School district wraps up food drive

OnMarch 2, volunteers comprising students, families and teachers concluded the 13th annual Hempfield School District food drive. The volunteers collected boxes of goods totaling more than 6,000 pounds of food from multiple schools and administration buildings, and the food was then delivered to the Hempfield Area Food Pantry. As the needs of the community have grown over the years, so has the commitment of local residents to meet them.

Throughout the month of February, each school and participating faculty building gathered donations from staff members, students and families. Several classes of students organized competitions to see which group could collect the most donations, and teachers implemented incentives for those who participated. The food drive also enlisted the help of local businesses such as JK Mechanical, which has served as the event’s primary sponsor for the last decade and offers its staff members and trucks to collect the donations each year.

The food drive began when Market Street Sports Group, a local advertising agency, was approached by one of its clients, which wished

to organize an event at Rohrerstown Elementary School. The food drive grew each year, eventually encompassing every school in the district. While JK Mechanical participates in the drive by assisting with collection, Market Street Sports Group operates behind the scenes to grease the wheels of the event and serves as a conduit between the school district and the business community.

“When the drive first began years ago, we never expected to be collecting over 6,000 pounds in one day.”

“W hen the drive first began years ago, we never expected to be collecting over 6,000 pounds in one day,” said Jason Jesberger, president of marketing at Market Street Sports Group. “I find it really special. Everyone gives, and I think it’s going to continue to grow.”

W hen the food drive began, it was held in the fall around Thanksgiving. Due to the amount of donations that Hempfield Area Food Pantry receives during the holidays, it requested that the date of the drive be moved to the spring, when it receives the

fewest donations. The organizers of the drive elected to move it to February so that it would still occur during the school year and receive help from students. The change in date has benefited the f ood pantry greatly; this year, it received over 1,400 pounds of f ood more than last year from the drive.

The Hempfield Area Food Pantry is operated by several churches, businesses and other organizations in the area. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, it served as a choice pantry, meaning that families would select their own items from the shelves after providing a form of identification. During the pandemic, the food pantry decided to stock fresh vegetables and other items, and now it prepares a box for each family to pick up at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Landisville. The food pantry feeds over 375 people each week and handled over 277,000 pounds of food last year.

“There’s definitely a need in the community,” said David Bleil, a volunteer at Hempfield Area Food Pantry. “We are so thankful that the district does (the food drive) and that the kids recognize this need and help out.”

Hempfield High School senior Jonah Gelbart was selected to perf orm in the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) allstate jazz band at its upcoming conference and festival. Gelbart is one of five trumpet players from across the state who qualified and will perform in a PMEA concert at Pocono Mountain West High School, 181 Panther Lane, Pocono Summit, on Friday, April 21.

Michael P. McMahon was a true Renaissance man. A 1993 graduate of Lancaster Catholic High School, he was a registered nurse, a flight attendant and a school bus driver. Each job offered Michael a chance to help people, something he truly believed in. Although he gave his all to everything he did, he was most passionate about his work as an emergency medical technician (EMT). When Michael passed away from colon cancer in October 2021, his family turned its grief into an opportunity to help others. The Michael P. McMahon

Gelbart submitted a video audition f or the ensemble in January and received his results the following month. Soon after, he received the music for the show and began to learn the material. Prior to the concert, he will travel to Kalahari Resorts and Conventions in the Poconos to meet the rest of the ensemble and practice for the performance. “I’m excited to meet other musicians from across the state,” Gelbart said. “It’s a great opportunity to meet some really talented people.”

Scholarship for Emergency Medical Services (EMS) was created to help any resident of Lancaster County who wishes to pursue an EMT, Advanced EMT or Paramedic Certification.

Michael was the oldest of four children and the son of Mike and Joanne McMahon. “He was loving, and he was loved by his family and friends,” Mike stated.

Added Joanne, “Michael’s life was so varied. You couldn’t put him in a box. If he was interested in something, he’d do it. … They say it’s the dash between the years on your gravestone that matters. Michael made the most of that dash.”

Joanne noted that her freespirited son loved to try new things, but one career path made all the difference. “Being an EMT and eventually a paramedic changed his life,” she shared. “He grew as a person. It made him who he was.”

When Joanne sat down to write Michael’s obituary, and she got to the part about giving flowers, she had another idea. “She said, ‘Let’s start a scholarship in his name,’” recalled Mike, noting that they asked family members and friends to contribute.

“Our goal is to find as many people to help as we can,” said Joe McMahon, Michael’s brother. “We want to pay for as many as we can and give people the opportunity to do this as a career, to help people to do something every day that they can be proud of.”

Noted Mike, “This is a full scholarship, based on capability and need.” It will cover tuition up to $7,500.

To help develop the scholarship, the McMahon family reached out to the Lancaster County EMS Council, a nonprofit organization made up of representatives from all of the EMS agencies serving Lancaster County. The initial scholarship was open to students and alumni at Lancaster Catholic High School, but a second round is being offered countywide.

The scholarship is open to both current students and adults. “Michael was kind of a late bloomer, so the ideal candidate could be someone who has stayed home with their kids and now wants to get back into the workforce,” said Michael’s sister Mary Kate Walsh. “Or it could be someone who wants to

change careers and needs financial support to do that.”

The scholarship is meant to be a stepping stone into a career that helps people, said Michael’s sister Colleen Murphy, who added, “We need more helpers in the world like my brother.”

The application process

for the scholarship will run from Saturday, April 1, through Friday, June 30. Scholarship winners will be notified by Monday, July 31. For more information, to obtain a scholarship application or to make a donation to the scholarship fund, contact Joe McMahon at joe@joemcmahonlaw.com.

“Shrek The Musical” celebrates our differences

“This show is about acceptance,” said Landon Hunsicker, describing “Shrek The Musical.” “Shrek is an ogre, and everyone assumes he’s mean, but the show gives him the opportunity to show what’s inside him and help him connect with the other characters.”

“Shrek The Musical” will be performed by Encore! Home School Productions at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 31, and Saturday, April 1, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 2. It will be performed at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim.

“The cast has worked really hard on this show,” noted Landon, who portrays Donkey. “We started rehearsing in November. It’s a really

fun show, and it’s different than the movie version of ‘Shrek.’ It adds to that original story.”

“Shrek The Musical” tells

story of the title character, Shrek, portrayed by Seth Snyder, who becomes an unlikely hero as he takes a

Mack takes 6th in states; Basketball falls to S-F

Hempfield junior Seamus

Mack earned a spot in the semifinals of the PIAA Class 3A Wrestling Championships at the Giant Center in Hershey on Friday, March 10. Reaching the semifinals assured him a spot on the podium. Mack settled for sixth place. Having already registered a fall in the first period of his first match - one in which he pinned Cathedral Prep senior Sammy Staab in 1:07 - Mack faced Michael Turi of West Scranton. He needed only 30 seconds to pin the freshman, earning his ticket to Saturday’s semis.

Andrew Binni of CanonMcMillan came into the state tournament with 42 wins under his belt. In the Saturday morning match with Mack, Binni came out on top

6-4 in a classic battle.

“He has wrestled Binni before,” said Knights’ coach Shane Mack. “He wrestled him well and kept himself in the match.

“They were on the edge,” continued the coach. “Seamus had a chance to score near the end of the match to tie it up. But they ended up out of bounds.”

An even closer and heartbreaking decision by a 5-4 margin cost Mack a chance to earn third place in the consolation brackets. He fell to Eren Sement of Council Rock North, which set up a battle with Hayden Cunningham of State College for the fifthplace match.

“He got taken down in the last few seconds,” Mack explained about the match with Sement. “We were ahead 3-2 and relaxed, I think. The

kid got a takedown in the last four or five seconds of the match. Lesson learned.”

Cunningham, having lost to Tahir Parkins of Nazareth in the consolation semis, outlasted Mack in a 7-4 decision to take fifth place..

“Cunningham is strong and hard to score on,” Mack said.

As for the progression of Mack’s high school wrestling career, he was a state qualifier as a sophomore and placed eighth.

“He made it to the podium as a sophomore where he was at 126,” said the coach. “The weight classes changed this year, so he was 127. He moved up two spaces on the podium.

“Obviously he was happy to make it to states and to the podium,” Mack continued. “Each time you achieve something, your expectations become greater.”

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Hempfield head basketball coach Danny Walck spoke of his team’s tenacity on Saturday, March 11. The Black Knights overcame a first half in which visiting Emmaus was leading by as much as seven points.

“It wasn’t going down,” Walck said of the basketball targeted at the Emmaus bucket. “I thought we survived that and got to halftime. I liked our resilience.”

By halftime of the PIAA Class 6A opening round playoff game, the Black Knights had trimmed the deficit to 25-24. While the Hornets swarmed the basket and continued to dominate the offensive boards in the first half, Hempfield kept

pace, largely thanks to Kamyn Lawrence, who scored 13 of his total 17 points in the first half.

The Knights came back and held off Emmaus in the final minutes to post a 62-59 victory.

“I think my teammates were looking for me and they found me,” Lawrence said. “We executed plays.

“Their defense was pretty intense,” Lawrence added. “We just had to fight through it.”

Miguel Pena, the Knights’ leading scorer, was held to one basket in the first half - a threepointer later in the second quarter. He hit two more treys in the second half and made some key foul shots down the stretch, finishing with a teamleading 18 points.

“I started very slow,” Pena admitted. “The team picked me up.

“When he got hurt, I picked up where he left off,” Pena added, referring to Lawrence, who left the game with an ankle injury.

“They played man-to-man defense, but they switched it up a little bit,” Walck explained. “They had a few zone possessions there. We knew that coming in they’re a team that switches defenses and we had to adjust.”

Hempfield (24-3) outscored Emmaus 16-9 in the third quarter. In fact, the Knights came on with a 16-5 run after the Hornets scored the first two baskets of the third quarter. The second of those baskets was Jake Fotta’s layup on the third offensive rebound of the Hornets’ attack.

“They’re a great rebounding team,” Walck said. “That’s one of their strengths. Their second-chance points were huge. They were rebounding the ball extremely well. They finish well around the rim.”

Starting the fourth stanza with treys by Pena and Ben Troyer (6 pts) followed by baskets from Pena and Chase Calabretta (6 pts), the Knights built a 50-39 lead at the 5:50 mark of the period.

The Hornets turned the momentum with their 14-2 run, spearheaded by a pair of three-point plays - hoop and harm variety - courtesy of Dylan Darville (10 pts) and Jametric Harris, who led all scorers with 23 points.

When Will Barber (17 points) scored with only 1:15 left to play, the Hornets grabbed a 55-54 lead. From that point on, foul shots by Michael Rieker, Pena and junior guard Nick Deeg clinched it for Hempfield.

Walck expressed his pleasure over how everyone did their part in this victory.

“Those guys who came off the bench knew their role,” said the coach. “They stayed engaged and gave us great minutes.”

Asked about the Hornets’ defense not showing Pena any open shots in the first half, Walck emphasized the team aspect. “He’s an excellent player but the other guys are also good players. They know their roleexecute and do your part. We need everyone to fulfill their

roles.”

“It’s now how you start; it’s how you finish,” Pena said. “And we finished the game strong.”

“It’s a state playoff game, so the margin of error is very slim,” said Walck. “We need to take care of possessions, rebound better and make foul shots.”

The Knights’ stellar season came to a heartbreaking finish on Wednesday evening at the Geigle Complex in Reading. Having shots go in was a brutal ordeal on the Ides of March as both the Knights and the Spring-Ford Rams headed to the locker rooms at halftime of a two-point game - Rams 16, Knights 14.

Spring-Ford outscored Hempfield by a mere two points in the second half to win the second-round PIAA playoff game 43-39, ending the Knights’ season at 24-4.

Lawrence and Pena led Hempfield in scoring with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Pena made a pair of treys on the night. Hester also made a three-point bucket and finished with seven points.

EJ Campbell of Spring-Ford led all scorers with 15 points. The Rams (27-3) entered the PIAA’s as the second seed out of a tough District One.

The S-F and Hempfield game was the nightcap of a doubleheader at the Geigle Complex. District Eleven champ Parkland defeated the Garnet Valley Jaguars, the seventh seed from Dist. One, 74-58.

Gelbart joined the jazz band at Hempfield High School during his freshman year, and he has been playing the trumpet since he was in fourth grade. He noted that one of his favorite aspects of the trumpet is its versatility; the trumpet can be found in classical, orchestral and jazz compositions. Although Gelbart also plays the piano, he added that playing the trumpet presents unique challenges. “It has very severe limitations compared to the piano or even the saxophone,” said Gelbart. “Older instruments like trumpet have technical limitations that you have to work through. It has a unique character to it, and you have a lot of pride after overcoming those obstacles.”

In addition to the PMEA concert in the Poconos, Gelbart also auditioned for the district jazz festival and will perform at Boiling Springs High School on Saturday, April 1. He said that he is always looking for an opportunity to perform, either on his own or as a part of a larger

ensemble. As a member of Hempfield’s jazz band, Gelbart has been able to hone his skills by playing with other jazz bands and receiving feedback from judges at competitions. “We have such a good music program. Receiving judge commentary and competing with other bands is something that bands at other levels don’t do,” Gelbart said.

Gelbart initially picked up the trumpet due to his school band’s not having enough trumpet players and he began listening to jazz music as homework. Since then, jazz has become his favorite genre of music to listen to in his free time. Gelbart’s favorite artist at the moment is Peter Evans, an avant-garde trumpet player.

After graduating from high school, Gelbart plans to attend West Chester University. Although he does not plan to study music in college, he said that he hopes to continue performing in other jazz groups during his college career.

journey to rescue the feisty Princess Fiona, played by Emily Norcott as an adult, Grace Richey as a teen and Cambria Brinton as a young child. Full of fairy-tale characters, the show is a familyfriendly story of friendship, love, community and uniqueness. As Pinocchio, played by Giselle Bartlett, says in the show, “What makes us special makes us strong.”

The production will feature a cast of 40 students from across the central Pennsylvania region. Students live in the school districts of Hempfield, Elizabethtown Area, Penn Manor, Donegal, Lancaster,

Susquenita, Bermudian Springs, Camp Hill, Annville-Cleona, Central Dauphin, Lower Dauphin, Cumberland Valley, West Shore, Derry Township, East Pennsboro, Susquehanna Township and Middletown Area.

“Community is a big theme of this show,” said Callaghan Petrosky, who plays Lord Farquaad. “It’s about being comfortable with who you are and having a place in a bigger community.”

The large cast of actors don elaborate costumes, including fur suits and prosthetics, and for some of the actors, it’s been a unique

challenge. “I wear a fur suit and I have hooves on my hands, so I’ve been practicing with them,” Landon stated. For Callaghan, his character is extremely short, requiring him to act on his knees. “I wear a long cape and have knee pads, and then I have fake legs attached to the pads,” he said. Gingy, played by Ella McKell, works with a puppet throughout the show, and Dragon, portrayed by Lily Patota, wears a large headpiece and maneuvers the stage with a giant tail.

Costumes, props, sets, playbills, advertising, concessions and more are coordinated by families, who contribute their time and talents to the production, said Tammy Bartlett, public relations lead. “It takes a community to produce a show,” she stated.

Encore! Home School Productions is a nonprofit organization that offers performing arts opportunities to homeschool and cyber school students in central Pennsylvania. A Christian organization, it focuses on providing students with a positive, challenging and educational experience, presenting high-quality live theater to the public. “Shrek The Musical” is directed by Dena McKell, with Coleen Steindel as the music director. The show is produced by Ann Snyder.

To purchase tickets for “Shrek The Musical,” visit www.encorehsp.org or call 717-459-3701. Online sales will close three hours before show time. Tickets will be available at the door.

Dayspring to present “Willy Wonka”

Dayspring Christian Academy’s middle and high school students will bring Roald Dahl’s “Willy Wonka” to the stage. Shows will be presented on Friday, March 24, at 7 p.m.; Saturday, March 25, at 2 and 7 p.m.; and Sunday, March 26, at 2 p.m. The school is located at 120 College Ave., Mountville.

“Willy Wonka” tells the story of Charlie Bucket, one of five children who find themselves in possession of golden tickets that enable them to visit Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory and meet the eccentric Wonka. Along with his grandfather, Charlie must navigate Wonka’s rules inside the factory or find himself in trouble.

The play features senior Jackson Stone as Wonka and sixthgrader Jimmy Fannin as Charlie Bucket. Other actors include

Liam Guion as Augustus Gloop, Arctura Diffenderfer as Veruca Salt, Aaron Collier as Mike Teavee, and Grace Stoltzfus as Violet Beauregarde. Fellow students play the Oompa-Loompas. The show is directed by Ric Weaver with Dayspring senior Jude Prestidge as assistant director.

Sally Armstrong, Dayspring drama coordinator, said “Willy Wonka” was chosen because the show teaches children what kind of character traits to avoid and contains lessons for people of all ages.

This is the second year that the school will offer preferred seating for the shows. Preferred seating tickets are available on a limited basis at all shows. Additionally, the matinee showing on March 25 at 2 p.m. is paywhat-you-will. For all other shows, separate general admis-
