There are quite a few tall tales surrounding Manheim resident Jack Fasig - literally. Jack, who was born in 1894, was famous for his height and strength. He was 7 feet tall and weighed 400 pounds. Despite his size, however, Jack was known for being a kind man. Author Mike Gerhard tells the story of Jack in a new children’s book, “Gentle Giant: A Story of Jack Fasig, Legend of Lancaster.”
Geared toward children ages 4 to 10, the book teaches a lesson about kindness. “Jack was very powerful and very kind,” Gerhard wrote in the story. “He was not a bully. He used his great strength to help others. Jack knew that with great power came a greater responsibility.”
To write the book, Gerhard did extensive research on Jack, working with Cory Van Brookhoven, president of the Lititz Historical Foundation; the Manheim Historical Society; the Historical Society of Pennsylvania; and other people and organizations.
Although much of the book is historically accurate, the story begins with a disclaimer: “Some of what follows is true.” While Gerhard embellished some of the tales of Jack’s size and strength, he included facts such as Jack’s nicknames, including “Man Mountain” and “Lancaster’s Paul Bunyan.” The book also details Jack’s intelligence, noting that he was valedictorian of his high school, often quoted Shakespeare and was known for singing German operas.
Gerhard, who grew up in Lititz but moved to Manheim when he married his wife, Donna, worked at Raymark years ago. “Everyone there talked about Jack,” he recalled.
“They said how big and strong he was, and there were all kinds of rumors about him.”
Over the years, Gerhard began collecting information on Jack. He thought he might write a novel about Jack but struggled to complete it. “Then my daughter said, ‘Dad, you like to draw. Why not do a children’s book?’” Gerhard recalled.
“One of the reasons I wanted to do this book was to tell Jack’s story and make sure he is not forgotten.”
Gerhard worked on the book during the height of the pandemic, some days spending 10 minutes on it, some days working for hours to write the story and draw the illustrations. Once the book was finished, he considered publishing it through a traditional publisher, but changed his mind once he realized that could take a while. “I’m 72,” he said. “Most of the publishers said it could be six months till they got back to me, and I can’t wait that long.” Instead, he self-published the book, which was released in late 2022.
Depending on how this book is received, Gerhard said he’d love to write a sequel. He hopes that children will take away an important message from the book. “I wanted to teach a lesson,” he said. “Kindness is its own reward.”
Gerhard will sign copies of his book at Stauffers of Kissel Hill, 945 E. Main St., Mount Joy, on Saturday, Jan. 7, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The book is available for sale at Longeneckers True Value, 127 Doe Run Road, Manheim, and on Amazon.

“January is a time when a lot of people make resolutions and spend time reflecting, looking over the past year,” said Heather Lindsey, owner of Creative Inspirationz Gallery in Manheim. With that idea in mind, Lindsey is organizing the “Interpretation of Time” art show. “It’s about the question, ‘What does
time mean to you? How do you interpret time?’”
The show will open on Friday, Jan. 6, at the Honeybee Café, 1469A Lancaster Road, Manheim. “The show is hosted by both Honeybee Café and Creative Inspirationz,” Lindsey noted. “The artwork will be on display for the rest of the month of January in Honeybee Café’s event space.” See Art pg 2

Opening event festivities will run from 7 to 9 p.m. and will include performances of lyrical dance by Manheimbased Balance Dance. “Part of their classes requires students
to put a choreography piece together,” Lindsey remarked. “They’ll be showcasing what they choreographed.”
Local musician Tammy Ober will play the violin and
piano, and local cake artist Nicole Dunkle will provide refreshments, with desserts designed to the theme of the show.
Lindsey has been hosting art shows over the past year, with themes including sunflowers and cardinals. “These shows are doing well,” she said. “The art has prices people can afford.”
This is the first time Lindsey has done a show with the time theme, but she hopes to make it an annual event. “The goal of these art shows is to give artists a platform where they maybe have not had the opportunity to have one before,” she shared. “It’s not a juried show. You don’t need to have connections or have built up a reputation in the industry to participate. It’s open to anyone.”
Lindsey’s partnership with Honeybee Café also includes Creative Thursdays, which currently happen about twice a month. “This is a free arts and crafts event we do,” she
explained. “I donate materials and the owner of Honeybee Café donates materials, and I teach the project.” At the most recent Creative Thursday, participants enjoyed a reading of “The Polar Express,” decorated mugs and took home a packet of hot cocoa mix and a candy cane.
“Our goal is to provide fun art activities for everyone,” Lindsey said. “It’s all free, and we want to build up to offering it every Thursday.”
As for the “Interpretation of Time” art show, Lindsey said opening night attendees can expect a fun evening out.
“A variety of art forms will be featured, from music to dance to cake art,” she commented.
“It’s going to be a really nice night of embracing the arts in our local community. And the theme of the art is deep. This is art that will make you think.”

W hen driving through eastern Lancaster County on Lincoln Highway, you might not notice a small, yellow building between Ronks and Soudersburg. Although the unassuming structure could pass as a quaint residence, within its walls resides a unique collection of history that has been assembled by its curator, Stephen Meyers.
Bible History Exhibits, located at 2827 East Lincoln Highway in Ronks, boasts a display of archaeological replicas and information that is related to the Bible. The exhibit begins with the book of Genesis and follows the Bible’s timeline through the book of Revelation; replicas of tablets, statues, weapons and scrolls that reference the events of the Bible are placed in chronological order in the display. “Most people may be reading the Bible but may not

know that there’s a lot of archaeology and discoveries that directly relate to it,” Meyers said.
Each replica refers to civilizations or events that existed at the same time as biblical characters if it does not refer to these characters directly. The beginning of the exhibit displays replicas of tablets that refer to the epic of Gilgamesh, the Great Flood and the Tower of Babel. Archaeological discoveries made in Egypt populate the section of the exhibit that documents the book of Exodus, followed by replicas of artifacts from Israel, Assyria, Babylon, Persia and Greece in biblical times.
“The real artifacts are in museums around the world,” Meyers said. “I’ve made replicas and brought them together so that you don’t have to travel to the other side of the globe to see everything.” Meyers occasionally acquires repli-
cas from other people, but more often he creates the replicas himself. He stays up to date on the latest news of archeological discoveries so that he can recreate them and add them to the exhibit. Each segment of the exhibit is also accompanied by informational pieces that detail how some of the artifacts were created or used. One such educational display shows how ancient peoples tanned leather and treated papyrus to fashion into scrolls.
In addition to the artifacts and informational displays, Bible History Exhibits is peppered with photographs that Meyers took himself while traveling through the Middle East. When he is not traveling to the ancient world, Meyers resides in Philadelphia, where he moved from Ohio to attend Westminster Theological Seminary. He opened Bible History Exhibits about eight years ago and stays in Lan-
caster while the museum is open.
Meyers has also written several booklets on various historical topics, which he sells online and at the exhibit. Almost every item in the exhibit is for sale, and the profits from their sales help to keep the exhibit open. Bible History Exhibits operates under The Institute for Biblical and Scientific Studies, a nonprofit organization.

Bible History Exhibits comprises replicas of ancient artifacts that relate to the Bible.
“It was absolutely amazing,” said Kalvin’s mom, Meredith Swartzendruber. “At first, he said, ‘They just told me what I’m wishing for,’ and we said, ‘No, honey, you’re getting your wish.’ His brother caught on faster and said, ‘We’re going to Disneyland!’” Kalvin and his 10-year-old brother, Ayden, attended the wish reveal with their mom and their dad, Adam.
Kalvin was born with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome, a congenital growth disorder. He has also battled cancer, but he is now cancer-free. “Throughout his treatment, we would watch Disney (theme park) videos,” Meredith recalled. “They helped distract him from things that were going on around him.” One ride he particularly loved was the Incredicoaster, which is only in Disney California Adventure Park, part of Disneyland. “He would say, ‘I want to go on this ride. I want to go to California Disney.’ It became a nice little mental distraction for him,” Meredith noted. The family took the trip to California in midDecember.
The Swartzendrubers moved to Elizabethtown in August of 2021. Kalvin was already undergoing routine ultrasounds because of his syndrome, and during one, doctors discovered a mass on his kidney. Within two weeks, Kalvin began chemotherapy, enduring 13 rounds and experiencing a rare side effect of
the treatment that affected his liver and required hospitalization. Part of his kidney was also removed during treatment.
The current first-grader was homebound from school for three months during treatment, but kept a positive attitude, Meredith said. “He’s looking forward to playing Tball this spring,” she shared.
“He loves dancing. I’ll put on music, and he’ll just dance.”
Kalvin’s wish was revealed at a kickoff planning meeting for the 2023 Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy. The convoy is a major fundraiser for the organization, generating more than $500,000 last year, with proceeds used to grant wishes like Kalvin’s.

PennDOT Offers Safety Message
PennDOT urges motorists to avoid travel, if possible, when snowy and icy conditions arise. If travel is necessary, motorists should use caution, reduce speeds, and be aware of changing weather conditions.
To help make decisions regarding winter travel, motorists are encouraged to “Know Before You Go” by checking conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles, including color-coded winter conditions on 2,900 miles, by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information, and access to more than 1,000 traffic cameras. Users can also see the status of plow trucks and travel alerts along a specific route using the “Check My Route” tool.
511PA is also available through a smartphone application for iPhone and Android devices, by calling 5-1-1, or by following regional Twitter alerts.
Drivers should prepare or restock their emergency kits with items such as nonperishable food, water, first aid supplies, warm clothes, a blanket, a cellphone charger, and a small snow shovel. Motorists should tailor their kits to any specific needs that they or their families have, such as baby supplies, extra medication, and pet supplies.
When winter weather occurs, drivers should be extra cautious around operating snow removal equipment. When encountering a plow truck, drivers should stay at least six car lengths behind an operating plow truck and remember that the main plow is wider than the truck.

Drivers should be alert since plow trucks generally travel much more slowly than other traffic. When a plow truck is traveling toward a vehicle, the driver should move as far away from the center of the road as is safely possible and remember that snow can obscure the actual snow plow width.
Additionally, drivers should never try to pass or get between several trucks plowing side by side in a plow train. The weight of the snow thrown from the plow can quickly cause smaller vehicles to lose control, creating a hazard for nearby vehicles.
Drivers should never travel next to a plow truck since there are blind spots where the operator cannot see, and they can occasionally be moved sideways when hitting drifts or heavy snowpack.
Also, drivers should keep their lights on to help the operator see their vehicle better. Drivers should also remember that under Pennsylvania state law, vehicle lights must be on every time a vehicle’s wipers are on due to inclement weather.
Motorists are reminded that the law requires drivers to remove accumulated ice or snow from their vehicle, including the hood, trunk, and roof, within 24 hours after the storm has ended. This applies to all vehicles, including commercial vehicles. Drivers in violation of the law are subject to a fine of $50. Additionally, motorists can be cited up to $1,500 if snow or ice is dislodged and strikes another vehicle or pedestrian causing death or serious injury.
