Cub Scouts slate pinewood derby

Members of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) are known across the nation for many things; Boy Scouts are easily recognized by their iconic uniforms, and most Americans have been visited by members of a local troop as they sell popcorn from door to door. Perhaps the most famous Boy Scout tradition of all is the pinewood derby, which gives young Scouts an opportunity to design and race their own wooden miniature racecars.

BSA Cub Scout Pack 37 will hold its annual pinewood derby at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 23, at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 85 E. Brandt Blvd., Landisville. During the event, members of Pack 37 will compete in races against one another with custom-made wooden cars, and refreshments such as hot dogs and popcorn will be available to purchase. The

young Scouts will also have a photo opportunity with a backdrop that has been custom-made by parent volunteers, which will include stoplights and a tire from a NASCAR vehicle.

Every year, participants receive their kits to build a derby car two months prior to the race. Each car must meet specific requirements such as maximum weight limits, and parent volunteers bring tools to a meeting to help the kids craft the body of the vehicle from a block of wood. The Scouts then take their racecars home to attach weights, sand the wood and paint a design.

“Personally, the pinewood derby is my favorite event other than our camping trips,” said Eric Kelshaw, treasurer of Pack 37. “It’s a lot of fun for the kids to do. We also have races for siblings and adult family members of Scouts, but they can’t win anything besides bragging rights.”

Each participant will vote on their favorite vehicle to determine

the top three cars in the design category; the top three cars in the speed category will comprise racers with the fastest finishing times. The six top racers will compete against finalists from other Packs in the area at the Susquehanna District Pinewood Derby on Saturday, April 13. Pack 37 will host the event at the Hempfield Fire Department, 19 Main St., Landisville. Both pinewood derbies are open to the public.

In addition to the annual pinewood derby, Pack 37 offers a different activity for its members every spring, such as a visit to the Battleship New Jersey in 2022. The Cub Scouts also take various camping trips and participate in summer programs throughout the year, which are made possible by selling popcorn and other food items in local neighborhoods and during the pinewood derbies.

Thirty-four student artists have been chosen to represent Hempfield School District in the Lancaster County Young Artists exhibit at the Lancaster Museum of Art, 135 N. Lime St., Lancaster. The exhibit opened on March 9, and it features the work of students from middle schools and high schools throughout the county. The selected pieces will remain on display at the museum until Sunday, April 7.

Every year, students between seventh and 12th grades are invited to submit work in the Lancaster County Young Artists exhibit, which is open to kids who are enrolled in a local district as well as homeschooled youths. The regional competition includes categories for apparel, ceramics and glass, digital art, drawing, painting, photography, sculpture and many other mediums.

“(Lancaster County Young Artists) is set up to recognize excellent student artwork in the county, so each school district is given a set number of entries to submit,” said Amy Edwards, an art teacher at Hempfield High School. “They look for work that

The ninth annual Lancaster County Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) MobilePack event will be held on Friday through Sunday, April 5 through 7, at Willow Street Mennonite Church, 399 E. Penn Grant Road. During designated shifts on each day of the event, members of the community will gather to pack thousands of meals to help

combat food insecurity around the globe.

Children from kindergarten to 12th grade and adult volunteers may sign up for a specific twohour shift to pack food items. Packing shifts vary on each day, and student-to-adult ratios have been assigned to groups of volunteers to ensure the safety and efficiency of the event. Tasks that may be completed sitting down will be available as needed.

Individuals who register for a shift are encouraged to make a minimum financial donation to FMSC. Each minimum donation will cover the cost of more than 200 meals, which is the average amount of food one volunteer packs during a shift. In addition to the financial donation, FMSC invites participants to bring a nonperishable food item on the day of their chosen shift. Requested food donations include peanut butter, rice, pasta and low-sugar breakfast cereal, and FMSC will distribute all donations to the Lancaster County Food Hub in Lancaster city.

Lancaster County FMSC MobilePack chairperson Lora Magnus Wenger first learned about the organization during a mission trip she took to Haiti in 2013. Wenger was volunteering with nonprofit organization Mission of Hope, which partnered with Haitian orphanages, schools and nonprofits to distribute FMSC meals to roughly 50,000 children per day. Upon returning to the United States, Wenger said she was inspired to research the organization, and she signed up for an FMSC MobilePack event in New Jersey. “I was very impressed by the organization and its goals and methods,” Wenger added. “I decided that our community could do this too; I came back and talked to my church about it, and we hosted our first event the following year.”

Since the first MobilePack event at Willow Street Mennonite Church, volunteers have packed and paid for more than 2 million meals for communities around the globe.

During the event, volunteers will pack boxes of food that will be distributed to communities around the globe.

Although the goal of the event has remained the same more than a decade later, certain changes have been made over the years. Due to inflation, the cost of each meal has slightly increased, and hand-washing stations have been made available during shifts in recent years to meet government safety regulations. A few years ago, FMSC began accepting donations for the Lancaster County Food Hub to battle food insecurity in the local community in addition to efforts in other countries.

“Living in the United States, we are incredibly blessed,” Wenger said. “I think it is important for us to not only recognize how blessed we are but to be willing to share our blessings with others. It is also a good opportunity for young people down to age 5 to be involved in sharing and caring for others.”

judged, artists who have been chosen for the exhibit are contacted directly to drop off their work. Edwards, who teaches Fine Metals, Hot Glass and World Crafts at Hempfield High School, presents the opportunity to individual students whose work she believes would do well in the competition. “I think there are so few opportunities for high school students to showcase their work outside of their building and district,” Edwards said. “To be in the Lancaster Museum of Art is pretty special.”

Edwards noted that while it’s exciting to be featured in the exhibit, students whose work was not accepted should not be discouraged. Before she was a teacher, Edwards competed in the contest as a student until she graduated from Pequea Valley High School in 1991. “I always share with the kids that the process is only one set of eyes; it’s not the end-all, be-all,” Edwards said. “I talk about my experiences with my own work not being accepted at times. It’s a wonderful contest, but it’s not the only thing.”

Church sets Easter events

Lancaster Church of the Brethren (COB), 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster, invites the public to participate in its two upcoming Easter events.

A love feast and Communion service will take place on Maundy Thursday, March 28, at 6:30 p.m. in the Family Life Center. The service will use projected translations and some verbal interpretation so that both English and Spanish speakers can participate.

Patterned after Jesus’ Last Supper with his disciples, the love feast will include feetwashing, symbolizing cleansing and service;

a simple meal, pointing to Christian fellowship and a future heavenly banquet; and Communion, commemorating salvation through Christ’s crucifixion.

Pastors and lay leaders will offer reflections and guide the congregation through the service. The love feast will include congregational singing and offer handwashing as an alternative to feetwashing. Men and women will be seated separately, with feetwashing taking place around tables.

Following the meal, Linda Byers, director of children’s ministries, will take the children aside for an age-appropriate love feast activity. All are invited to participate in the service.

Seatings at 11am, 12pm, and 1pm

Mixed field green salad, assorted dinner rolls

Local favorite Groff’s smoked ham with a peach apple compote, rosemary and parmesan encrusted leg of lamb with natural au jus and mint jelly, lemon sole oreganta

For more information, contact Pastor Don Fitzkee at PastorDonF@ lancob.org.

Lancaster COB will also host “Easter Quest: More Than the Usual Egg Hunt” on Saturday, March 30. Families may drop in anytime between 9 and 10:30 a.m.

Instead of plastic eggs filled with candy spread all over the lawn with children racing to get their fill, the grounds around the church will have 18 egg stations to lead participants through an interactive event.

Each stop will have a simple activity to do or a question to answer and a lesson to learn. Participants will receive a checklist to check off the matching eggs they have located. The stops are not in any special order and families can move at their own pace. Once the children have completed their egg list, they will receive a reward.

In the event of rain, the church will offer a modified indoor option. Those with questions may contact Byers at lindab@lancob.org.

Wayside to observe Holy Week, Easter

Wayside Presbyterian Church, 600 Stony Battery Road, Landisville, has slated Holy Week and Easter activities.

On Maundy Thursday, March 28, the church will host a 7 p.m. contemplative service including a choir anthem, Communion, and the stripping of the church in silence. The word maundy is derived from the Latin word for “command,” referring to Jesus’

commandment to the disciples to “Love one another as I have loved you.”

Three Easter Communion services will be held on Sunday, March 31: a sunrise gathering at 6:30 a.m. in the church pavilion or indoors in the event of inclement weather, a 9 a.m. traditional service featuring congregational singing and a choir anthem, and a 10:30 a.m. contemporary

Introducing girls to engineering

Speaking to an auditorium full of high-school girls, Dr. Sara Atwood recalled a story about the early days of seatbelts.

The male engineers designing the device, noted the Dean of the School of Engineering and Computer Science at Elizabethtown College, neglected to consider the needs of pregnant women when making the safest seatbelts possible.

“We care about having every perspective in the room,” Atwood told the girls. That’s the motivation behind Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day on the campus. The second annual event was held in late February, drawing girls from 10 area high schools, including Penn Manor, Elizabethtown, Warwick, Columbia, Garden Spot, Hempfield and Conestoga Valley.

“As a girl in engineering myself, I’m especially proud of this effort by E-town’s new Society of Women Engineers Student Section to ‚ÄòEducate for Service,” which is our motto here at Elizabethtown College,” Atwood said. Last year, organizers planned on hosting about 30 girls, and the seats filled up immediately, so they expanded the program this year.

“It’s exciting to see the tremendous growth in just our second annual offering of this event,” Atwood shared, noting that about 100 girls were in attendance. They rotated through four workshops, including making mechanical inchworms, “Pac-Man Coding” and creating water filtration systems.

“My favorite class in high school was English,” Atwood told the assembly at the program’s start. “There are a lot of ways to be an engineer and a lot of different paths to get there. You can love to write and be an engineer. Calculus does not have to be your favorite class for you to be an engineer. You have to be able to do the math, but you don’t have to love it. Don’t think about what you want to be. Think about what you love to do.”

For Columbia High School students Mar Mendoza and Sophia Garza, the program appealed because both wanted to learn about new topics and potential careers.

“Engineering seems so fun, and it’s something I’ve thought about going into,” shared Mar, a freshman. “I think this program will show me more opportunities of what I might do for a career in engineering.”

Sophia agreed, adding that she was particularly interested in coding. “When you have an opportunity like today, you should take it,” said the ninth-grader. “It’s a good opportunity to learn more about STEM careers and develop a background in that in case I want to do something like that in the future.”

Atwood emphasized that the day was designed to introduce the girls to engineering through hands-on projects and interaction with engineering faculty and students. Ultimately, she hopes events like Introduce a Girl to Engineering will close the industry’s gender gap.

According to a DiscoverE and Global Strategy Group research study, only 11% of female high school students are interested in the engineering field, compared to 24% of males. The Elizabethtown College event was part of a nationwide campaign to increase the number of women in engineering fields. It was funded in part through a Lancaster County STEM Alliance diversity, equity and inclusion grant.

“I didn’t know any engineers when I was in high school and wasn’t sure about it as a career path, but I went into college and found that I loved it,” Atwood stated. “I hope that we can inspire these young women in the same way.”
