“(The 9/11 Stair Climb) gives everybody a chance to pause and remember 343 firefighters who died and what they sacrificed that day,” explained Lancaster 9/11 Stair Climb committee chair Scott Yuill. “It’s our chance to honor those 343,” added committee member Joyce Mokros. The eighth annual Lancaster 9/11 Stair Climb will be held on Sunday, Sept. 9, at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. Registration for participants will open at 8 a.m., and the event will start at 9 a.m. with a time of calisthenics. Bagpiper Heidi Tywalk will play “Amazing Grace,” and East Petersburg Fire Company (EPFC) chaplain Bob Kauffman will give an invocation. Participants will
begin climbing the equivalent of 110 flights of stairs at approximately 9:30 a.m. Moments of silence will be observed at the times the Twin Towers fell. The event will conclude in a new manner this year. The first 343 participants will receive a badge representing a firefighter who died in the World Trade Center collapse on Sept. 11, 2001. An additional group of people may receive badges representing police officers, as supplies are available. As individuals complete the climb, they may ring a bell and announce the name of the person whose badge they carry. Yuill explained that this new procedure is based on the method used in New York City to honor first responders who died in the line of duty. Prior to the introduction of two-way radios on fire trucks, a system of bells was See 9/11 Stair Climb pg 2

Sudan Rebirth Ministry was founded by Jacob Guot, the Rev. Kent Kroehler, and others from First United Methodist Church and Lancaster. Guot, one of the Lost Boys of Sudan, was one of thousands of boys who escaped a Sudanese civil war by walking more than 1,000 miles across east Africa. Guot grew up in Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya. He was able to immigrate to the U.S., become a citizen, and earn a GED diploma. A chance meeting with Kroehler, then the minister at First United Methodist Church, eventually led Guot to Lancaster, where he lived for four years and graduated from Lancaster Bible College. He then moved to Wilmore, Ky., where he graduated from Asbury Theological Seminary. Guot has been able to serve his

Aug. 30. This year’s inductees include the late Robert Cooper, Class of 1966; Luke Murray, Class of 2004; Lisa McDonnell Stough, Class of 2006; and Joe Kinderwater, Class of 2007. Cooper earned three varsity letters in football and in track and field and two varsity letters in basketball. During his senior year, he was a co-captain of the football and basketball teams, and he was voted the most valuable player (MVP) in football. He was also named the MVP in a basketball holiday tournament. Cooper led the football team to a cochampion title in the Lancaster County League. In basketball, he led the Lancaster County League in rebounds and averaged 16.8 points per game. In track and field, Cooper was second in the javelin throw at the Lancaster County Meet, finishing behind only Bob Rivard, his teammate and eventual state champion. Later, Cooper played football for three years for the University of Pennsylvania. After college, he entered the real estate business and coached football for the East Petersburg Bulldogs. Murray helped his volleyball teammates accomplish what no other team in Pennsylvania had: win four consecutive state championships. From 2001 to 2004, the Hempfield men’s volleyball team went 116-2 in official play and won four state championships, three District III championships, and four Lancaster-Lebanon (L-L) League championships, all with Murray on the team, including three years as starting setter. Individually, Murray helped the team go 87-2 in official play as starting setter, and he was voted first-team All State in 2002, 2003, and 2004. Following high school, Murray played collegiately at Penn State University and helped the team win a national championship in 2008. He has also played professionally in Cyprus and Puerto Rico, trained for the U.S. National Team, and spent time as a U.S Elite Volleyball clinician. Murray is currently an assistant coach and scouting coordinator for the Colorado State University women’s volleyball team.

In his senior year, Kinderwater won a gold medal in the PIAA State AAA 500 freestyle when he ranked fifth in the United States. He was selected as an All-State swimmer four times and as an All-American three times. Kinderwater earned a spot in the 2008 Olympic Trials in the 1-mile event. In 1978, Ruth was volunteering at the Mount Joy Re-Uzit Shop (now the Mount Joy Gift and Thrift) when a manager approached her to see if she would consider forming a group of ladies to open a similar shop in Columbia. Ruth prayerfully gathered several women together who began looking for a small building in Columbia to use for the new not-for-profit shop. Like other Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) thrift shops throughout the country, the new Columbia store would be volunteer-run and support the local and global relief and development efforts of MCC. “It was birthed by prayer, and we sought the Lord’s direction before we moved forward,” recalled Ruth. The ladies found a small space to rent a block north of the store’s current location that needed minimal renovations. With donations passed on from the excess at the Mount Joy store, the group of dedicated volunteers opened the doors of the Columbia Re-Uzit Shop on Dec. 15, 1978, with a warm reception from grateful neighbors and visitors. For many years, the volunteers would sort, price, and pack donations at the home of manager Grace Huber before transporting them back to the store to be displayed and sold. Eventually, the lack of space, combined with the shop’s growth and popularity, led to the search for a larger location in Columbia. Hershey was one of several individuals that Ruth’s husband, Abe Charles, asked to serve on the original board of directors and take part in the search for a building to purchase. Abe served as bishop of what was then the Manor District of Mennonite Churches, where many of the store’s founders and volunteers attended. Abe, Paul Charles, and Hershey walked the streets of Columbia looking for a new storefront. “Nothing seemed right, but then I drove past (our current location) and it caught my eye,” recalled Hershey. The burned-out, boarded-up, blackas-coal hardware store that had sat vacant for several years left the board members somewhat uneasy, so they sought advice from the board members of the Mount Joy Re-Uzit and committed the decision to prayer until Hershey said they felt the Lord confirm that 363 Locust St. was to be the new location. After purchasing the building in 1987, volunteers spent countless
hours cleaning and restoring it before opening at the new spot in January 1988. The Columbia ReUzit Shop gained additional space in 2003, when it expanded to encompass the building next door. Today the retail space offers shoppers a selection of women’s, men’s, and children’s clothing and shoes, as well as furniture, housewares, small appliances, linens, home décor, plants, toys, games, books, greeting cards, and miscellaneous items. An ongoing silent auction is another popular part of the shop where guests enjoy bidding on antiques, collectibles, and unusual items. Volunteers are needed to serve in various capacities, and interested individuals may visit the store to apply. Time commitment is up to the individual. Proceeds support MCC, as well as the Hands Across the Street ministry, which serves individuals in need in the Columbia area. The Columbia Re-Uzit Shop is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays. Donations of quality, gently used items are accepted at the store during regular business hours. Readers with questions may call the store at 717-684-7621. Pictured on front: The Columbia Re-Uzit Shop, represented by board members (from left) Wesley Funk, Linda Funk, Pam Petersheim, manager Kathryn Ferree, Betty Zimmerman, Mary Jane Nissley, Robert Kanagy, Nelson Hershey, (not pictured) Kenneth Rohrer, and Carol Rohrer, is celebrating 40 years of serving the community. Proceeds from the volunteer-run thrift store support Mennonite Central Committee and Hands Across the Street.

The committee has compiled information on the descendants of Jacob and Maria Krey Sensenig, who immigrated from Switzerland around 1717. The committee will not add births, deaths, and marriages that occur after Dec. 31, but organizers will continue to update events occurring prior to Dec. 31. The work will be offered on a computer disc for a fee. Plans to publish a Sensenig Encyclopedia are under discussion. Maps will be available to visit the Sensenig Farm Cemetery located off of White Oak Road. Anyone who thinks they may be a Sensenig descendent or wants to find out is encouraged to attend the reunion. Rodriguez Takes On New Leadership Role Eloy Rodriguez of New Providence has been appointed middle school principal and high school associate principal at Lancaster Mennonite School’s Lancaster campus for the 2018-19 school year. Rodriguez is currently the principal at the New Danville campus. A new principal for New Danville is being sought as Rodriguez begins his new role at the Lancaster campus. The Lancaster campus serves more than 500 students in sixth through 12th grades at 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. Among these students are youths from more than 30 countries, for whom Lancaster Mennonite serves as a boarding school. Rodriguez brings 15 years of experience to the role of principal. He began his teaching career as a third-grade teacher in Luray, Va. He also brings experience in project-based learning, an interdisciplinary approach that invites students to acquire knowledge
and skills through investigation, integration, and synthesis of a complex question, problem, or challenge experienced in the real word. In 2009, he joined the Lancaster Mennonite team as the fifth-grade teacher at the New Danville campus, where he became the principal in 2013. During his nine years at the New Danville campus, Rodriguez and colleagues helped to implement the Blazer Buddy leadership program, a school learning garden, a composting and recycling program, a school-wide restorative discipline plan, student-led conferences in secondthrough fifth-grade classes, and a reading program for thirdthrough fifth-grade students. Rodriguez has given leadership to the new MakerSpace that will open in the coming school year, giving students an opportunity each week to work through the design process as they collaborate, innovate, tinker, create,
Eloy Rodriguez build, prototype, and practice problem solving related to realworld problems. Rodriguez also helped to organize a five-week Teaching Anti-Racism training for Lancaster Mennonite faculty and staff. Rodriguez graduated from Eastern Mennonite University with a Bachelor of Science in elementary education with a

A century ago, the United States had just entered “The Great War.” While many endorsed the effort, there were persons who could not in good conscience be involved in the killing of other humans. Often at great cost, even including death in a few cases, they spoke through their words and actions of a different path. A series of educational meetings will be held alongside the exhibit, focusing on conscientious objection to war. “Voices of Conscience: The Witness of Conscientious Objectors in WWI” will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 27, at Martindale Mennonite Fellowship Center, 352 Martindale Road, Ephrata. Anabaptist Service Program will make a presentation. Interested individuals may take a broader look at the conscientious objector experience at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 30, at Lancaster Brethren in Christ Church, 1865 Fruitville Pike, Lancaster. Anne Yoder, peace collection archivist at Swarthmore College, will share from her work collecting the accounts of conscientious objectors. She will expand the narrative to include nonreligious views in the understanding of conscience in World War I. Beth Hostetler Mark, librarian emeritus at Messiah College, will present the story of E.J. Swalm, who was drafted by the Canadian military but refused to enlist and was imprisoned. He was later paroled through the intervention of Samuel F. Coffman and other Mennonite leaders. He became a minister and bishop with the Brethren in Christ Church and was well known for his active support of the peace position. The exhibit was created and is being toured by the Kauffman Museum, Bethel College, North Newton, Kan.

Youths Re-enact Pioneer Trek Beginning in the 1840s, more than 70,000 Latter-day Saints made the trip from Nauvoo, Ill., to Salt Lake City, Utah, utilizing handcarts and wagons. To reenact these journeys by taking a 15-mile trek, a total of 93 youths from the York and Lancaster congregations of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints convened at Camp Liahona in Caledonia, near Chambersburg, from June 28 to 30. The youths, between the ages of 14 and 18, were organized into nine families, each with an adult ma and an adult pa. They dressed in pioneer-style clothing. During their journey, they pushed and pulled handcarts filled with provisions and personal items. They slept under the stars at night,
and they had to leave their cellphones behind. On June 29, after packing up the camp, the families hiked approximately 4 to 5 miles, stopping periodically to eat, rest, and set up camp. Their meals were pioneer recipes cooked in Dutch ovens. In the afternoon, the youths participated in activities similar to ones the pioneers would have enjoyed, such as stick pull, stick ball, hoop toss, three-legged races, horseshoes, trap ball, hoop roll races, a ring toss, a cornhole toss, a tomahawk throw, sack races, and more, including a square dance with a country band. They also learned skills, such as black powder rifle shooting, candle making, and butter making, and they
held testimonial meetings. In the morning on June 30, they packed their burdens onto the handcarts to take a final 3mile trek to their starting point. On July 24, Latter-day Saints celebrated Pioneer Day as a reminder of the hardships endured by the pioneers on their trek. Pioneer Day commemorates that day in 1847 when Brigham Young and the first wave of Saints arrived in Salt Lake City. The trek occurs every four years.
Youths from the Lancaster Stake with wards in York and Lancaster counties pulled handcarts filled with their gear as they re-enacted the Mormon pioneer trek that took place in the 1800s from Nauvoo, Ill., to Salt Lake City, Utah. Among the participants were (back, from left) Staheli Palmer, Kylee Splattstoesser, Courtney Ohl, Maia Knudson, (front) Haley Smith, and Haley Mair.

During its Farm Show Weekend, the Lancaster Barnstormers raised $6,800 to support the mission of the youth program at the Lancaster County Agriculture Council. It is the third year the Lancaster County Agriculture Council has teamed up with the Barnstormers to organize the Farm Show, which took place from June 22 to 24. Farmers, agriculture business owners and employees, and 4-H and FFA students were among the 15,000 who attended the threeday event. Outside of the stadium, modern and antique tractors and other machinery were on display for attendees to check out. On June 23, live farm animals took over the outfield, including cows, sheep, pigs, alpacas and
rabbits. Agriculture-themed games were highlighted in between innings, such as alpaca races. Local dairy princesses were on hand to answer questions from the crowd. Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding was the guest of honor on June 23 at a pregame program. Redding also threw out the first pitch to start the game. The Lancaster County Agriculture Council also presented its science fair winners with the Lancaster Agriculture Innovation Awards. A $500 donation also was awarded to Lancaster County Career and Technology Center’s Animal Production Science and Technology program.
