The GateHouse Promotes Addiction Recovery By Dayna M. Reidenouer

November is set to be a busy month for The GateHouse, whose mission is to restore the human spirit through recovery. On Nov. 1, the organization’s main office moved into the fifth floor of the Griest Building, 8 N. Queen St., Lancaster, and the office’s previous home at 817 N. Cherry St., Lancaster, is being converted into a center for behavioral health services. Members of the public may tour the new headquarters from 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 16, as part of the Extraordinary Give. During The GateHouse’s ExtraGive Soiree, attendees may enjoy refreshments and learn about the mission, vision, and values the organization has offered since 1972 to L a n caster County residents who struggle with addiction.

Then, on Thanksgiving Eve, which is Wednesday, Nov. 21, The GateHouse will host the 39th annual TurkeyThon from 7 p.m. to midnight. According to development manager Rick Yanchuleff, the day before Thanksgiving has historically seen the heaviest usage of drugs and alcohol by folks who are struggling with the emotions and realities of the holiday. TurkeyThon was created to celebrate recovery through fun, food, and fellowship. A complete turkey dinner will be served, and AA and NA meetings will be held all evening. Breakout sessions will be held on the hour, and some will have guest speakers. Counselors will be available to speak with guests. Folks may drop in at any time, and there is no charge to participate. Games and other fun activities will be available for children. See The GateHouse pg 7

The GateHouse staff members (from left) Kesha-Payne Ward, Kristi Martarano, Sheri Piefly, and Rick Yanchuleff invite folks to visit the Mountville facility for the 39th annual TurkeyThon on Nov. 21. The residential substance abuse treatment organization will welcome online donations through the Extraordinary Give on Nov. 16.

It is exciting to welcome an author who has recently released such a great book, especially one that is tied to as familiar a story as ‘Practical Magic.’” See Author’s Luncheon pg 5

fair will be shared between the two organizations, which have begun to work together to meet the needs of cats in Lancaster County. Approximately 110 felines are being cared for by the combined network of foster homes. Furever Home operates a facility at 5984 Main St., East Petersburg, where about 25 cats live without cages as they wait to be adopted. Pet Pantry, located at 26 Millersville Road, Lancaster, can house approximately 35 cats on-site and runs a veterinary suite and a thrift store as well. Eventually, Pet Pantry would like to move to a new facility where the two organizations could combine efforts under one roof. “We have a lot of duplication of services, Meinzer explained. Sanders shared that Pet Pantry needs to buy a truck to haul the new mobile unit, which enables veterinarians to offer spay/ neuter clinics away from headquarters. Sponsors for the truck are welcome, and Sanders invited folks unable to attend the shopping fair to donate to the Pet Pantry as part of the Extraordinary Give on Friday, Nov. 16. On that day, donations may be made at www.extragive.org. Krueger noted that Furever Home and Pet Pantry are always looking for sponsors, volunteers, and donors. “You can have (photo cards) ready for Christmas, suggested Pet Pantry executive director Melody Sanders. Another first for the event is the addition of a variety of hot and cold foods for people. The menu is being finalized, but it will represent Lancaster County, Krueger said. “Come hungry, invited Furever Home executive director MJ Meinzer. The first 100 adult attendees will receive goodie bags. While admission to the shopping fair is free of charge, attendees are asked to bring items to donate to the two organizations. The wish list includes bleach, toilet paper, paper towels, liquid or powder kitten formula, canned kitten food, dry cat food, and dry dog food. “This is the first time we’re actually having a shortage of dog food, Sanders remarked. The Pet Pantry routinely distributes pet food to more than 200 households from four locations in Lancaster and Chester counties. To encourage contributions, people who donate items at the shopping fair will be rewarded with entries in a prize drawing. The hosting organizations will also benefit in another way at the event. A company evaluating the user-friendliness of packaging will give a donation to Furever Home and Pet Pantry for each adult age 50 or older who takes a dexterity test. The proceeds from the shopping

Schreiber Announces New Name

Teachers and students from Schreiber’s Circle of Friends Academy sang at the Oct. 25 event during which Schreiber announced its new name - Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development - and introduced its new logo. Schreiber Pediatric Rehab Center of Lancaster County has announced that it has a new name: Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development. The organization that is called Schreiber today has been around since 1936. In those 82 years, it has gone by several different names, adopting its most recent name, Schreiber Pediatric Rehab Center of Lancaster County, in 1994. In the nearly 25 years since, Schreiber has experienced many changes and a lot of growth. The center now sees more children than ever and sees children with a wider array of diagnoses. The center underwent a major expansion in 2006, and it has added new services, including aquatic therapy and the Circle of Friends Academy day care center. The organization’s new mission statement reads: “We provide everything needed for all of life’s challenges, so that families and children can reach their dreams and vision. We see every child’s unique capabilities and help them achieve their fullest potential.” That new mission statement guided the conversations about finding a new name

to reflect the breadth of services Schreiber provides. After numerous meetings, a stakeholder survey, and a final review by the board, the center made the switch to the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development. The center also adopted a new logo. Schreiber has also announced that donations it receives during the Extraordinary Give on Friday, Nov. 16, will go directly to the therapy services that help thousands of children each year. The organization is also asking supporters who are able to make a second donation to Schreiber to do so, and these additional monies will go to the Schreiber Endowment Fund. The endowment started with a $100,000 gift in 2014, and it is now approaching $750,000. A goal has been set to reach $1 million by next year, which will be a major milestone in the effort to secure Schreiber’s long-term financial future. For information on donating during the Extraordinary Give, readers may visit www.extragive.org. For more information about Schreiber, readers may visit www.schreiberpediatric.org.

Schreiber Ambassador parent Andrea Grasso talked about what Schreiber has meant to her and her family. Grasso was joined by her son Paxton, who receives services at Schreiber.

A local bookseller will be on-site with many of Hoffman’s titles for sale. Beginning in 1977 with the publication of her first novel, “Property Of,” Hoffman has published nearly 40 books for readers in a range of ages. “Practical Magic” was published in 1995 and was made into a feature film starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman in 1998. The story’s prequel, “The Rules of Magic,” was released in 2017. “We hope to hear Ms. Hoffman speak about her experience as an author, the differences between writing adult and Young Adult books, and the role that libraries have had in her life,” McGarry remarked. McGarry noted that this is the 16th annual author’s lun-

ceeds from the event will support the mission and vision of the Junior League of Lancaster by helping to promote volunteerism, develop the potential of women, and improve the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Current and past projects include Girls + STEM, the Rain Garden Initiative, Wheatland and Rock Ford Plantation restorations, the Children’s Room at Lancaster County Library, and the Hands-on House Children’s Museum of Lancaster outdoor classroom. In addition, this year the Junior League has partnered with Reach Out and Read, which is a program that provides new books to children from birth to age 5 during well-child pediatrician visits at various local doctor’s offices. Luncheon guests are invited to bring new, age-appropriate books to donate to Reach Out and Read. Each book may be traded for a free entry in a prize drawing, up to three entries per person. The Millersville Woman’s Club will hold its next meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 20, at 7 p.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 222 N. George St., Millersville. The meeting will also be the club’s annual Men’s Night, so women attending are welcome to bring a male companion. The program will focus on a virtual reality farm tour developed by a group of Penn Manor high school and middle school students. They were chosen by Google to test the latest version of its virtual reality tool, Tour Creator. Some of those students, along with Shelby Foster, a district technology specialist, will discuss how they created the tour, which features 360degree images. Google recently featured the farming tour in the rollout of its latest version of Tour Creator. Also welcome to attend are area women interested in learning more about this project and the club, which has a main goal of raising funds for scholarships and educational projects. Guests wishing to attend should call 717-9924188 prior to that evening.

The GateHouse from pg 1 “It’s a family event,” Yanchuleff said. “Addiction affects everyone.” The festivities will take place in a large tent set up on the lawn of The GateHouse Mountville, 465 W. Main St., Mountville. Parking will be located across the street in the lots of Froelich Park and Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ. The GateHouse is also working to further expand its facilities. Currently, The GateHouse runs a halfway house for approximately 20 men in Lititz and one for about 20 women in Mountville, but a new halfway house will soon be opened in the Rockefeller mansion in Marietta. The new home will have a capacity for 30 women, and the Mountville house will become a facility for men. At all of the houses, clients arrive just after they have completed detox. Once they successfully conclude a 90day stay, the clients move into one of four transitional living houses in Lancaster city. After they graduate from that stage of the program, clients may live on their own while receiving intensive outpatient treatment. Yanchuleff noted that the

treatment program is customized to each individual. “They’re not run through a cookie-cutter process,” he said. The GateHouse is a nonprofit organization that is not specifically faith-based, but God plays an integral role in the recovery process, Yanchuleff said. Clients participate voluntarily; they are not committed. The GateHouse accepts medical assistance and some insurances as well as safe pay. To offset costs and increase awareness of the organization, Yanchuleff is working to develop a donor base. “Generally, people in recovery know of The GateHouse, but (others) don’t,” he remarked. The hope is that through events like the ExtraGive Soiree and TurkeyThon, members of the public will become familiar with The GateHouse and seek out ways to support the organization and its clients. For more information about The GateHouse, readers may visit www.gatehouse.org or call 717393-3215. Folks who would like to donate or volunteer may contact Yanchuleff at rick@gatehouse.org or 717-205-3026.

Soccer, Volleyball Teams Stumble in State Playoffs by Ara Grigorian

With their third straight trip to the boys’ soccer state championships, the Hempfield Black Knights were poised to pursue yet another PIAA Class 4A bid. The state playoffs began at Hempfield Area High School in Greensburg where they faced Seneca Valley in an exciting match that was decided in double overtime. Though the host school for this game was the namesake of the Lancaster-Lebanon League school from Landisville, the outcome went in favor of the WPIAL champion Raiders. Keegan McVicker scored the game-winning goal in double overtime, giving the Raiders a 3-2 victory over the Knights, who ended their season at 14-5. Seneca Valley was coming off an emotional 5-2 win over Norwin, giving the Raiders their first WPIAL championship. The Knights entered the state tournament as the fourth seed out of District Three.

“It was a tough, long bus ride home - literally and figuratively,” said Hempfield head coach Mark Ashley. “It was easier to swallow that tough loss, knowing we had played one of our best games.” The Knights jumped out on top early in the match on a Cameron Graybill goal less than five minutes in. “It was a nice cross from Drew Johnson,” Ashley explained. “Their player knocked it down with a header, but Cameron was able to come in and steal it from their defender.” The Knights held that lead until the final minutes of the first half. “We scored first and did a nice job of defending for most of the first half, giving up a goal late in the half,” Ashley added. Ryan Hepler’s goal was the equalizer for Hempfield after the Raiders had taken a 2-1 lead midway into the second half. “It was from 25 yards out,” described the Hempfield coach. “It was a beautiful shot and their keeper didn’t have a chance.”

That game-tying goal came with seven minutes left in regulation. The Knights were dominating the second half. “We had all the momentum at that point,” said Ashley. “I thought if this was going to go overtime that we would be in good shape. “In both overtime periods we did out-shoot them,” he added. “We out-shot and out-cornered them in the second half as well.” The goal came off a corner kick for Seneca Valley. “We got the initial clearance, but we cleared it centrally,” Ashley explained. “They were running in as our guys were coming out of the box. It was a tough blow.” Seneca Valley went on to defeat Abington on Saturday, advancing to the state semifinals against Radnor. Ashley spoke of the different types of styles his squad and the Raiders played. “Their goalkeeper would punt it from their 18 to almost our 18,” he said. “They would win the long balls often. It was an interesting contrast

with two different styles.” Speaking of goalkeepers, Ashley had plenty of praise for Tristan Green’s performance in front of the Hempfield net. “Tristan Green had his best game of the year,” Ashley remarked. “He was able to keep us in the game and stopped a number of dangerous shots.” The Knights’ roster will see the departure of several seniors, including Hepler, Johnson, Graybill, Jake Suchar, Alex Garcia, Nebeyu Bekere, Noah Bennett, and Sam Doehring as well as goalies Green, Brady Ross and Grant Doehring “Certainly we lose a lot of key seniors,” Ashley noted. “We had a big group of seniors last year. It doesn’t necessarily mean a rebuilding year because the younger players got a taste of playing at the higher level.” GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL Another Hempfield squad that saw its season come to an end in the first round of states was the girls’ volleyball team. Hempfield entered the

PIAA Class 4A playoffs with a 19-1 record, having suffered its first loss in the District Three 4A semifinals before defeating South Western 3-0 in the consolation match on November 3. The third-seeded team out of District Three traveled to Upper Dublin High School Tuesday night to face Bishop Shanahan. The unbeaten (19-0) Eagles had claimed the District One crown. Hempfield opened with a 25-17 victory. The Eagles came back for three straight wins, taking the second set 25-15 and going on to win two very

close sets by scores of 25-21 and 25-17. In fact, in the third set, the Knights tied the Eagles 19-19 in a back-and-forth battle before seeing the Eagles outscore them down the stretch. Cara Shultz led Shanahan with 16 kills, 12 digs and four aces. Shanahan’s next opponent was its neighbor in Downingtown. The Eagles topped the D-town West Whippets 3-0 in the state quarterfinals on Saturday and are scheduled to face Pennsylvania powerhouse Parkland (District 11 champ) in the semis. Hempfield wraps up the 2018 season with an outstanding 20-2 record with a Section One crown and a Lancaster-Lebanon League championship to its credit.

moving on to the next piano. The songs ranged from Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” to “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” to a theme from one of Mozart’s sonatas. The group was led by teacher Linda Rasmuson, who provides individual lessons to children and adults and teaches adult group piano lessons from beginning to advanced levels. The group members mostly performed for their own amazement and amusement, but their enjoyed the opportunity to play for others when they had an audience. The piano class members are looking forward to performing on the Keys for the City pianos again next year. In the meantime, they plan to offer some impromptu performances on the permanent piano that Keys for the City has placed in the food court at Park City Mall.

Patrice Beittel (far left) held the music while Jack Encho (left, at piano keyboard) and Bernie Shire (right, at piano keyboard) performed a tune and Mary Kay Mowrer (back, left) and Penny Pritchett (back, right) listened. For a number of years, Music for Everyone’s Keys for the City program has placed pianos in various locations throughout downtown Lancaster during the warmer months. This summer, there were 12 brightly colored pianos decorated by local artists stationed throughout the city. Each piano, sponsored by local businesses or nonprofits, was placed in the city in mid-May and removed in the fall. A local piano class of eight adult musicians, many of whom are retired, visited the pianos on two occassions over the summer to test out their performance skills. With about two years of lessons under their belts, the group members played a few tunes solo or in tandem at one of the pianos before

Main St., Mount Joy, believe that they are called to invite, connect, equip, and send followers of Jesus to meet needs, touch lives, and change the world. One way that the St. Mark’s family aims to meet needs and touch lives right in the local community is through the church’s food ministry, including a free Thanksgiving Day dinner held annually. According to organizer Janet Lehman, St. Mark’s began serving a free Thanksgiving Day dinner in 2005, when approximately 70 people enjoyed the meal at the church. In 2017, St. Mark’s served more than 400 Thanksgiving Day dinners. Some of the meals were delivered to people’s homes, while many were enjoyed at the church with family, friends, and community members. The 14th annual free Thanksgiving Day dinner at St. Mark’s will be served on Thursday, Nov. 22, beginning at noon in the fellowship hall. Turkey with gravy, stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, green beans, cranberry sauce, rolls and butter, dessert, and beverages are on the menu. Guests should plan to arrive between 11:45 a.m. and noon, as the meal will be served family-style at noon. Parking is available at the rear of the church. Takeout options are also available. Those who pick up a dinner to take home should arrive at the church between 11 and 11:20 a.m. only. Arrangements can also be made in advance to have meals delivered to individuals who are sick or unable to leave their homes.

To make reservations for eat-in, takeout, or delivery, individuals are asked to call the church at 717-653-5493 by Monday, Nov. 19. Lehman noted that although reservations are strongly encouraged so that the team can better plan for the dinner, walk-ins will be warmly received. Last year, approximately 100 people from St. Mark’s UMC and surrounding communities helped to prepare, cook, and serve the Thanksgiving Day dinner. Many volunteers are again needed on Wednesday, Nov. 21, to help peel potatoes, make the stuffing, set up tables and chairs, and complete other tasks beginning at 6 p.m. Volunteers are sought on Thanksgiving Day to cook and serve the meal, wash dishes, and clean up afterward, as well as deliver meals to homes. Individuals are also needed to donate cakes and pies for the dinner. To donate a dessert or help with meal preparations, deliveries, or cleanup, interested individuals may call Lehman at 717-653-4189 by Saturday, Nov. 17. Lehman noted that St. Mark’s goal is that no one in the Mount Joy area will be alone or not enjoy a delicious meal on Thanksgiving Day. St. Mark’s food ministry’s mission statement is “Connecting people with Jesus and one another as their spiritual, nutritional, and emotional needs are met.” St. Mark’s strives to fulfill this mission statement by serving not only the free Thanksgiving Day dinner, but also free meals on the third Sunday of most months from 4 to 5 p.m.

Fulton Expansion Plans Continue The Fulton Theatre has announced plans for the organization’s upcoming expansion, reported on the projected economic impact of the project after completion, and has given a detailed funding report for the campaign, also known as the Fulton Theatre’s Breakout Performance. The first stage of construction, including updated stage rigging and upgrades to both stage lighting and sound, was recently completed in advance of the Fulton’s premiere of “Treasure Island.” Phase one is continuing this fall with a focus on the West King Street portion of the city block. King Street construction includes plans to rebuild the historic storefronts on the 100 block of West King Street. The top three floors will provide onsite housing for visiting artists to the Fulton stage with newly renovated apartment spaces, while the first floor will support new retail opportunities. On-site actor housing will be expanded to 26 artist apartments, which include one-bedroom apartments, spacious star apartments, and comfortable studio apartments. The Fulton’s guest artists often stay at the theater for six to 12 weeks to prepare and perform in productions. Beginning late 2019, the expansion will focus on the north side of the city block with the several construction plans. Plans include a sky-lit atrium lobby that will bridge the theater’s existing lobby and the Fulton’s education building on Grant Street. The expanded space will allow up to 1,400 patrons to gather. New restrooms

planned for the atrium lobby will provide 13 additional facilities. The atrium lobby bar will be a centerpiece for gathering before, during, and after performances. An intimate, private gathering area on the second floor will feature a refreshment area, a restroom, and a coat room to host the Fulton Theatre’s Producer’s Circle members as well as private parties for the community. A performance and rehearsal studio will allow the Fulton to rehearse full productions on-site. The space will feature sprung dance floors and mirrors and will be two stories in height to accommodate all choreographic needs. The rehearsal and performance studio will be able to be transformed into an event space for both Fulton patrons and the community. The space will hold up to 200 people. The exterior of the new rehearsal space also creates an architectural element to Water Street and continues the beautification of Water Street through to the Ware Center. The Fulton Theatre will continue to operate on its normal schedule throughout construction, and productions will not be interrupted. The project in total will have a $29 million budget, which includes a $5 million endowment. As of Aug. 31, the Fulton has raised $21 million. Donations to the campaign can be made at the Fulton Theatre’s Box Office, 12 N. Prince St., Lancaster; by visiting www.fultonbreakout.org; or by contacting a member of the Breakout Performance team at 717-394-7133.

Tips For Sharing The Road Safely

Members of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Mount Joy, including (from left) Patti Shearer, Dennis Lehman, Laura Ligo, and Rob Stoner, welcome those who have no plans for Thanksgiving to enjoy a free dinner at the church on Nov. 22. Takeout and delivery options are also available.

Servant Stage Plans Shows, Camps Servant Stage Company recently announced its 2019 season. Featured shows will include “A Million Dreams,” “Jump, Jive, and Jukebox,” “My Fair Lady,” “Let Freedom Ring,” “The Music Man,” and “Joy to the World.” Servant Stage will also offer summer youth theater camps in June through July. The camps are open to students ages 10 to 18. For more information, to purchase tickets for performances,

and to register for summer camps, readers may visit www.servantstagecompany.com. Servant Stage’s 2018 season will close with a rendition of “A Christmas Carol,” which will be presented in various locations throughout the area from Saturday, Nov. 17, through Sunday, Dec. 23. Performances will be offered at the Ware Center, 42. N. Prince St., Lancaster, on select dates.

The country’s roadways are for all to enjoy. Tens of millions of cars take to the roads every day, but they are not the only mode of transportation allowed on the road. Cyclists and pedestrians also make use of streets when sidewalks or biking paths are unavailable. Although biking and walking are inherently safe activities for millions of people per year, motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians can all take steps to make roads safer for everyone. Everyone should follow the rules of the road. Whether riding a bike or driving a motor vehicle, the rules of the road are the same. That means heeding traffic signals, signage, right-of-way, speed limits, and more. When using the roads, people should avoid alcohol use. Alcohol impairs motor skills, which are necessary to walk and operate cars and bicycles safely. Many accidents and fatalities on the roads can be traced to alcohol consumption. Individuals should not drink and drive or drink and ride. Pedestrians who need to walk heavily trafficked areas would be

smart to limit their alcohol consumption as well. Pedestrians and cyclists can make themselves more visible to motorists in various ways. Wearing bright-colored, reflective gear when walking or riding and installing reflective lights on bicycles are ways to be more visible. Drivers should remain alert at all times when behind the wheel. Motorists should be focused on the road at all times, avoiding distractions such as smartphones and in-vehicle entertainment systems. Such devices can dramatically reduce motorists’ reaction times, greatly increasing the risk of accident. Drivers should slow down when cyclists, runners, and other pedestrians are nearby. Drivers should pass safely and give room. They should not pass too closely when driving near cyclists and pedestrians. Drivers should always yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. Whether driving, riding a bicycle, or walking, everyone should work together to share roads safely. For more information, readers may visit www.nhtsa.gov.

Lancaster Health Center received $15,000 for the Lancaster County Reach Out and Read initiative, which seeks to improve early literacy skills and make early literacy an integral part of pediatric checkups in early childhood. The initiative aims to promote language development in the first five years of life, as well as parent-child shared reading. Lancaster Public Library was awarded $12,800 to connect children and their families to the library and to offer valuable information from community professionals through the Play, Learn, and Grow Series. Early literacy, nutrition, and child development are a few of the important topics covered during the two five-week sessions. These five programs are reaching families and their children who have specific mental health needs and for whom access to mental health care may be particularly challenging. The grants totaled $74,375.
