Siloam Ethiopia To Host Fundraising Banquet By Dayna M. Reidenouer
This is a year of firsts for Siloam Ethiopia, an organization started several years ago by Demeke Getahun and Wegayhu Ketema, a married couple that resides in Elizabethtown. From the beginning, the goal of Siloam Ethiopia has been to open a clinic offering free health care to people who live in poverty in the rural area where Ketema grew up. This year, that goal was reached when the Siloam Ethiopia Medium Clinic opened in Harar in May. The organization’s first fall banquet will also take place this year. The fundraising event has been set for Saturday, Nov. 10, at 5 p.m. at Mountville Mennonite Church, 205 Froelich Ave., Mountville. The doors will open at 4:30 p.m., and appetizers will be available while guests mingle and place bids in the silent
auction. The dinner will be a plated meal, and attendees may choose from a selection of American and Ethiopian entrees when they register at www.siloamethio.org/events. The deadline to make reservations for the banquet is Monday, Nov. 5. A cost has been set to attend the banquet, and an offering will be accepted. There will also be opportunities to sponsor clinic workers or other costs associated with running the clinic. Getahun and Ketema will present an update on the clinic, which they are visiting from Sept. 26 to Thursday, Oct. 18. The couple plans to participate in the dedication ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 13; inventory all of the supplies that have been donated to the clinic; and negotiate laboratory testing services with a local hospital. See Siloam Ethiopia pg 3
Siloam Ethiopia board members (from left) Demeke Getahun, Wegayhu Ketema, and Lindsey Teske look forward to the organization’s fall banquet set for Nov. 10 in Mountville. Proceeds will benefit the organization’s recently opened clinic that provides free health care in Harar, Ethiopia.

Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster, will host its annual Harvest Days festival from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 13 and 14. The venue will feature an assortment of educational activities, including a pumpkin patch, wagon rides, music, food, and demonstrations of historic crafts, trades, and farm chores. Harvest Days will feature demonstrations that tell the story of the historic harvest. After a fruitful summer, raw materials like apples, flax, wood, and hogs would be processed many times by hand - into usable products that would be used for food, warm clothing, or building materials. Tradespeople also made tools to supply to farmers, loggers, and other people who worked the land. Visitors to Harvest Days will be able to see these processes and more at interactive exhibits set up around the site. They may also learn about crops that matured and were processed earlier in the year, such as flax and maple sap.
Pie Sale from pg 1 for 10 types of handcrafted, 10inch, deep-dish dessert pies. Thursday, Oct. 25, has been set as the deadline for orders. The pies will be available for pickup at Lancaster County Masonic lodges in Lancaster, Quarryville, Ephrata, Elizabethtown, and Mount Joy on Tuesday, Nov. 20, from 2 to 6 p.m. This fall’s lineup includes baked and chilled minced meat, apple crumb, cherry crumb, peach crumb, and pumpkin, as well as fresh sugar-free apple, baked frozen pumpkin, and unbaked frozen apple crumb, cherry crumb, and peach crumb. The frozen pies may be stored until Christmas, although lodge member and pie project chair Bill Hackman said that he has successfully frozen pies for two years thanks to the heavy freezer bags the lodge uses to protect the baked goods.
Harvest Days, to take place at Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum on Oct. 13 and 14, will feature horse-drawn wagon rides, demonstrations of historic crafts and trades, apple tasting, and more. Visitors will be able to talk to demonstrators and take part in activities for people of all ages. Special children’s areas will include a discovery tent and the museum’s education building. Folk music will be performed, and horse-drawn wagons will take visitors around the site. One wagon will feature seats, and another will be filled with straw. Sheep shearing demonstrations will take place, and visitors may watch as fleece is sheared and then spun into yarn and made into a shawl. There will be a beekeeping demonstration with a portable hive, and a cow will be
on-site, allowing attendees to learn about the different products that her milk will produce. There will also be an opportunity to learn about hog butchering. Food may be purchased from vendors, and pumpkins may be bought from the patch to decorate. Additionally, attendees will be able to try apple varieties and watch them get processed into apple butter, cider, and pies. Separate admission fees have been set for adults, for seniors age 65 and up, and for youths ages 6 to 11. Children age 5 and under will be admitted for free. All
proceeds will benefit the museum. Situated on 100 acres, Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum is a living history crossroads village that collects, preserves, and interprets the history and material culture of the Pennsylvania German community from 1740 to 1940. The museum is administered by the PHMC with the active support of the Landis Valley Associates, a registered charitable organization. More information on Harvest Days, as well as other upcoming events, can be found at www.landis valleymuseum.org.
The Masons make their pie dough from scratch, and they use Hackman’s mother’s recipe for pumpkin pie. All of the crumbs on the fruit pies are made with butter, and the apples are peeled and sliced fresh. While some premade fillings are used, the Masons put their own twist on them, such as adding tart red cherries to the cherry pie filling. It takes at least 150 people to cover the shifts in the kitchen at the Masonic Center, 213 W. Chestnut St., Lancaster. The lodge members painstakingly build these pies to raise funds for the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster, which has offices in the Masonic Center. Pie sale proceeds account for about 40 percent of the center’s operating budget, said director Heather Hinkel. The center serves students in first through 12th grades from Lancaster, Lebanon, York, and Chester counties, remediating
dyslexia using the Orton-Gillingham method. All instruction is provided individually at no charge to clients, but it costs the center approximately $5,000 to tutor one client for a year.
To order pies or to learn more about dyslexia remediation, readers may visit www.childrens dyslexiacenteroflancaster.org, call 717-481-5680, or email cdclancasterpa@gmail.com.

Orange St., Lancaster, on Friday, Oct. 5, at 6:30 p.m. Marichelle Roque-Lutz started writing her memoir five years ago for her four daughters, and she waited two years for their approval to publish it. The 300-page memoir encompasses her life and those of her daughters in the Philippines, a three-year sojourn in Nigeria that separated her from two of her daughters, and the family’s
reunification and assimilation into American life as immigrants. Roque-Lutz previously was an associate research editor of Chicago magazine. In the Philippines, she was editor of the weekly magazine Woman’s Home Companion before marrying her second husband and immigrating to the United States in 1981. Siloam Ethiopia from pg 1 “That would be a savings of $300 a month,” Ketema said, noting that using the hospital’s lab would mean Siloam Ethiopia would not have to purchase an expensive complete blood count (CBC) machine. A CBC machine is still on the clinic’s punch list, just to be safe. Siloam Ethiopia would also like to obtain a blood chemistry machine, an autoclave, and a water purification system that would serve the entire clinic. A larger reservoir for water is also desired, as one of the services clinic workers have found themselves providing is access to bathing. It costs Siloam Ethiopia about $4 for each client visit. In the months since the clinic opened, the client base has been predominately female. “ We primarily have seen
women because women are inordinately affected by poverty,” board member Lindsey Teske said. “Ethiopia is one of six countries in the world that count for half of maternal mortality, and one out of every 64 mothers dies in childbirth.” She shared an additional statistic from the World Health Organization, reporting that in 2016, one out of every 21 babies died before their first birthday. “The good news is that rate has been getting better every year; it has been cut in half since 2010. Simple measures like prenatal vitamins and checkups make a big difference,” she said. Eventually, Siloam Ethiopia would like to make a difference in the lives of children by opening an orphanage to offer safe housing, education, and nutrition.
“There are so many children in the streets,” Ketema remarked, noting that many youths have been orphaned due to AIDS. Siloam Ethiopia’s partner in Harar - Emmanuel United Church - has already taken in several young girls. To support Siloam Ethiopia, readers may attend the banquet, sponsor or volunteer for the event by emailing Teske at teskela@mail.com, or shop for items at the organization’s booth at the craft fair hosted by the Elizabethtown Public Library, 10 S. Market St., on Friday, Oct. 12, from 5 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday, Oct. 13, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Embroidered shirts, scarves, and tablecloths from Ethiopia will be offered, and orders will be accepted for fair-trade coffee, tea, and chocolate.

Maire Chathasaigh and Chris Newman will perform a blend of traditional Irish, hot jazz, bluegrass and Baroque music on Friday, Oct. 12, at 7:30 p.m. in the Owen Salon at the Ware Center, 42. N. Prince St., Lancaster. The performance is co-presented with Susquehanna Folk Music Society. Chathasaigh is a traditional musician from Ireland. In 2001, she received Traditional Musician of the Year, a prestigious Irish music award, from Gradam Ceoil TG4. Chathasaigh began to play the harp at the age of 11. A West Cork background steeped in the oral tradition led her, while still a teenager, to develop new techniques that made it possible for the first time to play traditional music on the harp in a stylistically accurate way. She won the All-Ireland and Pan-Celtic Harp Competitions several times and in 1985 recorded a harp album concentrating on traditional Irish dance music. Newman is an English master of the acoustic guitar, a composer, an arranger, and a record producer. He began to play guitar at the age of 4, and at the age of 14, he played his first paid gig in a folk club. He has since concentrated on composition, the traditional music of the British Isles and beyond, and bluegrass and its intersection with swing. He is a regular flatpick guitar instructor and performer at Steve Kaufman’s Acoustic Kamp, held annually in Maryville, Tenn. He has been the principal guitar tutor for Newcastle University’s folk bachelor’s degree course since its inception. To purchase tickets and for more information, readers may visit www.artsmu.com or call 717-871-7600. Tickets are also available in person at the Ware Center box office and at the Student Memorial Center, Room 103, on the Millersville University campus. Pictured on front:

Park Will Host Bark For Life With the exception of a few laps walked by Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services (KPETS) canines, dogs are not allowed to take part in Relay For Life events. But some Relay For Life team members wanted to hold an event where dogs could be featured. “Relay For Life (fundraisers are typically held) at a high school, and you can’t take your dog,” lamented Angie Woolf, a member of the Misfit Bankers team. “But more often than not, a dog is someone’s caregiver. (Dogs) comfort you whether you have a cold or cancer.” To celebrate the important bond between humans and pets, especially during illness, Woolf has organized American Cancer Society Bark For Life events for the past several years. The 2018 Bark For Life of Lancaster will take place on Saturday, Oct. 6, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Manheim Township Park, 209 Petersburg Road, Neffsville. The event honors the lifelong contributions of canines to cancer survivors. Bark For Life came to Lancaster six years ago when the Captain Morgan Relay For Life team held the first event. When the Relay For Life Leadership Team took charge of the event, other Relay For Life teams began to participate. Bark For Life supports the American Cancer Society Relay
For Life of Lancaster. Funds raised through the events helps support the American Cancer Society’s mission to save lives by funding research, supporting education efforts, and providing free information and critical services for cancer patients. “My (Relay For Life) team is the Misfit Bankers,” explained Woolf. “But for Bark For Life, we are the Misfit Barkers.” According to Woolf, registration on the day of the event will begin at 8:30 a.m. At 10 a.m., there will be an opening ceremony to honor cancer survivors and caregivers, both human and canine. “We will take the opportunity to remember those we’ve lost,” said Woolf, who added that the ceremony is unifying. “There isn’t anyone who doesn’t know someone who has had cancer,” Woolf said. The somber ceremony will be followed by a type of pet parade. “ We do a Strut Your Mutt parade,” said Woolf. “(During the parade), people who register can be in the contest for biggest, smallest, cutest, (and more categories),” said Woolf. The strut will be followed by a game of musical sits and a pet trick contest dubbed Barks Got Talent. “Last year, George, a white Shih Tzu, won because when you say ‘Fire,’ he stops, drops, and rolls,” said Woolf. “That was adorable.” Paula Auerbach, whose golden retriever Rylan is a KPETS
dog, said that she got involved in Bark For Life after seeing how humans and dogs interacted when the KPETS dogs were allowed on the track at Relay For Life - Lancaster. “What was amazing to me was that during the Survivor Walk and the Caregiver Walk, there were so many people who broke ranks to hug the dogs,” she said. “People were so impressed.” Woolf added, “The dogs were very comforting to the survivors and the caregivers during their walk.” Woolf noted that past walks have attracted 80 to 100 walkers, but she hopes to see more this year. Past events have raised up to $10,000, and Woolf hopes to meet or exceed that goal this year, as well. There is a minimum per-dog registration fee to take part in Bark For Life. Owners registering multiple dogs will receive a discount after registering the first dog. Readers may register at www.relayforlife.org/barklancasterpa. Goodie bags containing items donated by vendors and sponsors of the event will be available for early registrants. Woolf noted that past goodie bags have contained dog-themed items, including dish towels, dog waste bag holders, and flying discs. Leading up to the event, participants may opt to raise funds by asking family and friends to support their efforts.

Squirewell’s work is multilayered and tackles themes such as race and memory through mythology, sacred geometry, and science. Dumlao, a visual artist working in various combined media, including film, video, sound, photography, and installation, was born in the Philippines and immigrated to the U.S. with her family. She received a bachelor’s degree in studio art and art history from Rutgers College and a master’s degree in studio art at Hunter College - CUNY. Dumlao is currently an associate professor at Bucks County Community College. Squirewell, a painter, photographer, and installation and performance artist, was born in

Squirewell is the first winner of the Rush Philanthropic and Bombay Sapphire Artisan series. The Mosaic Project, held annually since 2009, is composed of two distinct, yet interconnected components: The Mosaic Project exhibition and educational programming for high school and junior high school students. Every year, two nationally renowned artists are invited to participate in PCA&D’s Mosaic Project. These artists are selected for their commitment to creating high-quality artwork, which explores themes of individual and cultural identity. Mosaic artists from previous years are listed at
http://pcad.edu/gallery/the -mosaic-project. The educational component of The Mosaic Project is specifically for high school and middle school students. High school students from the School District of Lancaster and the Pequea Valley School District will spend a full day at PCA&D with the Mosaic Project artists, as well as PCA&D faculty and students. In addition, full scholarships will be awarded to middle school students to attend PCA&D’s Exploring the Mosaic Project studio art class on Saturdays in October. The students will have the opportunity to meet the artists and explore their own identities through art. Schreiber Pediatric held its 30th annual Rubber Duckie Race and Festival on Sept. 9. The event raised more than $115,000, which will go directly to support Schreiber’s array of therapy and educational services. This year’s Duckie Day at Lancaster County Central Park was curtailed because of heavy rain. Schreiber still managed a successful Duckie campaign because of higher-than-expected Duckie ticket sales and generous sponsorship support. Day-of sales fell short of the average total of $10,000 because of the weather, but supporters have helped erase that shortfall by making contributions after the event. The largest post-race gift came from Orrstown Bank, which had originally sponsored the event and sold tickets in its Lancaster County branches. Orrstown Bank contributed an additional $15,000. Donations can still be made via check or at www.schreiber pediatric.org/donate. This year’s event sold about 15,000 yellow and blue tickets. At the end of the festival, Schreiber ambassadors Kami Appleby, Giuliana and Paxton Grasso and

Lady Knight Booters Topple CV, 5-1 by Ara Grigorian
Kaitlin Deck scored midway into the first half off a Georgia Kielmeyer assist as Hempfield went on to beat Cedar Crest 2-0. Kielmeyer, a freshman, scored the team’s second goal, capitalizing on Lauren Weaver’s assist. Yoder made two more saves, recording a shutout. In a Saturday morning game at Manheim Central, Weinoldt recorded another multi-goal game, helping
Hempfield to a 2-1 non-league victory. Deck assisted on both goals. “She scored twice against Conestoga Valley and scored two on Saturday as well,” Mackey noted. “She is becoming more of a scoring threat for us. Jess has always been great at setting up other people; now she is capitalizing on opportunities herself.” The Barons did press and managed seven shots on goal. Yoder was up to
When you’re trying to hang on to first place in the standings, it’s always prudent to defeat the teams that are chasing you. Hempfield girls’ soccer coach Jason Mackey would subscribe to that, especially after the Black Knights set down Conestoga Valley in Monday’s match at Landisville. Both teams held a record of 3-0-1 against Section One opponents. “It was at a time where we were tied with them at the top of the section,” Mackey explained. “They got up on us 1-0. But from that point on, our girls responded well and played a dominant and complete game. It showed on the scoreboard as well.” The scoreboard showed Hempfield 5, Conestoga Valley 1. Madison Delgado scored five minutes into the match, giving CV the Photo by Jeremy Madea early lead. The Hempfield chances resulted in Hempfield’s Sarah McCullough gets a kick away in front of Jessica Weinoldt scoring the equalizer Conestoga Valley’s Ana Weiss during the Black Knights’ 5-1 in the 21st minute. It didn’t take long for Hempfield to strike again as junior Megan Grube scored less than a minute later. “The ball came to Jess at the top of the 18 and she had a nice shot that went past their keeper,” Mackey explained. “Shortly after that, Megan was able to bend one in the far post from the corner of the 18.” Gabi Hollinger, who also had an assist in the game, capped the scoring less than eight minutes later. I was always fascinated by the relationship between our (Hebrew) people and the eternal Creator of heaven and earth. When we as a people were obedient to our Creator’s mandates for our lives everything went well. Whenever we decided to go our own way we suffered tribulation. It seemed that we as His chosen people were always screwing up. I realize that it is because of the love of the Lord, shown to us since we were separated as a people, that the nations of the world in their jealousy persecuted us. I have made an exhaustive study of the Feast days in an effort to find our creator’s heart toward us. You must read this book. It examines the Levitical feasts and the effect our Creator intended them to have on ancient Israel, and the effect He wanted them to have on us, and all the world. It is my prayer that a better understanding of these feasts will increase your appreciation of our creator’s glorious salvation for our people and all mankind. Anyone can download a free copy of the book Reflections on Our Holy Holidays by Lloyd Elias Scalyer. You may choose a pdf file, an ePUB file compatible with most eBook readers, or both. Instructions to do this are as follows: Go to the homepage of the website for Lititz Institute, www.lititzinstitute.org. On the homepage there is a rotating picture at the top of the page. The second picture which comes up is one of the book and the caption “Discover the Great Feasts of our Jewish Heritage.” Click on the lower right corner of this picture for a free download. Depending on your Internet speed loading the second page is variable, but in most cases the picture changes several times a minute. After clicking, you will come to a page with a copy of the book and a heading “Free EBook.” Immediately below this is the option to downlod the book. If you choose the pdf file, note the first two pages are blank; and there is no cover. If you have problems or questions, contact Lititz Institute by e-mail via the website.

MCCL Registration Posted The Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster (MCCL) is accepting registrations for its two non-auditioned programs: Prelude Music for children in kindergarten through grade one, and Choristers I and II for grades two to eight. These classes provide vocal instruction that expands the musical, social, and spiritual growth of every singer. Classes meet Tuesday evenings from late September through November and again from late January through April. MCCL serves more than 170 singers in its two non-auditioned classes and three auditioned choirs. The performing choirs include singers in Carol Choir, grades two to five; Concert Choir, grades six to eight; and Chamber Choir, grades nine to 12. The performing choirs practice weekly throughout the school year in preparation for a concert series in early December and in the spring. The non-auditioned class-
es are led by interim director Jonathan Shoff and director Kit Baker. Shoff earned his bachelor’s degree in music education from Millersville University with a concentration in piano and a minor in voice. He also holds a Master of Music from West Chester University. Shoff teaches elementary school music in the School District of Lancaster. He teaches private instrumental and voice lessons, and serves as artistic director for the Music For Everyone Lancaster Community Chorus. Shoff also serves as director for Men’s Ensemble and accompanist for Chamber Choir of MCCL. Baker holds a bachelor’s degree in music education from Messiah College and completed a master’s degree in music education from Kent State University. She teaches general music and chorus for elementary grades in the Lampeter-Strasburg
CCAP Awards Slated The County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania (CCAP) recently bestowed Criminal Justice System for the 21st Century Best Practices Awards. The 2018 Best Practices Award in the large county jail category was presented to Lancaster County Prison for their PrisonStat Program, an active leadership strategy to achieve transparency, accountability, and efficiency at the prison, drive real measurable results, and help turnaround within the organization. First initiated in 2016, PrisonStat is modeled on the Performance Stat idea which is an active leadership model that uses an ongoing series of regular meetings during which the chief executive and/or leadership team uses current data to analyze aspects of an organization’s performance. This continuing analysis of predetermined metrics produces results by pushing the organization toward performance targets. It also provides leaders with the ability to articulate to the organization and public what improved results need to be demonstrated. Each department head is assigned a metric pertaining to their job description, and are responsible for oversight of a specific area. They are held accountable during the public meeting scheduled every two months and their performance is transparent for the public to see whether positive or negative. An Honorable Mention in the
large jail category was awarded to Berks County Prison for their Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Certification. With their rising mental health population, they recognized a need to improve staff training and education about signs and symptoms of mental illness, for all staff, especially custody supervisors and correctional officers. Staff was trained through Mental Health First Aid USA, an eight-hour course that teaches a five-step action plan encompassing the skills, resources and knowledge to help an individual in crisis connect with appropriate professional, peer and self-help care. This approach is demonstrating results throughout the prison and better outcomes for both inmates and staff. The 2018 recipient of the Juvenile Alternatives Program Award is Lancaster County for their P.U.L.S.E. Evening Treatment Center. Lancaster County’s Juvenile Court, the Office of Juvenile Probation, and the Children and Youth Agency were experiencing a reduced accessibility to specialized programs, as well as the closure of some residential facilities. This resulted in their need to seek out opportunities to keep low to moderate risk juveniles within close proximity to home and community resources which could parallel the successful outcomes of longterm placements. The Youth Intervention Center initially developed the P.U.L.S.E.

Weekend Program with the objective of providing short-term, evidence-based treatment with the goal of diverting juveniles away from the need for long-term placements. The participant’s goals, program length, and groups will be determined based on recommendations from the juvenile probation officer or children and youth caseworker, consultation with the parents/guardians, and results of various assessments. The youths participate in evidence-based programs, as well as psycho-educational groups. The results are demonstrated in improved outcomes for juveniles and their families. The Partner Award recipient is Carolyn McKenna, director of development at Home of the Sparrow in Chester County. Trauma histories, substance use, housing and self-sufficiency are among the challenges facing women’s successful re-entry from incarceration in Chester County’s criminal justice system. Partnering with the County Criminal Justice System, Home of the Sparrow provides
case management services to women re-integrating into their communities following the Collaborative Casework-Women Model developed by the National Institute of Corrections. Home of the Sparrow embraces the philosophy that case management for justice-involved women should be a dynamic, seamless process from entry into the system and continue until the woman is stabilized in her community with the goal of not only reducing criminal behavior but increasing the health and well-being of women, their families, and community. They provide a comprehensive case management model that addresses the complex and multiple needs of women involved with the justice system, recognizing that women have strengths that can be mobilized, while matching services in accordance with risk level and need. CCAP salutes everyone involved in these efforts for being innovative pioneers in meeting the challenges facing all county jails and juvenile justice providers.
