Golf Outing Will Support LCCC Food Hub Labor Day Auction Set For Sept. 1 And 3

By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Approximately 11 out of every 100 people in Lancaster County do not know where they will get their next meal. “That’s a pretty significant number in a community of our size,” Lancaster County Council of Churches (LCCC) executive director Gail Rittenhouse observed after sharing the grave statistic. “Our Food Hub is filling that gap. (People experiencing food insecurity) know they can come to us and leave with 40 to 50 pounds of food once a month.” Last year, the LCCC Food Hub provided fresh and nutritious food to nearly 29,000 individuals, which is an increase of more than 3,400 from 2016. The majority of clients pick up food from the Food Hub, located at the LCCC headquarters at 812 N. Queen St., Lancaster, where in addition to receiving prepacked bags of nonperishable food, See Food Hub pg 3

Gardeners will love the plant auction, which will continue on Sept. 3 in order to accommodate the six truckloads of plants donated to the fundraiser. A high-end auction on Sept. 3 will focus on vacations, fine jewelry, handyman services, once-in-a-lifetime experiences, and handcrafted items. Additional auctions that day will include sports items and quilts. The sports memorabilia auction will showcase items from regional, state, and national icons with guest auctioneer and SportsTalk host Eric May. The specialty quilt auction will offer hand-quilted pieces from

Amish crafters, quilters’ groups, and volunteers, as well as gently used quilts in a wide range of sizes. they may choose fresh produce and proteins. The Food Hub also delivers food to the residents of three low-income senior highrise buildings, provides food for caseworkers to take to clients who are unable to travel to the Food Hub, and supplies some of the components for the free community meals hosted by Lancaster County churches. By the end of July 2018, the Food Hub had served 10.7 percent more people than it had at the same time in 2017. The food distributed to these individuals was obtained through a nearly even split between purchases from the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, where the Food Hub pays roughly 8 cents per pound, and items donated by individuals, local grocery stores, and restaurants. “This speaks volumes to the support of the community donating to us,” Rittenhouse remarked. Rittenhouse and Steve and Alex Schramm hope community support extends to the fourth annual TransFOREmation Golf Tournament, which will be held

drinks, and other beverages throughout the event. “It’s a great day and a great value,” Steve commented. The outing is also for a great cause. “Nobody wants to see anybody starving,” Alex stated. “(Food) is a basic human need.” The LCCC was founded by area churches in 1947. It has since become ecumenical and a full-service social services organization, which provides food, clothing, shelter, and transportation to people who live on 150 percent or less of the poverty level. Clients sign a self-declaration of need. “Our emphasis is on serving,” Rittenhouse said. Donations of fresh and nonperishable food items, as well as financial contributions, are welcome. “All donations are graciously accepted,” Rittenhouse said. “Cash is always good (because) we can really leverage the buying power.” For more information about contributing to the LCCC Food Hub or to register for the golf outing, readers may call 717-2912261, email grittenhouse @lcchurches.org, or visit www.lccouncilofchurches.org.

Heart Of Lancaster from pg 1 on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 1 and 2, at Root’s Country Market, 705 Graystone Road, Manheim. Admission and parking are both free, and the outdoor show will take place rain or shine. For Marilyn Hobday, founder and chairperson of the Heart of Lancaster Art and Craft Show, ensuring that each of the artists makes his or her own work is crucial. Each applicant must submit a detailed report on how his or her products are made in order to make sure that the show’s selection is an honest representation of handmade arts and crafts. Many of the 200 exhibitors are from the local area, with others traveling from all along the East Coast. Fortyfive of the juried artists are brand new to the 2018 show. Fifty artists will be demonstrating how their items are made, such as newcomer Topaz Martofel, who uses balloons to create entire unique structures and rooms. Basket weaver Joan Betzold and photographer Keith Grebinger have been selected as this year’s featured artists and will be highlighted in the free magazine available to patrons at the show’s information booth in aisle one. Betzold hails from Bel Air, Md., and has been a basket weaver and weaving teacher for more than 25 years. She creates designs, dyes the fibers, and weaves original baskets using ancient techniques without using nails, glue, or staples and is well known for incorporating unusual items into her baskets. Grebinger, who was born and raised in Lancaster, fell in love with the art of photography while attending Manheim Township High School and has more than 35 years of experience in the field, including shooting in 47 states and eight countries. His love of nature is

reflected in his landscape photography. Another important factor in planning the show for Hobday is having artwork at a variety of price points available for patrons - many of whom have been attending since the show first began. In addition to perusing quality arts and crafts, attendees may purchase a variety of food and enjoy live music by Over Easy, a Lancaster-area trio specializing in light pop favorites. At the information booth, folks may enter to win drawings for gift cards. Winners will be announced every hour. “I love the show. It’s like a new show for me every year when I go,” remarked Hobday. “This is our 31st anniversary, and that’s just unbelievable to me.” Hobday and other organizers are also celebrating the fact that Heart of Lancaster has once again been named one of the Top 200 Best Shows in the Country by a magazine for crafters. “We’ve had really good attendance and quality vendors. They have a thousand other shows they could go to, but they choose us,” Hobday reflected. “It’s all about the community. It’s free, and we love that everybody can come and enjoy it.” Each year, a local charity is chosen to receive donations from the event. A donation box will be set up for those interested in donating toward this year’s nonprofit organization, the Columbia Animal Shelter. The shelter was the dream of the late Judy McKonly, who passed away in 2017. Her family has set out to fulfill that dream and McKonly’s wish to save the lives of at-risk animals. For more information about the Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show, readers may visit www.hlcshow.com.

OLGA Sets Golf Tournament The Overlook Ladies’ Golf Association (OLGA) will hold its 13th annual “Success Is Sweet” charity invitational golf tournament at Overlook Golf Course, 2040 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, on Monday, Sept. 10. The event will benefit Milagro House. Women golfers are invited to gather for a day of golf and prizes. Registration will start at 6:45 a.m., and the four-person scramble event will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Golfers need a USGA established handicap at a regulation 18-hole course. that we will use as well to help increase the intensity. “We have guys of all abilities there. There is no physical fitness requirement for F3, added Fyke. “We leave no man behind and will always encourage you to become a better version of yourself. Part of F3 is that we work together because you are only as strong as your weakest link. So we want to make sure every link is as strong as possible so they are better for their family, the community, and themselves. F3 stands for Fitness, Fellowship, and Faith. Although the organization is not specifically affiliated with a church, Fyke said many of those who attend the workouts are involved in a church of their own. “Our mission is to plant, grow, and serve small workout groups for men for the invigoration of male community leadership, stated Fyke. According to Fyke, the F3 founders came up with the idea when they noticed a strong lack of male community. “This provides an opportunity to get together with like-minded guys

Each workout ends with a Circle of Trust. “This is the time where PAX share what’s going on in their lives - the good, the bad, and the ugly, Fyke said. “What we are going through, more than likely somebody else has gone through and (that) provides an opportunity for additional support. We lift these up in prayer. If you aren’t a believer, that’s OK; you can still be there to support your fellow man. Another aspect of F3 that Fyke enjoys is choosing nicknames for each other. Fyke is known as Sunspot, and other monikers among the group include Eagle, the Fridge, Garden State, and Skater. “F3 is what you make out of it. If you just want the free workout, that’s OK; however, once you (show up) for a workout, you will see we are more than a workout group, remarked Fyke. When Gary Fyke moved to Mount Joy from the greater Chicago area in 2017, he knew that he wanted to establish an F3 group in his new location. “Moving here, I couldn’t not have F3 in my life, recalled Fyke, referring to the national network of free, peer-led workouts for men. While being part of an F3 site in his hometown, Fyke helped out with operations, leading workouts, and coordinating community involvements. Three people showed up to the very first F3 Lanco workout on Oct. 21, 2017, and since then the gathering has grown to approximately 14 regular attendees. Men of all ages are invited to participate in F3 Lanco, which meets from 7 to 8 a.m. every Saturday at Rapho Township Community Park,

doors, rain or shine. Participants should dress for the weather and bring water and work gloves. “The workouts are all peerled, meaning the guys take turns each week on leading the group, explained Fyke. “When you first start, you won’t lead for a while until you are comfortable and ready to do so. We will work with every guy to ensure they are ready. Fyke said the workouts are considered boot camp style, mainly because the group counts in cadence to each of the sessions. Body weight exercises make up a bulk of the time, including jumping jacks, mountain climbers, squats, burpees, push-ups, lunges, bear crawls, planks, and more. “It’s different every week because a different PAX (person in attendance) leads, and each person brings their own flavor to it,

Forty-six local law enforcement agencies throughout south central Pennsylvania are joining the Pennsylvania State Police to conduct the third targeted aggressive driving enforcement wave through Sunday, Aug. 26. Southcentral Pennsylvania municipal departments are from Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties. As part of the Aggressive Driving Enforcement and Education Project, the third wave will aim to reduce the number of aggressive driving-related crashes, injuries and deaths on roadways throughout the state. Any aggressive driver stopped by police will receive a ticket. The enforcement wave will focus on red light running, the Steer Clear law, tailgating, and speeding. Motorists exhibiting other unsafe behaviors such as driving too fast for conditions, following too closely, or other

aggressive actions will also be cited. During the last enforcement wave from March 19 to April 29, 45 participating municipal law enforcement agencies made contact with 4,376 vehicles, issuing 4,144 citations; 2,761 of those citations were speeding violations. In addition, 26 texting violations were cited, 18 fugitive apprehensions were made, and 27 impaired drivers were removed from roadways. The aggressive driving enforcement is a part of the Pennsylvania Aggressive Driving Enforcement and Education Project and is funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). More than 235 municipal law enforcement agencies throughout Pennsylvania are participating. For more information, readers may visit www.penndot.gov/safety.

Lancaster Country Day School (LCDS) awarded four $12,000 John A. Jarvis Merit Scholarships to area students. All Middle and Upper School applicants were eligible, and scholarships are renewable each year through graduation. The scholarship honors former head of school John Jarvis, who sought to make LCDS accessible to a wide range of deserving students. This year’s scholarship recipients are Sarah Biltz, Annabelle Copeland, McKenna Kraft, and Jeremy Ouilikon. Ninth-grader Sarah is the daughter of Joanne and Todd Biltz of Lancaster. She plays tennis and dances. Sarah enjoys the performing arts and is involved in both school and community theater. Eleventh-grader Annabelle is the daughter of Tina and Lee Copeland, both of Palmyra. At her previous school, she was the copy editor of her school newspaper and also a member of the Student Council. Annabelle plays basketball and field hockey. Sixth-grader McKenna is the daughter of Rebecca and Zachary Kraft of Lancaster. McKenna plays tennis and swims. She also is a member of the school choir and plays the guitar. Sixth-grader Jeremy is the son of Neva and Alain Ouilikon of Denver. Jeremy plays soccer and basketball. He also plays the trumpet and piano and is a member of the school choir and band. LCDS is a college-preparatory school founded in 1908. For several years, TTC/Potter’s House has hoped to build a faithbased rehab facility to combat drug addiction. On July 14, TTC/Potter’s House staff, area representatives, and friends of the ministry gathered at 261 School Lane, Brownstown, located along the Conestoga River, to dedicate the property to that cause and break ground for the recovery center, to be called Still Waters. TTC/Potter’s House is a nonprofit, Christ-centered ministry that offers a holistic approach to physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of pre-release and post-release prisoners and individuals desiring to overcome addictions. The organization is in the midst of a capital campaign seeking to raise $2 million for Still Waters Recovery Center, which will include a 30to 90-day intensive program in a controlled environment. Wendell Metzler and Ryan Forbes opened the groundbreaking event by telling their story of an unlikely friendship between a repeat offender, Forbes, and a police officer, Metzler. As Forbes finished speaking, he began to compare the fallow ground near the river to the fallow ground in the hearts of those fighting addiction, noting that the new center will provide the opportunity for the seed of Christ’s love to be planted in those hearts.

Lloyd Hoover, executive director of TTC/Potter’s House, echoed Forbes’ thoughts as he noted that Still Waters can be a place that tells a new story of recovery from addiction. “I declare here today the need for a higher power (to overcome addiction) is an absolute necessity, and that higher power is Jesus Christ, our Lord,” said Hoover. “This place (can) become a place of transformation and recovery, and today we are turning soil for a new day.” Rob Wetherholtz, associate ministry director for TTC/Potter’s House, whose family had owned the land along the river for decades, spoke of a vision the Lord gave him for the property as a place of healing for the lost and addicted in need of a way home. “This is where we come to the green pastures beside the still waters,” he said, referencing both the 23rd Psalm and the name of the facility. Jay Myelin, member of the TTC/Potter’s House board, noted that the capital campaign that the organization began a year ago has raised $750,000. “We have a long way to go yet, but we have a great start,” he said, adding, “But it’s not about the numbers and buildings; (it’s about the staff’s) heart and vision for transformation of lives. … There is nothing we do any more rewarding than that.” Rep. Keith Greiner of the 43rd District told the gathering that he grew up not far from the site of the ground breaking. “In Harrisburg, we know there’s a problem with

Still Waters is a ministry of TTC/Potter’s House. opioid addiction, and we are trying to do things legislatively,” said Greiner. “But a ministry like this can mean a story like Ryan and Wendell’s can happen to a lot of people.” Rep. Dave Zimmerman of the 99th District said that the Still Waters setting brought to mind the need for quiet spaces. “In Scripture, Jesus would find a secluded place (to pray),” he said. “For all those who struggle with addictions, there is hope.” As representatives and friends of the ministry stepped forth to take hold of shovels and turn the earth, Samuel Mwangi, pastor of

Carpenter Community Church in Brownstown, offered the prayer of dedication. “We are trusting God that this property is not just buildings and a curriculum,” said Mwangi. “We are trusting God for a divine power to change every life that steps on this property, (where) the name of Jesus will be honored as lives are changed.” Following the dedication, five clients of TTC/Potter’s House gave their lives to Christ and were baptized in the river adjacent to the property. God’s Clothing Closet Event Planned At Ruhl’s UMC By Chelsea Peifer

“It’s a huge event, and it’s a lot of fun.” That is how organizer Kris Gray succinctly described God’s Clothing Closet, an annual clothing giveaway held at Ruhl’s United Methodist Church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, held just in time for the dawning of a new school year. “We have people who come because they want something new and some people who are in desperate need of something,” shared Gray. The community is invited to shop for free quality used clothing, footwear, and accessories for men, women, and children in all sizes and for all seasons at this year’s event on Saturday, Aug. 25, from 8 to 11 a.m. Clothing is organized by size and displayed on clothing racks or tables for ease of shopping. The facility is air-conditioned and handicapped-accessible, and it has plenty of parking. On-site child care will be offered while parents shop. In addition to clothing, free Bibles and devotional materials will be on hand for adults and children. A limited number of quilts handmade by Ruhl’s church members will also be available for new mothers. Once folks are finished shopping, they are welcome to relax and enjoy musical entertainment, light refreshments, and a game

Volunteers from Ruhl’s United Methodist Church in Manheim invite the community to God’s Clothing Closet, an annual event offering free quality used clothing, on Aug. 25. room in an area separate from the clothing setup. Gray noted that donations of nonperishable food or toiletries for the Manheim Central Food Pantry are encouraged but not required. Currently, items needed for the food pantry include canned fruit, canned meat and soups, peanut butter, strawberry jelly, cereal, and boxed potatoes. Last year, God’s Clothing Closet welcomed 465 shoppers - most of whom arrived in the first hour, Gray said. “The line of shoppers before we opened the doors stretched to the Prayer Garden, and some of those shoppers arrived before 5:30 a.m.,” recounted Gray. “Several shoppers who attend every year took the time to stop and thank us for this

needed ministry and how it personally blessed them.” In addition to giving away clothing, approximately 220 Bibles and 37 handmade comforters were distributed to guests at the 2017 event. Five large boxes of nonperishable food donated by shoppers were given to the Manheim Central Food Pantry. Any items left over at the event’s end will be donated to Community Aid. Collecting clothing, shoes, and accessories for the next God’s Clothing Closet is a yearlong process, and donations of quality used items are welcome at any time. For more details on making a donation or about God’s Clothing Closet, readers may call the church at 717-665-3400.
