Reflecting On A “Legacy” Of Dance Theatre By Dayna M. Reidenouer

“Pat (Kautter) started the program in 1984 as a club activity. It grew to what it is under her leadership until 2008,” related Cody Smith, Kautter’s former student, former assistant, and eventual successor as director of Hempfield High School’s Dance Theatre. The 35th annual Dance Theatre production is also Smith’s 25th year of involvement, and he has drawn on pieces from the three-and-a-half decades for “Legacy,” which will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, May 3 and 4, and at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 5, in the Hempfield High School Performing Arts Center, 200 Stanley Ave., Landisville. A senior citizen preview performance of “Legacy” is slated for Thursday, May 2, at 7 p.m. Admission to the preview - the show’s

final dress rehearsal - will be free to all residents of Hempfield School District age 65 years and older. Tickets or preregistration are not required for the preview. For “Legacy,” Smith has chosen to reimagine some of the most iconic pieces from Dance Theatre’s history. Some original choreography has been included, and longtime patrons will recognize some throwbacks. Additionally, some songs from the past have been revisited with new concepts or contexts. “I chose pieces that I feel best represent the program and my friend Pat Kautter,” Smith said. “The rationale behind the pieces is to create a piece of theater that represents and encompasses the span of this program and the impact it has had on this community.” Smith is an embodiment of that See Dance Theatre pg 10

To commemorate 35 years of Dance Theatre, a show featuring reimagined past favorites will be performed at Hempfield High School on May 3, 4, and 5. This year also marks the 25th year that director Cody Smith, surrounded by the cast’s principal dancers, has been involved with Dance Theatre.

Bridge of Hope @ GSS aims to reduce homelessness among all women and children in the local community. From 2017 to 2018, its Permanent Housing Services program served 208 women and children, provided $87,792 in rental assistance to single mothers across Lancaster and Chester counties and helped 12 families graduate from the program, according to www.goodsamservices.org. The organization’s services include case management and goal planning, resource development, life skills and parenting support, mentoring/volunteer support and financial assistance for rent, utilities and transportation. In 2017, Good Samaritan Services took Bridge of Hope Lancaster and Chester Counties under its wing via a merger between the nonprofits. Both had the same mission but offered different services, so combining allowed them to be even more effective in accomplishing their goals. “As a result of the merger, families in our Bridge of Hope @ GSS program can now participate in our Matched Savings and Microloan programs,” explained Nate Hoffer, the CEO of Good Samaritan Services. “The Matched Savings program awards $600 and the Microloan program awards loans up to $2,500 to clients, which, when paid back, rebuilds their credit.” In October 2018, the Bridge of Hope @ GSS program was given several awards from Bridge of Hope National for being the highest-performing program site in the network across both the U.S. and Canada. “We received awards for serving the most families and successfully helping families move into permanent housing,” said Hoffer. Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) will again partner with Bridge of Hope @ GSS for the 12th annual Golf Outing, which completely benefits the nonprofit. “We have been supporting Bridge of

Hempfield Girls Earn First Track Win by Ara Grigorian

The Hempfield girls’ track and field team earned its first victory of the year, defeating Section One foe Manheim Township 78-63. The Black Knights improved to 1-3 on the year. The boys’ team fell to 0-4 following a 99-42 loss to Township. Junior Cahsia Page was a triple winner, dashing to victory in both the 100- and 200-meter events with respective times of 12.2 and 25.7 seconds. She also won the high hurdles in 15.0. Bella Hollenbach, who was part of

two winning relay teams, claimed the 800 at 2:35.6. Hollenbach, Sara Olujic, Marissa Martin and freshman Delaney Minder, who won the 1,600 in 5:48.9, teamed up for the winning time of 4:32.7 in the 4x400 relay. In the 4x800 relay victory (11:09.8), Hollenbach anchored the group that included Isabella Schwalm, Gabi Hollinger and Ella Kielmeyer. Junior Ava Hostetler gave the Knights their lone win in field events, taking the long jump with a 16-9.5 effort. Hempfield’s Tanner Hess won the

boys’ 400-m dash in 54.7 seconds while Will Yaeger took the 300 hurdles in 42.7. The shot put by Jaden Lopez went 48-1.75 for the Knights’ lone win the field events. VOLLEYBALL When the Black Knights topped Manheim Township 3-0 on Thursday, it was their third straight 3-0 victory of the week, including one against non-league foe Governor Mifflin on Monday. In fact it was the fourth straight opponent the Black Knights have blanked since a 3-1 loss to Section One rival Warwick on April 4. Head coach Mike Vogel was asked if the dominant play and the fourmatch win streak has been a result of the Knights’ lone league loss to date. “It was a wake-up call,” he said of the Warwick match. “Warwick is a very good team and they were better than we were. We are a young team and they have returned nearly everyone from a state-qualifying team of a year ago.” In Monday’s Mifflin match on the road, the Knights posted winning margins of 25-13, 25-16 and 25-15. Vogel played several players who showcased their abilities, including Adam Brossman and Eldin Lupic. “I think I played everybody,” he said. “Eldin Lupic and Adam Brossman had two aces each. We had an opportunity to play some other guys and didn’t have a letdown.” Elliot De La Torre had nine kills. Ben Crabtree and John Vogel each finished with five digs while Colsen Hunt had a match-high 19 assists. Owen Hanzelman and Ryan Givens each notched one block. On Tuesday at McCaskey, the first set ended in a 25-20 score - the closest any opponent came all week. In the second set, the Knights won 25-11 and wrapped up the sweep with a 25-18 win. De La Torre registered 13 kills while Bossman served up five more aces. It was Givens with an astounding six blocks and Vogel leading the team with four digs. “Elliot De La Torre plays middle and also plays the opposite position,” Vogel explained. “He has handled those positions ever since he was a sophomore. I feel comfortable putting

him in either position. He is getting more and more minutes.” De La Torre and Givens each had nine kills in the Township match on Thursday at home. Hunt had a sensational night with 34 assists. “Every set, our offense was clicking,” said Vogel. “Almost every touch we had, we had a kill. It was coming from the middles. Every time Colsen was setting the ball, he was setting it to the right people. “Colsen is a very good player,” continued the coach. “He was a setter in one of the rotations as a freshman. He was a backup setter last year and he would also hit outside. He has plenty of experience.” The Knights won the first set 25-4 and went on to win 25-13 and 25-14. Owen Hanzelman had eight digs. Hunt and Adam Gallagher notched one block each while Crabtree served three aces. “When you think about that, we were not making many errors,” Vogel said of the big margins of victory. “Everything clicks some nights. “You execute and hopefully go home happy most of the time,” he added. Vogel praised his relatively young

squad’s work ethic. “The kids really work hard. That isn’t something you have with every group of kids,” said Vogel. They realize you have to work at it in order to get better. You instill that work ethic.” GIRLS’ LACROSSE The Hempfield girls’ lacrosse team scored 22 goals at Conestoga Valley and 20 against Ephrata three days later in two decisive L-L League wins, improving to 8-0 in the league (12-1 overall). Monday’s match included a 14-goal first half as the Knights topped the Buckskins 22-6. Lizzie Yurchak led all scorers with eight goals and three assists. Lindsey Durkota (3a) and Kelsea Dague each poured in four goals. Regan Gillisse also had a multi-goal game, scoring twice. Lauren Dague, who had four assists, Brynn Axe, Kayla Brooks, Maureen Krauser and Laura Morrison each netted one goal on a 27-shot afternoon by the offense. Cassidy Roark and Kyah Peifer each grabbed one save for the Knights. Yurchak and Durkota accounted for half of the goals (five each) in the 20-2 trouncing of Ephrata. Durkota also had

four assists while Yurchak dished out two. Gillisse had a hat trick and Kelsea Dague added two goals and an assist. Brooks scored one. Lauren Dague tied for the team lead in assists with four. Morrison assisted on three. In goal it was Peifer grabbing three saves and Roark one. TENNIS In a regular-season finale, it was a Section One showdown between Cedar Crest and Hempfield on Tuesday. The Falcons topped the Knights 5-2 at Landisville to eclipse the Black Knights in the standings. Crest raised its record to 6-0 while Hempfield fell to 5-1 (8-6 overall). Alex Cooke and Adeet Parikh won the number two doubles 8-2. In the third singles match, Nolan Deck won in straight sets 6-0, 6-2. Cooke came close at number four singles but lost 6-4. The Knights were coming off a 7-0 victory at McCaskey on Monday. Nishant Balepur and Dillon Otto battled their way to a 9-7 win at number one doubles. The bats came alive again, however, in a Thursday night game at Ephrata where the Knights went on to win 11-1. Hempfield scored three in the top of the first and added one in the fourth to give starter Ty Vaughn some run support. The Knights went on to

score six runs in the top of the sixth, making the game end one inning early for the 10-run rule. The Knights loaded the bases with nobody out in the first. An error and Justin Lichtenwalner’s RBI single made it 2-0 before Alec Santiago waited for his pitch to lift a sacrifice fly RBI. Santiago had an RBI single later in the game. Lichtenwalner’s two-run home run was one of the highlights in a six-run sixth. Matt Drenchko came through with yet another sacrifice fly for the timely-hitting Hempfield lineup. SOFTBALL The Black Knights split their two L-L League games of the week and remained tied with Manheim Township for second place in the Section One standings. Hempfield fell to 7-3 in the L-L League (8-3 overall) following Wednesday’s 7-6 loss at home to Lampeter-Strasburg. Bella Ranking slugged a solo home run as she went 2-for-4 with two runs in the Knights’ leadoff spot.

April 24, 2019 - 5

Starting pitcher Gabi Turner went 2-for-4 with two runs and Anastasia Berardi went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Cara Mahoney (1-for-4) also came through with a RBI and one run. In Monday’s game at home, the Knights scored 13 times in the bottom of the first and went on to defeat Ephrata 19-2 in a game shortened to three innings due to the mercy rule. The 17 hits included three by Rankin, who homered and drove in two runs. Turner had a triple and two home runs, driving in six. Other extra-base hits included triples from juniors Myah Mojica and Ayasha Raihl and a double by Mahoney. Mojica and Skylar Constable both went 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI’s. Raihl and Rankin (3-for3, 3 runs scored) each drove two runs. Turner pitched three innings, struck out five and allowed only one unearned run on one base hit.

The World War II Oral History Club will welcome speaker Glen Morgan to its meeting on Tuesday, April 30, at 7 p.m. at St. Anne’s Retirement Community, 3952 Columbia Ave., Columbia. Morgan was a radio operator who served in the European Theater during World War II. Morgan served with the 38th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron from 1943 to 1945 as the radio operator of an M8 Greyhound armored car. He served near Saint Lo, France, and also served in Belgium. When his squadron headed toward Germany, Morgan was badly injured and spent five months in a hospital in England. Morgan will be celebrating his 101st birthday this month. The World War II Oral History Club meets on the last Tuesday of the month (except for December) at St. Anne’s Retirement Community. All World War II veterans and family members and anyone who is interested in World War II are invited to attend. The club also welcomes World War II veterans, family members, and friends who would like to share their experiences with the club at one of the meetings. For more information, readers may call 717-319-3430.

The first weekend in May will be a busy one at Washington Boro United Methodist Church (WBUMC), 1964 Water St., Washington Boro. A Spring Fling event will be held on Saturday, May 4, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and members of the Motorcycles for Jesus Ministry (MJM) will lead the worship service at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 5. The public is invited to participate in both events. The Spring Fling has been organized by the members of the missions and nurture support committee of the church, which includes Petra King, Tabetha Young, Kay Ott, Lori Gee, and pastor Carlene Wolf. The event will be held rain or shine and will feature vendors selling crafts and direct sales products. The church will have a flower stand, where geraniums and hanging baskets will be available for purchase.

“When we had the garden sale, that’s what everyone wanted,” Tabetha reported after a conversation with her motherin-law, Rita “Johnny” Young. Rita had helped to coordinate the garden sale, which had been a fundraiser for the construction of WBUMC’s fellowship hall, and she will be overseeing the flowers for the Spring Fling. A children’s area will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Youngsters may engage in a variety of games and activities, and they may win prizes. Committee members will sell food and beverages during the event. They will offer egg sandwiches and coffee for breakfast and later fire up the grill and fryer to make burgers, hot dogs, grilled cheese sandwiches, tater tots, and french fries. Fresh fruit and baked goods will also be available. “I call these ladies the best cooks in Washington Boro, and so far, no one has

objected to it,” Wolf commented. The proceeds from Spring Fling will be used by the missions and nurture support committee to support WBUMC’s outreach. The church contributes to a wide range of local and international organizations and causes, with donations totaling about $3,400 per year. “Our actual mission dollars that we send is not very much because we also do a number of free community meals, and (we) support our youth programs,” Wolf explained. MJM is well represented at WBUMC, with several church members having joined the outreach organization. Wolf related that MJM members will share their testimonies and offer special music, and one of them will give the message on May 5. A luncheon will be served following the service. Sunday school will precede the service at 9:15 a.m. Wolf noted that she likes to share the

Banzhof replied, “Let’s try.” That was earlier this year. The two have co-founded the Lancaster County Nurse Honor Guard (LCNHG) by setting a tentative framework in place. Before making anything final, however, they would like to have the input of current or retired nurses registered (RN) or licensed practical (LPN) in good standing. Sweigart and Banzhof will host an organizational meeting at Lyndon City Line Diner, 1370 Manheim Pike, Lancaster, at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, May 6. “Incidentally, that happens to be Nurses’ Day,” Banzhof pointed out. During the meeting, Banzhof will give a presentation about the purpose of the guard and how it will be utilized, as well as what she and Sweigart have come up with to carry out its function. “We have some thoughts, but we’re open to input from more people,” Sweigart remarked. Banzhof and Sweigart have patterned the LCNHG off a similar organization in Michigan. They noted that the guard in that state is active and a good resource for guards in other states. The idea behind the LCNHG is that just as nurses served within a community during life, they should be honored by their

colleagues at their death. Based on what they have seen other guards do, Sweigart and Banzhof have created a short ritual of remembrance that may be used at funerals or memorial services. They imagine a group of three or four LCNHG members wearing white uniforms and red-lined blue capes conducting a tribute that will include the reading of a poem, the chiming of a bell to signal the release from duty, and the presentation of a white rose. Once finalized, information about the tribute and the LCNHG will be distributed to all the funeral directors in Lancaster County. The services can be individualized depending on the deceased’s family’s wishes. The LCNHG will help families create tables of remembrance to represent late nurses’ careers. To be successful, the LCNHG will need a commitment from several dozen people. Individuals will need to be able to cover morning, afternoon, or evening services on weekdays and weekends. There will be no cost for the tribute service. “We are recognizing the sacrifice the family made by the person being a nurse,” Sweigart said. The women noted that with the

numerous retirement homes and the presence of several nursing schools, the population of current or former nurses in Lancaster County is quite high. Thus, they believe it makes sense to form an honor guard. Thankfully, interest in the guard has been relatively high, with just over 30 people having indicated that they plan to attend the meeting. Additional folks are welcome and should register by emailing lancastercountynursehonorguard@gmail. com. Those who are unable to attend the meeting but are interested in the guard may send an email to request ongoing updates on the organization. The organizers anticipate meeting again in two months, with hope to have the guard up and running by the beginning of September. There will be costs associated with the guard. Members must provide their own white uniform, but the LCNHG will purchase capes that will be shared among the members, as well as flowers, chimes, and lanterns for the displays. Sponsorships are available to cover the guard’s costs, which will eventually include the fee to apply for nonprofit status. To learn more, folks may send an email to the aforementioned address.

“Still Life at Mount Bethel,” an exhibit of artwork by the late Rosemary Horn Robinson, will be offered at the Mount Bethel Cemetery cottage, 700 Locust St., Columbia, on Friday, April 26, from 5 to 8 p.m. and again on Sunday, April 28, from 2 to 4 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be available. Robinson was born on June 22, 1927, and raised in Columbia. She attended Holy Trinity School and graduated from Columbia High School in 1945. She was a home economics major at Immaculata College. Her first job after graduating in 1949 was in the advertising department

at Watt & Shand. After a few years, she continued her career in commercial advertising with Apollo Advertising in York. She remained at the company until 1968. Commercial art in the 1950s and ’60s involved all hand drawing, including the lettering. Pencil sketches were made on tracing paper as the ad was being developed, and acrylic painting or colored pencil drawing were used for the finished art. One of Robinson’s favorite annual projects at Apollo Advertising was the Christmas toy catalog cover. She won a national award for her 1967 Christmas cover.

Outside of work, Robinson painted for personal enjoyment using oils and watercolors as well as colored pencils. She took oil painting classes from local artist Henry Libhart. She painted both still lifes and landscapes. In the 1970s, she taught art at St. Joseph’s Academy and Holy Trinity School. She often found time to continue painting and drawing. She was active in her church and community throughout her life. She always utilized her creative talent, whether designing stage sets for Columbia School of Ballet or creating posters for the Columbia Hospital Auxiliary fundraisers.

Funk’s Riverview Greenhouses Sets Grand Reopening markets. As is often the case in farming families, the brothers’ wives also helped along with Roy and Mildred’s more than 30 grandchildren. One of those brothers, LeRoy, married Jeanette, and in the mid-1960s, they built a greenhouse on their farm, which was the start of Funk’s Riverview Greenhouses. That first structure was used to grow tomatoes for sale in May and June. Later, the greenhouse was used to start tomato plants for replanting outside. It was during this time that the Funks also used the upper area of the greenhouse to grow flowering hanging baskets to sell at markets. Throughout the 1980s and ’90s, the balance shifted from tomatoes to flowers. To meet the need for more ornamentals, a second greenhouse was built to accommodate 6,000 geranium plants and 200 additional hanging baskets. Since the mid-’90s, LeRoy’s son Dan; Dan’s wife, Janelle; and their children have continued growing the greenhouse business. Funk’s now offers ornamental and vegetable plants as well as a selection of fruit trees, landscape shrubs, and other trees. “Our family business has been blessed by God,” Dan said. “It’s been a great experience having our four children grow up helping in the business.” On Saturdays during April and May, customers will often see Dan and Janelle’s children, including Brad, Amanda, and Eric, along with Eric’s wife Kristen, in the greenhouses. Breanne’s knowledge has impressed shoppers, who often say, “We want to see the girl who knows so much about the plants.” Breanne has learned about vegetable plants because she also plants the adjacent fields full of the same species that customers buy. She then sells her crops at the greenhouse and her roadside stand. In addition to Breanne, another popular person at Funk’s Riverview Greenhouses is Grandpa LeRoy, who is now in his 95th year. He will often be sitting outside, ready to chat or help water the plants.

“But watch out,” Dan said with a laugh. “He is still a salesman. He’ll try to sell you one more flower than you actually came for.” Janelle keeps social media users updated on Facebook, and she helps in the greenhouses when needed. Other relatives and local teenagers also work at Funk’s. In 2018, Dan realized it was time to update the original greenhouse, so in June, old structures began disappearing to make way for the brand-new 6,000square-foot, gutter-connect-style greenhouse. While the new greenhouse can accommodate more people and products, the Funks did not create more parking. “Our desire (is) not to trade the good Washington Boro soil (for) blacktop,” Dan said. “God has blessed this area of the country with great soil and a wonderful climate. Because of that, home gardeners can enjoy success in vegetable and flower planting. Each year, more and more customers keep coming back to choose from our wide selections of flower, vegetable, and fruit plants.” During February, March, and April, the Funk family prepares 50 varieties of tomatoes as well as 25 pepper varieties, hundreds of herbs and succulents,

5,000 geraniums, 1,700 hanging baskets, 15,000 Proven Winner and other potted plants, perennials, and about 10,000 flower and vegetable market packs for sale. Then, in May, they break out the ice cream. During the month of May, the Funks offer free ice cream cones. The tradition began years ago when Dan told his children not to eat their snacks in front of customers, so the family decided they would share with the customers. Some days also feature a cornhole challenge. “If the kids beat Mr. Dan, they get a free plant,” Dan said, noting that he usually lets them win. The business continues during the summer and fall with a roadside produce stand. Folks are invited to visit the grand reopening on April 27, and they may return in April on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The business is closed on Sundays. In May, the business is open until 8 p.m. on weekdays and until 6 p.m. on Saturdays. For more information, readers may call the Funks at 717-872-4842, visit www.funksriverviewgreenhouse.com or find “Funk’s Riverview Greenhouses” on Facebook.

Funk’s Riverview Greenhouses, 2277 River Road, Washington Boro, will hold a grand reopening on Saturday, April 27, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. to celebrate the addition of a new 6,000-square-foot, high-tech, temperature-controlled greenhouse to the seasonal business. To add to the festivities on April 27, Brian’s Barbeque will sell meals while supplies last. Door prizes will be awarded, and Funk’s will pay each customer’s sales tax. Customers are welcome to visit each of the five greenhouses on the property. The newest structure offers a close-up view of the Susquehanna River, which runs only 100 yards away. The sides of the greenhouse open not only for the views, but also for air flow and direct sunlight. This new structure has enabled the Funk family to grow higher-quality plants using natural ventilation, better lighting, and a more consistent temperature, and it aims to enhance customer experience through wider walkways and improved views. “Because of the faithful patronage of our customers, we continue to enhance our nursery. It’s been a busy year remodeling, but we’re very excited with the results,” said owner Dan Funk. Dan’s daughter Breanne, who performs most of the daily work, said she enjoys reconnecting with yearly customers and meeting new ones. She added, “I love this time of year: sowing seeds, planting all the different plants, working in my garden, and seeing everything grow.” The strong, family-connected Funk enterprise started many years ago, before there was a greenhouse. Roy Funk was born in 1896. As a young man, he married Mildred Shultz from Washington Boro, and together, they raised nine sons. When the boys grew up, they operated a diversified farming operation. Later, some of the brothers began an excavation business and the others continued to raise crops, turkeys, and produce, selling their products in farmers

During Smith’s senior year, he and a friend choreographed a dance piece, and after graduation, Smith was hired as a choreographer for Dance Theatre. He has worked professionally as a dancer and actor. “If I wouldn’t have gone to Hempfield and (been) exposed to the exceptional programming it offered in the arts, I never would have found the passion for it. I probably never would have danced, and I would definitely not have considered that I could make a career of it,” Smith remarked. “I want students to have the same opportunities that I had. Although Dance Theatre has never been (primarily intended as) a training ground for future dancers, it has inspired generations of students to be passionate arts supporters and overall more confident, kind, and hard-working people.” More than 120 students are typically part of the cast every year. This year’s principal dancers include seniors Dean Chasser, Illsa Chasser, Maggie Doehring, Meghan Kosmela, Rachel Male, Alaina Simmons, and Katie White; juniors Megan Landes and Bela Schwalm; and sophomores Paige Gruber, Lorisa Shafer, Mackenzie Toole, and Lily Wernoch.
