Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster program director Jennifer West never wants to see a girl miss out on taking part in the program because of a lack of funds. “The
worst thing we can hear is that a girl didn’t participate because it costs too much money, said West. “We want to make the program accessible to every girl regardless of financial limitations. The GOTR endowment, created in honor of Ellen McCabe, West’s stepmother, and administered by the Lancaster Community

Foundation, will work to make sure that never happens. “The money GOTR will (receive) from the endowment will go directly to financial assistance for girls in need, explained West. GOTR Lancaster executive director Carrie Johnson elaborated, “We will receive a percentage each year based on how much is in (the fund), she said, adding that about half the girls who take part in the program receive scholarship funds. GOTR uses physical activity coupled with specific lessons to help develop competency in areas related to social, psychological, and physical development for girls in third through eighth grades. GOTR is not a competitive running program, but the curriculum uses running to teach life skills and promote health. According to West, McCabe was an integral part of GOTR Lancaster from its inception in March 2009. “She talked to us about fundraising and helped us find donors, said West, who noted that McCabe willingly shared her knowledge of how to run a nonprofit organization with West and Johnson. “She was very much a cheerleader and encourager who got us really excited and helped us to stay focused throughout the entire process, said West. “The entire way, (McCabe) was there giving us ideas and supporting us in any way we needed. When McCabe passed away in the fall of 2016, West’s husband, Peter, made a suggestion. “My husband said, ‘Ellen loved GOTR, and she would do anything for it,’ shared West, adding, “She saw how it was changing these girls. Peter suggested the family start an endowment fund in McCabe’s memory for GOTR. “Ellen felt no matter how much money you have, you should give a percentage away, said West. Seeing the work of GOTR continue is important to both West and Johnson. “We want the same values to continue
(into the future) for girls in the community and the thousands of girls we reach every year, explained Johnson. “That can’t happen unless we have big-picture thinkers who value today and tomorrow equally. Our children are our future, and that is where hope lives. According to Johnson, creating the endowment is an investment in the future. “(The endowment embodies) the intention to continue supporting girls for generations, she said. West noted that the funds will support Lancaster-area young people in years to come. “Sustainability is key. Our thought process was that if you invest, you want to make sure the money will be used correctly, she said. “Should GOTR ever cease to exist, the endowment will be used for another organization that supports youths in Lancaster. Johnson lauded the Wests for their forward thinking. “Endowments create an important opportunity to keep money working positively in our community over time, she said, noting that while many people make gifts to causes, only a small percentage leave funds to an organization. “When people are gone, their gifts are gone, said Johnson. West said that she hopes area residents will consider the endowment in their planned giving. “We invite and encourage the community to give toward the endowment fund, West said. Readers who would like to learn more about the endowment may visit www.lancfound.org/fund/girls -on-the-run-endowment-fund. Pictured on front: Ellen McCabe greeted a Girls on the Run (GOTR) 5K participant as she completed her run. McCabe’s family has given an endownment to GOTR Lancaster in her memory.

Memory Loss Group To Meet “After 40 years of marriage, why should care levels keep us apart? Keeping couples together is our goal.
Prepurchasing tickets is strongly recommended. Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce coordinator Kerry Meyers said that a big thank you goes out to all of the chicken barbecue sponsors. “Those sponsorships along with many with many Chamber members who volunteer that day and really good ticket presales help to guarantee a successful fundraiser, noted Meyers. The chicken barbecue is a major fundraiser for the Mount Joy Chamber, which is selffunded by members’ annual dues and upgraded memberships, as well as by funds raised by the Chamber Banquet and Benefit Auction held each spring and the chicken barbecue held annually on the third Saturday in August. Funds are used to support the Chamber office which serves as the official Visitors Center for Mount Joy - and its staff, as well as to promote Chamber members.
Proceeds also support the $4,500 in scholarships that the Chamber awards to local students each year, along with community events such as Music in Memorial Park and visits with Santa Claus. A number of members are also involved with the Chamber Welcome Bags that are distributed to new residents in Mount Joy. The Chamber will celebrate its 80th anniversary in 2019. Aaron’s Acres Camp program held an Alex’s Lemonade Stand fundraiser on July 18 at Weis Markets in Manheim and at the Lancaster Shopping Center near A.C. Moore. The campers raised a total of more than $554 for Alex’s Lemonade Stand. The participants are part of the Aaron’s Acres Acts of Kindness Program (Triple AOK), which allows adolescents and young adults ages 13 to 21 with developmental disabilities to give back to others rather than just being recipients of services. During each Triple AOK two-week camp session, campers attend the recreational program in the morning and are involved with seven community service projects in the afternoon. Recent projects included

The Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster (MCCL) is holding auditions for the 201819 choir year. Auditions include matching pitch, singing in tune, using head voice, maintaining a melodic line while another line is being sung and singing one prepared piece of music. MCCL serves more than 160 singers in Carol Choir, grades two to five; Concert Choir, grades six to eight; and Chamber Choir, grades nine to 12. The choirs
practice weekly throughout the school year in preparation for a concert series in early December and in the spring. Singers rehearse Tuesday evenings in late August through early May. Prospective singers should schedule a 15-minute audition time slot with director Sarah Wingard at 540-383-9986 or carolandconcerchoir@lancaster mennonite.org. MCCL is also accepting registrations for two nonauditioned
programs that develop vocal skills: Prelude Music for children in kindergarten through second grade and Choristers for grades two through eight. Classes are held Tuesday evenings from September through November and again in February through April. To register, readers may contact Audrey Livengood at 717-455-7025 or mccl@lancastermennonite.org. The choirs are led by Wingard and artistic director Rosemary Blessing. Blessing holds degrees in piano performance and business administration from Eastern Mennonite University and has
Recovery Festivals from pg 1 State, A Day Without Love, and Wallace - will perform beginning at noon. Activities for children and adults, including face painting, balloons, crafts, and a traveling magician, will be offered throughout the day, and the event will conclude with a Serenity Circle. Scott Theurer, an organizer for Recovery Day Lancaster and a person in recovery, explained that the Walk for Recovery is not a fundraising event. “It’s to raise awareness and show that recovery is real in Lancaster. We want to put a face to addiction,” he said. “We want to show people we do recover and come back to being contributing members of the community.” The theme of National Recovery Month this year is “Join the Voices for Recovery: Invest in Health, Home, Purpose, and Community.” Theurer noted that strong communities are
important to reduce the number of people developing addictions and to support those in recovery. “Lancaster County is known for having a vibrant and alive recovery community,” he said. “People move here for it.” Theurer reported that in the last quarter, the number of deaths from overdose in Lancaster County had dropped from the previous quarter, and this quarter looks to continue that trend. “To see the numbers coming down is exciting. Recovery is having an effect,” he said. “Hope is a huge part of recovery. That’s why we do these events: Everybody there is joyous and alive.” Information on how to access local resources for recovery will be available at the Recovery Day Lancaster event. Support groups, rehabilitation centers, and other programs will be represented. For immediate assistance, readers may contact the RASE Project

Lowe Earns Recognition
“Meet The Knights” from pg 1 be held at 7 p.m. at the high school’s football stadium, Mumma Drive, Landisville. Hempfield football logo rear window emblems, auto magnets, sweatshirts, T-shirts, hoodies, and caps will be sold by the Football Booster Club to kick off the 2018 season. A feature of the evening will be the recognition of players and teams from the Red Rose Midget Football League, which will feed the high school rosters in coming years. Midget teams from East Petersburg, Mountville, and the Hempfield area will be recognized. Additionally, the cheerleaders from the midget teams will join with the Hempfield cheering squad to energize the crowd. Head football coach Ron Zeiber will share the coaching staff ’s views on the progress and expectations of the varsity squad. Zeiber commented on the preparation to this point, saying, “We’ve had a good response and commitment to the voluntary, preseason weight lifting and the PIAA-mandated heat acclimation
Your
conditioning programs. From the coaching standpoint, we’re rather excited, yet guarded, going forward as we need to find replacements for a lot of outstanding players from last year due to graduation, some of whom have gone on to collegiate programs.” Zeiber noted that a number of baseball, track, and lacrosse players have joined the football team, and the competition for positions is evident. “We have another fine group of student-athletes,” he remarked. “We feel that we’ll be putting an exciting and competitive team on the field and hope that you all come out to support us.” The Knights will play their season opener on Friday, Aug. 24, at Dallastown Area High School. The first home game will take place on Friday, Aug. 31, against Manheim Central High School. For more information about “Meet the Knights,” readers may contact booster club member James Dougherty at 717-984-2740 or jwdoc25@outlook.com.

The Lancaster County Academy (LCA) recently received a $500 mini-grant from the Lancaster County School Counselors Association to be used to help motivate high school students who are at risk for not graduating. The recipient of the grant school counselor and service learning coordinator Deborah Schmidt saw that many of her students had poor time management skills and lacked the necessary motivation to complete graduation requirements. To address this need, Schmidt compiled a series of four lesson plans centered around goal setting. Lessons included creation of a vision board depicting students’ future lives, understanding how to write and implement effective goals, how to devise a monthly goal planning calendar, the importance of finding an accountability partner, how to overcome obstacles, and designing a chart to keep track of their progress. Students at the LCA participated in all goal setting lessons and were asked to come up with both a personal and school goal. Students were also told that if they completed at least one high school course during a three-month period and had good school attendance, that
