“We’re partnering to get cats adopted,” Pet Pantry of Lancaster County executive director Melody Sanders said of her organization’s collaboration with Furever Home Adoption Center. “We put the animals first, and we try to figure out the rest afterward.” Until recently, that partnership has primarily involved working to ensure that rescued or surrendered cats receive the medical care and safe homes they need. Furever Home operates a feline sanctuary and adoption center at 5984 Main St., East Petersburg, while the Pet Pantry, headquartered at 26 Millersville Road, Lancaster, cares for cats and other animals, offers low-cost vaccinations and spay/neuter services, and supplies pet food for households experiencing financial distress. The Pet Pantry’s veterinarians have been able to
treat illnesses and injuries in cats taken in by Furever Home, and Furever Home has cared for felines accepted by the Pet Pantry that do better in a cage-free environment where they can socialize with other animals. The two organizations also share volunteers. Now, the Pet Pantry has signed on to help with hosting Furever Home’s fourth annual summer shopping fair. “This is a way for us to support (Furever Home),” Sanders said. “This shows our staff members and volunteers working together. The community needs to see organizations working together to better the lives of animals in Lancaster County.” The shopping fair will be held at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 21. The event will be open to the public free of charge, and well-contained pets will be See Shopping Fair pg 8

Susquehanna Stage Company Enjoying A Virtual Visit To To Bring Back “The Music Man” German-Speaking Countries Sommer Singspiel Camp Set For Aug. 6 To 9
By Chelsea Peifer
Meredith Willson’s “The Music Man” was the very first show produced by the Susquehanna Stage Company (SSC) in the summer of 2009. In honor of the theater company’s 10th season, it will be presenting the beloved musical once again. “It was a good show to start the company, and we’re repeating some of the famous things we did in the past,” noted director Jim Johnson. Eight cast members will repeat their roles from the first SSC production of “The Music Man,” including Mount Joy resident Sharon Boyer, who will portray Mrs. Paroo. “It was a lot easier to learn my lines. Remembering how I did it the last time is helping me now,” Sharon said. Playing Mrs. Paroo See “The Music Man” pg 6

Ministry Reaches Out With Visual Bible Lessons By Ann Mead Ash
On a corner in Akron, where Main Street and Route 272 intersect, a small building is home to Bible Visuals International (BVI). The organization, which was founded nearly 60 years ago by area resident Helen Odenwelder, meets needs around the world for visual teaching materials about God. Tom Luttmann, executive director of BVI, explained that the organization has endeavored to bring the Bible to children and adults in three ways. “We have visualized Bible lessons, which we are updating with a colorization process; visualized biographies of missionaries and other Christians from different eras; and visualized songs for children to sing and (take part in) worship together,” said Luttmann. BVI held its 59th anniversary banquet, with a gathering of nearly 300 attendees, on May 10. Tim Keesee, executive director with Frontline Missions International, served as keynote speaker. Frontline is an organization known for taking the Gospel into difficult
regions of the world. The choice of Keesee as speaker was appropriate, as BVI began when Odenwelder was directing Child Evangelism Fellowship outreaches and searching for a publishing ministry to supply the needs of local clubs. “(BVI) started supplying local needs for Bible clubs that were hosted in people’s backyards,” explained Luttmann. “It’s a ministry that grew in scope with Helen’s vision to supply materials not just locally but internationally.” Updating materials that were created some years ago has been an important goal for BVI. Luttmann explained how help in accomplishing that feat is being provided by Sam Gunti, who runs large Bible camps - reaching as many as 18,000 children in a camp - in India. BVI had worked with Gunti to translate and print materials for his gatherings, and Gunti decided to return the favor. During a visit to BVI a few years ago, Gunti brought a thumb drive of updated BVI materials in full color. “It would have cost us quite a bit (to update those materials, so Gunti’s gift) has provided a good foundation,” Luttmann noted. Locally, BVI has worked with Bible2School, a Manheim-based
mentorship program that offers free, weekly Bible elective classes for public school students in several Lancaster County school districts. “(Bible2School) is growing, and they needed more visuals to go with their curriculum,” said Luttmann. “It would be an expensive process (for Bible2School) to have new illustrations put together, (so) we looked through our curriculum and found visuals that would match their lessons.” Luttmann said BVI is in the process of transforming offerings to give more options to those who need them. “We have great resources, but they don’t have to be in just (one) format,” Luttmann said. “There’s a new generation of children and ministry workers who know more about technology, and they are looking for resources they can download or put on a tablet.” BVI is working to make resources available digitally and as downloads, and Luttmann is excited to see where the materials are being utilized. “There are huge opportunities in technology to get resources to ministry partners.” In addition to special licensing agreements that allow for the use of materials by others, Luttmann described another
opportunity that came through an online retailer that offers ondemand printing so that individuals in other countries can have copies of BVI materials printed closer to home. Gordon Denlinger, who serves as treasurer for the organization, called BVI a hidden gem and noted that volunteers are needed to serve the organization in a variety of capacities. “It doesn’t get any better than helping children see Jesus and come to know Him in a faith way,” he said. “We want to make sure the Gospel is being presented.” BVI, a nonprofit organization located at 650 Main St., Akron, is overseen by a nine-member board. Readers who would like to know more about the organization may visit www.biblevisuals.org or call 717-859-1131. Pictured on front: Thousands
gather at a Bible study held in India by Sam Gunti, a partner of Bible Visuals International (BVI), which is located in Akron. Gunti uses BVI materials, and his work is one example of how the ministry reaches out to spread the Gospel to all nations.

Tackling the role of Harold has been fun for Nick, who said that his character’s tendency to be a big dreamer is easy to relate to, but the con man aspect, not so much. “We have a large cast filled with a lot of good talent, and it’s a really good community show,” Nick shared. “It’s really special to be a part of.” Sharon echoed those thoughts, noting that the music throughout the duration of the production will have audiences captivated. “It’s just one of

again is a welcome task for Sharon, who described her character as a fun and opinionated person. Mrs. Paroo’s daughter, Marian, will be played by Stacia Smith of Harrisburg. Marian, a librarian, is among the town members who do not quite believe the story that is told by smooth-talking con man Harold Hill when he arrives in tightknit River City, Iowa, and attempts to convince them he is a talented bandleader. He sets out to recruit folks to form a band - only to pocket the cash he receives for instruments and uniforms. Harold Hill - the Music Man himself - will be portrayed by Nick Smith of Harrisburg. Harold’s problems escalate as he finds himself becoming attached to the townspeople and

each month. Distributions are held in Gap, Collegeville, and Lancaster, as well as at Water Street Mission. “ We’re trying to touch as many people as possible,” Sanders said, explaining the Pet Pantry’s geographic reach. Both the Pet Pantry and Furever Home exist through public support and private fundraising like the summer shopping fair. Volunteers are integral to the organizations’ operation. Krueger noted that Furever Home can use folks to clean
the adoption center or to attend networking events to provide education about the organization. Volunteers are also welcome to assist with the summer shopping fair, and sponsorships are available. Krueger invites folks with vendor, sponsorship, and volunteer inquiries to contact her at flippers1@aol.com or 717-808-8108. Sommer Singspiel from pg 1 and creating music to accompany their ‘journey’ across the German-speaking parts of Europe. Additionally, the campers will get the opportunity to create and play instruments from some nontraditional materials,” she explained. “It’s going to be a blast!” Sommer Singspiel, which in German means “play and sing in the summer,” is in its fourth year. The camp is an outgrowth of the Cultural Grant and Scholarship Fund of the Liederkranz, which aims to provide opportunities for students to experience German language and culture. In addition to music, the camp will focus on experiences with German language, authentic food, cultural traditions, and soccer and other outdoor games. A sharing showcase on the final afternoon will give students a venue in which to share their experiences with their friends and families. “It is going to be very much a
learn-by-doing camp, and while it will be very valuable and meaningful, it will be taught in a fun, kid-friendly way,” said founding director Drue Bullington. “(Sommer Singspiel) engages the younger family members and promotes in them a love of community music-making (and) a sense of cultural heritage and gives exposure to singing, playing, and moving - all things kids love to do naturally - in tandem with developmentally appropriate German language learning interspersed with experiences that stem from German cultural traditions.” Bullington shared one parent’s perspective, quoting the individual as saying, “I love that German language, music, and culture is experienced rather than taught. For instance, rather than just telling the kids the word for ‘apple strudel’’ and that it is a popular German dish and maybe giving them a taste of strudel, they involve the children in making strudel.”
Campers will explore music, language, food, and sports enjoyed in German-speaking countries.
The Lancaster Liederkranz, 722 S. Chiques Road, Manheim, was founded in 1880 as a singing society by German immigrants in Lancaster city. It continues today as a dynamic family organization dedicated to perpetuating and amplifying the founders’ original purpose through song, dance,
language, art, education, and inte national cultural exchange. The Sommer Singspiel camp will be held at the Liederkranz. There is a cost per student to attend, with discounts for Liederkranz members and for multiple family members. Registrations may be submitted at https://llksingspiel.wordpress.com. For more information about the camp, readers may contact Bullington at drue.bullington @gmail.com or 717-940-9927.

replacement liquid, powdered kitten formula, paper towels, and bleach. The need for supplies is great. Between the two organizations, more than 500 cats have found forever families in the past year. Currently, the Pet Pantry has more than 50 cats in foster homes and 20 felines in its adoption room. Still more are sheltered by Furever Home. Additionally, the Pet Pantry provides an average of 6,000 pounds of cat and dog food to households in need
A group of volunteers recently raised $57,000 for Off the Streets. Volunteers for Off the Streets work to help neighbors in Lancaster communities move out of temporary living arrangements, such as hotels and shelters, and into permanent housing. At an April luncheon at Lancaster

Krueger noted that with the Pet Pantry’s assistance this year, there are enough volunteers to run concessions rather than outsourcing to a food truck. A food drive to benefit both organizations will be held during the shopping fair. Folks may receive an entry into a prize drawing for each cat item they donate. The wish list includes canned kitten food, wet or dry cat food, kitten meal
In addition to assisting with security deposits, Off the Streets provides home furnishings and meets basic living needs to get individuals and families started. The organization especially needs volunteers to help with moves. Founded by Michael Oles, a church deacon, Off the Streets began in Danbury, Conn., in 2009. Since 2013, it has been operating in Lancaster; Bridgeport, Conn.; and Huntington Beach, Calif. It is a nonprofit organization that has no paid staff and receives no government money. Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania will host a Holiday Ramble to New York City (NYC) on Sunday, Dec. 2. Museum travelers will have a docent-guided tour of the world-famous, historic landmark Grand Central Terminal and learn its story of great engineering, architectural achievement, survival, and rebirth.
