Wesley UMC potpie dinner will fund hurricane relief efforts

People who attend the potpie dinner at Wesley United Methodist Church (UMC) will be helping two of their own help others.

The event will be held Saturday, March 8, from 3 to 7 p.m. or until sold out at the church, 40 W. Main St., Strasburg. It is a joint venture with West Willow United Methodist Church, as Robert Garvey is a pastor at both Wesley and West Willow.

The eat-in or takeout dinner includes potpie, coleslaw, peas, a roll, and a drink. Potpie will also be sold by the quart. Baked goods will be sold.

All proceeds will benefit Hurricane Helene reconstruction projects in North Carolina.

“We thought this would be a fun way to support Lynn and Tim Young, who are still working down in North Carolina,” said Kay Graybill, Wesley UMC’s mission coordinator. “Each month we pick a mission or project to support.”

Tim’s parents, Paul and Rose Young, were active in Wesley UMC before moving to North Carolina to be closer to Tim, Lynn, and their 11 children. Lynn and Tim have been working to assist people who are recovering from the effects of the hurricane, which occurred in late September. “As they receive funds, they take the money and go buy the material they need and help people,” said church member Pete Kingsley, whose wife, Janet, is Lynn’s aunt.

Chase Smucker is an excellent all-around basketball player, but it’s his career points total that has garnered most of the attention.

The 6-foot senior guard became Lampeter-Strasburg boys’ basketball’s all-time leading scorer during a win at Octorara Feb. 4.

Chase surpassed Bryan Boyd’s total of 1,326 points on a transition basket, using a crossover dribble at halfcourt and driving for a left-handed layup.

Chase, who needed 10 points entering the game and finished with 16, wasn’t keeping track of his total during the important league game, but his family was.

Chase’s parents, Marlin and Janet, were in attendance along with two brothers, Jordan and Mitch, who both came in from Ohio. Chase’s brother Austin, an assistant coach for the Pioneers,

was on the bench.

“My whole family knew it happened,” Chase said. “But it was a big game, and I was kind of in the moment. I didn’t even know it happened. I was just focused on the moment and wasn’t keeping track of my point total. It’s cool. It’s really cool. It was cool seeing all my family’s support and seeing how excited they got.”

The Lancaster County WoodCarvers group will hold its 50th annual Woodcarving Festival on Saturday, March 15, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, March 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Millersville University’s Student Memorial Center, 108 Shenks Lane, Millersville. Parking is free. Admission is

ID and for students with high school or post-high school student ID.

“It’s going to be the largest show we’ve had,” said Jeffrey Pretz, who is a member of the Lancaster County WoodCarvers. “We’re having commemorative carving knives created that will be for sale. We’re having the Caricature Carvers of America. There will be a lot of bird carvers

Lynn and Tim live in North Carolina and make a six-hour round-trip to the most affected areas in the western part of the state. “We just feel as neighbors that is our calling,” Lynn said. “We are supposed to take care of whoever it is that’s in need. The need there is greater than we have seen before.”

She is thankful that Wesley UMC will be holding the potpie dinner to support their mission. “We were pleasantly surprised,” Lynn said. “We are excited to be able to do a little bit more. It’s been a gift for certain. It allows us to take on slightly larger projects.”

Lynn and Tim will first complete projects they weren’t able to finish on their last trip, including building a new porch on a tiny home for a Vietnam veteran who is confined to a wheelchair, purchasing a stove and insulated windows for that home, and working on other projects on that street.

Lynn and Tim are not doing the work on their own. Many of their children are also assisting and bring friends along. Sean is an HVAC expert, and Adam and Samuel are electricians. JohnPaul, Ehren, Michaela, and Gabriella also pitch in.

Tim said one of the greatest gifts he ever received from his parents was to understand servitude and always be there for those in need. “This gift is a way of life shared by me and our children,” Lynn said. “To pray with and for people while providing what they need in materials, labor, and hope is a gift and privilege we can all participate in.”

The Youngs repair roofs, build shelters, provide fuel, clear debris, repair driveways, and prepare and serve meals for residents and other volunteers.

They are seeking the donation of a camper or money to be able to purchase a discounted one so they can stay on-site instead of having to make the six-hour round-trip.

“We plan to continue to return to the area to utilize our Godgiven abilities to help all we can,” said Lynn.

Lynn said there are still people living in cars and tents while

some remain in homes with leaky roofs. Many businesses that provide jobs are closed, some of them permanently.

Anyone who would like to make a donation to the relief efforts can email office@wesley strasburg.org or call 717-6876392 to learn where to send a check, which should include the note “hurricane relief.” Checks should be received by Saturday, March 15.

“We have the time, ability, and desire to serve our brothers and sisters in Christ,” Lynn said. “Those who can serve financially,

we ask that you partner with us to help provide for those who have suffered such loss. Most importantly, we ask for continued prayers for all those affected and all of us serving.”

kinds of carvings, as well.”

The featured guest carver will be Joe You, past president of Caricature Carvers of America. A retired dentist from California, You is regarded as a creative and accomplished caricature carver.

“People can come to purchase supplies for carving as well as carvings that are handmade by individuals who are there,” Pretz said. “They can also come for inspiration of a great hobby.”

Among the 60 exhibitors will be members of the Lancaster County WoodCarvers’ sister clubs, including the American National Cane Club (ANCC), a club that focuses on canes and walking sticks and meets monthly in Lancaster County; the Manheim Township WoodCarvers, a club that focuses on carving together and crafting Christmas ornaments for hospice and meets monthly in Lancaster County; the Conewago Carvers, a club that meets in East Berlin; the West Shore Woodcarvers,

a club that is active in Mechanicsburg; the Yorkarvers, a club from York; the PA Delaware Valley Woodcarvers, a club from Bucks County; and the William Rush Woodcarvers, a club in Media. The Pennsylvania Gourd Society will present a display of its art with gourds. There will be a free hands-on carving station for new carvers or those who just want to try carving. All supplies and tools will be available for use with basic safety and techniques shared. Instruction and guidance will be provided by club members. Each session will take about an hour and will start on the hour and on the half hour. At the end of the hour, most will leave with their carved project. Participants must be at least 18 years old, and everyone must sign a waiver to participate in a session.

Original woodcarvings will be available for purchase from many of the artists and carvers. Vendors will also sell carving and art tools,

Chase is the eighth L-S boys player to reach the 1,000-point milestone, joining Boyd; Zac Shaeffer, 1,239 points; Randy Good, 1,220; Denny Diehm, 1,142; Ryan Smith, 1,080; Joel Eshleman, 1,009; and Seth Beers, 1,002.

In the district tournament, Chase poured in 50 points in a first-round win over Northern York and added 31 in a second-round loss to West York to bring his total to 1,440. The opening-round win assured the Pioneers a place in the PIAA Tournament, which will start Friday, March 7.

Chase is a threat to score from beyond the arc, at the charity stripe, or on a drive to the rim as his record-setting basket demonstrated. He knocked down 60 three-pointers during the regular season and made more than 100 free throws.

“I’m definitely a three-level scorer,” Chase said. “I can get to the basket whenever I need to. I can hit pull-up jumpers, handle the ball. I think I can do a little bit of everything on offense. Sometimes I think my defense goes unnoticed. I like to take pride in being a smart player. I watch a lot of basketball. I’ve played for a long time. I have family that’s played basketball, so I think that’s a big part.”

His role changes during the summer when he plays for the York Ballers AAU team. “I am more of a glue guy,” Chase said. “A Swiss Army Knife.” He has modeled his game after Dallas Mavericks star Kyrie Irving. “Kyrie Irving is my favorite player of all time,”Chase said.“I’ve always watched his highlights. I like the way he plays with his own pace and his change of speeds, especially as a smaller guard. In high school it doesn’t matter as

supplies, books, and wood. Among the vendors expected are Art From the Bark, Kathryn and Dennis Overcash from Rhoadesville, Va.; Badger State Blades, Ashten Brown from Wisconsin; Hillcrest Carving, Don Swartz from Lancaster County; Ritter Carvers Inc., Barbara Ritter from Colmar; The Carving Glove Guy, Don Butler from Michigan; and Windy Cape Studios, Joshua Walters from Annville.

Professional sharpening will be available for woodcarving knives and gouges. A silent auction will be held for a number of carvings and wildlife art donated by exhibitors and club members, as well as a variety of other items. Proceeds from the silent auction will be split between the club’s Beginner Carver Fund and one local nonprofit organization.

Door prizes of carvings done by the Lancaster County WoodCarvers will be awarded regularly throughout the festival.

The Lancaster County WoodCarvers group, made up of 75 members, meets the third Tuesday evening of each month at Community United Methodist Church, 130 Tennyson Drive, Lancaster. Carving starts at 6 p.m. with a meeting and show and tell at 7.

The group holds an “open carve” at Community United Methodist Church on the first Thursday of every month at 9 a.m.and 6 p.m.

“It’s an outlet for my creativity,” Pretz said. “But also there are a lot of books and patterns that you can copy. It’s something you can do that’s not noisy, you’re using your hands, and you can do it almost any place.”

education and basketball career at Bloomsburg University in the fall.

“That was always my dream to play in the PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference),” Chase said. “It’s one of the better (Division II) conferences in the country, and I like the physicality and speed they play with.”

He is considering a major in sports management. “I want to be involved with sports and become a coach so I can stay around basketball,” Chase said. “I think I’m a good leader, so that would play into the coaching aspect.”

His family has always been his biggest influence. “My parents kind of went with the flow with us kids,” said Chase. “They weren’t athletes growing up. They have learned a lot watching me and my siblings. My dad has always preached leadership to me and playing through the ups and downs when there is adversity. He preached being a leader to everybody and having a voice and showing your personality out on the court.”

Although 7 years old at the time, Chase has fond memories of watching Austin play for the Pioneers. “I think that’s when I fell in love with the game,” Chase said. Mitch previously worked on the coaching staffs at Dartmouth College and University of Delaware.

Chase scored 104 points in his rookie season, as the Pioneers went 28-1 and captured the district championship. “Scoring 1,000 was always my goal, and I knew that was possible,” he said. “The record was always in the back of my mind. I was always the type to try to win games, especially after how much we won during my freshman year. I always just wanted to win, but I knew if (the school record) came it would just be a bonus.”

Chase’s record-setting feat is a source of pride for the program. “Chase is someone we can point to and say, ‘If you work hard, here’s what can happen to you,’” Lampeter-Strasburg head coach Ed Berryman said. “And he’s worked extremely hard. He works on his game every day. That’s a great message to be able to share with the kids in the program, from fourth grade up.”

The coach also praised Chase’s unselfishness. “We’re proud of him,” Berryman said. “Many times, he could take shots that he doesn’t take. He’s still all about the team. That’s what is really special about him.”
