award was given in the GameChanging Relationships category based on a number of examples of ways GOTR of LancasterLebanon has built partnerships with community members and organizations. Among these are a two-year program involving nine Elizabethtown College students who have completed a service project with the program, and the production of the GOTR documentary “Run With Your Heart,” which was created in 2018. The program also worked with a local author on a book that is used to supplement the organization’s curriculum and has partnered with Penn Medicine/LG Health to showcase the GOTR participants in various presentations. The curriculum and training session culminates in the GOTR spring 5K, when the participants complete a local course with a buddy. This year’s run will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, at Sponaugle-Williamson
Field, Franklin & Marshall College, 415 Harrisburg Ave., Lancaster. “We encourage the community to join us,” said Johnson of the run, which is open to the public and offers a fairly flat course in Lancaster city. The run will start on College Avenue and turn left on West James Street and then right on North Water Street. Runners will then turn right on West Lemon Street, which becomes Buchanan Avenue. Participants will proceed right onto State Street and go right again on West James Street. The course will turn left on Race Avenue before taking a left on West Clay Street. Runners will then turn left on State Street and left again on West Frederick Street before returning to the Franklin & Marshall campus and ending on the school track. Funds raised by the event support scholarships for girls who need financial assistance to participate in the GOTR program. More than 6,000 girls have
received this assistance from the Lancaster-Lebanon program. The atmosphere prior to a GOTR 5K is always unique because it includes pre-race primping for the girls, but this year, Johnson said that runners will see evidence of the 10-year celebration on T-shirts and through activities. The organization will also hold an Evening of Gratitude event on Friday, March 22, to celebrate those individuals who have contributed to the program’s success. “We just want to say thank you for making this possible,” said Johnson. Community members who wish to take part in the run may register at www.gotrlancaster.org. T-shirts will be available to those who register by Tuesday, April 23. Online registration will close on Thursday, May 16. On-site registration will be available on Friday, May 17, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Franklin & Marshall College and on the day of the event from 7 to 8:30 a.m.

Spotted Lanternfly Permit Training Set Lancaster County, along with 12 other southeastern Pennsylvania counties, is currently under quarantine for the spotted lanternfly. All residents and businesses must comply with the regulations, and a spotted lanternfly permit is required for any business working within and/or moving goods in and out of the quarantine zone. Each affected business needs to have a supervisor, a manager, or the owner complete the required training and take a 20-question exam. Free online training, including the examination, can be found at https://extension.psu.edu/ spotted-lanternfly-permit -training. A series of free training and testing sessions is being offered in Lancaster County for businesses that do not have access to the online training. stories his father told him that included mermaids and other fantastic elements. As an adult, Will feels the tales told by his oftenabsent father were simply myths. He has even stopped believing the story of how his father proposed to his mother, Sandra, played by Claire Wolfe, in a field of daffodils. But, as Edward begins to lose his battle with cancer, Will decides to visit, and with encouragement from his wife, Josephine, played by Aria Yang, Will sets off to learn the truth. “Will’s wife, Josephine, (tells him), ‘If you understand the stories, you will understand the man,’” said Wagner, who added that the

Saturday, March 28 through 30, as well as at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 31. Wagner noted that students will sell daffodils during performance breaks to help raise funds for the American Cancer Society. “During the show, there is one moment when (audience members will have a chance to) hold up the daffodils they purchased and be a part of the show,” explained Wagner. The play focuses on Will Bloom, played by Kameron Garcia, who is struggling with his relationship with his father, Edward, a former traveling salesman, played by Tony Dominguez. As Will prepares to become a father, he reflects on his own childhood and the extravagant

audience will see the stories come to life before their eyes in a tale that employs both comedy and drama. The musical will have the 35member cast singing and dancing in styles that range from classic Broadway to country and folk for the story, which is set in Alabama and requires some characters to put on Southern accents. “The score is beautiful,” said Wagner. “There are ballads that bring the emotions of the characters out.” Wagner cited “The River Between Us,” which is sung by Edward and Will about their broken relationship, and “I Don’t Need a Roof,” which is sung by Sandra to Edward. As Sandra, Wolfe will age from age 18 into middle age. “I like playing the young version of Sandra. She is very bubbly and friendly,” noted Wolfe, who added that the more mature Sandra is a woman of extreme calm. “It’s a 180-degree switch,” Wolfe said. As Edward, Dominguez is looking forward to playing the character he called “super explosive.” “(Edward is) really imaginative,” said Dominguez. “It can be hard to embody his character. He’s got a lot of grit, but he knows how to (have
fun).” Dominguez likes how the character uses his stories and personality to influence and inspire others. “I really enjoy (the song) ‘Fight the Dragons,’” said Dominguez, who added that Edward sings this song to Will. “(In the song, Edward) is saying he will fight the dragons and win the battles, and he hopes that one day his son will fight the dragons with him and carry on to fight them himself,” explained Dominguez. “That song really touches my heart because I lost my father at the age of 6, and this entire musical has helped me connect with (who he was) better.” To help prepare the actors, Wagner scheduled a master class with Broadway performer Ciara Renée for March 16. Renée was a member of the 2013 Broadway cast of “Big Fish.” Readers who would like to purchase tickets to “Big Fish” may email tbrill@lchsyes.org or call 717-509-0310. Pictured on front:

Landisville Pool from pg 1 Moonlight swims take place on the second Friday of every month. To celebrate Independence Day, special games are held on the lawn and in the water, and burgers, hot dogs, and watermelon are available. Santa and Mrs. Claus visit during Christmas in July, which also features cookie decorating and Christmas music. A campfire night is held in August. Secretary Amy Roth listed basketball, volleyball, and ample shade as among her favorite amenities at the pool. Neff related that one particular tree on the grounds has become a popular landmark for seniors, who gather in its shade to relax, chat, and interact with each other and with younger pool members. “They’ve had such a positive impact (on the pool community),” Neff said. “It’s a very caring, nurturing place. We’ve had a few older members who cannot come anymore, and they’re missed. People still look for them. It’s such a nice atmosphere for everyone.” “The pool is not just for families,” board member Bob Roth concurred. “It’s a great place for old guys like me to sit and read, then nod off.” Nonmembers are welcome to join the Dolphins swim team and to learn to swim. Beginning on Monday, April 1, those on the waitlist will be offered the chance to buy memberships. Those who do so by Monday, April 15, will pay a discounted rate. Memberships will be sold until capacity is reached, which has been set at 525 family memberships. “(The waitlist) is filling up fast,” observed vice president Mark Fitzgerald. There are many things to like about the Landisville Pool, the board members said. The swimming pool is supplemented by a toddler-friendly feature pool. A lifeguard trainer is on staff to help ensure everyone’s safety. The pavilions may be rented by members for special occasions. Lounge chairs are provided, and a snack bar is on-site. The pool association is financially stable, and as a private club, there is no cost to local taxpayers. Additionally, ice cream is served on “Sundae Mondays,” and burger night is held on Wednesdays, with board members taking turns manning the grill. Rafts may be used in the pool at set times on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Fissella Grabs State Swim Medal by Ara Grigorian
Andre Fissella’s time of 57.37 seconds earned him eighth place in the 100-yard breaststroke preliminaries on Saturday at Bucknell University’s Kinney Natatorium as the senior swimmer represented Hempfield at the PIAA Class 3A state championship meet. With that time, Fissella shaved some time off his seeding time of 57.54 and qualified for the finals. In the finals, Fissella earned eight place with a time of 57.85.
“Breaststroke has always been a strong event for him,” said head coach Brittany Bertoli. “Every year the state competition gets faster and faster. Even though he didn’t make states last year, Andre had such drive and determination to make it this year.” The state championships began on Friday where the Hempfield standout competed in the 200 individual medley, again lowering his time from that of his qualifying 1:55.71. Fissella registered a 1:55.56 but finished 21st in a very competitive PIAA field, thus not qualifying for the finals.
“He had his best time in the 200 individual medley by two-tenths of a second,” Bertoli pointed out. The coach also commented on how a friendly rivalry between Fissella and Logan Smith from a LancasterLebanon League rival school helped motivate the Hempfield swimmer for the breaststroke event. “Leading up to the state meet, he has had a friendly rivalry with Logan Smith, who touched slightly in front of Andre in the league championship meet and in districts,” Bertoli explained. “Having that rivalry, I
think, made him swim better this year. In the end, his event time ended up being better. He touched slightly ahead of Logan in the state finals.” Smith finished 10th at 57.27 in the 100 breaststroke finals. The fact that many swimmers in the L-L League swim together at the club level in the off-season, district and state meets see the breaking down of barriers to some degree; in fact, there is a certain level of camaraderie. “You see them supporting one another because of that,” Bertoli said,
School Launches Math Club Resurrection Catholic School recently formed a no-cost math club for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Instructional support teacher Jenny Shmidheiser said the club, called Crazy 8s, is over capacity with 41 students. Two separate age groups, for children in grades three to five and for children in kindergarten through grade two, use the same basic activities, but with more
challenging math for the older level. The club offers diverse materials to handle a wide range of abilities even among children in the same grade. A recent geometry lesson began with placing glow sticks on the gym floor to make straightsided shapes, including triangles, rectangles, squares, and hexagons. After some crawling, laughing, and glow stick placing,
older students together created one large pattern of repeating squares that glowed in the dark. Then they changed the pattern to create repeating triangles. On the gym stage, younger students did much the same but with less use of math terminology and concepts. Students were able to take home the glow sticks, along with
the dice used in a Bouncy Dice Explosion lesson on probability. Upcoming lessons were slated to include Let’s Get Loud and Toilet Paper Olympics. For the lessons, students were slated to run, jump, throw objects, and roll around on the floor as they absorbed the principles of math.

Students in the Crazy 8s group for grades three through five created a pattern of triangles using glow sticks during a geometry lesson at a club meeting in January.

Empower Hope has announced that Kellyne Njonge, one of the organization’s photographers, has been recognized as the recipient of the People’s Choice Award for a photo submitted to the Consultative Group to Assist the Poorest (CGAP) 2018 Photo Contest. Applicants were asked to show how financial services expand opportunities for people living in poverty in Africa and how these services enable people to build sustainable livelihoods. More than 600 entries were judged on technical excellence, composition, overall impact, and artistic merit. Njonge’s photo, titled “Seeing Our World Through the Lens of Hope,” shows a group of young boys looking through Njonge’s camera. Empower Hope exists to provide support to vulnerable children in slums and poverty-stricken areas of Kenya. Most of these children live with a single parent, with a grandparent or in an orphanage. Through its Generational
Mentorship Model, Empower Hope trains, disciples and mentors indigenous young adults to come alongside children in their communities, to support, mentor and nurture them with the goal of giving them hope and purpose. The children are trained and guided to become mentors so that the model is perpetuated, and participants continue to receive mentorship through adulthood. Children are continually being added to the programs that Empower Hope offers. Donations provide long-term focus and have given most participants the ability to attend school, including primary and secondary schooling, and receive a university education. With a focus on sustainability, Empower Hope also is establishing an entrepreneurial business model in Kenya, creating jobs and equipping new and existing businesses with tools to transform lives and revitalize communities.
