HARC, West Hempfield Sign Parks Agreement By Dayna M. Reidenouer
In recent years, the Hempfield Area Recreation Commission (HARC) has been doing business as the Hempfield recCenter. HARC has now grown beyond the athletic complex at 950 Church St., Landisville, by assuming responsibility for the parks of West Hempfield Township as well as one in Mountville borough. “We want to get outside our four walls,” explained HARC director Jeffrey Book. “We’re looking to expand our presence in the community.” HARC is an intergovernmental cooperative composed of Hempfield School District, East Hempfield and West Hempfield townships, and the boroughs of Mountville and East Petersburg. Accepting oversight of the parks is an organic part of that relationship.
“HARC is essentially our Parks and Recreation Department,” West Hempfield Township manager Andrew Stern explained. “It was natural, instead of expanding our department, to have HARC take over that function.” The management and maintenance agreement between HARC and West Hempfield Township specifies that HARC will be responsible for managing employees and independent contractors who take care of the parks; scheduling reservations for the parks’ pavilions, open spaces, fields, and other amenities; providing reasonably priced programs in the parks; carrying out routine repairs and maintenance; opening the restroom facilities at the parks each day; and having a licensed inspector perform monthly checks to ensure safety. Additionally, HARC personnel will attend quarterly meetings with See Parks Agreement pg 5
Announcing an agreement for HARC to manage West Hempfield Township’s parks are (from left) HARC executive director Jeffrey Book and director of programs Cristine Maser and township director of facilities Andrew Wurst, manager Andrew Stern, and director of public works Dale Getz.

Good Samaritan Services (GSS) is a Chester County- and Lancaster Countybased organization that provides emergency shelter and transitional and permanent housing for those experiencing homelessness. To honor the 10th anniversary of CEO Nate Hoffer’s leadership at Good Samaritan Services (GSS), GSS board and staff have launched a campaign to fund permanent housing rental assistance for the organization’s Bridge of Hope @ GSS program. Through the “It’s Good to Be Home!” campaign, GSS is seeking businesses, churches, schools, community groups and individuals to make donations or set up fundraising teams to help avert eviction and homelessness for single women with children in Chester and Lancaster counties. When Hoffer was appointed as leader of GSS 10 years ago, the organization had three houses and served approximately 15 men in emergency shelter and transitional
housing in a year. Now, GSS serves more than 185 men, women and children every year, working across the spectrum of needs, from emergency shelter and transitional housing to long-term affordable housing and permanent housing, with additional programs like matched savings, microfinance, mentoring and job training. To find out more about the campaign, to donate or to raise funds through the crowd-sourced site Everyday Hero, readers may visit www.goodsam services.org/good-to-be-home. Pictured on front:

making them in molds. “When you knew he was going to open his kiln, you would go to his place and pick from the kiln what you needed,” explained Royer. “You could also tell him ahead of time what you might want so he could make it.” Not all potters stayed put in one town, however. Part of the display includes pieces by Willoughby Smith, a potter who took orders and even sold pottery doorto-door. Smith, who is associated with Berks and Montgomery counties, had a special carrying case filled with his flower pot samples, which fit into the bag like nesting dolls. “Smith would go around (from house to house) and ask what size pot (a customer) wanted and sell them,” said Royer. In addition to the flower pots, the display features cups, jugs, and a food mold similar to a bundt cake pan, along with a photo of Smith with one of his apprentices. Redware items, which are individually made, range from simple utilitarian plates and bowls to unusual pitchers shaped like heads. Platters were often decorated using one of two techniques. “(Potters) put glaze down on (the item), and then they scratch through it (using a technique) called sgraffito,” said Royer, who explained that the scratches allowed the

Beyond.” Part one of the exhibit opened on March 10 at the museum, 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster, and it will remain open through Tuesday, Dec. 31. Part two, which will feature the rest of the pieces Royer has gathered from the Barnes Foundation, The Hershey Story, Winterthur Museum, and Landis Valley’s own collection, will open in March of 2020. Royer said that when she began to plan the 2019 exhibit, she realized that redware had not been displayed in the museum for quite some time. “I started to talk to institutions and private collectors,” recalled Royer. “We were finding wonderful pieces, and the collection was getting bigger.” It was too big, in fact, to display all the pieces in one year, hence the two-year, two-part exhibit. Royer noted that one catalog will be published for the two parts. Royer explained that one reason so many potters came to Pennsylvania was in the makeup of the earth. “The clay here is similar to what was found in Europe,” she said, adding that most potters were also farmers. “They would farm, and then, when they had downtime, they would make pottery,” said Royer. “They had all the clay on their land, and redware was cheap to make.” Each town had its own potter throwing pieces on a wheel or
skep, footrests for a stove, and a variety of decorative items, including a piece in the form of a tiny cabin that is really a bank. Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum encompasses 100 acres in Manheim Township. The goal of the nonprofit organization is to collect, preserve, and interpret Pennsylvania German community history from 1740 to 1940. More information about the museum may be found by visiting www.landisvalleymuseum .org or by calling 717-569-0401.
natural red color to show through. Slip decoration is a technique that creates lines and writing on pieces. Decorations often include birds and flowers. “Redware has similarities to other Pennsylvania German (creations) such as fraktur and blanket chests,” said Royer. “Pennsylvania Germans love colors and designs,” she added. “Just look at their quilts.” Use of redware was not confined to the kitchen and dining room. Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Lancaster County has announced that its newest class of CASA volunteers was sworn in on March 20 by Judge Jeffrey J. Reich. The ceremony was held at Emerald Foundation on Oregon Pike in Lancaster. The newly appointed CASA volunteer advocates join more than 200 other community members who have been trained and are advocating for foster children in the county’s dependency court system. Advocates’ goal is to ensure that the children’s needs are recognized and the children’s best interests are considered both in the courtroom and in the community. CASA seeks to ensure a qualified, compassionate adult will fight for and protect a child’s right to be safe, to be treated with dignity and respect, and to learn and grow in the security of a loving family. The eight new CASAs are Annie Rose Ansley of Lancaster, Charles Blakinger of Lititz, Kelley Greiner of Lititz, Bonnie

Knights Blank Comets, Topple Cedar Crest in Lax Freshmen Brynn Axe, Kelsea Dague and Lindsey Durkota each scored twice. Kyley Yurchak, Kayla Brooks and Haylee Eide netted one goal apiece. A major part of the scoring prowess being present on the field this year is that of familiar faces being back for the Knights. “It’s nice to have them all back - to not have to do too much training as far as getting back into the thick of things,” head coach Elizabeth Erb stated. “We didn’t have a single senior on the team last year, so we didn’t lose anybody to graduation. That doesn’t happen very often in
Erb added. Sandwiched in between the two league matches was a non-league clash at Exeter on Tuesday. The Eagles scored eight goals in each half and topped Hempfield 16-7. Durkota’s hat trick plus two goals and two assists by Lauren Dague led the Knights’ offense. Morrison and Yurchak each scored once. “It didn’t feel like a nine-point loss,” Erb said. “The score was a little deceptive. We couldn’t maintain possession enough to get good looks on the cage. “Exeter is a very competitive opponent - they’re always battling to win Berks,” continued the coach. “We didn’t play our cleanest game. We made some errors such as turnovers and we didn’t capitalize on a lot of the 50/50 balls. We forced things and didn’t make smart plays when we had the ball.” TRACK The Knights’ track & field season opened with a loss to Section One rival McCaskey on Tuesday. The Red Tornado defeated the Hempfield boys 98-51 and the girls 81-69 in the meet at McCaskey. In addition to winning the 400 in 52.5, Tanner Hess led off for the 4x400 relay team, helping that quartet establish a winning pace of 3:41.6. Joel Dionne anchored this crew with Will Yager and Casey Deck following Hess on the track. Justin Rittenhouse (4:35.6) won

Kelsea Dague added two goals. Lauren Dague, who also had one assist, scored one goal as did Catherine Molitor. Kyah Peifer and Cassidy Roack shared time in goal, just as they had in the Penn Manor game where they recorded two saves each. Against the Falcons, each goalie grabbed three saves in the victory. Erb explained that while Peifer is the starter, Roack’s presence on the roster as a very dependable backup helps to strengthen the goalie position. “It’s a position to cultivate and grow,” she said. “We have had years where it has been difficult to fill that position. The girls’ team won three field events, including Amanda Keller’s 8-foot pole vault. Ava Hostetler added a 15-8 long jump while Alexa Neiderer claimed the javelin with a 90-10.5 toss. Cahsia Paige dashed to a first-place finish in the high hurdles at 15.6 seconds. BASEBALL Hempfield’s first loss of the season came on Saturday in a non-league pitchers’ duel at Dallastown. The Knights lost 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning on an unearned run. Hempfield, falling to 4-1 on the year, led 1-0 until an unearned run in the sixth inning tied the game. It came off reliever Luke Fiore who allowed only four hits while starter Brandon Husted pitched out of trouble and kept the Wildcats off the scoreboard into the fourth inning before giving way to Fiore. Husted had two strikeouts and allowed four walks. Justin Lichtenwalner’s RBI double plated the lone Hempfield run as C.J. Saylor came around to score. The Knights were playing on consecutive days. On Friday they blanked Section One rival Manheim Township
9-0 at home, improving to 2-0 in the league. The offensive contributions were shared by many. The pitching gem belonged to Ty Vaughn, who went the distance, striking out five and walking only two batters in the three-hit shutout. After Hempfield loaded the bases in the third inning on singles by Fiore and Lichtenwalner as well as an Alec Santiago walk, Vaughn ripped a two run double. The Knights went on to plate five runs in the inning, grabbing a 6-0 lead. Christian LaBarbera had scored the team’s first run an inning earlier. After a run in the sixth, Cole Houser launched a solo homer to make it 8-0. Fiore scored on Vaughn’s sacrifice fly for the final run of the game. On Wednesday, it was Lichtenwalner who pitched a complete game victory. The Knights topped Cedar Crest 4-2 on the road. Lichtenwalner fanned 12 batters and walked only one, surrendering two runs on six hits. Saylor tripled and scored on Houser’s RBI single. Santiago added a two-run single. Matt Drenchko’s RBI double in the fourth scored LaBarbera. Andrew Blough’s strong relief effort helped Hempfield hold off

MERCHANDISER - Hempfield Edition with a tight, non-league match at home against Palmyra. Hempfield prevailed 15-12 on Monday evening as Kohl Wesner scored five times and Cameron Aksu poured in four goals. Each of the Hempfield goal scorers had at least one assist on the night with Jacob Notoli assisting on two goals. Bobby Griffith gave Hempfield a two-goal, one assist performance. Grayson Dague, Matt Heuston, and Tyler Gearhart each scored once and assisted on a goal. Hempfield out-shot Palmyra 25-21. In Tuesday’s L-L League match at Comet Field, the Knights came back from a 3-2 deficit with a seven-goal outburst in the second quarter and went on to win 16-7.
Aksu notched a game-high five goals and two assists. Heuston (4, 1) also aided the attack while Griffith and Wesner each finished with two goals. Single goals came from Notoli, Grube and Dague. Ryan Heuston added an assist as did Witmer. Thursday’s home game against league rival Cedar Crest was still close heading into the third quarter. That was when the Knights outscored the Falcons 6-1 on their way to a 19-7 win. Wesner stepped it up with a seven-goal performance. Griffith notched a hat trick and assisted twice. Ryan Heuston (2g, 1a) also chipped in as did Aksu (2g, 2a). Gearhart (3a) Dague (2a) Grube (1a), Owen Nicodemus and A.J.
McAlpine each had one goal. TENNIS After a 5-2 victory over Conestoga Valley on Tuesday improved the Knights’ record to 2-0 in L-L League boys’ tennis, the Knights suffered a 3-2 non-league loss to Red Lion on Wednesday afternoon. The loss dropped the team’s record
to 2-3 overall. On Tuesday, Dillon Otto and Nishant Balepur were among those earning team points for the Knights in both doubles and singles competition. The pair posted a tough gritty 9-8 victory (7-4) over Owen Horst and Matthew Hoy of CV in the first doubles match on Hempfield’s home court.

Teammates Nolan Deck and Alex Cooke earned an 8-4 win at second doubles before the Buckskins grabbed a point at third doubles. Otto came through with a 6-1, 6-2 win at first singles. Balepur, a senior, won a tight one again, defeating Hoy 7-6, 6-2. Deck opened with a 6-3 win in the first set of number three singles. However, a 6-3 win for Luca Puleo and a marathon set that ended with Puleo winning 15-13 gave the Buckskins their second team point. Cooke finished off the match with a 6-4, 6-2 win. The Red Lion match was also at Hempfield with Balepur’s 6-1, 6-0 win at number two singles and Deck’s 7-6, 6-4 victory in the third singles counting for the Knights’ points

Governor Mifflin on a rainy chilly Monday at Cumru Elementary School. After the Mustangs scored two runs early in the game, LaBarbera got out of a jam and Blough went the rest of the way in a 7-2 Hempfield win. Doubles by Saylor and Seth Constein as well as an RBI single by Lichtenwalner helped fuel Hempfield’s comeback. Fiore’s RBI double was the big hit later in this non-league game. SOFTBALL Hempfield played three softball games in three consecutive days and three different pitchers earned victories. Gabi Turner earned the win in Wednesday’s 12-1 final at Cedar Crest. Asaysha Raihl was the winner in Thursday’s non-league 9-5 win over Wilson. Staying on their home field for Friday, the Knights posted a three-run sixth inning to help Casey Martin earn a 9-5 victory over Manheim Township. Hempfield improved to 3-0 (2-0 league). The Cedar Crest game was shortened due to the 10-run rule. The Knights scored four times in the fourth inning to make it 9-0 and added three runs in the fifth. Katie Beamesderfer drove in Hempfield’s first run of the game. Raihl had a double and scored a run on Kendall Fruchti’s RBI double. The Knights also took advantage of three errors as well as playing fundamental softball on the base paths, including a stolen base by Constable and a sacrifice fly RBI by Turner. Anastasia’s double scored Turner and Raihl in a late rally to help seal the win over Township. Also in that game Bella Rankin delivered a key RBI to keep Hempfield in front. VOLLEYBALL Hempfield posted two earlyseason victories over Section One rivals, winning 3-0 at Manheim Township on Tuesday and duplicating that margin of victory at Penn Manor on Thursday. The Knights raised their record to 2-0. In the Township match, the Streaks made it close in the third set, before Hempfield put away the match with a 25-21 win. The Knights opened with two solid wins, 25-10 and 25-13. Elliott De La Torre poured in 12 kills and registered one block. Owen Hanzelman had a tremendous match as well, serving up three aces and recording nine digs while Hudson Smiley distributed 13 assists. Though the Penn Manor match was also 3-0, the Knights needed to scrap their way through the second set, finally posting a 37-35 win. The other two sets were also relatively close - 25-19 and 25-18. Hanzelman topped the team in kills with nine while De La torre recorded three blocks. Colson Hunt served three aces and gave out 18 assists. Fellow junior Alex Drager had a team-high 13 digs. The Arts at Millersville in partnership with the Lancaster Dance Initiative will present “Celebrate Ballet and World Dance” on Sunday, April 7, at 3 p.m. in Steinman Hall at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The performance, in its eighth year, will highlight the talent and diversity of Lancaster County and will feature selections from classical ballet and from Eastern European, Indian, Middle Eastern, Filipino, and West African dance. Coordinated by Valerie Henry and committee members Marylin Beittel, Lynn Brooks, and Cynthia Burkhart, this community dance event aims to foster goodwill among diverse dancers, groups, and schools. Henry, who has performed and choreographed around the world, started dancing and teaching in the area in 2005. Looking for a way to connect with the larger dance community, she started “Celebrate Ballet and World Dance” at the behest of Harvey Owens. This year’s concert is dedicated to the memory of Pat Kautter, who passed away in August 2018. Kautter founded Hempfield’s
Dance Theatre program, directing and choreographing for it for 25 years and sending her dancers on in the arts world. In addition, she served in several executive positions for the Hempfield Education Association and helped to write national dance education standards. Groups performing in this year’s “Celebrate Ballet and World Dance” program are two groups from Encore Dance Studio, led by Melanie Burkhart and Dana Shelley; Khalesse Middle Eastern Dance, led by Cindy Burkhart; soloist Mia Vera, a Filipino dancer from Full Circle Dance Studio; students from Premiere Danse Academy, led by Amy Meehan; N’Bonye Dance and Drum ensemble, led by Janet Peck; Lancaster World Dance, led by Zita Angelo; Mahisha and Manushi Tanna, performing a fusion of Bharatanatyam and Bollywood; and Movement Laboratory’s Youth Ensemble from Lebanon. To purchase tickets, readers may visit www.artsmu.com, call 717-871-7600, or visit the box offices at the Ware Center and the Student Memorial Center, Room 103, on the Millersville University campus.
DVS Plans Spring Gala Domestic Violence Services (DVS), a program of Community Action Partnership, will hold its 16th annual spring gala, “Celebrating the Journey,” on Saturday, April 13, at the Lancaster Country Club, 1466 New Holland Pike, Lancaster, from 6 to 11 p.m. Dinner will be served at 7:30 p.m. The night will celebrate the journeys and courage of domestic violence survivors. The inaugural Catalyst for Change Award, which recognizes community members and organizations that support the mission of DVS, will be presented to Susan Van Zant, founder of Jan’s Circle of Friends, an organization that advocates for survivors and fundraises to give back to programs that assist children who have experienced parental loss or are survivors of
domestic violence. In five years, the organization has raised more than $183,400. In addition to the award presentation, the event will feature hors d’oeuvres and a plated dinner, along with a disc jockey and dancing. Auction prizes will include a waterfront getaway, an overnight trip to a Penn State University football game, a behind-the-scenes experience at a Lititz production company, a Barnstormers Manager for a Day experience, and more. Separate costs have been set for individual tickets and for tables of eight. Tickets must be reserved by Thursday, April 4. To register, readers may visit https://caplanc.org/our-programs/safety -empowerment/dvsgala/. Individuals may donate to the organization’s mission by visiting https://caplanc.org/donate/.
