Fire Company Plans Mountville Days Carnival By Dayna M. Reidenouer

“ We’re one of the few carnivals left in Lancaster County,” said Mountville Days committee chair Bryan Duquin Jr. In contrast to the other events that petered out, the Mountville Days carnival is growing and improving, he said, adding, “We have new vendors. We’re trying to bring in more local family-owned businesses.” “We had no fireworks last year, but they’re back this year, and it’ll be our biggest display ever,” said Mountville Fire Company deputy chief Andrew Kalbach. Folks who watch the fireworks, which will be set off on Friday, May 17, beginning

around 8:30 p.m., will hopefully notice a difference. Duquin noted that the fire company hired a different group to handle the fireworks, and that business uses a computerdriven deployment system. Folks may bring chairs or blankets to sit and watch the fireworks. Saturday, May 18, has been set as the rain date. The fireworks are just one aspect of Mountville Days, which is an annual event run by the Mountville Fire Company. It is held at Froelich Park, 350 W. Main St., Mountville. This year’s event will take place on Wednesday and Thursday, May 15 and 16, from 6 to 9 p.m., as well as on May 17 and 18 from 5 to 11 p.m. There See Mountville Days pg 4

Church Slates Plant Sale St. Paul Lutheran Church, 222 N. George St., Millersville, will hold its fifth annual Spring Plant Sale on Saturday, May 11, from 9 a.m. to noon. Annuals, vegetables and herbs will be available for purchase. Separate fees have been set for Gerber daisies; for geraniums and other packs of six annuals; for herbs, tomato plants, and pepper plants; and for zucchini, eggplant, and cucumber plants. Proceeds from this sale will again benefit the New Life Children’s Home, a ministry of New Life Mission - Haiti Inc. St. Paul continues to support this

mission and will use its Global Mission Fund to match proceeds from the plant sale. New Life Children’s Home is an orphanage located in the small village of Charrier, L’artibonite, Haiti. The orphanage offers a School Sponsorship Program that unites underprivileged Haitian children with sponsors to fund the children’s education. Haitian families must pay to send their children to school, but many families cannot do so because of poor economic conditions and a lack of jobs. The cost of $300 per year includes uniforms, books and tuition. New Life Children’s Home

Wally Calderon is overseeing the Servant Stage production of “Jump, Jive, and Jukebox!” with enthusiasm and energy. Not only is Calderon directing the nearly 30-member cast of teenagers, but he is the choreographer and the person who chose the 20 musical numbers that span the decades from the 1950s to the present and cover genres from rock to pop to Broadway with a special emphasis on the music of the 1980s thrown in. Perhaps, however, Calderon’s most crucial role is that of teacher. “I teach these students how to put all their gifts and talents together,” noted Calderon. “It’s a huge reward to see (students) learn to be supportive of one another … and to see each student rise to the challenge.” Servant Stage’s newest show will be performed in the Good Shepherd Chapel at Lancaster Bible College, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, May 18, and Sunday, May 19, at 3 and 7 p.m. each day. The show has also been slated to be performed during May at several area retirement communities, including Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community, Garden Spot Village, Luther Acres, and Calvary Fellowship Homes. More than 80 students tried out to be part of the Servant Stage 2019 season, and Calderon believes the turnout was due to the many young people who were interested in the musical revue that he named “Jump, Jive, and Jukebox!” “It’s a revue of anything you would want to hear when you put your quarter in the jukebox,” explained Calderon. “There’s a lot of variation,” he stated, adding that “Wild Thing,” “Footloose,” and “Do You Love Me?” will be included, along with songs by New Kids on the Block and music from the Broadway hit “Hamilton.” Calderon endeavors to add depth to each number to give audiences more than song and dance. “We find little stories within each song,” he said. “It’s acting first. The song was written for a reason, so let’s try to tell a story within one song.” The intensive rehearsal process gave the cast members only a week to become familiar with the songs in the show before beginning rehearsals on March 24. “We meet each person where they are and push them a little farther in their training,” said Calderon. “The talent is incredible, and I am just thrilled at what they have been able to accomplish in such a short time.” Students who are taking part in the show are responding to the technique. “I grew up doing dance and theater separately,” said Mackenzie Neff. “Getting to do theater with dancing is kind of a dream. It helps all of us stretch ourselves.” “It’s really challenging,” noted Sydney Norgaard, who wanted to take part in the show after seeing her brother, Brayden, perform in last year’s revue. “Once we’re able to (perform) the

who cannot come to the theater. Under Calderon’s direction, the students have become acutely aware of how audiences respond to them. “You have to learn how to adapt how you’re interacting to reach every audience,” explained Isabel Subacz, who serves as dance captain for the show. Brayden agreed, saying, “It’s so fun to see the audience’s faces light up when they recognize the music and sing along.” Performances are open to the public on a pay-what-you-will

number, it is satisfying. Teamwork plays a role in that.” Mackenzie is enjoying watching that process unfold as opening night approaches. “It’s overwhelming to see all the talent coming together creating this,” she said. “Watching everyone come together as a team supporting and challenging each other makes us more independent as performers.” Kolby Colmary, a veteran of several Servant Stage shows, noted that he loves that the show goes to nursing homes to reach people

The Alzheimer’s Association funds research into the disease, and it also offers support groups for people with the disease and for their caregivers, provides online message boards through ALZConnected, and hosts a free, nationwide helpline that offers information and referrals. The Grand Purple Gala was created by Julie Ehrgood and Frazier, both of whom have family members with Alzheimer’s. They were joined by additional women whom the disease has affected in some way. Frazier’s personal experience with Alzheimer’s came from her grandfather and her work as a nurse in memory care facilities. “I wanted to do something that had an impact, Frazier said. “I did a lot of education with families. It’s an exhausting disease. Relating an incident during which her grandfather slipped out of the house tremendously underdressed for the cold weather, she

When memory loss disrupts everyday life, however, that is indicative that Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia may be developing. A decline in thinking and reasoning skills is also a red flag, and folks should see their doctor. Group member Mary Read has dubbed herself an Alzheimer’s ambassador, as she has been dealing with the early onset of these symptoms. Frazier noted that the disease is such that the diagnosis cannot be confirmed until after death. Say the word “gala and visions of triple-digit ticket prices might come to mind. Tickets for the Grand Purple Gala set for Saturday, May 18, however, are priced in the mid-double-digits, thanks to corporate and individual sponsors. “ We want it to be affordable, said gala president Coleen Frazier. “We want caregivers to be there too. Folks who buy tickets will be admitted to the gala, which has the theme “Spring Into the Light this year. The event will begin at 6 p.m. and will be held at the Cultural Center at Willow Valley Communities, 900 Willow Valley Lakes Drive, Willow Street. The dress code is spring semiformal, and only folks age 21 or older will be admitted. Guests may visit food stations, where they may partake of wings, empanadas, meatballs, charcuterie, a version of cheesesteaks, scones, cupcakes, chocolate-covered strawberries, and more. Some beverages will be included, and others may be purchased separately.

Two Pints Shy, a power folk band that strives to be fun and energetic, will perform music for dancing. The group plays covers from six decades as well as some originals. A silent auction will run during the event. Trips to a themed amusement park in Florida, Las Vegas, and New York will be up for bids. Other items in the auction will include a firepit filled with goodies, themed baskets, certificates for lunches with government officials, golf and spa packages, a Penn State University-themed cornhole game, Lancaster Barnstormers swag and VIP packages, a pilot lesson, and more. Bids will also be accepted for hours of care provided by a licensed professional caregiving business. Additionally, there will be opportunities to enter a prize drawing. The proceeds from the Grand Purple Gala will benefit the Alzheimer’s Association by way of the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. The local event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 28, at Overlook Park, 605 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster. The tagline of the signature

“Moms’ Day Out” Will Benefit PMEF Initiative The vendor and craft fair that the Penn Manor Education Foundation (PMEF) will host on Saturday, May 11, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. is named Moms’ Day Out, but everyone is welcome to attend. “If you don’t have anything for a mom yet (for Mother’s Day), come out,” invited PMEF executive director Jan Mindish. “Or shop for yourself,” added event chair and PMEF board member Robin Jeffers. “You don’t have to be a mom to find something here.” The vendors at Moms’ Day Out are community members as well as current and past Penn Manor School District students and parents. Jeffers said that she expects between 25 and 30 vendors to participate. They will sell jewelry, makeup, skin care products, woodcrafts, art, candles, potted succulents, honey-based products, clothing and accessories, purses and other bags, cleaning products, books, essential oils, and food- and nutritionrelated products. There will be opportunities to win prizes donated by the vendors and other local businesses. A concession stand will offer

soups, deli salads, baked goods, and beverages. Moms’ Day Out will be held in a new location this year. The gymnasium at St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church, 2111 Millersville Pike, Lancaster, will be the site of the event. The front entrance is handicapped-accessible. Those who enter from the rear parking lot will have to descend a flight of stairs to reach the gymnasium. Jeffers noted that the event was moved to the church for proximity. “It’s more central to the district (than the previous venue),” she explained. St. Philip the Apostle is located at a busy intersection, so the organizers hope to attract more attendees. “I think we’ll make a little more this year because we’ll be more visible,” Mindish predicted. Last year’s Moms’ Day Out generated about $1,300 for the PMEF’s Strong and Healthy Families initiative, which provides grants to help community members facing financial, physical, and emotional difficulties. Jeffers explained that a committee of champions made up of staff members who represent different areas in the district apply to the foundation for grants that

are then distributed throughout the district schools as needed. “We ask on a broader basis, where are kids falling through the cracks? We want to level the playing field,” Mindish explained. “We can plug those holes.” Grants have covered the cost of Advanced Placement and other testing services, Career and Technology Center uniforms and program costs, elementary literacy outreach, credit recovery classes for students who have moved into the district, and mental health screenings for all freshmen through Samaritan Counseling Services. “We were the first school (in Lancaster County) to offer screenings, and now they’re screening in 15 districts,” Mindish remarked. Mindish noted that the initiative has awarded a new grant to purchase caps and gowns in a range of sizes for use at future commencements. Students who do not have the ceremonial garb are not permitted to participate in the graduation ceremony, and the initiative directors want to ensure that financial need does not bar students from participating in that special event. On Thursday, May 16, the Lititz Farmers Market, which moved to Lititz Springs Park last year, will open for the 2019 season. As in 2018, the market will be situated just inside the park gates at 24 N. Broad St., Lititz, along the water near the visitors’ center, but on the same side as the Veterans of Foreign Wars building. This year, the market will be open each Thursday from 4:30 until 8 p.m. from midMay through Oct. 17. The market will be open rain or shine. Vendors that DeKarske has lined up for this year’s market include those selling seafood; vegetables; fruit and flowers; organic meat, including poultry, beef, and pork; and certified organic vegetables. In addition, there will be a gluten-free baker, a vendor selling honey and maple syrup, and a hummus company offering a variety of flavors of hummus and dips, along with a vendor selling fermented vegetables, pickled carrots, and more. DeKarske also hopes to have a vendor selling

She also plans to have prepared foods sold by food trucks and vendors, and she hopes local retailers will come to the market to talk about their own businesses and the benefits of visiting Lititz. Along with more market vendors, DeKarske is looking for pop-up vendors to bring their handcrafted or other items to the venue on a limited basis. “(Vendors) could come once to be a pop-up,” she said. “That will give (the market) some rotation.” DeKarske said that she works with a board to oversee the market, but she is still looking for a market master to take care of weekly needs. In addition to a market master, DeKarske would like to see more volunteers join in at the market each week. “We could use … people who want to talk about Lititz and the market and just be friendly,” she said, noting that people who love Lititz would be welcome to represent Venture Lititz at its booth. Manor FFA To Host Car Show By Dayna M. Reidenouer

The Manor FFA chapter at Penn Manor High School will host its annual car show on Saturday, May 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Comet Field, Millersville Road, Lancaster. Registration will be open from 9 to 10:30 a.m., and prizes will be awarded at about 1:30 p.m. In the event of rain, the car show will be postponed until Saturday, May 18. Folks may check the Manor FFA Facebook page for updates. The car show has typically featured 10 categories of vehicles. This year, the event will welcome antique, classic, and current cars and trucks, as well as semi-trucks and Jeeps. The car show committee members noted that the tractor category had only one entrant last year, so it was discontinued, and the off-road vehicle category was changed to Jeep-only. A variety of prizes will be awarded, and the winners will be

based on popular vote. There will also be opportunities to enter prize drawings. The committee members are still collecting items to be given away, but they noted that a luxury vehicle dealership has donated a tote bag filled with goodies and another donor has contributed a car care kit. There is a cost to enter a vehicle in the show, but exhibitors who bring nonperishable food items will receive a discount on the entrance fee. Both the money and the food will be donated to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. Spectators may attend free of charge. “We had more than 100 vehicles, and we raised almost $4,000 for the food bank last year,” reported committee chair Alyssa Chalfant. Chapter members have been hard at work since September planning the car show. They successfully applied for a grant from the Pennsylvania FFA Association,

and the infusion of funds enabled the committee to purchase needed supplies and order event T-shirts for the first time. A limited number of T-shirts will be available for purchase at the car show. The chapter will also operate a concession stand, where it will sell burgers, hot dogs, macaroni and cheese, baked goods, and beverages. The Manor FFA Alumni Association will sell chicken barbecue. The proceeds from the concession stand and the sale of T-shirts will benefit chapter activities, such as sending FFA members to attend state and national conventions and other educational events. The committee reported that approximately 25 students will compete in teams and several individuals will participate as delegates or state officer candidates at the State FFA Convention at Penn State University

in June. Typically, the chapter pays for some of the costs, and the individual members pay for the rest, Chalfant said. Interest in planning for the car show has increased significantly, going from a committee of only three last year to more than 20 this year. Some folks were in charge of writing sponsor letters, while others worked on ordering T-shirts and redesigning the layout of the event. “We’re trying to expand and make it better,” committee member Cody Hurlburt said. All the committee members are slated to wear mint green staff T-shirts at the event, and folks who need assistance may query any of the staffers. Although it is too late for business and individual names to be included on the event T-shirts, sponsorships for the event are still available. Those who would like more information may email Alyssa at achalfant5@gmail.com.

Manor FFA members (from left) Cody Hurlburt, Alyssa Broderick, Ben Raifsnider, Alyssa Chalfant, and Madeleine Denlinger have helped to plan the chapter’s annual car show, which will be held at Comet Field on May 11.

Arts And Craft Show from pg 1 price point,” Hobday added. “There are a lot of new (exhibitors) coming, and it’s almost fifty-fifty with arts and crafts,” noted Hobday. Some of the artists and crafters will be traveling from outside the central Pennsylvania region to participate in the show, but Hobday emphasized that they all feature handmade work. Showcasing original work rather than reproductions has been of the utmost importance to Hobday for the fall show as well, which has been held for 31 years and counting. Plenty of food and beverage options will be available for folks to purchase throughout the grounds of Root’s as well. Adding a spring show has certainly come with its challenges,

but Hobday is optimistic that the new event will fill a void in Lancaster and hopefully be a hit with the community. “A lot of the spring shows that had been happening aren’t anymore,” she explained. “I’m hoping people will come and like it. We’ve just gotten a lot more artwork than I expected for it being the first spring show.” Promoting the importance of art to the community is a priority for Hobday, who is a watercolor artist herself. She also taught art at Hempfield High School for 25 years. The fall Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show has grown into a two-day event and earned a ranking as one of the Top 200 Best Shows in the Country from Sunshine Artist magazine.

The 32nd annual fall Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show is set to take place on Saturday, Aug. 31, and Sunday, Sept. 1. For more information about the Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show, readers may visit www.hlcshow.com.

Hempfield Volleyball Holds off Warwick by Ara Grigorian

The Warwick boys’ volleyball team had defeated Section One rival Hempfield on April 4, handing the Black Knights their first LancasterLebanon League loss of the season. When the two teams met for a second time on Tuesday, the Warriors were still unbeaten and Hempfield was carrying an 8-1 league record. The Warriors learned that nobody puts Hempfield in the corner. Playing on their home court, the Knights came out and posted three straight winning sets, all by very close margins - 25-22, 25-23, and 26-24. “It was a phenomenal match between two quality teams,” Hempfield head coach Mike Vogel remarked. “It could have gone either way. Both teams are very good. “I’m glad we had the opportunity to play them again and to beat them this time around,” he added. With two regular season matches left on both teams’ schedules, the Knights were slated to play McCaskey and Cedar Crest - two teams with a

combined record of 5-17 - while the Warriors had Conestoga Valley (5-5) and Penn Manor (7-3) remaining The possibility of both Hempfield and Warwick running the table remains, thus setting up a playoff match for the section title on Thursday, May 9. “It will determine if we finish first in our section,” Vogel explained. “We put ourselves in position to play them again.” Gauging the competition for the final matches of both his squad and Warwick, Vogel added, “Penn Manor is good and they’ve beaten Warwick in the past. Anything can happen. But Warwick should win that and the section is ready to have us face them for the championship. It will be one playoff match at a neutral site, which will be Elizabethtown.” Of course, looking past the regular season and the section playoff match, there is the possibility of facing the Warriors again in the L-L League playoffs as well as District Three Class AAA post-season play. Incidentally, Warwick is fourth and Hempfield fifth

in the district’s power rankings. “Not to get far ahead, but obviously we’re going to play them again in leagues and possibly districts,” Vogel stated. As for the match itself, it was as close as the scores indicated. “We were probably in control of the first game, but we didn’t have a big lead at any time,” said Vogel. “We got two quick points at the end. “In the second game, we were in better control and had a five-point lead, which evaporated,” continued the coach. “We would take a lead and they would catch up. But we hung on to win. “Identical to the second game, they caught us in the third game,” he added. “Owen Hanzelman, who had a phenomenal match, aced them on match point.” Hanzelman led the team in aces with four. Ben Crabtree served up three aces. Colsen Hunt led in assists with 33. Elliot De La Torre registered a match-high three blocks. Ryan Givens tied Foster Lobb and Chad Meeder of Warwick for the top

total in kills with 11 on the night. “Ben Crabtree and Owen Hanzelman served very well,” said Vogel. “Offensively, Owen Hanzelman had a hitting percentage of .400. He led the team there. “We don’t expect a lot of offense out of Hanzelman, but he does everything else well - the passing, court sense.” The Knights were coming off a non-league win at Dallastown the night before. They topped the Wildcats 25-9, 25-16, 25-15. Givens gave the Knights 11 kills to go with four blocks. De La Torre had two blocks and he poured in 11 kills while Hunt distributed 32 assists. Hanzelman added eight digs. Hempfield improved to 10-1 overall. “As a team we played great,” said Vogel. “Everyone played well. Dallastown is right on the bubble of making districts, so they’re a respectable opponent.” Asked about returning on Tuesday to face Warwick in such a meaningful match after a trip to Dallastown, Vogel replied, “We came off the State College tournament over the weekend

where we did well. So, we played there on Saturday and even though the kids had Sunday to recover, we turned around and played a critical match against Dallastown on the

road. Thank goodness Tuesday’s match was at home. “We had a packed house,” Vogel added. “The fans came out to see a great match on Tuesday night.”

MERCHANDISER - Hempfield Edition BASEBALL With the regular season winding down, the schedule wasn’t kind to the Black Knights. But with Justin Lichtenwalner pitching a six-hit shutout on Monday at Penn Manor and the Knights coming back from a late 6-2 deficit to win 7-6 on Tuesday, Hempfield went on to win all four games in five days. The Knights improved to 15-1 in the league (17-2 overall). The rest of the wins were a 5-3 victory at Warwick on Wednesday and a 9-2 defeat of McCaskey at home on Friday. Alec Santiago’s RBI single scored designated runner Jayden Ruby, running for Lichtenwalner in the fourth inning. It broke the scoreless tie at Penn Manor. Lichtenwalner’s RBI single scored Nick Fiore in the sixth inning. Santiago doubled to score Ruby and Ty Vaughn. Jacob Rissmiller added a fifth run on a sacrifice fly. The comeback against MT included heroics by Santiago, Kyle Jackson, Seth Constein’s bases-loaded sacrifice fly and Cole Houser’s bases-loaded double two batters later. Fiore drove in the game-winner. The offense in the Warwick game awoke in the fourth on a single by Lichtenwalner and double by Vaughn,

setting the stage for an RBI single for Christian LaBarbera. Santiago’s double drove in another run to make it 3-1. The Knights scored two more before having to hold Warwick’s comeback attempt in check. Lichtenwalner’s bases-loaded single in the McCaskey game scored Saylor and Houser, LaBarbera and Santiago came through with RBI’s to make it 5-1 after three innings. With three walks loading the bases in the sixth, Fiore drove in another run to help support the pitching of LaBarbera, Andrew Blough and Lichtenwalner. GIRLS’ LACROSSE The busy week for the girls’ lacrosse team included three matches in three days. The Black Knights lost a close 14-10 match to L-L League rival Manheim Township, doubled up Cumberland Valley at home on Monday and wrapped up the regular season with a 22-5 victory over Garden Spot, improving to 10-1 in the league (15-2 overall). The Streaks remained unbeaten at 11-0 by beating Hempfield as six different Streaks scored goals, including four by Lucy Svetec. Hempfield trailed 11-5 at the half and was unable to forge enough of a comeback in the second half.

Lindsey Durkota notched a hat trick for Hempfield. Lizzie Yurchak, who also recorded an assist, Lauren Dague and Kelse Dague each scored twice. Laura Morrison netted one goal. Kyah Peifer snagged five saves and Cassidy Roark grabbed one. Hempfield improved to 14-2 overall with the win against Cumberland Valley. It was a close 7-6 match at the half. However, the Knights scored six unanswered goals after the break. The two hat tricks were courtesy of Yurchak and Kelsea Dague. Other goals and assists came from Durkota (2, 1), Lauren Dague (2, 1), Regan Gillisse (2g) and Morrison (1g). Four saves by Peifer and three by Roark contributed to the win. The Knights out-shot the Eagles 27-13. The 36 shots on goal against Garden Spot included five goals and two assists each for Durkota and Yurchak. Lauren Dague also had two assists and scored twice. Jackson, Morrison, and Kelsea Dague also added two goals each. Gillisse (1, 1) chipped in as did Regan West, Madison Morabito and Kiley Yurchack with one goal each.

Brynn Axe and Kayla Brooks each registered one assist. Roark came away with four saves and Peifer had two. SOFTBALL Hempfield suffered a 12-5 loss to Penn Manor on Monday. It was the first of three straight Section One defeats on the week. The Knights wrapped up the week with a 15-0 win at McCaskey. The win raised their league record to 10-6 (12-6 overall). Against Manor, the Knights actually went ahead 4-2 and held that lead until the Comets tied it in the top of the fifth inning. A five-spot by the visitors in the sixth and Hempfield only being able to muster up one run in response meant a momentum swing in Penn Manor’s favor. Kendall Fruchti, who doubled and went 2-for-3, drove in two of Hempfield’s runs. Asaysha Raihl had a two-hit game, including a double, Shannon McDermott also doubled in a run. Anastasia Berardi singled and drove in one run. The loss at Manheim Township on Tuesday featured another five-run inning by the opposition. The Streaks

put up all of their runs in the home half of the fifth inning and went on to win 5-3. All five runs were unearned. Raihl went the distance and allowed only three hits and three walks while striking out eight. Gabi Turner went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Katie Bemesderfer also had two hits for Hempfield. Warwick starter Katelyn Minney tossed a two-hit shutout, striking out seven Knights in the Warriors’ 2- 0 win on Wednesday. Singles by Raihl and Turner were the only Hempfield hits. Berardi reached on a walk. Turner was the hard-luck losing pitcher in this one, going the distance in a quality start. She allowed seven singles as the Warriors scored one in the third and another in the fifth. Turner and Raihl each tossed two innings in the 15-0 win at McCaskey on Friday. It ended after four innings on the 10-run rule with Raihl earning the win. She struck out three. Turner came on in the third

and struck out five batters. Berardi slugged a solo home run and a double while Bella Rankin was 3-for-3, including a double, out of the leadoff spot. She scored three runs and drove in three - one of three batters with three RBI’s. The others were Turner and Skylar Constable, who also collected three base hits and scored three times. Fruchti went 2-for-4 with an RBI double. BOYS’ LACROSSE The boys’ team wrapped up the regular season with an 8-2 league mark, topping Elizabethtown on May 1 with Bobby Griffith and Kohl Wesner each earning a hat trick. Grayson Dague (2, 2) and Matt Heuston (1, 2) helped in the scoring. Jacob Notoli and Cameron Aksu each had a goal and an assist. Max Grube also had a goal while A.J. McAlpine and Ryan Heuston each dished out an assist. Matt Weist finished with 13 saves in goal.

St. John’s Episcopal Church, 239 E. Market St., Marietta, will present an organ recital on Sunday, May 12, at 3 p.m. by Dr. Karl E. Moyer. As such, the recital is designed to demonstrate as many of the organ’s capabilities as possible in one program. Four high school violin students, along with Moyer’s wife, Carolyn, will assist in three numbers: a concerto movement by Vivaldi, a song called “The Happy Farmer,” and the first movement of Bach’s Concerto for Two Violins in D minor, with two students playing each of the solo parts. The violinists will be Vincent Cao, Cecelia Nightingale, and Amaya Williams, all of Hempfield High School, and Naomi Main of McCaskey High School. Dark comedy and iconic music are some of the hallmarks of George Furth and Stephen Sondheim’s award-winning “Company,” which Susquehanna Stage Company (SSC) will bring to the stage of the Marietta Center for the Arts beginning on Friday, May 10, for its first musical of the 2019 season. The plot revolves around Bobby, a 35-year-old bachelor who finds himself unable to fully commit to a long-term relationship - despite having multiple girlfriends. Josh Schwartz, who will be making his SSC debut portraying Bobby, explained that his character instead gets to see the ins and outs of marriage through all of his married friends. “He seems to live vicariously through his friends over the course of the show,” Schwartz said. “Most of the time he views marriage through a negative lens.”

Schreiber Music Fest Planned Local bands Vinyl Groov, Ghost Light Radio Show, Little Buddy and MOE Blues will take the stage on Saturday, May 11, for the Schreiberpalooza Music Fest at Clair Brothers, 1 Clair Blvd., Manheim, from 5:30 to 11 p.m. The bands will be playing to support therapy services for children who reside in central Pennsylvania and have

disabilities or developmental delays. Schreiberpalooza admission tickets are available in advance for a set price, with a higher price on the night of the event. Tickets may be purchased at www.schreiberpediatric.org/ palooza. Proceeds from all food and beverage sales will be donated to Schreiber.

The original production, with book by Furth and music and lyrics by Sondheim, was nominated for numerous Tony Awards and won Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Score, Best Lyrics, Best Direction of a Musical, and Best Scenic Design. Director Jim Johnson noted that, when it opened in 1970, “Company” was groundbreaking as a musical for both its style and the way that it examined adult relationships. “It changed musical comedy in the way that it presented a nonlinear look at marriage for the first time on stage,” described Johnson. Instead of following the previously standard chronological storyline, “Company” is made up of vignettes linked together by Bobby’s birthday celebration. “It’s an examination of marriage - what works and what doesn’t,” Johnson said. “It’s a very thoughtful, provocative musical.” Four of the five married couples that are Bobby’s friends in the SSC show also happen to be portrayed by real-life couples - a fun twist that cast members believe will add extra depth and delight for audiences. “It brings sides of marriage to life that you don’t see in everyday theater,” noted Kent Gable, who will portray Paul alongside his wife, Beth Gable, as Amy. “It’s incredibly relatable for anybody who is married or was married or is thinking about getting married,” commented Kevin See “Company” pg 16
