Backyard Oasis:

A LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT CAN HELP

A well-maintained landscape is important to many homeowners. In addition to adding to a home’s aesthetic appeal, a lush landscape can also help increase a home’s resale value. Some homeowners without much experience tending to lawns and gardens hire a landscape architect to do the job for them. First-time homeowners on the lookout for a landscape architect should consider the following tips to make the most of that process. Find a professional who will work with you. Though you might not plan to do any of the landscaping or gardening, that doesn’t mean you won’t have a vision of what you want the property to look like. A landscape architect should be receptive to your ideas and willing to work with your vision while keeping the channels of communication open throughout the project. Look for a professional with some experience. A landscape architect should be ready and willing to discuss his or her previous work experience. Ask to see photos of previous work or even local addresses where work was done so you can see the finished product in person. Landscape architects without extensive work histories aren’t necessarily unqualified, but homeowners should weigh the projects such architects have completed considerably. Discuss subcontractors. Some landscape architects will handle the project entirely on their own, while others might subcontract part of the project. Determine who will be performing the project and how the hiring of subcontractors might affect the cost of the project. Discuss fees and get a fee schedule. How the project will be paid for is an important thing to discuss when interviewing landscape architects. Each contractor might have a different fee structure, so you will want the one that’s best suited to you. If a series of payments will be made, get a fee schedule so there’s no confusion down the road. Get references. A professional landscape architect should have a list of references at the ready for potential customers. When contacting references, be sure to ask how satisfied they are with the finished product and how the project went with regards to scheduling and fees. When talking to a previous customer, also ask how amenable the landscape architect was to their ideas and how much he or she involved the homeowner in the project. Make sure the contractor is licensed. In many communities, landscape architects must be licensed. This information is public, so always verify if a landscape architect is licensed prior to making any final decisions or signing a contract.

HIRING A LAWN CARE PROFESSIONAL Many homeowners hire a lawn care professional to tend to their lawns and gardens. To hire a quality service or individual, homeowners need to do a little homework. * Compare prices. Professional landscapers offer an array of services and, as a result, those services vary in cost. Ask neighbors and friends what they pay for routine maintenance and any other special services. Get recommendations for companies that do work you admire. * Interview prospective companies. Set up appointments or price quotes from three different lawn care services. Compare the offerings and the prices. Ask questions about whether pricing is “per week” or “per cut.” Determine if services such as edging, blowing away debris, trimming, and clean-up are included. * Find out about extras. Some services will offer packages for spring and fall clean-up, and homeowners should inquire about any special offers during the initial comparison stage. * Who does the work? A company may farm out work to other landscapers. Figure out who will be arriving each week and base decisions accordingly. [4] home appeal May 2012

choosing native plants

One of the best ways to improve a home’s resale value is to address the landscape. Increasing a property’s curb appeal can be done in many ways, but a well-pruned lawn and garden gives buyers the impression that the sellers truly took the time to maintain the home and the surrounding property. U n f o r t u n a t e l y, many homeowners choose exotic plants when addressing their landscape. Though these plants can be appealing and make a property stand out, if the plants are not native to the region, they could be doing more harm than good. Instead of upgrading your property with exotic plants, consider the following benefits of choosing native plants. * Native plants benefit local wildlife. Native plants and native wildlife depend upon on another, with each doing their part to ensure the other’s survival. But as development continues, local wildlife may suffer because of lost food sources. The local wildlife needs local, native plants to survive, so choosing these plants instead of exotic plants can help ensure the survival of wildlife that helps keep the ecosystem in check. * Native plants require less work. Some prospective home buyers might find a yard filled with exotic plants to be visually stunning, but they might also see a good deal of work to maintain those plants. Many exotic plants require significant work on a homeowner’s part to survive, while native plants have

already adapted to the local climate and will require much less care. This is often attractive to current and future homeowners alike.

* Native plants might be a better i n v e s t m e n t.

A native plant has adapted over the years to survive in its given area. Local insect populations and fungal infections might be able to destroy an exotic plant, but a native plant has grown resistant to such problems and likely has the ability to fight such infestations or infections on its own. An exotic plant might require costly pesticides and considerable attention from homeowners to survive such problems.

Did you know? Ecoscaping is a growing trend among homeowners who want to take care of their lawns and landscapes but want to do so in a way that’s environmentally friendly. Integrating both landscape architecture and spatial planning with environmental science, ecoscaping is meant to help homeowners create a sustainable and eco-friendly landscape design. It’s natural to assume that ecoscaping includes looking for ways to reduce reliance on chemical pesticides, but there are many additional ways homeowners can embrace ecoscaping. This includes removing or refusing to plant invasive plants that are difficult to control and can threaten local wildlife and existing plants. Another way to embrace ecoscaping is to develop a planting strategy wherein plants are planted in beneficial growing conditions that can eliminate the need for chemical fertilizers and excessive watering.

ESTABLISHING and MAINTAINING

PROPER POOL WATER

HEMISTRY

A backyard swimming pool is a welcome respite from the hot sun and summer heat waves. Pools can provide exercise and enjoyment for those of any age, which is why the installation of a pool is often a popular home improvement project. Once you have established the size, type and shape of the swimming pool you wish to install and have secured the proper building permits and contractors needed to complete the project, your next main task should be to familiarize yourself with pool water chemistry. A pool is essentially useless without clean, hygienic water. Achieving clean water starts by knowing the terminology related to testing pool water and understanding what is necessary to keep pool water clear and safe for swimming. There are five different chemical levels with which a pool owner should be familiar. Here are the basics related to each. CHLORINE Even the most wet-behind-the-ears pool owner knows that he or she will need a disinfecting agent in the pool, which is commonly a chlorinebased product. Chlorine serves as a sanitizer that kills off germs and keeps the pool safe. There are many different types of chlorine sanitizers on the market, from liquid chlorinator, to slow-dissolving tablets, to powdered forms that must be dissolved in water. In terms of checking chlorine levels, you should be familiar with free chlorine, or FC, combined chlorine (CC) and total chlorine (TC). Free chlorine refers to the active amount of chlorine in the pool water that is available to sanitize it. Organic matter in the pool, as well as sunlight, can use up free chlorine very quickly. It is good to habitually check the FC level on a daily basis and add chlorine as needed to keep the level adequate for your size pool. It is best to add chlorine to raise FC in the evening, when it will not be affected by sunlight. Combined chlorine is the broken-down amount of chlorine used in the pool -- in other words, the used-up chlorine. This is what causes the “chlorine smell” many people associate with over-chlorinated pools. In essence, a chlorine smell means that your pool likely needs more available fresh chlorine. CC indicates there is something in the pool that the FC is trying to break down. As long as you maintain an appropriate FC level, CC and its accompanying odor should remain at near zero. Total chlorine is the sum of FC and CC in pool water. When you use an inexpensive water test that only measures one form of chlorine,

it is likely TC. This is usually adequate for testing if the water is clear. However, in the presence of algae or another water problem, TC level is useless on its own as a barometer of water quality. TOTAL ALKALINITY AND PH The proper pH, or balance of alkalinity or acidity of the water, must be maintained to prevent irritation of the skin and eyes and to prevent corrosion of the pool equipment. Many pools tend to drift upward to the high level over time. This may result in eye burning that is often blamed on chlorine levels. The pH is raised with borax or washing soda (often the same chemical used in pH “Up” in pool stores), and it can be lowered using muriatic acid. Total alkalinity (TA) is the water’s ability to buffer pH changes. This means you will need less product to change the pH. The level of TA needed varies depending on the type of pool wall material (plaster or vinyl). In general, pH levels between 70 and 90 are fine for most pools. WATER HARDNESS Water hardness, also known as calcium hardness, indicates the amount of calcium in the water. Plaster pools are susceptible to damage from low calcium levels because the water will then tend to dissolve calcium out of plaster, stone, concrete, tiles, and other surfaces that make up the structure. Homeowners with a vinyl-lined pool typically don’t have to worry about calcium levels. CYANURIC ACID Cyanuric acid (CA) protects chlorine from deterioration in the sunlight and will correspond to the amount of FC needed in the pool. CA is often called stabilizer because it helps to lock in the chlorine in the water and make it less susceptible to breakdown from the sun. It is important to keep the FC and CA balanced; otherwise you could use more chlorine or stabilizer than is necessary. In general, the more CA in the pool, the more chlorine will be needed to keep the pool clean. Keep in mind that many tablets contain both chlorine and CA, which could be detrimental because there will be a constant increase in CA, necessitating more and more chlorine. A thorough pool water test kit will measure all of these levels and help you gauge when to add each chemical. Because pool chemicals can be expensive, frequently testing your pool water levels can enable you to make small adjustments, rather than having to deal with cloudy, green or unsafe water when these problems occur seemingly out of nowhere.

Proper pool chemistry is essential to maintaining healthy and clean water. [8] home appeal May 2012

CEMENT OR PAVERS?

THE BEST TILLER ON EARTH No Belts • No Chains • No Equal

THE CHOICE IS YOURS When faced with the prospect of designing a walkway or a patio, decisions have to be made as to the material used. Homeowners have many options at their disposal, but concrete and paving stones are two of the more popular materials. Each has its share of advantages and disadvantages. Here’s a comparison of both. Pavers offer a breadth of different design possibilities. They come in many different sizes, shapes, colors, and textures. Pavers also can be mixed and matched to create the desired aesthetic. Paving stones are not permanent, which can be good and bad. When laid correctly, they will be durable and attractive. However, if not given an adequate layer of sand and base material, stones can shift or pop up. Polymeric sand is recommended to fill the joints to prevent weed growth. In communities where more permanent hardscapes require permits, paving stones can be a way around this extra step. Also, because of the individual blocks, installing pavers may be something homeowners are more inclined to try as a DIY project. Keep in mind that, due to the intricate work involved, the cost of paving stones may be higher than other materials. This can be a significant factor when choosing between one material or another.

Concrete

Concrete has been used for decades thanks to its durability and permanence. This permanence is what draws many to concrete in a home landscape, but it also pushes others away. Concrete is a continuous, poured piece of pavement. Because it is less labor-intensive to pour concrete, it is often a more affordable option for patios and pathways. But once concrete has cured, the only way to change the look is to break it up and start over again. For homeowners who want to revamp their landscapes, the permanence of concrete just will not work. Shifting of the underlying ground or even an unforeseeable occurrence, such as an earthquake, can make concrete crack and buckle, which will require repair. But beyond that, the material is very durable and often stands up well to many applications. The ability to stamp patterns into concrete and add tint to the concrete mixture enables homeowners to create different looks that may mimic the appearance of pavers at a lower cost. Therefore, homeowners won’t have to settle on gray or white concrete in a landscape design. Concrete can cost between $6 and $9 per square foot. Pavers may be between $10 and $15 per square foot depending on the type of stone used. A mixture of plants and hardscape in a yard can offer the right balance for a beautiful space. When choosing between different materials, homeowners can weigh the pros and cons of each before choosing a design plan.
