The Mountville Community Services Foundation (MCSF) is in the midst of a project to surface the Mountville Community Pool, located in Froelich Park, 350 W. Main St., Mountville. The last major resurfacing was completed in 2006, and it is usually recommended to repeat the process every six or seven years. “ We’ve stretched it,” said MCSF board member Harry Morgan. “The concrete (finally) started breaking down,” added fellow board member Bill Eckman. The delay was prompted by the cost for the project, which is estimated to be $59,000. The project is expected to be completed by Wednesday, May 1, which is when the board and pool staff members will begin readying for
the start of the new pool season. The pool will open for Memorial Day weekend - Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, May 25, 26, and 27 - and be open for the first weekend in June Saturday and Sunday, June 1 and 2. It will be open daily beginning on Saturday, June 8, and will close on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2. The pool hours will be noon to 8 p.m. each day. An open house has been set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 27. “Hopefully the pool will be filled by then,” Morgan remarked. During the open house, members of the public may tour the facility, meet the coaches of the Wave youth swim team, and learn about SwimAmerica swimming lessons. Folks may also purchase pool memberships, the cost of which will be discounted until May 1. While memberships are not required, See MCSF Golf Outing pg 9

Donations Sought For Joni And Friends In his eighth-grade Bible class at Dayspring Christian Academy in Mountville, Jonathan Moynihan heard an announcement about a special project through which he and his classmates were to come up with a way to serve the community. Jonathan knew he wanted to help people with disabilities, and he and his friend Gavin Scott began to brainstorm and research. In their research, they learned about Joni and Friends, an organization
that collects wheelchairs and gives them to people in different countries who cannot afford them. They also learned that there is a Joni and Friends building in the same town as their school. Jonathan and Gavin called Joni and Friends and were informed that the organization is still collecting wheelchairs and would appreciate additional donations. The boys invite the community to donate wheelchairs, crutches, collapsible walkers, and canes. Wheelchairs should be manual, not motorized, and crutches and canes should be metal and not wood. All donations of any condition will be appreciated. Donations may be brought to the Alliance Church of Elizabethtown, 425 Cloverleaf Road, Elizabethtown, between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays and on Wednesdays between 6:30 and 9 p.m. Individuals are asked to call the church office at 717-367-2995 before dropping off their items.
As part of a community service project, Dayspring Christian Academy students Gavin Scott (left) and Jonathan Moynihan invite the community to donate wheelchairs, crutches, walkers, and canes to Joni and Friends, which will give the items to people in need around the world. Donations may be dropped off at the Alliance Church of Elizabethtown.

McConkie is presently working toward her ASL teaching certification while attending Goldey-Beacom College. Westminster will be represented at this year’s sing-along by soprano Carolyn McLain in addition to Floyd Rawleigh Jr., who will be the “Hallelujah” chorus guest conductor, and Westminister retired organist Pat Bleecker, who will play. PA Family Travel Fair from pg 1 and Pittsburgh, but there is so much in the middle people aren’t aware of,” noted Royal. Following the success of the first fair in spring 2018, Royal has lined up exhibitors, along with amusements for children, food for purchase, and opportunities to win prizes, for the second free event, which will be held at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, April 27, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. In 2018, Royal noted that much of the state would be represented in some way at the fair, but this year, she promises even more. “We will have a lot of new exhibitors,” said Royal, noting that most of last year’s exhibitors will be returning. New this year, will be Sesame Place, Elk Country Visitors Center, and the Little League Museum. McKean County, location of the Allegheny National Forest and the famous Kinzua Bridge, a former railroad bridge that is now a tourist attraction, will be represented, along with the Pennsylvania Great Outdoors Area, which covers five counties in the northern region. Also represented will be the area of the Eagles Mere, which will include the Eagles Mere Air Museum, Eagles Mere Auto Museum, and the Eagles Mere Inn. Elk Mountain Ski Resort will be represented. Railroad enthusiasts will find the Colebrookdale Railroad, and for those interested in Pennsylvania’s rich mine history, there will be information about the Pioneer Tunnel Historic Coal Mine in Schuylkill County. Returning this year will be DelGrosso’s Park & Laguna Splash and representatives of Indiana County, home
of the Jimmy Stewart Museum. KPETS (Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services) team members will bring their friendly service dogs again, as well. Prizes will include a weekend package for two at the Nature Inn at Bald Eagle. The excursion will include two nights at the inn, meals, and a kayak tour guided by a park naturalist. A visit to the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon for four will also be given away. The prize will include two nights in an extended stay suite at the Canyon Motel; a family pack of tickets from Ole Covered Wagon Tours, which includes horse-drawn tours of the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon; and a gift basket of Potter-Tioga County products. The fair puts emphasis on family fun, so children will find plenty to do, including a scavenger hunt with a grand prize of tickets to DelGrosso’s Park & Laguna Splash. Entertainment will be provided by WJTL’s Kids Cookie Break. In addition, magic shows with balloon artist Randy Ward will be held at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Children will also have a chance to meet a number of mascots, including Chipper,
the Herr’s mascot; Yummie from Kitchen Kettle Village; and Yogi Bear from Yogi’s Jellystone Camp Resort in Quarryville. Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland will be on-site to perform a show about creatures that live in the rain forest at noon. In addition, Tiny Town will bring a castle to the venue. According to Royal, guests at the fair will have the opportunity to gain a wealth of information from the visitors bureaus that will have booths at the event. “We will have 15 visitors bureaus. I love what the bureaus will be presenting,” said Royal. “They will talk about all the special things in their areas, and nobody knows their particular destination better than they do.” Hungry attendees will find at least seven food trucks selling a variety of items, including Auntie Anne’s, Au-Sam’s Trolley Stop, Kunzler Rolling Grill, K’s Kitchen, Mad Dash Artisan Grilled Cheese, Smoothie King, and Waffle Mamas. Plenty of free parking will be available at the fair. Readers who would like more information are welcome to visit www.pafamilytravel.com.

For more than two decades, the “Messiah” Sing-Along has been held in Lancaster County. It has always been and remains a drop-in event. “The people can come as they are,” said Clair Leaman, who had conducted a “Messiah” Sing-Along in Chester County for more than a decade before organizing the Lancaster version. “Just stop in. There are no rehearsals.” The 22nd annual “Messiah” Sing-Along will take place on Friday, April 26, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. No child care will be provided. Singers will begin arriving at 6:30 p.m. According to Leaman, about 150 singers from Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties and even out of state typically take part. Leaman organizes them by voice part. Audiences of as many as 600
have attended past events. The full “Messiah” by G.F. Handel is organized into three parts. The first part covers Christ’s birth and fulfillment of prophecy, and the second part focuses on suffering and death, while the third part concludes with triumph over sin and death. The Christmas program, which includes part one, is performed in Chester County in December. At Easter, the program begins with the overture and then includes all of parts two and three. Perhaps the most well-known segment of “Messiah” is the “Hallelujah” chorus in part two, where the audience is encouraged to stand and sing with the vocalists. Leaman noted that sign language interpretation of the presentation will be provided by Carol Stevens and Grace McConkie. “Originally, it was just Carol (interpreting),” recalled Leaman. “But then Grace became interested (in interpreting), and she studied

Road, Manheim, at 9 a.m. and will go through what marketing and social media specialist Khalee Kreider noted that her family calls “Kreider Valley.” “Last year, Kreider Farms hosted the Global 6K for the first year with high expectations to bring clean water to 2,000 people,” said Khalee, a member of the fourth generation to be involved in the family business. “We went over and beyond our goal, raising upward of $150,000 and providing clean water to over 3,000 people. We would like to meet or even exceed our achievement last year in 2019.” Separate fees have been set for adults and for children under age 18. World Vision promises that each Global 6K for Water adult participant’s registration fee provides clean water for one person in need for a lifetime. Six kilometers has been set for the event to represent how far the average person in the developing world must walk for water, which is often contaminated, to sustain themselves and their families. According to information provided by World Vision, the average woman in rural Africa walks 6 kilometers to haul 40 pounds of water every day. Worldwide, women and girls spend a combined 200 million hours hauling water daily. Water projects by World Vision are developed in conjunction with local leaders to create safe sources of drinking water, whether through a borehole well, an irrigation system, or a pump or filtration system powered by a solar panel. The organization also provides training so that local folks can maintain and repair the systems to ensure the project is sustainable. Although this is the second year the Kreider family has hosted a Global 6K site, Khalee’s parents, Ron and Hollee, have

had a long-standing relationship with World Vision. “They have been on multiple trips with World Vision to multiple countries including Kenya, Zambia, Tanzania, Malawi, India, and Bangladesh to see the work first hand that World Vision is doing in these developing communities,” Khalee said. “Last year we were excited to host a 6K on our farm and invite the community to join us in supporting this organization close to our hearts and make an impact bringing clean water, something we all take for granted, to children and communities around the world.” The run/walk will be held rain or shine. Last year’s event took place in the rain. “It ended up pouring last year, so we have our fingers crossed for sun. We prayed for water, and we got it, just not in the form we were expecting,” Khalee joked. Most of the course will be on paved roads or sidewalks, but there may be sections that are gravel. Strollers are welcome, and Khalee noted that even with the rain last year, people using strollers did not seem to have difficulties with the course. At the end of the course, chocolate milk, other beverages, and lactose-free ice cream will be served. Off-site parking will be available at Doe Run Elementary School, 281 Doe Run Road, Manheim, and Manheim Brethren in Christ Church, 54 N. Penryn Road, Manheim. Shuttles will run from the parking lots to the start line beginning at 7 a.m., with the last shuttle picking up at 8:30 a.m. The buses will start back up at 10:30 a.m. to transport folks back to the parking areas. Participants may register in advance at www.teamworldvision.org/team/ kreiderfarms, or they may sign up at the event.

Hempfield Softball Tops CV in Crossover Action by Ara Grigorian
Hempfield opened the week with an 8-3 defeat of Conestoga Valley in crossover action. Thanks to a four-run sixth inning, the Knights took this one from CV, giving Gabi Turner the complete game win. The 12-hit attack included a double and a triple by Kendall Fruchtl who went 3-for-3 and drove in three runs. Bella Rankin’s 2-for-3 game in the leadoff spot also led to her scoring three times. Anastasia Berardi homered and drove in two runs. Turner helped herself with a two-run double. She also stole a base as did Asaysha Raihl, who also scored a run. Skylar Constable was 2-for-4 with two stolen bases. The Knights’ 16-0, five inning defeat of Lebanon on Wednesday was an anomaly in that Hempfield’s offense scored 16 runs on five hits. Hempfield took advantage of 13 walks and three hit batsmen. Bella Rankin was one of the offensive stars, hitting a bases-clearing double for three of her five RBIs plus driving in

two more on sacrifice fly RBIs. Asaysha Raihl had two runs batted in, but without a base hit. She walked three times and came around to score each time. Mataya Chap went 2-for-2 and also scored three times Raihl struck out six batters while pitching shutout ball. Hempfield dropped to 6-2 in the league (7-2 overall) with a 4-1 loss at Elizabethtown on Friday. The Bears outhit the Knights 11-4. Hempfield played error-free defense behind starter Gabi Turner, who struck out three and walked only one batter. BOYS’ LACROSSE Each year in the Lancaster-Lebanon League’s battles in boys’ lacrosse competition, all eyes are on one particular rivalry Hempfield versus Manheim Township. Whenever the twain shall meet, fans will most likely be watching the two top programs in the league trying to outscore each other on the field. “There is a lot of history there,” said Hempfield coach Matt McAlpine. “Both programs have been successful for a long time. It’s two of the oldest programs with a storied rivalry. It seems we’re both always there in the postseason.” On Wednesday, Manheim Township played host to the first meeting of the 2019 season between these two rivals. The Blue Streaks pulled away in the fourth quarter, scoring five unanswered goals to top Hempfield 17-9, improving their record to 7-1 (5-0 league) while the Black Knights fell to 6-2 (4-1). “We were back and forth with them,” McAlpine explained. “Halfway into the third quarter, we started playing sloppy lacrosse. We got away from our principles and the way we would like to play the game. “We started playing from behind the entire game,” continued the coach. “We started pressing too hard and tried carrying the weight as individuals.” Offensively, Hempfield’s scoring was shared by five different players - four of whom scored two goals each. “We were well spread out in that game with four or five guys scoring,” McAlpine said. Bobby Griffith was one of the multiple goal scorers. He scored twice and assisted twice while Cameron Aksu and Kohl Wesner each had two goals and one assist. Bryce Witmer tallied two goals while Matt Heuston had a goal and two assists.
Eddie Newman, Sean Curcio and Thomas Freeman each scored four for the Streaks. Bryce Hutchinson notched a hat trick. The Streaks out-shot the Knights 24-12 with Hempfield goalie Matt Weist recording seven saves. Asked about rebounding from this loss, McAlpine replied, “To bounce back, is a good question. It’s the midway point for us in the season. We want to be able to look back at this game and address the things we did wrong and realize that they’re fixable mistakes going forward.” TRACK & FIELD The Warwick girls’ track and field team edged Hempfield 88-62 in Monday’s Section One meet at Warwick. In the boys’ meet, the Warriors topped the Knights 99-51 as both Hempfield squads fell to 0-3. Freshman Delaney Minder was a multiple winner, capturing the 1,600-meter race in a time of 5:28.9 and winning the shot put with a 31-1 toss. Cahsia Page sprinted to victory in the high hurdles (15.4) and Bella Hollenbach won the 800 in 2:28.8. The 16-4 long jump by Ava Hostetler gave the Knights another first-place finish. In the boys’ meet, the foursome of Will Yaeger, Casey Deck, Jack Mieszkalski, and Tanner Hess captured the 4x400 relay in a time of 3:23.3. Running the 400 on an individual basis, Hess took first place (50.7). Yaeger won the 300 hurdles in 43.4 while senior Justin Rittenhouse won the 1,600 in 4:31.7. Rittenhouse also had a strong showing in the 1,600 on Saturday as Hempfield was the site of the Black Knight Invitational where several teams from District Three and District One converged on Landisville. Rittenhouse finished second in the 1,600 with a time of 4:24.58 GIRLS LACROSSE Lizzie Yurchak and Lindsey Durkota each scored 21 goals while Lauren Dague racked up 15 assists over a four-game span that saw the Hempfield girls’ lacrosse team improve to 10-1 on the year, winning three non-league matches plus a Friday afternoon win at L-L League foe Lampeter-Strasburg. In Tuesday’s defeat of Kennard-Dale, Yurchak had five of the Knights’ goals and assisted on another in the 14-6 win. Durkota scored four times. Lauren Dague dished out five assists and scored one goal herself. Regan

The Knights out-shot the Pioneers 34-17 but only led 7-5 at the half before going on a 13-4 scoring spree. Durkota poured seven goals while Lauren Dague (4a) and Yurchak (2a) each scored six times. Brynn Axe also added a goal. The win improved the team’s league mark to 6-0. Saturday had the Knights playing a doubleheader. with Cedar Crest. That Wednesday match was against Manheim Township and saw the Knights post a 5-2 win. Two days earlier, they had topped Garden Spot 7-0. Against the Spartans, Dillon Otto and Nishant Balepur stayed true to their game and topped their opponents 8-2 at number one doubles. Both Otto and Balepur also won their singles matches 6-0, 6-0. SAY YOU SAW IT IN THE Merchandiser Alexander Cooke and Adeet Parikh claimed the second doubles by an 8-3 margin while Noland Deck and Trent Meyers went on to an 8-0 win at third doubles. Deck and Cooke won their respective singles matches as well. Deck cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win at number three singles. Cooke edged Adam Hershey 7-5 in the first set and won the next one 6-1. The Township match was closer than the 5-2 score indicated. In the opening doubles, Otto and Balepur slipped past Drew Greiner and T.J. Kade 8-5. Deck and Parikh were 9-8 (7-2) winners over Matt Sciamanna and Nick Oster at second doubles. Meyers and Eli Worley teamed up at number three doubles. They were on the short end of an 8-2 match. While Otto, Balepur and Deck won their respective singles matches in straight sets, Sciamanna earned a team point for MT at fourth singles. Sunday is Easter. Why? Friday is Good Friday. Why? The Knights wrapped up the week with (Google it!) (Google it!) a non-league match at Exeter, defeating the Eagles 5-2. The two Exeter points came in close batJesus, as was His giving Jesus rose from the dead, tles. Balepur won the second set 6-1 after a manner, gave His life on a proving death could not 7-5 setback. deficit to do so. Durkota scored six times and Yurchak five plus an assist. Lauren Dague notched a hat trick. Kelsea Dague (2, 1) and Axe (1, 1) also contributed. The Mustangs outshot the Knights 25-21 but thanks to Peifer’s five saves helped Hempfield hold on. Later in the day, the hat tricks came from Kayla Brooks (1a) and Lauren Dague (5a) while Yurchak and Durkota scored five and four goals, respectively. Gillisse, Axe, and Kelsea Dague each tallied one goal. Roarke made four saves and Peifer added one. BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL The Knights bounced back nicely from a Section One loss to Warwick the previous week by posting a decisive 3-0 win over Cedar Crest on Thursday. The Knights improved to 4-1 as they topped the Falcons 25-9, 25-8 and 25-8. Ryan Givens and Colsen Hunt were among the leaders for Hempfield. Hunt distributed 37 assists and Givens drilled nine kills on the night and registered one block. The Knights got excellent serving as well with Ben Crabtre racking up five aces. Owen Hanzelman led the squad in digs with six. BASEBALL The baseball team’s week began by taking care of some unfinished business and continued with two wins with offensive eruptions. The Knights and Red Tornado were unable to finish the Section One ballgame on Friday, April 5, due to steady rains. The Knights carried the 2-0 lead into the continuation of that game, which took place four days later. Nick Fiore and Alec Santiago had the two runs batted in on Friday while Christian LaBarbera kept McCaskey scoreless into the fourth inning before the game’s suspension. Ty Vaughn took over on the mound Tuesday and also drove in two more runs as the Knights wrapped up a 4-1 win. Hempfield scored 18 runs on 18 hits in topping Lebanon 18-9 at Landisville on Wednesday. Santiago and Justin Lichtenwalner each had two RBI’s early in the game. The Knights plated five more in the second inning and extended their lead with five more in the third. They had five consecutive hits in the second inning and nearly matched that with four straight hits in the sixth. Hempfield remained unbeaten in the league at 7-0 while improving to 9-1 overall. The offense continued to click as the Knights topped Elizabethtown 12-4 at home on Friday. Just like the Lebanon game, the Knights scored in all but one of the innings. Vaughn’s double and Santiago’s single both resulted in first-inning RBIs. Vaughn had a two-run double in the second. Saylor’s RBI single scored Seth Constein. Saylor scored on Houser’s single and the Knights regained momentum in the third after E-town got on the scoreboard in the top of that inning. Fiore earned the victory while Jayden Ruby came on in relief to finish the game. BOYS’ TENNIS With a Section One match at home sandwiched between two other matches, the boys’ tennis team went 3-0 on the week and improved to 4-0 in the L-L League, keeping pace

Reighard Takes Part In ASB Program Students at James Madison University, Harrisonburg, Va., embarked on alternative spring break (ASB) trips around the country and world this year. The students spent the week serving others while living simply and submerging themselves in the culture of their surroundings. The student-led ASB trips took place from March 4 to 11. Each
trip focused on a social issue, such as homelessness, resettlement, environmentalism or community wellness, in a specific region. Adrienne Reighard of Lancaster was among the students who took part. Reighard, who is studying psychology, traveled to Crescent City, Calif., to volunteer with Redwood National and State Park.
