check-up and another PET scan, she learned that the cancer had returned. W hen subsequent laser surgery was unsuccessful, she had a laryngectomy (removal of the voice box). By December 2016, she was back at work. In September this year, the cancer returned, and the plan was to remove the tumor and follow up with radiation and chemotherapy. However, in the time since her previous surgery, Kroek’s husband had become ill and retired from work. This resulted in a change in Kroeck’s insurance policy; complications due to this change delayed the surgery, and the surgery window passed. Kroeck is now planning to pursue radiation and chemotherapy for her treatment. A fundraiser, “Coffee for Karen,” is taking place at Country Table Restaurant, 740 E. Main St., Mount Joy. Through Christmas Eve, Monday, Dec. 24, donations are being accepted at the eatery to benefit Karen Kroeck. Kroeck has been employed at Country Table for 19 years. Just over four years ago, she was diagnosed with the early stages of vocal cord cancer. Following this diagnosis, the plan was for her to undergo radiation five days a week for six weeks. She went for her radiation appointment every afternoon after her shift at work. She continued to work six days a week at two locations, sometimes working 12 to 14 hours a day. At the beginning of 2015, a PET scan showed that her cancer was gone. In the summer of 2016, Kroeck noticed that her voice was becoming weary. After a

The grant was funded at a cost of $910, and Redcay has since implemented the stylus writing in her classroom. Redcay and her students use the stylus pens on a daily basis to write, solve math equations, and perform other tasks that might traditionally involve pen and paper. As with all of the grants approved by the Hempfield Foundation, this is a creative initiative that has not been funded before in the school district. The grant money will allow Redcay and her students to test the instruments throughout this school year, determining if the pens are a good solution for the elementary classroom and if the stylus instruments could be used more widely across the district.

Students in Dr. Jessica Redcay’s class at Landisville Primary Center are using stylus pens with their electronic tablets in an effort to go paperless. The pens were funded by a grant from the Hempfield Foundation. HEMPFIELD EDITION

Last year, students in Dr. Jessica Redcay’s class at Landisville Primary Center identified a solution that they wanted to implement at their school in order to help the environment - go paperless. Given that the students have one-to-one electronic tablets, Redcay thought that going paperless could be a possibility if she could identify a writing instrument that would allow students to more accurately “write” on their tablets with something other than a finger. She researched various options and settled on the Zspeed Fine Point Stylus, then submitted a grant application to the Hempfield Foundation to fund her request for 25 precision stylus instruments.

Natural Christmas tree aficionados love the authenticity such trees provide during the holiday season. Natural trees also provide a unique aroma that can make holiday celebrations feel more homey. A few simple strategies can help holiday revelers ensure their Christmas trees make it through the holiday season unscathed. When purchasing natural trees, holiday celebrants, especially those who like to buy their trees in early December, may be concerned about keeping their trees fresh throughout the holiday season. Several tips can help trees last until the final present is unwrapped and the last of the egg nog has been consumed. The first tip is to buy a freshly cut tree. Whenever possible, people should cut their own

trees. This ensures that the tree they bring home is fresh, increasing the chances it will remain so throughout the season. If it is not possible to cut one’s own tree, the National Fire Protection Association notes that fresh trees should have green needles that do not come off when touched. Trees that appear to be dried out or those that shed needles when touched should be avoided. The Tree Care Industry Association advises consumers to protect their Christmas trees as they transport them home. The tree should be wrapped in a plastic wrap so it makes it home damage-free. A damaged tree might not make it through the holiday season. Pre-cut trees should be cut

To prevent the base of the tree from drying out, the tree should be placed in water the moment it gets home. Freshly cut trees may initially need the water in their tree stands filled in the morning and then again in the evening. As the season progresses trees likely will not need their stands filled more than once per day. The tree should be placed away from heat sources. Placing trees away from heat sources, such as radiators, fireplaces, heating vents, and lights, reduces the likelihood that trees will dry out and also reduces the risk of fire.

again before leaving the lot. Precut trees can make it through the holiday season looking their best, but buyers should request that employees cut as much as two inches off the bottom of the tree before leaving the lot. Once trees are cut, sap begins to seal their base, making it hard for them to absorb water. By requesting that between one and two inches be removed from the bottom of the tree at the time of purchase, buyers are ensuring their trees will be able to absorb the water they will need to make it through the season when they get home.

Haunted Lantern Tour To Return With “Mortality Within in By Chelsea Peifer

Sara Mimnall and Rebecca Wright chose the theme of “Mortality Within for Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour this year because they wanted to introduce people to a not-often-talked-about aspect of the rivertown’s history. The theme will focus on the disease and poverty that struck Columbia and other communities in earlier days, discussing the presence of pesthouses and sanitariums and how much things have changed. “It shows how people suffered more than they had to because they didn’t have the

like we do now, noted Mimnall. “It will also touch on the Great Depression and how the lack of food (and resources) can change people, Wright added. Popular characters from past years will also reappear, Wright said, such as William Campbell, a local trapper who died from rabies and is buried in Columbia’s historic Mount Bethel Cemetery. History abounds in the cemetery and the town, and according to Mimnall and Wright, while spooky elements are intertwined on the tour, history is indeed the emphasis. The hourlong guided tours will take place on Friday and Saturday

John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 23 S. Sixth St., Columbia. Tours will step off every half hour beginning at 6:30 p.m., with the last tour starting at 9:30 p.m. Participants will follow guides to Locust Street and through a loop in the Mount Bethel Cemetery before returning to the church. To purchase tickets, interested individuals may call 717-517-2442. A specific tour time will be designated when tickets are reserved. Organizers strongly encourage people to order tickets in advance. Cross Roads Church Plans Community Christmas Meal The members of Cross Roads Brethren in Christ (BIC) Church, 800 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy, invite area residents to join them for the 21st annual Community Christmas Day Meal. People are welcome to stop in at the church from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to enjoy a hot turkey dinner. All are welcome, and there is no cost to attend. Takeout options are also available. Attendees who would like to pay it forward are welcome to bring a nonperishable food item to donate to the Mount Joy Food Bank. Reservations are requested, but not required. Interested individuals may sign up by calling 717653-1616 or visiting www.crossroadsbic.com/ christmas-meal-sign-up preferably by Sunday, Dec. 23. Walk-ins are welcome. “We don’t ever want to turn people away, because we always end up having

plenty of food,” said coordinator Joe McFarland. Meals can also be delivered upon request to area residents who are unable to leave their homes. McFarland had the idea for the annual Community Christmas Day Meal at Cross Roads at a time when free Thanksgiving meals were plentiful in the area, but Christmas Day meals were not. “I honestly felt like it was what God wanted us to do,” shared McFarland. The inaugural event was held on Christmas Eve, in case there were not enough volunteers available to serve on Christmas Day, but as it turned out there were plenty of helpers. Every year after that, the meal has been held on Christmas Day, and McFarland said helping to serve the meal has become such a popular tradition that sometimes they actually have to turn away volunteers. Church members who are not helping with setup and teardown and serving the meal are eager to make or donate food. Originally, organizers thought the meal would primarily reach people who may be struggling financially and unable to afford food, but McFarland said that more than anything the meal has served as a way for people who would otherwise be alone to enjoy fellowship and the company of one another. “People usually get here at the beginning and stay the whole time,” said McFarland. Last year, approximately 420 people enjoyed a meal from Cross Roads. “A lot of times their families live far away, and they have no place to go,” added Clare Funck, who has helped to plan and serve the annual meal for many years. “We sit at their tables and catch up, and sometimes we pray with them or ask if they have any prayer requests.” Cross Roads members also deliver meals to folks working at places like the police station, the fire department, and local convenience stores on Christmas Day all with the goal of making sure no one feels lonely or forgotten. “If you’re alone for Christmas, come here and be welcomed into the family here,” encouraged Funck. “It’s such a joy to see people being fed and enjoying themselves. It feels like you’re at home.”

NALC Chapter Delivers Donations

Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) recognized East Petersburg Elementary School (EPES) as a Title I Distinguished School for High Progress. EPES earned this designation for being among the highest 5 percent of Title I schools in Pennsylvania. The state selected 158 Title I schools to be named Distinguished Schools. The award is based on 2016-17 Pennsylvania Value-Added Assessment System (PVAAS) data on the following criteria of annual measurable objectives: math and reading PSSA participation of all students, attendance rate of all students, closing the achievement gap in math and reading PSSA scores of all students, and closing the achievement gap in math and reading PSSA scores of historically underperforming students. EPES will be eligible to be selected as one of Pennsylvania’s National Title I Distinguished Schools at the National Title I Conference in Kansas City, Mo., in February 2019. This honor will be determined by the state prior to the event.
