Lampeter-Strasburg

Local musicians will collaborate with the district’s best

Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S)

High School musicians

Elliott Holmes, Mia LaFontaine, Clara Mecouch, Ellie Rhinier, Leiana Smathers, and Carson Zook have earned the chance to perform in their home venue alongside students from across the district.

The Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) District 7 Modern Band Festival will be held Friday, April 4, and Saturday, April 5, in the Lampeter -Strasburg High School Performing Arts Center, 1640 Book Road, Lancaster.

Students will spend that Friday rehearsing, and the event will culminate with a public concert the following day at 3 p.m. Tickets

will be sold at the door.

The six L-S performers will join 29 of the best student musicians from the counties of Adams, Franklin, Cumberland, Lancaster, York, Dauphin, Perry, and Lebanon. There will be 16 school

districts represented.

Jennifer Jester from Millersville University will be the guest conductor.

L-S choral director Erik Welchans, who also teaches elective courses, will be the host director.

Welchans started a modern band class at L-S last year. “(Modern band is) an up-and-coming thing across the state and across the nation,” he said. “The talent and competition keep getting better. We are reaching kids that we don’t normally see in the music wing, so it’s really neat.”

Students will be divided into five bands, which each group having either six or seven members.

Ellie, a senior vocalist, and Elliott, a freshman keyboardist, are in a band that will perform “Pink Pony Club” by Chappell Roan, “Silver Springs” by Fleetwood Mac, “Limelight” by Rush, and “Sweet Child O’ Mine” by Guns N’ Roses.

Ian Lyons is an unflinching guy who isn’t easily excited.

Those are two great traits to possess when you are competing against the best shooters around.

“You have to be really calm because if you’re excited, your heartbeat goes up,” said Ian. “You get unsteady and don’t shoot as well. You have to be very calm and collected. It comes into play at every aspect. For me, I’m just a very calm person, so that helps.”

Ian, a senior at Lampeter-Strasburg High School, earned gold, silver, and bronze medals at the PA Interscholastic High School 3-P Smallbore and Precision Air Rifle Championship, held Feb. 14 to 16 at Everett Sportsmen’s Club.

In the 3-P (3-position) smallbore competition, participants take 20 shots from a prone

position, 20 while kneeling, and 20 while standing. Ian was second overall and the top male finisher. He earned a gold medal as the top scorer in the standing part of the event.

In the air rifle event, where competitors take 60 shots while standing, Ian was third overall in the state and the first

State competitions are viewed as qualifying matches for the Junior Olympics. The cutoff for air rifle is 585 out of 600, and Ian scored 589 with 40x. An x is earned by scoring 10.25 or higher on a shot.

Ian scored a 575 in the smallbore event, where a .22 long rifle is used.

The 2025 Rifle and Pistol National Junior Olympics will be held in Anniston and Talladega, Ala., from Sunday, April 13, to Friday, April 18.

“This is the Junior Olympics, and a lot of the (other) matches, I’m shooting against Olympians. I don’t have to deal with the Olympians (at this event), so I should fare decently well,” Ian said. “It’s pretty much just an NCAA match with a couple of high-schoolers who are good. It should be interesting. I won’t win, but I won’t do terribly bad. It will be fun.”

Ian has already taken part in big events, competing against Army marksmen in a tournament in West Virginia.

Lampeter-Strasburg does not have a rifle team, but Ian will have teammates in the fall. He earned a scholarship to attend Division I University of North Georgia, where he plans to major in marketing.

Ian was a late bloomer. He did not begin competitive shooting until February of his eighth-grade year. His dad, Nathan Lyons, saw an advertisement on Facebook and told his son, “This will be fun; you should try it.” “I said, ‘OK,’” Ian said. “One thing led to another, and now I am doing it.”

It was quite an adjustment. “I had been hunting, but nothing as precise as this,” Ian said. “The targets I am trying to hit now are smaller than the tip of a pen, and matches are determined by a quarter of a millimeter.”

Ian hones his craft at the Palmyra Sportsmen’s Association, where Erin Gestl is his primary coach. “I have a really good coaching staff,” Ian said. “They are some of the best in the country. They can take you from average shooter to the best in the country. Working with Gestl for the past few years, I’ve been able to win things. The program is very good for people.”

Ian is setting his sights on the ultimate goal, earning a spot on the United States Olympic Team. “I need to win NCAA and become exceptional in every realm for next four years,” he said. “Get on the Olympic Developmental team, and then the next Olympics, get on the team and win gold for America. There’s not a lot of steps. It’s hard to do them. If it’s what you really want, you’ll get it.”

Fossils

from Pennsylvania, South Carolina, North Carolina, Maryland, Wyoming, South Dakota, and Florida, along with educational displays, including a hands-on activity where kids use small shovels to scoop up dirt and gravel and search for shark teeth.

Club members will guide kids and their families “state by state” and educate visitors on the various fossils found in that specific state as well as collecting techniques.

Participants can arrive anytime between 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The kids will join the Fossil Safari in progress at the current speaker location and rotate with the speaker and group, visiting each state fossil table during the safari rotation.

It is estimated that visitors will spend between 10 and 15 minutes at each station, and the entire safari will take an average of an hour and a half, depending on interest and participation. “It’s a family adventure,” Sue said. “Families follow their kids along.”

After the families complete their safari, they are welcome to revisit any booths on their own while a new safari rotation starts again.

Food by the Trinity Church Guild will be available for purchase.

Sue, who lives in Lancaster, rediscovered her love of fossil hunting with Chuck. “It’s a childhood passion and hobby that I’ve had,” she said. “We have always been interested in it. We were looking for

something to be able to do together. We have met so many interesting people all across the United States doing this. It’s interesting when you make friendships based on the same passion you have.”

Sue noted that introducing fossils and minerals to young people is beneficial on a couple levels. “It’s important to get kids involved with science,” she said. “Then our club can continue on in the future. You always have to have new interest. It’s really interesting to see this spark passion. Some of the kids who come in might not be interested (at first), but they have siblings who are interested. Once they’re there, they’re very excited about it.”

She hopes the Fossil Safari encourages a new generation of fossil hunters. “I’m sure someone sparked our interest when I was young,” Sue said. “I was a fossil hunter when I was little. Then I took a break because of my (nursing) career. I needed something that I’m interested in again,

so I went back to something from my childhood. You never know who you are going to inspire.”

The Lancaster County Fossil and Mineral Club meets the last Thursday of each month beginning at 7 p.m. at Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ. Everyone is welcome to attend a meeting. There is a fee to become a member. Sue said the meetings feature monthly speakers with diverse educational backgrounds and visits from geologists and others knowledgeable about fossils and minerals. The group also takes field trips.

said. “Last year my band and I really bonded, and we started hanging out after the festival and playing music together. It’s a good way to meet other talented people and connect with them.”

Elliott said, “I am hoping to improve my skills as a musician while at the same time getting to know people who aren’t from my school. It’s a valuable experience to have.”

Clara, a senior vocalist, will sing “Good Luck, Babe!” by Chappell Roan, “Shoulder to the Wheel” by Saves the Day, “Isn’t She Lovely” by Stevie Wonder, and “Killer Queen” by Queen.

“‘Isn’t She Lovely’ is a really strong contrast to ‘Shoulder to the Wheel,’ and ‘Killer Queen’ is a strong contrast to ‘Good Luck, Babe!’” said Clara. “They all contrast each other, and we all have different musical styles,” Clara said.

Clara prefers hardcore funk pop and wants to be an actor in musical theater. “I spend a lot of time training in different forms because musicals are very versatile these days,” she said. “It’s a matter of knowing how to sing a bunch of different things, and I’ve been good with that since I was younger because of being in theater and doing a lot of different shows.”

Leiana, a junior vocalist, will sing “Tom Sawyer” by Rush, “Carry on Wayward Son” by Kansas, “The Chain” by Fleetwood Mac, and “Eclipse” by Pink Floyd. She stated that singing at festivals helps boost her confidence level. “I did this last year, and it helped me get out of my shell,” Leiana said. “I figured out I could sing these songs. It was a

lot of fun. I like building the experience, so later down the line I will be less nervous when it comes to more professional stuff that I want to do.”

Mia, a junior vocalist, will sing “Iris” by Goo Goo Dolls, “Hard Times” by Paramore, “99 Luftballons” by Nena, and “Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac. She said she appreciates her school’s music department.

“There are so many things I get to do at this school from our chorus concerts to doing ‘Mamma Mia!’ or a play to doing a Modern Band Festival,” Mia said. “The school lets us have so many experiences with music, and I get so many different perspectives and opportunities for other people to come into our school and see what we do here. I think it’s really great.”

Carson, a senior, will play bass on songs “The Pretender” by Foo Fighters, “Use Somebody” by Kings of Leon, and two mashups.

The modern band members are grateful for their instructors. “I think our teachers are really awesome,” Clara said. “I think Mr. Welchans is really awesome, and I think the teachers are very supportive.”

L-S offers classes in vocal repertoire, music theory, and now modern band. “Mr. Welchans pushes us to take different kinds of classes within our music department,” Mia said. “It gives you the opportunity to play different instruments and explore within your musicianship different things you can do.”

Lancaster Inferno encourages female players to take soccer to next level

It’s really all about providing opportunities for girls and young women. The Lancaster Inferno motivates females to take advantage of opportunities and to make the most of them.

For the Inferno, soccer is more than a game; it’s a transformational tool.

“Our goal is to empower these girls and women and use soccer as a platform for the development and growth,” said Stephanie Cleaves, executive director of the Lancaster Inferno and the head coach of the

club’s first team. “Eighty percent of female CEOs played sports. It’s our goal to develop not just the athletes but the individuals as future leaders and to build confidence. Having female role models is very important to that.”

Headquartered at Pod 2 in Rock Lititz, 201 Rock Lititz Blvd., the Lancaster Inferno and the Lancaster Inferno Football Club (F.C.) is a one-of-a-kind academy that promotes female soccer and its benefits. The program revolves around a series of competitive and

Concert to feature organ music

First Reformed Church, 40 E. Orange St., Lancaster, will present a concert, “Majesty of the Organ,” on First Friday, April 4, at 8 p.m. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m. The 30-minute program will feature organist Ken

Krause. The program will include “Trumpet Voluntary” by Henry Huron and “Suite for Organ” by Charles John Stanley.

The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, call the church office at 717-397-5149.

instructional age-group teams, each more advanced than its predecessor.

There are financial fees associated with each level of the Lancaster Inferno academy.

THURSDAY

“When it was initially launched, we wanted to provide a place for highlevel talent to play,” said Cleaves. “That evolved into wanting to have a feeder system for the top teams. We felt like there was a need to create a club that was all girls, making female athletes the top pursuit.

Girls drop out of athletics at age 14 at twice the rate of boys. We’re trying to buck that trend.”

About 245 female athletes from all over Lancaster and Lebanon counties, ages 9 to 36, populate the Lancaster Inferno academy’s 12 teams - two highly competitive pre-professional teams and 10 youth teams. Some of the older players are former college and local high school stars, some are current high school players, some play soccer with other teams during other seasons and some are relative newcomers just starting to appreciate the game.

The Lancaster Inferno F.C. youth teams practice at Spooky Nook Sports Complex and play some of their games at the Manheim Township Athletic Complex. Cleaves’ first team, which is made up of the

program’s most advanced and competitive players, will be playing five home games at Penn Medicine Park, the Lancaster Stormers’ home stadium, during the 2025 season after calling Warwick High School home last year.

“They are serious players who want to take their games to the next level,” said Cleaves of the first team members. “They’re also players who want to be keep playing at a high level. It’s usually players who see themselves playing professionally; that’s who’s on our first team. We kind of fill that gap between college and pros.”

Many of the Lancaster Inferno F.C. youth programs are year-round ventures with games contested during the spring and fall seasons.

The Lancaster Inferno first team plays a 10-game regular season schedule in the pre-professional United Soccer League (USL) W League from May to July.

“We’re really big on professionalism, just how we run things. We take pride in how we run it,” said Cleaves. “We’re a team for the community. When I tell that to players, it excites them. (The older players) want to be role models. It’s our goal not only to attract the best players, but also to develop them.”

Cleaves and her family purchased the franchise that would become the Lancaster Inferno in 2014. Six years later, the Lancaster Inferno founded an under-23 women’s premier team, and in 2022, the Lancaster Inferno F.C. youth program was launched.

“My favorite part is seeing the young players interact with the senior team players,” said Cleaves, a resident of Lititz. “They look starstruck, like, ‚ÄòThat could be me some day.’ It really impacts you.”

“Seeing that there’s exciting opportunities is huge,” continued Cleaves. “(Players are) learning from experienced coaches. Some could go on to be professional players or coaches or referees. It’s about developing them as confident individuals in life. It teaches them life lessons and about the spirit of soccer. We want to make it an option if they want to play at a higher level.”

Discover Lancaster shares county’s blessings with everyone

Lancaster County is rich in resources, culture and things to do, and in Lancaster County, tourism is big business.

Discover Lancaster takes a proactive approach to drawing visitors to Lancaster County. Its work is designed to maximize and unlock the locale’s full potential and make the area a destination.

“We pack a mighty punch for the size we are,” said Joel Cliff, who’s been Discover Lancaster’s director of communications and advocacy for 17 years. “We have a very robust and vibrant tourism community. We want to share it with as many people as we can. Lancaster County has a great tradition of hospitality.”

Situated at 501 Greenfield Road, Lancaster, Discover Lancaster is the official destination marketing organization of the county. In 2023, 10 million tourists visited Lancaster County, generating $3.4 billion in economic impact and helping to employ 26,000 people in the tourism-related businesses in the areas of attractions, lodging, dining and retail.

“It’s pretty safe to say that Lancaster County is in the top five in the state in terms of number of visitors and visitor spending,” said Cliff. “We’ve broadened the message about what there’s to do in Lancaster County. There are a lot of cool, neat experi-

ences and recreational activities. We’re still changing. We’re continuing to grow. We have a wide geography and a wide demography that we draw from.”

A vast majority of visitors - about 75% - coming to Lancaster County as a destination hail from the metropolitan markets of Philadelphia; New York and Long Island; and Washington, D.C., and Baltimore. For some, it’s a day trip or an overnight stay. For others, it’s a three- or fournight getaway or a weeklong vacation.

They’re coming here for the Amish experience; outlet shopping; historic hidden gems; family attractions; main street shopping found in places like Lititz, Ephrata or Mount Joy; art galleries; wineries, breweries and coffee shops; theater; events; farmers markets; and museums.

“It’s a different experience for people coming from big metropolitan areas,” said Cliff. “It’s folks who know and love the Amish culture, but you also have families coming for attractions like Dutch Wonderland. We certainly draw well with adults and families. Where we’ve been lacking is in that 20s-to30s age group.”

Discover Lancaster employs 14 full-time staff members and eight part-time travel consultants. Discover Lancaster promotes local tourism through straight-up marketing; sales teams working

to bring meetings, conventions and sports teams to the area; and public relations.

“There’s a real quality of life enhancement piece to it,” said Cliff. “It does have that ripple effect to the community and their suppliers. A lot of the things we trumpet are attractive to people thinking about relocating a business here, or a doctor or professor who is being recruited to work in Lancaster County. It’s a great place to come and play, but it’s also a great place to come and work. We also have a sizeable retirement community in the county.”

There are lot of things to see and do in Lancaster County.

“We certainly hold our own,” said Cliff. “We don’t

have an ocean. But we have a lot to do besides that.”

Discover Lancaster receives about 80% of its funding from the Lancaster County hotel tax. In 2015, Discover Lancaster was formed from the former Pennsylvania Dutch Convention and Business Bureau, whose roots can be traced to the 1930s and the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce.

“We definitely very much consider locals in the things we do,” said Cliff. “Locals use our resources as much as visitors do. Locals love Lancaster County. Local tourism is a very important part of what we do, kind of like ‘Get out and enjoy what’s in our backyard.’”

The Barn at Paradise Station to Host “Then Sings My Soul”

Experience joy this Easter season at The Barn at Paradise Station, 312 Paradise Lane, Ronks, with “Then Sings My Soul,” an original musical program all about hymns, their histories, and how they connect to the life and ministry of Billy Graham.

Featuring professional area vocal trio Perfect Harmony, with Katrina King on piano, this program has been performed more than 140 times in the last seven years throughout the Lancaster County area and beyond at locations like Dollywood Theme Park in Pigeon Forge, Tenn.; The Great Auditorium in Ocean Grove, N.J.; and The Billy Graham Library in Charlotte, N.C. The program is now proud to call The Barn at Paradise Station home.

Kat Prickett, owner and producer of LeeP Productions LLC, as well as owner of the iconic Paradise Station property, said, “It is absolutely thrilling to be able to get to share this program with guests from all over the coun-

try, as well as the Lancaster County community, and continue to share the ministry and message of Billy Graham - and that is that God loves you.” The show takes guests on a musical journey through hymns that were made famous by or written by people saved at the historic Billy Graham crusades.

The Paradise Station property houses The Red Caboose Motel, Casey Jones’ Restaurant, and The Barn. The Barn at Paradise Station is the original bank barn on the property, dating back to 1812. After an extensive 18-month renovation process, the venue opened in May of 2023 as a wedding, event, and theatrical venue. It is fully ADA compliant, climate controlled, meticulously restored, and technologically enhanced, allowing theatergoers to experience a professional and inspiring show in a unique and intimate environment.

“Then Sings My Soul” will be presented on Wednesdays, April 9 and 16, and Saturdays, April 12 and 19. For show dates, times, and tickets, visit www.barnatparadisestation .com/events or call 717-288-7942, ext. 118.
