L-S Boys’ Lacrosse Clinch Section Title

BY MONA STEINHAUER

The boys’ lacrosse team clinched its second straight Section Two title with a 15-7 victory at Cocalico Thursday, April 21. The Pioneers, behind five goals and one assist from Colin Sullivan, outscored the Eagles in every quarter, including a 3-0 final frame that determined the outcome.

“I thought we got off to a slow start,” said head coach Mike McConomy. “But we did pick up the intensity starting the second quarter, getting a great team effort on all sides of the ball the rest of the way.

“The defense as a whole did a great job shutting down their attack,” he added. “In moving forward, we need to make sure we’re playing with the same intensity for all four quarters.”

Zach Labreque chipped in with four goals while Stewart McClain (3g, 1a), Barrett Denlinger (3g, 1a), Chase Barber (1a) and Jack Filius (1a), and Brayden Smith with nine ground balls, also contributed.

In non-league play Saturday morning, April 23rd, the Pioneers improved to 12-0 overall with an 18-6 triumph over Hershey. After a slow start, L-S pulled away with a 5-1 run through the second quarter to go up 7-3 at the half and took control with an 8-1 third quarter effort.

Sullivan racked up another five goals and dished out three assists. Labreque (4g, 3a), Filius (3g), McClain (2g, 1a), B Denlinger (4a), G Denlinger (1g) and Alex Weese (1a) rounded out the offensive totals.

“Drexton Frank led the team with six ground balls,” said McConomy.

Wednesday’s 15-5 thrashing over Lancaster Co. Day/LCHS featured five goals and one assist from Denlinger. McClain and Sullivan added hat tricks, Fillius scored twice with Wagner and Barber adding one goal each.

TENNIS

After clinching the Section Two title, their first since 2007, with a 6-1 final over Cocalico, the Pioneers (7-0 Section Two, 7-7 overall) faced Manheim Township, the second-place team in Section One, in the L-L League team tournament Thursday, April 21 in Neffsville. The Streaks prevailed 3-0.

“I knew we would have our hands full in singles,” said head coach Mark Trach, “but I thought we would do well in doubles.”

Weston Weaver, Andrew Reidenbaugh and Spencer Teaman all lost in straight sets.

Cole Teaman and Kyle Pawson and Jack Harnish and Joe Fitzgerald both suffered a 6-4 first set loss and did not finish out doubles play as Township’s singles sweep clinched the outcome.

SOFTBALL

The softball team ran its winning streak to seven straight with a pair of backto-back one run games. Monday they held a 5-0 lead before giving up a three-run bomb in the sixth and holding on for a 5-4 thriller over Hempfield. One day later they took undefeated Penn Manor to eight innings before Brook Zuber’s game-winning single plated Maura Savoca.

Lampeter’s ace in the circle, Keiva Middleton, gave up two hits, struck out 16 and walked five, one intentionally, to earn the win.

“Keiva pitched a great game,” said Comet boss Dave Stokes.

“It was a pitcher’s duel,” added Earl Rutledge, Lampeter’s head coach. “They struggled with her change up.

Savoca opened the eighth with a walk and, after two outs, Middleton walked, setting the stage for Zuber’s game-winner.

Prior to Hempfield, the Pioneers shut out Ephrata, 8-0 on April 21 and blanked McCaskey 21-0 one day later. Ally Raub tossed a two-hitter against McCaskey, striking out nine.

“Ally pitched well,” said Rutledge. “She would be the starting pitcher on many teams in the league.”

Zuber went 3-3 with three RBI. Middletown, Kara Scranton and Savoca added two hits and three RBIs each.

Wednesday’s 13-5 win over CV featured 18 total hits, including seven home runs, and 6 total errors (4 by the Bucks). Middleton fanned 13 batters and did not give up a walk. CV’s Henry retired nine, walked six and surrendered four homers.

Zuber pushed in five runs with a pair of homers. Middleton and Raub also hit round trippers.

The pole vaulters to Quarryville Friday, April 22, to finish their meet against Solanco and both squads prevailed. Solanco’s best vaulter PR’d by 15 inches to win but Mitchell Livengood cleared a personal best 11-6 to grab second and Luke Wiley’s 10-6 took third. “Those four points put us over the top for a squeaker, 7674 win,” said head coach Calvin Esh.

For the girls, Jessie Salgado, Maya Carl and Kyleigh Herr made it a clean sweep, leaving L-S with a comfortable 95-55 team victory.

On Saturday, the team competed in the Jack Roddick Invitational (94 teams) at Shippensburg and turned in a handful of impressive results. Colin Whitaker won the 3200 and set a new school record with a 9:07.62 and Luka Vranich broke the school record in the 800 with a thirdplace finish at 1:55.54. Maggie Swarr added a third in the javelin (119-8) and Teagan Weaver was sixth in the 100 (11.10).

In league competition Monday against Garden Spot, the girls 23-4 domination of the throws sparked an 89-61 victory. Swarr led sweeps in the discus and shot with McTaggart and Franco taking second and third in both and completed an individual throwing sweep by winning the javelin as well.

On the track, L-S won the 4x800 with Tori Heiserman, who also won the open 800, Olivia Magagna, Mikayla Coe and Jaclyn Martin and the 4x400 with Madison Malcolm, Madison Weichler, Magagna and Hannah Gawne, the 200 winner.

Other firsts went to Lyndi Wall (800), Keira Smecker (3200), Elly Bruner (long) and Salgado (pole vault).

The boys’ team also had a triple winner and won a hardfought outing against the Spartans, 82-67. Weaver won both the dashes and took the long jump in addition to anchoring the winning 4x100 relay with Carson Coleman, Zach Mulron, and Mitchell Livengood.

A pole vault sweep was the highlight in the field as Luke Wiley, Livengood and Christian Medina claimed the top three spots. Aiden Jones and Daniel Jones went 1-2 in the javelin, Whitaker won the 800 and was second in the mile behind Ben Devine.

BASEBALL

The Pioneers rounded out crossover action with mixed results over the last week topping McCaskey 5-1 on April 22 and suffering a 10-0 loss against Hempfield last Monday. In between they dropped a tough five inning outing against Chambersburg, 11-0, their first shutout of the season.

L-S broke a 1-1 tie against McCaskey on Jason Long’s base hit in the bottom of the fourth and went on to score three more over the final frames for the win.

Brayden Adams went 2-3 with a double to lead the fivehit effort. Peyton Harsh earned the win with eight strikeouts and one walk over six innings. Anthony Turek struck out one in the seventh.

On Saturday, Chambersburg exploded for 11 runs in the bottom of the fourth to end the game early. The Trojans finished with seven hits but took advantage of two errors and six walks, five in that fateful inning.

Isaiah Parido went 2-2 to lead the Pioneers.

On Monday the Knights recorded nine hits and scored in four of five innings to end the game early. Gio Malatesta’s single in the third prevented a no-hitter.

Two days later, Lampeter’s seventh inning rally fell short in a 5-4 loss to CV. G. Harsh took the loss. He struck out five, walked one, scattered six hits and gave up two earned runs.
