Lampeter-Strasburg High School students to put on “Mamma Mia!”
BY GEORGE DEIBEL
The cast and crew of Lampeter-Strasburg High School’s production of “Mamma Mia!” is confident those who take a chance on seeing the show will be saying, “Thank you for the music.”
“It’s a fun, energetic show,” said Mia LaFontaine, who will portray Donna. “It’s a humorous show. There is a lot of comedy throughout with strong characters and a good love story at the end.”
“Mamma Mia!” will be performed in Lampeter-Strasburg High School’s Performing Arts Center, 1640 Book Road, Lancaster.
The show dates and times will be Thursday, Feb. 27, at 7 p.m.; Friday, Feb. 28, at 7 p.m.; and Saturday, March 1, at 2 p.m.
Tickets can be purchased online at www.zeffy.com/ticketing/mam ma-mia-2025-spring-musical or at the door using cash or a card. Doors will open at 6 p.m. on Feb. 27 and 28 and at 1 p.m. on March 1.
Director Kevin Ditzler noted that “Mamma Mia!” is an ideal choice for this spring. “We assess the talent we feel we have and know we have the components needed to put on a strong musical,” said Ditzler. “As we were looking down the line, we knew we had a lot of really strong female talent, and we have a lot of quirky male comedians. This show lends itself perfectly to being able to highlight the strong female talent and utilize the comic ability of the cast. We hadn’t done anything vocally quite as contemporary with pop music in a while, so we thought this was a good opportunity. We

try, over a four-year period, to give students different types of musicals. They hadn’t touched upon something like this before, so we figured it was a good opportunity. And darn it, it’s just fun.”
In addition to Mia as Donna, the main cast is Amara Russell as Sophie, Audrey Weiand as Ali, Sigey Bett as Lisa, Luda Lozada as Nancy, Ciara Mecouch as Tanya, Ellie Rhinier as Rosie, Julian Ford as Sky, Micah Drouillard as Pepper, Xavier Thomas as Eddie, Gabe Bostdorf as Harry Bright, James Appelgrijn as Bill Austin, Trenton Breneman as Sam Carmichael, and Isaac Staley as Father Alexander.
“Mamma Mia!” takes place on the fictional Greek island of Kalokairi and is based on songs by the Swedish band ABBA.

than we did when we were picking songs from our childhood,” said Ditzler. “They know them as well from the success of the Broadway musical (‘Mamma Mia!’).”
“I think it’s a really fun show, and people will know a lot of the songs we do.”
Although ABBA hit the music scene in the 1970s, Ditzler said many of his students are familiar with the songs.
“(The students) probably showed even greater enthusiasm

Trenton enjoyed learning some of ABBA’s lesser-known works. “I know the popular songs,” Trenton said. “I didn’t know all the less-popular songs, but they actually ended up being some of our favorites. They mean a lot more to the show. I think it’s a really
fun show, and people will know a lot of the songs we do.”
Mia stated that her character plays a central role in the story.
“Donna is a strong single mom who has raised her daughter for 20 years,” she said. “She’s just struggling to keep her business open. She meets her three past (boyfriends) and feels conflicted. She doesn’t know how to deal with that and is still in love with one of them.”
Mia believes the production will be especially meaningful to people who lived through the 1970s - when ABBA was formed - and also will appeal to everyone.

BY GEORGE DEIBEL
The seeds for the annual Lancaster County Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) event were planted in 2013 when pediatrician Dr. Lora Mangus Wenger and her family visited Haiti with members of Willow Street Mennonite Church as part of a Mission of Hope mission trip.
“At that time, (Mission of Hope) was feeding 50,000 children a day by distributing meals to their school, other schools, and orphanages,” Mangus Wenger said. “A warehouse (of food provided by FMSC) was stacked from floor to ceiling with boxes.”
Mangus Wenger had never heard of FMSC before that and decided to do some research after returning home. She discovered there were no MobilePack events taking place in Pennsylvania, so she and her husband, Todd, and daughters, Anna and Naomi, participated in a MobilePack in New Jersey.
“I thought, ‘We can probably do this ourselves,’” she recalled. Willow Street Mennonite Church got involved and hosted the first Lancaster County MobilePack in 2014. That event attracted 50 volunteers and put together 100,000 meals.
This year will mark a milestone. Because two years were canceled because of COVID, the 10th Lancaster County FMSC MobilePack will take place Friday to Sunday, March 28 to 30, at Willow Street Mennonite Church, 399 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street.
To date, meals have gone to Somalia, Haiti, Belize, the

Student choir to perform at church

The J.P. McCaskey Voices of Freedom choir will perform in the sanctuary at First Reformed Church United Church of Christ, 40 E. Orange St., Lancaster, on Sunday, Feb. 23, at 4 p.m. The concert will celebrate Black History Month.
The choir began more than
35 years ago and has performed with Chris Tomlin, Kirk Franklin, Anthony Evans, and Damien Sneed. Director Colette Stephens and assistant music director Keith Lewis aim to maintain the rich history of gospel music through uplifting performances that provide a lasting and positive experience for the students and those who hear their concerts.
The concert is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be available afterward. For more information, contact the church office at 717-397-5149.

The Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA), 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg, will present two new shows, with an opening reception on Sunday, Feb. 23, at 2 p.m.

In the Main Gallery, “Cool Colors” will feature works by LCAA members using the colors green, blue, and violet.
In the Steinmetz Gallery, LCAA member Evanna Morris will be the featured artist. She likes to experiment with new techniques and subject matter. Many of her paintings reflect her surroundings either in Lancaster County or in her travels to Iceland, Costa Rica, or the Virgin Islands.
The shows will be open from Thursdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, call 717-687-7061 or visit www .lcaaonline.org.

Dominican Republic, Malawi, Uganda, Jamaica, Poland, Guyana, and Moldova. Over the prior nine events, more than 10,000 volunteers from the community have come together to send more than 2.3 million meals to those most in need around the world, Mangus Wenger said.
This year, the plan is to have 2,000 volunteers work two-hour shifts to pack 400,000 meals in three days. There are no age limitations. For safety and efficiency, studentto-adult ratios are put in place, Mangus Wenger said. Sit-down jobs are available if needed.
Individuals who sign up for a packing shift are encouraged but not required to make a personal goal of contributing
a minimum of $63. At the price of 29 cents a meal, this donation covers the cost of one box of packed meals (216 meals), which is the average amount a single volunteer packs in a two-hour period.
“This food is literally going to those most in need around the world. Some of the people receiving this food only have one good meal a day,” said Mangus Wenger, who is the Lancaster County FMSC MobilePack chairperson.
Donations may be submitted at www.fmsc.org. Registration is underway and can be completed on the website.
Packing times are March 28 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m.; Saturday, March 29, from 9 to 11 a.m., noon to 2 p.m., 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., and 5 to 7 p.m.; and March 30 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Some shift times are more popular than others and fill quickly.
FMSC is also committed to helping people closer to home by collecting food for the Lancaster County Food Hub. Volunteers are invited to bring a nonperishable food item that will be donated to the food hub in Lancaster city. Anyone from Lancaster County may receive food from this location.
Items requested include 1-lb. containers of peanut butter; canned meats such as chicken or tuna; 1-lb. bags of white or brown rice; canned fruit in juice or light syrup; pasta, pref-

erably whole wheat; meal helpers; low-sugar breakfast cereal; and low-sodium soup.
Anyone who has never participated in an FMSC event will need to visit www.fmsc.org, set up a username and password to register as an individual or for a group, go to the upper right-hand corner, and click “Log in.” People can then create an account to set up a username and password.
After setting up an account, participants may type “FMSC.org login” into a browser and click on “Volunteer.” People may then reserve the number of spots they will need for their group. Groups

may help during multiple shifts, but they should not reserve more spaces than they know they will fill.
“I’m very thankful that so many people are willing to get involved,” Mangus Wenger said. “It particularly makes me happy to see children involved, because I think it’s very important we help them understand the importance of having adequate food on a regular basis, and how in the United States, we’re very, very blessed. Unfortunately, a lot of children in the world don’t have adequate nutrition. We are able to help them. I am happy to see our community be so supportive.”
To celebrate the 10th event in Lancaster County, Daryl Fulp of Hope for Home Ministries in Guatemala will talk briefly before each packing session about the impact of the volunteers’ work.

“Mamma Mia!”
“A lot of the choreography is from the (1970s), so I think it will be nostalgic for people,” Mia said. “I think it’s just a heartwarming story a lot of people can relate to in different ways. The cast has put so much into it. We just want to show what we can do.”
Amara, a veteran of the stage in part because her parents, John and Darcy, work at Sight & Sound Theatre, will play Donna’s daughter, who was born and raised on the island.
“She’s a very headstrong, fun-loving young girl,” Amara said. “She’s about to get married to her fiancé, Sky, and she’s trying to figure out who her dad is.”
from pg 1
Ditzler stated “Mamma Mia!” challenges his students. “It’s vocally demanding,” he said. “There are a lot of opportunities for not only the backup crew, but a lot of belting, so it’s a musically challenging show for a lot of the students. Typically, in a show like this, one of the challenges is it never stops. There’s no traditional blackout and time to change the set. Technically, it creates a bit of a difficult show as well. It just means it’s a great opportunity to reconceive the way you look at a show and approach it differently. It’s been a lot of fun in that way.”
Fire company posts fastnacht sale
Lafayette Fire Company, 63 Lafayette Way, Lancaster, will host its sixth annual Fasnachts for Fassnacht event. Fastnachts will be available for pickup Monday, March 3, from 5 to 7 p.m. and Tuesday, March 4, from 5:30 to 9 a.m.
There is a fee per half-

dozen. Each half-dozen will consist of three powdered sugar fastnachts and three glazed fastnachts.
To order by Thursday, Feb. 27, visit https:// lfc63.square.site/product/ fasnachts/12. Proceeds will benefit the Lafayette Fire Company’s cancer prevention initiatives.

Library announces underwear collection
Strasburg-Heisler Library, 143 Precision Ave., Strasburg, is partnering with L-S Together in collecting new underwear for school-age kids throughout February and March. Some of the underwear will be distributed to local organizations in the Lampeter-Strasburg community that serve children and families, and some will be given to schools to have on hand in case students need them.
Children may need clean underwear at school for a variety of reasons, including accidents,

illness, or the inability to wash clothes regularly. The availability of this piece of clothing may provide relief from embarrassment and keep students in the classroom so they can focus on learning.
The Drop Your Drawers campaign began in Campbell County Public Library in Kentucky when a librarian learned from a school nurse the number of pairs of underwear that were being given to students. The school’s supply typically ran out midyear, prompting school nurses to purchase underwear
themselves for their students.
This is the sixth year for the Drop Your Drawers campaign at Strasburg-Heisler Library. A variety of sizes are needed for children through grade 12. New, packaged underwear can be dropped off at the library during regular hours.
Donors may also visit www.strasburglibrary .org and click on the Drop Your Drawers icon to be redirected to an Amazon list of preselected items that can be shipped directly to the library.

Well Spouse explores the nature of caregiving
BY JEFF FALK
Providing care for incapacitated wives and husbands is a huge commitment and an even bigger undertaking. The act can be physically, mentally and emotionally taxing.
But who cares for the caregiver? Oftentimes, that responsibility falls to the caregivers themselves.
Well Spouse Association is a support group that recognizes that caregiving husbands and wives are more effective when they are healthy.
“This is our therapy,” said Barry Applebaum, the founder of the Lancaster chapter of Well Spouse Association. “This is our respite. This is a way to talk to people who know what we’re going through. Sometimes it’s for the friendships that we make.”
“When you become a spousal caregiver, it’s uniquely different,” continued Applebaum. “It has unique challenges. That person was someone you communicated with. ... But it’s not the same person. You learn to love and care in a different way.”
The Lancaster branch of Well Spouse Association meets at 7 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesdays of every month. The support group for spouses who are taking
care of significant others meets via Zoom on the second Wednesday and at Wegmans, 2000 Crossings Blvd., Lancaster, on the fourth Wednesday.
There is a yearly membership fee associated with joining the group.
“Every person’s situation is different,” said Applebaum, a 66-year-old resident of East Lampeter Township. “Our spouses are sick and can’t get out, so the Zoom meeting is convenient. Some people don’t want their spouses to know they’re doing this. It can be threatening. For most of us, the reality is our spouses are (present in this world), but they’re very different. We have to transport them, and some can’t talk well.”
Since its inception about nine years ago, the Lancaster branch of Well Spouse Association has had a membership fluctuating between three and eight spousal caregivers. The members are caring for spouses who have had strokes, cancer, traumatic brain injuries, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and muscular dystrophy.
“The numbers of people who are spousal caregivers is staggering,” said Applebaum. “We’re this well-kept secret. Some

contend that the average senior citizen is a spousal caregiver.”
“You reach a point that we call anticipatory grief where we grieve a loved one who is still here,” he added. “For many of us, when a spouse does pass, we grieve extensively. But others come to terms with it quickly because they’ve already grieved. People reach a point where they can’t (give care) anymore.”
In 2011, Applebaum’s wife, Susanne, an otherwise healthy 50-year-old dental hygienist, experienced a massive stroke. After attending Well Spouse Association meetings near King of Prussia; Cherry Hill, N.J.; and Baltimore, Applebaum decided to start a chapter closer to home.
“Our lives have never been the same since (the stroke),” said Applebaum. “We were going to travel and live our lives. But it was all taken away from us. When you have no choice, you do what you have to
do. I went for counseling, but at the end of the day, being around people who get it was more therapeutic. We are dealing with our (spouse’s) own specific disabilities, but we understand and support each other. We understand what we go through day to day.”
Headquartered in Freehold, N.J., Well Spouse Association was founded in 1988, and the organization assists more than 25 support groups.
“There was a point with my wife where I was doing everything and I burned out, and I ended up with my own health issues,” said Applebaum. “I want to maintain a sense of who I am. (Well Spouse) keeps me in a world where I talk to people, and it keeps me relevant. We all go through these cycles. We have good weeks, and we have bad weeks. When I’m feeling down, I realize some people have it worse.”
