’Tis The Season For Christmas At Salem By Dayna M. Reidenouer

For the first few decades after Christmas at Salem was launched, the members of Salem United Church of Christ (UCC) of Rohrerstown, 2312 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, created all of the wares for sale. “We spent all year working on them,” recalled church member Marty Sheetz. “All the tables were full.” The volunteers are increasing in age and decreasing in number, but they are still involved with hosting the annual Christmas at Salem. Now, however, the tables in the fellowship hall and throughout the church building are filled by vendors. The 33rd Christmas at Salem will be held on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and vendor coordinator Eileen Shipe noted that more than 35 vendors are slated to participate in the bazaar,

representing a mix of handcrafters and direct sales businesses. Vendors will sell jewelry, ornaments, wreaths, papercrafts, clothing, pillows, Santa and Grinch scarves, used books, painted tiles, and wooden items. Boy Scout Troop 64 will have a table where attendees may register to sponsor wreaths that will be laid at veterans’ graves in December. Surprise balls - featuring small items that are wrapped into solid paper spheres - are a new product at Christmas at Salem. “I’ll have to take more time off (from serving that day) so I can go around and look at everything,” Sheetz remarked. A silent auction will run during the bazaar. Items up for bids will include wreaths, a bird feeder, a carved walking stick, an afghan, a knitted shawl, and a painted slate. There will also be opportunities to win a king-size, Amish-made See Christmas At Salem pg 6

It’s not,” Mokros-Rathgeb said. “For the past 10 years, I have been able to give back to the fire company and the community without going on any fire calls.”

East Petersburg Mennonite Church will host its fourth annual Community Fall Bonfire and Block Party on Wednesday, Oct. 31, from 6 to 9 p.m. The event will be open to everyone and will feature a bounce house, barrel train rides, candy, baked goods, hot beverages, roaring fire pits, and more. “I look forward to this event every year,” said pastor Jeff McLain. “So many of our neighbors and friends stop in on a cold night to find themselves warmed up through friendship and just being together. That’s what this event is all about.” Local residents are invited to stop by, hang out, and warm up by the fire pits in the parking lot of the church, 6279 Main St., East Petersburg. Guests may drop in and out as they trick-ortreat or stay for the whole time. “This is one night of the year that so many of our neighbors are already out and interacting with each other. For

By Dayna M. Reidenouer

The mission of The Cottage is to provide assistance to women in crisis and their dependent children as they search for permanent housing. Before that can happen, however, the organization, which is incorporated under the auspices of Millersville Community Church, must find its own dwelling. “We would accept (the donation of) a house or other buildings that can be converted (into a multi-family dwelling) within the Penn Manor area,” said board member Bob Young. “We want to keep families within the district,” explained interim executive director and co-founder Diane Duell. “Moving children out of their school is adding more trauma to the situation.” Duell and her co-founder, lay pastor Judy Schroeder, envision The Cottage as a place where women who have to leave home in a hurry - such as those escaping domestic violence - can stay to get their bearings and plan what to do next. Duell has met with the directors of women’s shelters and transitional housing programs to receive education and advice. She noted that most of the pre-existing organizations work with women who are already homeless. “We do not see ourselves as competitors but as collaborators,” Duell said. “This is potentially the next step for preventing homelessness.” Schroeder and Duell connected

at the altar at Millersville Community Church after a worship service on Jan. 29, 2017, when director of outreach ministry Bruce Heydt preached a sermon, “Keep Calm and Dream On: God’s Promises Are Stronger Than Our Fears,” that referenced “Big, hairy, audacious goals (BHAGs).” Duell felt compelled to set a BHAG, and helping vulnerable women seemed like just the thing to do. Through her experiences as a lay pastor, Schroeder had seen a need for emergency housing, so the two decided to team up. After organizing according to the requirements set by the church council, the ministry held its first board meeting on April 14, 2018. Along the way, the board has also been mentored by SCORE. The date the first family moves in will be dependent upon obtaining a facility and its condition. In preparation for purchasing or accepting the donation of a home and then completing necessary renovations, the board has set a fundraising goal of $100,000 by Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2019. So far, it has received a bit more than $10,000. The proceeds from a beef stroganoff meal on Saturday, Nov. 3, will contribute to the fund. Board chair Ed Sykes and his wife, board secretary Judy Sykes, are coordinating the event. “I did this many times years ago,” Ed remarked. “I multiplied my aunt’s recipe for large groups.” The dinner will be held in the Family Life Center at Millersville Community Church’s Grace Campus, 163 W. Frederick St.,

Millersville. Seatings will take place at 5:15 and 6:30 p.m. The plated meal will feature beef stroganoff with mushrooms and onions over noodles with sides of peas, coleslaw, and applesauce. Various desserts will be available to conclude the meal. A slideshow presentation will be shown to inform attendees about The Cottage and its progress. Tickets are required for admission, and Monday, Oct. 29, has been set as the deadline to purchase them. On the evening of the event, tickets will be available at the door as supplies last. To purchase tickets, readers may contact a board member, stop by the church office at the Grace Campus, or call the office at 717872-4571. The board is accepting new members and other folks who would like to volunteer to help get The Cottage running smoothly. Members are needed for committees focused on fundraising, marketing and media relations, policy, property search and management, and finance. The board has an immediate need for an individual with marketing and grant writing experience. For more information about The Cottage or to purchase tickets, volunteer, or be added to the mailing list, readers may email millersvillecottage@gmail.com. Pictured on front: The board of directors of The Cottage, a new temporary housing program, will host a beef stroganoff meal in Millersville on Nov. 3 to raise money to purchase a facility to house women in crisis and their children.

Three batches of beef potpie and 13 of chicken potpie are slated to be made. That is an increase of two chicken batches, approximately 220 quarts, from the sale in February, which sold out entirely. The entrees are made from scratch and cooked in two industrial kettles. As volunteers prepare for the fundraiser, Mokros-Rathgeb is hoping that Nov. 3 will be a dry day. “Humidity can affect dough,” Mokros-Rathgeb said. “The weather can be a factor. It can be tricky; people don’t realize it.” Folks are invited to come out to the potpie takeout event and bid farewell to Mokros-Rathgeb and make Yocum’s acquaintance. “And fill out a volunteer form,” Yocum said. As Yocum looks toward beginning her tenure, she said that she plans to keep the fundraising calendar the same as it has been in previous years, but she would like to eventually add a summer event. The twiceyearly potpie sales are slated to continue as well. While Mokros-Rathgeb chose to serve behind the scenes, her replacement, Kiersten Yocum, opted to go in another direction. Yocum joined the fire company last year and became a member of the fire police and the organization’s secretary. She is now training to be a firefighter. Yocum lives on the edge of the borough and decided to sign up after seeing a “ W hy Not You?” advertisement in the Merchandiser. “I was looking for a volunteer opportunity,” Yocum explained. “I didn’t know what I was doing, but they’ve been showing me what to do.” Volunteers are needed to help the fire company run smoothly and to protect community resources. There are a wide range of capacities in which folks may serve. “Volunteering with the fire company isn’t just putting out fires,” Yocum remarked. “We desperately need people on the administrative side.” Yocum will officially become chair of the ways and means committee at the start of 2019. Mokros-Rathgeb’s final event in that position will be the fall potpie takeout sale, which will be held on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. or until the food is sold out. The parade theme is “Story Time” in honor of the newly expanded Columbia Public Library. The parade will feature five divisions with at least one band in each division. The Columbia Lions Club and Sunsnappers will award cash prizes to the top three winners in various categories, including baton groups, floats, walking groups, and individuals. John Grunden, Lions Club treasurer, explained that judges are anonymous and roam the parade route to rate contestants on their overall appearance and performance. This helps to ensure that parade viewers get a fair representation of what each unit has to offer, including components that might have been missed along the route if the entrants were to save their best performance for a specific reviewing area. Nonprofit organizations will sell food along the parade route. In the case of rain, the parade will take place on Monday, Oct. 29. Landis will also talk about the large mausoleum in the cemetery that often catches people’s attention. Though the date it was built remains unknown, Landis said that it belonged to Dr. and Mrs. Grove, who were great benefactors of Marietta. Dr. Grove was a local physician in Marietta before moving to Philadelphia. Landis speculates he gained the inspiration for the mausoleum there, as cemeteries in bigger cities at that time would have been more likely to have similarly elaborate structures. Historian James Landis will lead a walkHistorical research ing tour of the Marietta Cemetery for the next Marietta Town Talk on Oct. 28. is something Landis Landis will discuss the people buried has been conducting there and various aspects of the property, for nearly 45 years. “I including a mausoleum with stained came from a very hisglass (pictured) that often catches the torically minded famiattention of passersby. ly, and I’ve always been very interested in history and genealogy,” said Landis, that was founded in 1919. The Marietta Town Talk series will continue on Sunday, Oct. 28, with “History in Repose,” a cemetery tour led by historian James Landis. The community is invited to meet at the Fairview Avenue entrance to the Marietta Cemetery for a lively tour of the property. Admission is free. In the case of rain, the event will take place indoors at the Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St., Marietta. “This is going to be about real, authentic history, focusing on some of the people that are buried in the cemetery and stories that are going to be entertaining,” explained Landis, emphasizing that it will not be a ghost tour. Landis published “The Cemeteries of Marietta, PA,” an inventory of all of Marietta’s cemeteries in 2012, in conjunction with the bicentennial of the founding of the borough. The book has more than 600 pages with detailed records of the cemeteries in Marietta. “The bicentennial was what piqued my interest for Marietta,” Landis commented. “Marietta is a very interesting place, and the cemetery is just one aspect of that.” According to Landis, the eightacre property of the Marietta Cemetery is home to approximately 4,800 marked graves.

While at one time a register existed for the cemetery, Landis said the story goes that the records disappeared never to be seen again after a fight between individuals in the borough many years ago. Thanks to Landis’ research, folks seeking information on those buried in the grounds may now refer to the complete inventory in his book. Copies are available to view in the Marietta Borough Office, 11 E. Market St.; at Marietta Restoration Associates, 3 W. Walnut St.; and at several local historical societies. “One really special aspect of the cemetery is the number of veterans that are buried there,” stated Landis. “Marietta has a very long tradition of its residents serving in the military.” “There are just all sorts of stories,” Landis continued. “The history of the cemetery is a bit more complicated than you might think, and it actually incorporates two properties.” A portion of land adjacent to the northwest corner of the Marietta Cemetery that Landis said is often mistaken as being part of the cemetery is actually under different ownership. At one time, that portion of the grounds belonged to the Wesley African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Zion Church and had a church and school building along with several gravesites.

Knight Gridders Pull Away From Penn Manor by Ara Grigorian

What a difference a couple of weeks make! Two weeks ago, the Hempfield football team suffered a 26-16 loss to Section One foe Wilson on the road. The loss came after the Black Knights had righted the ship, rebounding from a 1-3 start to even their mark at 3-3. Ever since that setback, the Knights

have outscored their opponents by a collective score of 86-20 and have improved to 5-4. Their 49-14 defeat of Penn Manor on Friday, upped the team’s Lancaster-Lebanon League mark to 3-2 with a Section One showdown looming large on Friday against Section One arch rival Manheim Township. Hempfield broke open a 21-7 halftime lead by scoring 21 points in the

third quarter alone. Colin Peters had 162 passing yards and tailback Matt Heuston ran for 115 yards on 13 carries, scoring three touchdowns. “With a one-back offense, we do a lot of zone reads,” head coach Ron Zeiber explained, referring to his one-man backfield of Heuston. “If they key on him, we’ll run something else - there could be two or three other places the ball can go like a pass to the outside or have the quarterback run it.” The quarterback did run it in from 10 yards out for the Knights’ first score of the game. Peters, who finished with 87 rushing yards on 12 carries, also engineered two more scoring drives in the first half, both of which ended on impressive TD runs by Heuston - seven yards and 22 yards out. The Comets finally put up some points as Stephen Albright caught a 68-yard TD pass from Luke Braas (8-for-16, 156 yards 2 TD’s). The three touchdowns in the third quarter were the results of a 39-yard run by Heuston, an 80-yard reception by Darien Ressler and a one-yard

surge by Mike Kurtz. “We were moving the ball and picking up first downs,” Zeiber said. “There were a couple of opportunities we missed, but for the most part, our guys stepped up and did the job.” Asked if the big rushing touchdowns by Heuston indicated the offensive scheme leaning toward finding openings for him, Zeiber replied, “Well, they’re all designed on the board to score, but they don’t always result in a score. Matt is the one back in there and he had a big game. He also had one called back for 75 yards on a penalty - not that it was a bad call. He was certainly ready to go and had a great game.” Following Manor’s only score of the second half, the Knights responded on a big play - a 50-yard dash to the end zone by junior Sam Hess. The receivers whom Peters found were Ressler (116 yards), and Luke Miller (42 yards) with three and four receptions, respectively. “Ressler had a big game,” Zeiber added. “He was able to get open and we were able to get open deep. Peters did a great job. It was well balanced

and that’s how the stats came out.” Zeiber addressed the Knights’ hopes of reaching the district playoffs. “We’re still in a position to get ourselves into the playoffs,” said Zeiber whose team is right on the bubble as the ninth-ranked team in the District Three 6A power rankings. “A win this week could get us in. We try to tell our kids that it’s like a playoff game for us - that our playoffs begin a week early. We cannot make a lot of mistakes against Manheim Township; they’re a good team.” The Blue Streaks improved to 4-1 in league play with a defeat of McCaskey and are 8-1 overall. GIRLS’ SOCCER The Black Knights had won their opening-round league playoff game over Annville-Cleona the previous week when they squared off against Elco on Tuesday evening. In a league semifinal match at Manheim Township, the Elco Raiders edged the Knights 1-0 and went on to top Conestoga Valley two days later for the school’s first L-L League girls’ soccer championship. Elco held Hempfield to only three

shots on goal while the Raiders recorded eight of their own. With nearly nine minutes gone in the second half, Katelyn Rueppel broke the scoreless tie, giving the Raiders their eventual margin of victory. Meg Yoder made seven saves in a losing cause. Maddy Bailey made three saves for Elco, to secure the shutout. Hempfield fell to 11-6-1 overall. The Knights wrapped up the regular season and their run into the L-L League postseason with a ninthplace spot in the District Three 4A power rankings. League rival Conestoga Valley edged the Knights in the rankings and is scheduled to play host to Hempfield in the first round of districts this week. CROSS COUNTRY The Hempfield girls’ cross country team finished fourth while the boys’ took fifth in the L-L League Championship meet held at Ephrata on Tuesday. With a grouping that proved to be helpful, the girls had five runners cross the finish line in a span of 17 runners. Leading the team, however, was Delaney Minder. The freshman

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL Having clinched the Section One crown, the Black Knights wrapped up the regular season schedule with a victory and headed into the L-L League volleyball playoffs. The regular season wound down with wins over Cedar Crest and McCaskey followed by a league playoff win at Lancaster Mennonite where the Knights blanked Lampeter-Strasburg 3-0 on Friday.

The win at Crest started off with a rather easy 25-15 win, but was followed with two tougher sets that Hempfield won 25-22 and 25-20. Kylie Ulrich led the Knights with 10 kills and two blocks. In digs it was Allison Cummings racking up 11 while Emma Bitner was solid all evening, distributing 31 assists and serving up four aces. The defeat of McCaskey was a dominant one as the Knights pulled away 25-8, 25-4 and 25-5. They finished with a 12-0 regular season record. Ella Deck had six aces as did Bitner, who recorded 22 assists. Cummings came through with five digs. Hempfield opened the playoffs by making a statement in victories of 25-8, 25-16 and 25-4 on Friday. The Knights were led by Claire Flood’s 11 kills and two blocks as well as Bitner’s 15 assists. The seventh-seeded Black Knights faced second seed Manheim Township in Monday’s quarterfinals at Racquet Club West. The Streaks prevailed 3-1 in the three singles, two doubles format of district play. Amanda Hagino won the first singles 6-2, 6-1for Hempfield’s only team point. In doubles competition, Nicole Honrade and Juliea Briner topped Hempfield’s Tierney Cantwell and Sarah Shaub 6-1, 6-1 while Karlin McHugh and Joanna Newton came up short at second doubles 6-0, 6-2. The second singles did not finish thanks to MT sophomore Scotland Reynolds winning the third singles and claiming the third team point necessary for a win. In the girls’ doubles championships, Lehman and Tierney Cantwell topped fourth-seeded twosome Michelle Timothy and Janay Lewis of Conrad Weiser 2-6, 7-6, 6-4 on Friday.
