“We give (parents) a chance to break the cycle of poverty through education and child care,” Johns explained. “They offer support to the moms and dads to get their educations,” Kirchner added. The mission of Mom’s House of Lancaster, located at 415 S. Queen St., Lancaster, is to break the cycle of poverty by helping single parents reach their educational goals. Parents may be pursuing their GED or a master’s degree or anything in between, but all participants have access to parenting and life skills classes, tutoring, a food bank, a children’s clothing closet, a scholarship program, counseling, referral services, and encouragement and support. A major part of the Mom’s House program is the free state-accredited Keystone Star 3 early learning center for children age 6 weeks through preschool age whose parents are Mom’s House participants. “All of our kids leave our program kindergarten ready, or they are set up with an Individualized Education Program,” Johns said, noting that a variety of therapists provide services to children at Mom’s House as needed. Currently, 20 children and 14 parents are active Mom’s House clients. At least a dozen families are on the waiting list. The program, which has been in existence for 28 years, has recently mushroomed. “We have tripled in terms of staff and doubled in terms of children in the last two years,” said gala committee chair Dan Massey. Individual contributions are the primary source of funding Mom’s House, Johns said, and the gala provides additional support. “Community awareness (of the existence and purpose of Mom’s House) is still a big portion of why we do the gala,” Massey commented. “In the first two years, it was mostly about awareness while raising some funds. Now it’s 50-50.” “(The gala) is a fantastic evening to see what donations have done,” Johns said. “Whether you’re sitting at a table with a current mom or listening to a former child speak, it’s inspiring to hear how we’re changing the future.” Friday, Oct. 5, has been set as the deadline to buy tickets for the gala, and they may be purchased by calling Mom’s House at 717-396-9130 or visiting
www.momshouselancaster.org. Readers are invited to sponsor tables or buy tickets for current clients. Donations of auction items and financial contributions will be accepted as well.

who raise a minimum of $100 will receive a Heart Walk T-shirt and the opportunity to earn additional prizes. Members of the Heinaman family of West Hempfield Township will share their story during the Lancaster Heart Walk opening ceremonies and kick off the walk from the starting line. Leading the way will be 6year-old Tyler Heinaman, son of Ryan and Nicole Heinaman. Tyler was born in June 2012 with a condition called coarctation of the aorta, a narrowing of the blood vessel that carries oxygenated blood to the rest of the body. The condition was detected when he was several weeks old, and he was immediately flown to Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Del., where he received surgery to correct the defect five days later. Tyler will still need to be monitored by cardiologists to ensure that the surgical repairs adapt to his growing heart and body, but today he participates in Cub Scouts and soccer and can live a normal life with no restrictions. The Heart Walk is part of the American Heart Association’s Healthy for Good movement to encourage sustainable, healthy lifestyle changes. Dollars raised will support the American Heart Association’s lifesaving mission to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke, the nation’s first and fifth most prevalent killers, respectively, through supporting heart disease and stroke research, health care quality improvement, advocacy, prevention, and education. The 2018 Lancaster Heart Walk is chaired by Carrie Willetts, senior vice president of WellSpan Health and president of WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital. In addition to serving as the Heart Walk chair, Willetts serves on the board of directors for Hospice & Community Care and the Ephrata Area Education Foundation. The Trust To Celebrate Five Seasons By Ann Mead Ash
Looking back on the opening of The Trust Performing Arts Center, located at 37 N. Market St., Lancaster, five years ago, executive director Robert Bigley admitted that the new venture held some surprises. “We didn’t really know what we were getting into,” he said, adding that the opportunity to start a downtown performing arts center has had many positive results.
“We are honored to have been a part of the arts renaissance in Lancaster this past decade,” Bigley stated That delight is exhibited in the lineup that has been chosen to celebrate The Trust’s fifth anniversary. “We are pulling out all the stops,” announced Bigley. Returning artists who will perform will include the Donald Sinta Quartet, Daniel Hsu, New York Polyphony, and Christopher Shih and Friends. The King’s Singers,

Hsu, New York Polyphony, and Christopher Shih and Friends. The King’s Singers, a group celebrating its 50th anniversary, will perform at The Trust for the first time. All concerts will begin at 7:30 p.m. On Friday, Sept. 7, The Trust will hold its seasonal launch party, where a showcase of local choreographers will present their works in competition. “The AY/dancers will choose one of those (works) to present (at The Trust),” explained Bigley. A-Y/dancers will perform on Saturday, Nov. 17, and Sunday, Nov. 18, at 7:30 p.m. as part of the Durang Dance Collective Presentations at the venue. A-Y/dancers will perform three pieces by world-renowned choreographers and one by the winner of the local competition. Bigley noted that the Donald Sinta Quartet, made up of four saxophonists who play transcriptions of classical music, crossover songs, and some fun pieces, will open the season on Thursday, Oct. 4. “They played at The Trust in our first season,” recalled Bigley. “They had just won (gold) at the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition, which is the most important

Daniel’s Den from pg 1 a year of fundraising and planning, Build Week took place in April 2008, and the playground officially opened in September 2008. “Witnessing God’s hand during Build Week and also seeing how He provided people to financially support the completion of the playground (are my favorite memories of the project),” Haldeman reflected. Daniel’s Den is open to the public from dawn to dusk year-round. The playground was built with six guiding principles. It was designed to be a place where all children could play and learn together in order to foster a new generation of acceptance. The playground was to be community-built and community-supported, highly utilized, and fully accessible. It was constructed of environmentally conscious materials. Ultimately, the design for Daniel’s Den was highly customized in order to inspire more creative play. “Children with more challenging play areas develop great cognitive skills,” related executive pastor Bryan Gerlach. “(Daniel’s
Den) affords greater opportunities for children of all abilities.” In addition to Daniel’s Den, Manor Church Community Park includes a half-mile walking trail and sports fields. Manor Church owns and maintains the park and playground to bless the surrounding region. Haldeman noted that the blessings from the playground have exceeded her expectations. “Before it was built, I really never thought about families, parents, and children coming to know Christ through the playground, but that’s exactly what has happened, and knowing I could be a part of that gives me wonderful satisfaction,” she said. Everyone is welcome to attend the celebration, and registration is not required. In the event of light rain, the festivities will take place in a pavilion on the grounds. The event will be canceled if there is extreme weather. For more information, readers may visit www.manorchurch.org or call the church at 717-285-3138.
Historical Society To Present Annual Storytelling Night The Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society has announced that its annual Storytelling Night will take place on Monday, Sept. 10, beginning at 7 p.m. at Landisville Mennonite Church, 3320 Bowman Road, Landisville. Phyllis Pellman Good will serve as moderator, and Donald B. Kraybill and Lorraine Stutzman Amstutz will share the stage. Kraybill and Amstutz will each tell seven three- or four-minute stories from their lives, alternating throughout the evening. Amstutz is the coordinator of the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) Restorative Justice program. She provides consulting and training for agencies and communities seeking to implement restorative justice processes and has worked in the field since 1984. She received her master’s degree in social work from Marywood University in Scranton. She is an author and a practitioner, working as a facilitator for dialogues in crimes of severe violence, and she is involved with churches dealing with conflict. She and her husband, Jim, live in Akron.
They have three adult children and one grandchild. Kraybill recently retired from Elizabethtown College, where he taught sociology and directed the Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies. From 2002 to 2016, he served as senior fellow at the Young Center. He is the author, co-author, and editor of approximately 30 books. His most recent book is “Eastern Mennonite University: A Century of Countercultural Education.” Don and his wife, Frances Mellinger Kraybill, have two adult daughters and two granddaughters. The event is open to the public and a freewill offering will be received. The evening is part of more than 40 Lancaster Roots 2018 events. Lancaster Roots combines the events of the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society and the 1719 Hans Herr House and Museum. Through public presentations, food, music, field trips, and classes, these events aim to reveal Lancaster and its people, including their stories, culture, and history.

chamber music competition in America.” Bigley added that the acoustics of The Trust are well suited to the group’s sound. Bigley was also excited to announce that The Kings’s Singers will perform at The Trust on Tuesday, Dec. 4, and Wednesday, Dec. 5. Bigley noted that the London-based group is the “most famous vocal ensemble in the world.” Pianist Daniel Hsu was only a teenager when he first played at The Trust during the venue’s third season. “He had just won the Concert Artists Guild award (when he performed here before), and in 2017, he won bronze in the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition,” said Bigley, who added that Hsu will be just 21 when he appears at The Trust on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2019. New York Polyphony, a four-man Grammy-nominated classical a capella group, will return to The Trust for the third time on Sunday, Feb. 17, and Monday, Feb. 18, 2019. Christopher Shih, a local physician and pianist, has invited his friend and world-class cellist Wendy Warner, along with a few others, to perform with him on Thursday, May 2, 2019. In addition, The Trust will host four dramatic presentations, including the classic comedy “The Man Who Came to Dinner” at 7:30 p.m. on the evenings of Oct. 25 to 27 and Nov. 1 to 3 and at 2 p.m. on Oct. 27 and 28 and Nov. 3. A 45minute production of “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” will be presented at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturdays from Dec. 1 to 22, with an additional 11 a.m. performance on Nov. 24. On Friday, Feb. 8, and Saturday, Feb. 9, 2019, the one-man show “Bonhoeffer in Prison” will be presented. “Freud’s Last Session,” will be presented on Friday, March 29, at 7:30p.m.; Saturday, March 30, at 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, March 31, at 2 p.m. The play, which imagines a series of meetings between Sigmund Freud and C. S. Lewis, will be staged in the mahogany-paneled board room with a fireplace. Limited tickets will be available for this theater-in-theround experience. More information about programming may be found at www.lancastertrust.com. Tickets to concerts and other Trust presentations may be purchased on the website or by calling 717-208-7835.

Youth Choir from pg 1 Indonesian partners, and MCCL determined that the risk level for the choir was low. Families of choir members were able to make the final decision on whether to allow their children to participate in the trip. Nearly all of the families decided to continue with the trip as planned. Choir members used the entire year to prepare for their third international trip with EMM’s GO! Summer program, a short-term mission exposure opportunity offered during the summer. Both local and global opportunities are available. Previous international trips included locations such as Germany, Albania, and Bulgaria. The choir’s preparation included learning several Indonesian songs and visiting the Philadelphia Indonesian Mennonite Church. Multiple fundraisers were held, including a dinner featuring authentic Indonesian cuisine. Participants were required to go through a slightly abbreviated version of the EMM application process that other short-term applicants undergo. Much like EMM’s other global workers, participants experienced discipleship, culture, and language training in preparation for the trip. The choir’s mission is to train children and youths to glorify Jesus Christ through excellent choral singing. MCCL’s five different groups - one of which is the Chamber Choir - have a total of approximately

The Chamber Choir of the Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster (MCCL) recently participated in a GO! Summer mission assignment with Eastern Mennonite Missions (EMM). The 29 participating students visited Indonesia from June 26 to July 14. The choir, directed by Rosemary Blessing, performed in four airports, multiple museums, several Mennonite churches, two cultural festivals also featuring Muslim and Buddhist performances, a rice field, the tip of a volcano, two Islamic boarding schools, a palace, and one mosque. At some of the venues, the students were able to have faith conversations with Muslims. The trip challenged participants to widen their worldviews. These interfaith experiences were organized by the director of the Indonesian Mennonite Diakonal Service, Paulus Hartono, who has worked with peacemaking and Christian-Muslim relations in his city of Solo and throughout the country for the past 20 years. Following his experience with the Chamber Choir, Hartono posted a video on Facebook proposing three languages for peace: smiles, singing, and taking pictures. The trip occurred in the wake of five bombings in the Indonesian city of Surabaya in May. Three churches were among the targets of the attacks. After intensive security analyses, EMM, its

Kate Green, Kathy Kuhns, Maureen Lewandowski, and Connie Radziewicz are just a few of the 20-plus women who make up the Teal Sisters, a multigenerational support group for women diagnosed with ovarian cancer. After crossing paths at the office of Dr. Jacqueline Evans, a Lancaster-area gynecologic oncologist, the ladies began meeting together in 2015 on the fourth Tuesday of each month to talk and support one another. Teal is the color that symbolizes ovarian cancer, so the ladies also sport the shade for Teal Tuesdays. “We met informally at each other’s houses but decided in addition to talking about where we were and laughing, we’d (raise) some awareness, because ovarian cancer is silent,” explained Green. “But we’re not silent about it.” To jumpstart those efforts, the Teal Sisters marched in the Millersville Parade in 2017, flanked by a teal pickup truck as they handed out teal mints and lollipops and information about ovarian cancer and its symptoms. According to Lewandowski, who leads educational presentations on the topic with other Teal Sisters, ovarian cancer is usually not detected until it has progressed to stage three or four, but early detection can mean the difference between life and death. Lewandowski references the BEAT acronym provided by the NormaLeah Ovarian Cancer Initiative when teaching others about the symptoms, which include: Bloating that is persistent; Eating less, feeling fuller; Abdominal and/or back pain; and Trouble with bladder and bowels. “The big thing is if the symptom lasts for more than two weeks,” emphasized Lewandowski. Many women are unaware that a Pap test does not test for ovarian cancer; therefore, Lewandowski urges women to be their own advocate and request an ovarian cancer screening if they are experiencing any symptoms. “All of our stories are different, but every single one of us at one point said something like, ‘Well, I thought it was just fill-in-theblank, but then it wouldn’t go away,’” said Lewandowski. “You don’t want to think you
have cancer.” “Most of the people in the group have ovarian cancer, but we’d like to increase awareness for all types of gynecological cancers,” Lewandowski continued. “The important thing for people to know is that there’s treatment. The doctors are very conscious of the quality of your time.” Green added, “Your life does not stop. I went to the China in the middle of my chemotherapy. There are options out there, and if one doesn’t work, you try something else.” The Teal Sisters make it a point to say they are “living with cancer” rather than the commonly heard alternative of “dying with cancer.” “We’re not gloom and doom,” said Radziewicz. In September, which is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, the Teal Sisters will take part in Turn the Towns Teal, a national campaign to promote awareness of the symptoms and risk factors associated with ovarian cancer. The ladies encourage individuals, businesses, and communities throughout Lancaster and York to get involved by displaying biodegradable teal ribbons on their property. Some towns participate by turning fountains teal or lighting up buildings at night with teal spotlights. Lewandowski recalled that the Pennsylvania State Capitol was aglow in teal for the month of September last year. The Teal Sisters will be tying teal ribbons along Hellam Street in Wrightsville and, they hope, in as many other locations as possible. To order teal ribbons and learn more about Turn the Towns Teal, readers may visit www.turnthetownsteal.org. On Friday, Sept. 7, the Teal Sisters will have an ovarian cancer awareness table at the Lancaster Barnstormers game at the team’s home stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, and one of the members will have the chance to throw the first pitch. Individuals and organizations that would like to inquire about having the Teal Sisters give an educational presentation on the risk factors and subtle symptoms of ovarian cancer may contact Radziewicz at conniesratt@comcast.net.
Organization Sets Open House At New Facility A Woman’s Concern, a local pregnancy resource center founded in 1972, has been located in downtown Lancaster on Duke Street for more than 20 years. In August, the organization opened a new location at 1102 Millersville Pike to help support the community. The new location triples the size of the center’s original home office, enabling it to reach a new quadrant of the city while expanding its programs, services, and resources to serve more families. It will still maintain a presence in Lancaster city with its East Chestnut Street satellite location. A Woman’s Concern continues to offer free,
confidential care, support, and services to women and families in need. To celebrate the opening of the new location, A Woman’s Concern will host an open house event on Sunday, Sept. 9, from 2 to 4 p.m. The event will provide an opportunity for members of the community to tour the new facilities, as well as meet the staff and some of the volunteers. The celebration will include face painting, small games for children, free diapers and wipes for anyone in need, a chance to register to win a new car seat or stroller, and an opportunity to learn about the classes and
services provided by A Woman’s Concern. The center provides free pregnancy and parenting services, including pregnancy testing, non-diagnostic ultrasound exams, parenting education, and support. Education is provided before, during, and after pregnancy. Through the Parenting Education Program, mothers and fathers can sharpen parenting skills while earning “points” for the purchase of new items for newborns and babies from the center’s baby boutique. In addition to these services, A Woman’s Concern is considering offering services to
fathers, providing additional medical services, and furthering efforts to reach out to the Latino community. Currently, a bilingual team member is available to provide parenting classes in Spanish. Appointments at A Woman’s Concern are encouraged, but walk-ins are welcome. To schedule an appointment or for more information, readers may call 717-394-1561 or visit www.pregnancylancaster.com. Those who would like to support the center or view the new facility may contact Mary Ann Albertini at maryanna@ pregnancylancaster.com.
