best time in the 200 freestyle, said Bertoli. “She dropped 15 hundredths of a second. Shaffer posted a time of 1:59.10 and finished in 14th place. She also swam the 100 butterfly and finished 17th with a time of 1:00.73. “She put in a great effort even though she didn’t have her best time, said Bertoli. Yoder’s time of 24.82 seconds was her best time in the 50 freestyle. She placed 16th in the event. “The district meet is just so fast, Bertoli noted. “You really have to have some fast swims to get into states. Wiglesworth and Yoder both swam in the 100 freestyle, finishing 21st and 26th, respectively, with times of 54.89 and 55.53. In the 400 free relay, the foursome put up an impressive ninth-place finish at 3:45.44. “They all had great splits, said Bertoli. “Maggie split a 55.54. Sophia Vitko had a 1:00.19, her best split of the season. Katelyn and Katie had almost exactly the same split. Wiglesworth’s split was 54.86 and Yoder’s 54.85 in the relay. The foursome dropped three seconds from the time they posted in the Lancaster-Lebanon League championships. In the league championship weekend, which took place Feb. 8 and 9, this quartet’s time of 3:48.41 had given the Black Knights fourth in the 400 free relay. On Saturday, Wiglesworth took part in the 100 backstroke with her best time of the season at 1:02.26.

Fun Walk Will Kick Off Fair The Walking on Sunshine Fun Walk will take place on Saturday, March 23, at the Bright Side Opportunities Center, 515 Hershey Ave., Lancaster. Registration will open at 9 a.m., and the walk will step off at 9:30 a.m. Water and snacks will be provided. The event will kick off the 14th annual Bright Side Opportunities Center Health and Fitness Fair.

She placed 22nd in the race by dropping over one second in her best time. “This has been a great group of girls, Bertoli commented. “Every one of them will be back next year. “Everyone was happy with their district meet times, and they plan on putting in hard work next year to get there. “We talk a lot about having a direction and a purpose - knowing

Seedling Sale from pg 1 The Lancaster County Conservation District (LCCD) is holding its 45th annual tree seedling sale. Orders for conifers, hardwoods, wildlife food sources, groundcover, and pollinatorfriendly perennials will be accepted through Monday, March 11. The preordered and prepaid plants will be ready for pickup on Thursday, April 11, in the auditorium at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. “That’s the weekend before Easter,” remarked education coordinator Sallie Gregory. “Hopefully folks will consider purchasing (plants) to celebrate Easter and Earth Day, which is on April 22.” Gregory explained that conservation districts were created in response to the Dust Bowl, in which windstorms caused massive soil erosion in the Midwest in the early 1930s. Men and boys employed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) planted trees around the nation, including Pennsylvania, to reduce erosion, especially along streambanks. The first Earth Day was observed in 1970, and the LCCD launched its first tree seedling sale in 1974 to celebrate Earth Day and honor the CCC.

“It combined the effort to make trees available to everybody and conserve soil and waterways,” Gregory shared. The tree sale has continued for nearly a half-century. It is the only fundraising event for the LCCD, which, as an annex to county government, receives some public funding as well as grants and private contributions. The funds are used to provide education and watershed programs, which are held in classrooms or on individual waterways where volunteers are working on stream cleanups, Gregory said. The education programs are available for teachers in kindergarten through grade 12, as well as college classes, and all lessons meet state standards for environment and ecology. LCCD also works with classes to perform stream studies, which assess the health of a waterway by cataloging and counting plant, insect, and fish life. There is a second, equally important reason for the seedling sale. “ We’re making trees and other plants accessible for county residents to put in the soil to keep it in place so it doesn’t erode due to wind or rain,” Gregory said. Many of the plants also serve dual purposes,

whether it is providing food for people or wildlife or acting as windbreaks or Christmas trees. The sale organizers make sure they are offering as many native species as possible, and they work with area nurseries to get appropriate stock for the sale. New offerings this year include coralberry, which holds its bright berries through the start of winter, and three self-pollinating fruit trees: Montmorency sour cherry, Klondike white peach, and Coralstar peach. The majority of trees on the sale list are bare root stock that will be dipped in a root preservative gel so that buyers will not have to plant their purchases immediately. As the trees are seedlings, the sale is also offering tubes with stakes designed to protect young plants from stressors and potential damage from deer, moles, voles, and other creatures that would eat their roots or stems. To see a pictorial description list of all species and access an order form, readers may visit www.lancasterconservation.org. For more information or to request that an order form be mailed to them, folks may call the LCCD at 717-299-5361, ext. 5. Payment is due when orders are placed and must be sent to

What You Can Expect • A thorough assessment that will determine the underlying cause or causes of your pain. • A level of personal care with a “hands-on,” manual therapy approach, to relieve your pain. Most of our patients tell us they have not experienced this before. • Excellent results – accomplished by working together with your Doctor of Physical Therapy every visit. Most patients decrease or stop medication use, and get back to doing what they enjoy doing – walking, hobbies, travel, family activities, or sports.

What Our Patients Say “At the time of my initial consult at Hershey Orthopedic & Spine Rehab, I had been experiencing neck, shoulder, and arm pain for several months. The range of motion in my left arm and my upper body strength had decreased significantly. Following examination, my therapist outlined the physical problems that were present, and prescribed a program of manual therapy and focused exercise. Working with him and his team over the past several weeks, I have gained increased flexibility, improved strength and range of motion, and am free of pain in my arms, shoulders, and neck. Not only have my goals been achieved, they have been exceeded!”

* Local physician and professor of surgery “I had seen other health care practitioners for treatment for chronic low back pain and leg pain. They had tried numerous treatments on my back and it wasn’t getting any better. I scheduled an evaluation with Paul at Hershey Orthopedic & Spine Rehab, and based on his evaluation, he suggested I see an orthopedic surgeon to look at my hip. The surgeon felt that my hip was the problem and I needed a hip replacement. I underwent a hip replacement and did my rehab with Paul and his crew. I am now pain-free, so much stronger, walking normal, and back to golfing. I highly recommend Paul and the staff at Hershey Orthopedic & Spine Rehab – they are knowledgeable, professional, and I’m doing so well because of their attention.” * Mike – retired teacher, golfer.

menu will feature spaghetti and meatballs, salad, bread, desserts, and beverages. Meatless and gluten-free entrée options will be available. Also, as is tradition, the Scouts will lead rousing renditions of the song “On Top of Spaghetti” at least three times during the meal, said Scoutmaster Pat Evans. Tickets are required for admission to the dinner, and they may be purchased from a member of Troop 64 or by calling Nina at 717-572-3448. Tickets may also be purchased at the door. The proceeds from the dinner will be divided between Troop 64’s group account and the Scouts’ individual accounts. The group account is used to fund sponsorships for Scouts to attend National Youth Leadership Training and to subsidize the cost of summer camp. The boys’ accounts help to make it possible for them to go camping and take part in other adventures. Highlights this year will include a week of summer camp at Rodney Scout Reservation in Maryland and attendance at World Jamboree, which will take place in West Virginia. World Jamboree was last held in the United States in 1967. “It’s an opportunity for our Scouts to see what Scouting is like around the world,” Pat explained, adding that trading council patches will be one of the tools used to break the ice

among unfamiliar Scouts. “(Trading) forces them to interact with people they wouldn’t otherwise.” A group of 16 Scouts and four adults plans to venture to World Jamboree. In order to save money, the group will stay at a campsite and prepare most of its own meals. The cost per person will be about $500. “We try to keep it as cheap as we can,” Pat said. “Scouting is thrifty. It’s part of the Scout law.” Still, there will be plenty of fun and educational things to do. The group plans to go whitewater rafting, ziplining, mountain biking, and hiking. “Hopefully (they’ll work on) a conservation project while they’re there,” Nina said. “There are lots of opportunities.” In April, the entire troop will have the chance to work on a conservation project close to home. In conjunction with the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, Troop 64 will plant a riparian buffer along Brubaker Run in Rader Park, which is located next to Homestead Village. The Scouts have committed to maintain the buffer for two years. Membership in Troop 64 is open to boys ages 11 to 18. The group meets on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. at Salem Church. For more information about the troop or the spaghetti dinner, readers may call Nina at 717-572-3448.

addiction in the media. The LCRA MEP team will meet with representatives from local media outlets, comprising print, radio, digital, and television, to educate them face-to-face about the disease of addiction and language and image standards. DSAA will host bi-monthly family retreats where adult family members attend a full day of education about addiction, selfcare, and family issues. Many people struggle to understand addiction and how it changes their loved one’s behavior. The family retreats will provide access to education and resources that can help families better support and assist their loved ones, while also teaching self-care tactics to keep the family unit healthy. The Bridges Poverty Task Force aims to support the health and the ability of individuals to withstand challenges, such as

poverty. With their grant, they will host collaboration meetings within the community to address the needs and barriers of those experiencing poverty or other social problems. The meetings will help build awareness of the Bridges Task Force, build community, and provide access to resources to those unable to find help or unaware that help exists. The organization will also host monthly dinners during which providers and parents will be invited to share and collaborate around needs and resources. Compass Mark’s mission is to prevent addiction through education, skill-building, and community mobilization. The nonprofit serves Lancaster and Lebanon counties and seeks to guide and empower all people toward healthy, fulfilling lives free from addiction. Students Mark Catholic Schools Week Students at Resurrection Catholic School celebrated Catholic Schools Week in spite of weather-related cancellations that changed many of their plans for traditional activities. Melanie Martinez won the fifth- and sixth-grade spelling bee on Jan. 30, and Declan Nicodemus won the seventh- and eighth-grade geography bee. Melanie and Declan will represent the school at Diocesan bees in Harrisburg in April. The school celebrated with a bingo event. Multicolored glow sticks shone in a darkened gym during a Light Glows Forth ceremony Jan. 29. The colors represented the various groups that support the school and also the different

ways they contribute. Principal Brenda Weaver thanked each group, and students and guests broke their sticks to release the brightness. Guests represented donors, benefactors, volunteers, families, parishes, current and past students and staff, religious education and the media. On Jan. 28, students created hundreds of valentines for veterans at area veterans’ hospitals. When school closed due to cold weather, the breakfast for families was rescheduled for Feb. 5. Catholic Schools Week took place fron Jan. 27 to Feb. 3. Masses were celebrated both Sundays at St. Anthony, St. Mary, St. Joseph and San Juan Bautista churches.

Resurrection Catholic School kindergartners hold signs and sang “This Little Light of Mine” with their fourth-grade buddies during the Light Glows Forth ceremony at the school Jan. 29.

Craft Workshop Planned Mount Bethel Cemetery, 700 Locust St., Columbia, will hold a program, “Lucy’s Hair Work,” in the cottage on Sunday, March 10, from 1 to 3:30 p.m. The workshop will focus on the Victorian-era tradition of making keepsakes from a loved one’s hair, especially someone who had died. Participants will learn how to create a Victorian hair flower, which they may make into a pin or display in a glass or wooden box, which will be available for purchase. Participants may bring their own hair, or they may use some that will be provided. If participants bring hair, it must be at least 10 inches

in length and the diameter of a pencil, and it must be placed in a resealable bag. The workshop will be led by Civil War re-enactor Lucy Cadwallder from York County. While researching her hobby, she became interested in Victorian hair art and mourning customs. For 13 years, she has been perfecting the art of hair jewelry, which involves human hair intricately woven into bracelets, earrings, rings, and necklaces. There is a fee to attend, and preregistration is required. Space is limited. To register, readers may email friendsofmtbethel@gmail.com.

St. Patrick’s Day Dance Will Benefit Emerald Center Program

Women’s History Month Events Slated March is National Women’s History Month, and YWCA Lancaster has posted several events commemorating the contributions that women have made in the United States. All of these events will take place at YWCA Lancaster, 110 N. Lime Street, Lancaster, and will be free of charge and open to the public. A First Friday All-Women Art Exhibition took place on March 1 and featured work by artists Salina M. Almanzar, Claudia Salazar, Rosa Thomas, and Loryn Spangler-Jones. Additionally, the “Soles of Lancaster” exhibit from the 20th running of YWCA Lancaster’s Race Against Racism was on display, and Elizabethtown College students Elizabeth Baker and Emily Baker provided piano music. On Thursday, March 7, a First Thursday Latino and Women’s Summit will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. through YWCA Lancaster in partnership with

Lancaster First Thursday Latino. Everyone is welcome to the free summit and networking mixer, which is geared toward professionals, entrepreneurs, leaders, and representatives of businesses and organizations in Lancaster and the surrounding region. The Women’s Summit will feature a resource fair for families and a job fair for women, both from 3 to 6 p.m.; seminars on women empowerment from 5 to 7 p.m.; speakers from 7 to 8 p.m.; and a networking hour from 8 to 9 p.m. On Friday, March 8, an International Women’s Day Celebration will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The informal and free drop-in event will celebrate women, women-owned businesses, books about women, movies about women, and more. There will be games, information, and food. To see a listing of all the events, readers may visit www.ywca lancaster.org/womenshistory.

The St. Patrick’s Day Big Band Celebration held at the Emerald Center (The E) is designed for the entertainment of those who enjoy the sounds associated with the musical era that began in 1935. But Mollie Divet, Access to Opportunities assistant director with The E, is equally as excited about what will happen when the music stops. “(When the band) takes a break, (we will) talk about

the (Access to Opportunities) After-School Program,” said Divet. The second St. Patrick’s Day Big Band Celebration, which will benefit the after-school program, will be held at The E, 2120 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, on Saturday, March 16, from 7 to 11 p.m. in the ballroom. Big band music provided by Corsair Blue Jazz Orchestra (CBJO), heavy hors d’oeuvres, and green beverages will all be featured at the

fundraiser. Divet laid out the evening’s schedule by noting that doors will open at 7 p.m. and that background music will be played while appetizers are served. “We will make an introduction and (explain) where the proceeds will go,” said Divet, who noted that the band will begin to play at 8 p.m. During the band’s break at 9 p.m., attendees will learn about the Access to Opportunities program and be given a chance to donate. Individuals will receive a carnation colored to designate a specific donation amount. Divet noted that carnations will be colored green and gold. The band will then resume playing until 10 p.m. CBJO is known for its repertoire of American big band music performances that aim to bring nostalgia and celebrate the nation’s history. CBJO will perform music associated with wellknown favorites including Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Tommy Dorsey, and other great artists of that era. In addition, a dancing group known as The Ladybirds will perform. “(The Ladybirds) will

Corsair Blue Jazz Orchestra (bottom photo) will play at the St. Patrick’s Day Big Band Celebration at the Emerald Center (The E) on March 16 to help fund a STEM curriculum for the Access to Opportunities After-School Program (top photo), also held at The E. encourage others to get up and dance,” said Divet, who added that dancing will be strongly encouraged this year. Organizers hope to have members of the local ballroom dance and swing dance communities present as well. The Access to Opportunities After-School Program currently serves nearly 30 students in grades two through four from Nitrauer and Brecht elementary schools. “The students come Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m.,” said Divet, who explained that the students are served a hot meal provided by a partnership with the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. The program includes yoga and other physical activities. Academically, there has been a focus on literacy. “We had education students from Millersville University doing one-on-one literacy intervention, and the students loved that,” shared Divet. While the program has emphasized literacy, Divet noted that providing an all-inclusive Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) component has been a goal of the program. The E is working with the North Museum in a partnership to provide a STEM program to the students. Funds raised at the St. Patrick’s Day Big Band Celebration will help cover the costs of that program. Divet also hopes to raise the funds necessary to potentially hold a two-week summer program. Although the program would probably focus on literacy, a number of other activities could be included, such as yoga, team-building exercises, nutritional education, and more. Tickets for the dance may be obtained by searching “St. Patrick’s Day Big Band Celebration,” on Eventbrite. Tickets may also be purchased in person at The E.
