Art, music, and reading will share the spotlight on a special evening.
Landisville Middle School (LMS), 340 Mumma Drive, will host Night of the Arts on Thursday, April 10, from 6 to 8:30 p.m.
This year, organizers extended the hours of the annual event.
“We wanted to have a longer time period so the kids who are in sports or have other obligations can attend,” LMS art teacher Amy Smith said. “We wanted to make it easier for families.”
Night of the Arts will feature artwork made by LMS seventhand eighth-graders. “Part of the
whole artistic process has to do with exhibition of their learning and work,” said Smith. “And for them to be proud of what they’ve done and show people. It gives them another outlet. ... I’ve been teaching at Hempfield since 1999, and I’ve seen kids gain confidence through this exhibition, and they are able to be more expressive in the art room.”
Some members of the school’s modern band will perform.
One of the highlights of the evening will be a visit from a special guest, award-winning author Amy Sarig King, who resides in Lititz. King will speak in the LMS gym from 6 to 6:45 p.m.
According to her bio on her
website, King has been called “One of the best Y.A. (Young Adult) writers working today” by the New York Times Book Review and has won the Michael L. Printz Award twice, the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, the Amelia Walden Award, the Carolyn Field Award, the Margaret A. Edwards Award, and the ALAN (Assembly on Literature for Adolescents of National Council of Teachers of English) Award for her lasting contribution to young adult literature.
Every Hempfield middle school student will receive a copy of King’s book “Me and Marvin Gardens” through the One Book, One School initiative, thanks to a

Families can channel their inner archaeologist at a Fossil Safari sponsored by the Lancaster County Fossil and Mineral Club (LCFMC).
The educational event will be held Saturday, April 5, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ, 450 W. Main St., Mountville. There is no fee for admission. Preregistration is required. Children must be accompanied by an adult. For more information or to register, email LCFMC@LancasterCountyFossil AndMineralClub.org.
LCFMC, which was founded by Catherine and Chris Haefner, held its first Fossil Safari on a Thursday night last November and will hold this one on a weekend due to popular demand.
“It was well received,” said Sue Garrett, who is one of the event organizers. “The kids absolutely loved it.”
The Fossil Safari will feature a variety of fossils collected by Sue and her husband, Chuck, from Pennsylvania, South Carolina, North Carolina, Maryland, Wyoming, South Dakota, and Florida, along with educational displays, including a hands-on activity where kids use small shovels to scoop up dirt and gravel and search for shark teeth.

Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church pastor Tim Seitz-Brown will welcome an old friend to town.
Seitz-Brown met the magician James Warren at a Theology and Peace Conference in Baltimore in 2011. “As part of the evening entertainment, James dazzled us with his magic tricks,” SeitzBrown said. “He made us laugh and ask over and over again,
‘How did you do that?’ He made me forget about the snacks table and drew me in with his entertainment.”
On Sunday, April 13, Warren will perform his magic act at Zion Lutheran, which is located at 85 Brandt Blvd., Landisville. The show will run from 4 to 5 p.m., followed by a meal at 5:30. Everyone is invited. The church will provide fried chicken and beverages, and congregants will bring side dishes and desserts.
First Reformed Church, 40 E. Orange St., Lancaster, will present a concert, “Majesty of the Organ,” on First Friday, April 4, at 8 p.m. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m. The 30-minute program will feature organist Ken Krause. The program will include “Trumpet Voluntary”by Henry Huron and “Suite for Organ” by Charles John Stanley. The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, call the church office at 717-397-5149.
grant from the Hempfield Foundation.
“Art and writing are definitely sister processes for sure,” Smith said.
In addition to the art displayed on walls in the middle of LMS, students will make chalk murals to welcome visitors into the school.
The LMS Student Council will hold

a bake sale. Money raised from Night of the Arts will be donated to three organizations: Little Chiques Park, Clark Nature Preserve, and Conestoga River Club.
LMS librarian Erika Rhodeside said seventh-graders share an experience with the main character of “Me and Marvin Gardens”because the students
do a stream study in the spring which directly ties into the novel.
“A Night of the Arts (event) that brings in literature, art, music is a great opportunity for the community to see we can all come together on one central idea,” Rhodeside said. “Amy King centers her work on community. She’s a local author. When you read ‘Me and Marvin Gardens’ or any of her work, you are definitely in Lancaster County. I think it’s super cool a nationally recognized author is writing about our hometown. It builds that idea of community.”
she said. “With this book, it’s extra special because it’s a story about the cornfield that surrounded my house in Berks County where I grew up, and how it went from growing corn to growing more than 250 houses. There are many people, young and not so young, in this area who can relate to that.”
Now thru April 9!
King said, “‘Me and Marvin Gardens’ is always a special book to talk to students about. They are usually very excited by the science, and that excitement leads to great discussions about the realities and of plastic pollution. I visit many schools that use this book in classrooms, and I always learn something new from student projects. Students teach me so much. In the end, pollution is about their future, and it’s always good to talk openly about solutions.”
King relishes the chance to talk to students in her home state. “Because all my books are set in Pennsylvania, it’s always good to talk to fellow kids who are growing up in Pennsylvania,”
Night of the Arts is a joint effort between LMS and Centerville Middle School (CMS). “Centerville Middle School is thrilled that Landisville has invited us to their Night of the Arts featuring author A.S. King,” CMS librarian Amanda Deck said. “Our student volunteers look forward to helping with the community upcycling art project and other planned activities. One Book, One School creates a unique opportunity for us to connect as a school community. … We are excited to read the book throughout April.”
Elementary school students are invited to attend to see where some of them will be going to middle school. “We want to make connections because middle school can be a very challenging time,” said Rhodeside. “It is neat to see how other districts make it a community event, so we wanted to bring that to Hempfield as well.”

Warren’s magic show is part of the Zion Arts Series. “(The mission of the arts series is) to show the community at large that there’s more to Zion than just a church,” series chairman John Marrs said. “We are trying to reach people in a safe way to provide a community where we can all live together peacefully.”
In the past, the church primarily hosted concerts. “We wanted to make it more inclusive,” said Marrs. “We had a comedian last fall, and now we have a magician coming. That’s part of our community outreach.”
Marrs said the show is family friendly. “It is aimed at an adult audience, but children will be entertained,” he said. He added that Zion Lutheran is trying to draw younger parishioners.
“Our church is going through a transitional period where there are only a few kids,” Marrs said. “That’s part of our mission, to engage our community and build our numbers a bit. To be a more prominent pillar in our community. We are reaching out and trying to make it inviting for other folks to come.”
Warren currently lives in Erie, which is where Marrs is from. Marrs saw one of Warren’s shows during a trip back home. “I was blown away by his expertise,” Marrs said. “He does things that are very, very entertaining.”
James Warren will perform at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church on April 13.
in our ‘technicized’ society.”
Warren added, “People coming to my show will indeed see amazing things, but nothing they couldn’t do with some study and training. They will come to my show, have fun, be amazed, and go away uplifted, at least for a while, and hopefully a little more willing to imagine new possibilities for themselves and those they love.”
Warren stated that his performances are about much more than magic. “My show is called ‘Imagine Magic’ because I see it as an appeal to imagine our lives differently,” he said. “The great thing about the magician, which I think most people realize, is that the amazing possibilities the magician creates are done with little more than smoke and mirrors, rubber cement, thread, and cleverness. This kind of magic is an affirmation of the amazing things an individual can still do
After watching Warren’s show in 2011, Seitz-Brown spent time with the magician. “Later, at the conference, James helped me to read the Bible in a fresh way: The punishing violence at the cross was human; the healing love and forgiveness at the cross was divine,” Seitz-Brown said. “It was ‘magic.’ Unlike many interpretations that made God look like Zeus, firing lightning arrows of punishment at us, Jesus revealed the true character of the Father. I invited James both because of his joyful entertainment, but also because of his faithful witness to the more beautiful Gospel.”
Seitz-Brown said those who attend the show will hear a meaningful message. “James’ combination of joyful entertainment and deep theological insight clearly makes an impact on people,” he said. “His way of framing the cross - distinguishing human violence from divine love - offers a transformative way of understanding Jesus’ witness.”
The East Petersburg Historical Society (EPHS) will host a program on Monday, April 7, at 7 p.m. at the East Petersburg Community Center Building at East Petersburg Community Park, 6051 Pine St., East Petersburg. Corey Aspril will speak about hauntings in Lancaster County and East Petersburg. Audience members will have an opportunity to share their stories, as well.
The EPHS will have several public events throughout the year at the Daniel Wolf House museum, 1905 State St., East
Petersburg. These will include an antique tractor show on Saturday, June 21, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; the Fall Family Event on Saturday, Oct. 18, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and the annual Christmas open house on Saturday, Dec. 6, from 5 to 8 p.m. In addition, EPHS’ archive museum at the Daniel Wolf House is open on the first Saturday of every month from 9 a.m. to noon.

Club members will guide kids and their families “state by state” and educate visitors on the various fossils found in that specific state as well as collecting techniques.
Participants can arrive anytime between 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
The kids will join the Fossil Safari in progress at the current speaker location and rotate with the speaker and group, visiting each state fossil table during the safari rotation.
It is estimated that visitors will spend between 10 and 15 minutes at each station, and the entire safari will take an average of an hour and a half, depending on interest and participation. “It’s a family adventure,” Sue said. “Families follow their kids along.”
After the families complete their safari, they are welcome to revisit any booths on their own while a new safari rotation starts again.
Food by the Trinity Church Guild
will be available for purchase.
Sue, who lives in Lancaster, rediscovered her love of fossil hunting with Chuck. “It’s a childhood passion and hobby that I’ve had,” she said. “We have always been interested in it. We were looking for something to be able to do together. We have met so many interesting people all across the United States doing this. It’s interesting when you make friendships based on the same passion you have.”
Sue noted that introducing fossils and minerals to young people is beneficial on a couple levels. “It’s important to get kids involved with science,” she said. “Then our club can continue on in the future. You always have to have new interest. It’s really interesting to see this spark passion. Some of the kids who come in might not be interested (at first), but they have siblings who are interested. Once
they’re there, they’re very excited about it.”
She hopes the Fossil Safari encourages a new generation of fossil hunters. “I’m sure someone sparked our interest when I was young,” Sue said. “I was a fossil hunter when I was little. Then I took a break because of my (nursing) career. I needed something that I’m interested in again, so I went back to something from my childhood. You never know who you are going to inspire.”
