Changing The World, One Horse - And One Human - At A Time BY CATHY MOLITORIS
In a pasture off Union School Road in Mount Joy, horses and humans are healing. Lone Oak Animal-Assisted Therapeutic and Educational Services provides equine therapy to people, while also helping horses that have been abused as they work on their recovery. The
organization is the vision of Heather Girvin, a lifelong horsewoman who is also a social services professional and associate professor at Millersville University. She started Lone Oak as a pilot program in 2020, confident that matching people who were hurting with rescued horses could have vast benefits for both the humans and the equines. See Changing pg 2

Connecting Christ, Community And Music une your radio dial to FM 90.3, and you’ll connect with a community. That’s where you’ll find WJTL, a contemporary Christian station that’s been bringing “Christ, community and music” to listeners since the 1980s. “We want to be a touchstone for the community,” said Fred McNaughton, president and CEO. “ We want to offer wholesome, family-oriented music and events that can impact people’s lives.” WJTL is located at the Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim, a spacious, state-of-the-art facility with room for community events and concerts, but the station had humble beginnings. “We started in 1984, in a chicken house across from Lancaster Bible College,” McNaughton recalled, noting that challenges in the early days included running wiring along beams covered in petrified chicken poop and dodging low-hanging rafters while working. The station was owned then by Joy Broadcasting, a company that operated stations across the country. “They named their stations for their locations, so ‘JTL’ was ‘Joy to Lancaster,’” McNaughton said.
louder side of WJTL,” and Kristi Leigh offers a Sunday morning praise and worship program. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the station invites nonprofit organizations to the studio to share their mission with listeners. In addition to running WJTL, McNaughton is a morning DJ on the station. “I get up at 3 a.m. to come to work, and I still get up every day excited to be on the radio,” he said. His passion for Christian music began as a youth when he started buying 99-cent records at the Christian Light bookstore in Elizabethtown. “This music and these musicians were speaking a language I identified with, and it was a style of music that showed me the kind of life I wanted to live,” he said. That’s what he hopes WJTL continues to do every day for its listeners. “Radio is there for people. It’s such a personal medium, and it’s about relationships and connection with people,” he commented. “So many listeners tell us they feel that a song was played just for them. They have a personal connection to what’s on the air.” For more information on WJTL, visit https://wjtl.com.

When Joy Broadcasting wanted to sell the station in 1990, Tim Landis, who founded the nonprofit Creative Ministries, mounted a campaign to save the station. Creative Ministries purchased WJTL in 1991 and continues to operate it today. After a stint in a building behind Friendly’s on Oregon Pike in Lancaster, WJTL moved to its current location in 2011. No matter where it called home, however, WJTL has remained singularly focused on its mission. “We are totally funded by our listeners. When people are touched by what we impart and what we do here, they support us, so it’s really a true partnership,” McNaughton stated. “Our listeners are the ones programming the station.” While the core of WJTL is contemporary Christian music, the station also offers a variety of specialty programming. The Kids Cookie Break, hosted by Lisa Landis, runs on Saturday mornings. On Saturdays from 9 p.m. to midnight, The Archives spotlights what McNaughton calls “early Jesus music from the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s.” On Fridays and Saturdays, WJTL features “Some Sort of Rock Show,” which McNaughton deems “the

In addition to working alongside the horses, participants also experience expressive arts therapy (EAT) at Lone Oak, which aims to enhance well-being and create a foundation for post-traumatic growth and healing. Sessions include painting, drawing or music. Girvin said one of the things she’s noticed most about the interaction between the humans and the horses has been restoration for all involved. “The clients see the horse and how the horse has gone through recovery, and that helps them develop empathy,” she stated. As a nonprofit, Lone Oak relies on fundraisers and community donations to succeed. Boarding one horse costs hundreds of dollars, with extra costs for vet care and far-
rier services. All money raised goes directly to providing horse care and funding programs. On a recent afternoon, Girvin had a firsthand view of how the program is working when she saw Sammie, a horse who had suffered extreme abuse, warm up to a group of boys after weeks of being standoffish. “The boys were standing together, and she came right up and nuzzled in between them,” she recalled. “I told them, ‘She’s choosing to stand with you.’ They felt valued. No matter what their background is or what they’ve gone through, this horse wants to be near them. Horses can sense goodness.” For more information on Lone Oak, visit www.loneoaktherapeutic.org.

At a program, participants might groom the horses, lead them around the ring or go for a ride. “Sometimes, clients come, and we just stand out in the field and pet the horses,” said Abbie Wilson, one of the therapists. Being around horses provides a natural opportunity for conversation, she noted. “Some kids don’t want to sit in a chair in a room with a therapist and talk,” she explained. “You get them around a horse, and their mouth just goes and goes.”

County residents can dispose of their Christmas trees in an environmentally friendly way by dropping them at the Lancaster County Central Park mulching site between dawn and dusk through Monday, Jan. 31. The park mulching program is for Christmas trees only. No other yard waste will be accepted. Trees must be free of decorations, lights, plastic bags and hardware, including nails in the trunk. There is a three-tree limit per vehicle. Commercial haulers are strongly advised to contact their local municipalities for their respective Christmas tree recycling locations. There is a suggested nominal donation for each tree. Donations will go toward the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. Trees from the nursery are utilized throughout the county park system. Moss, a former professor at Franklin & Marshall College and a founding member of the Lancaster Environmental Action Federation (LEAF), worked to promote the conservation of natural resources for the improvement of
Simon Says, “Fitness Is Fun”
the environment of Lancaster County’s public parks and open spaces. In 2000, LEAF donated funds to the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation for the creation of a nursery in memory of Moss. According to park officials, residents drop off approximately 1,000 Christmas trees each year, which produce 15 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas and for many deciduous ornamental trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic soil conditions. The mulch will be available to residents on a first-come, firstserved basis after Thursday, Jan. 6, near the tree drop-off site. Persons desiring free mulch should bring a pitchfork or shovel and a bag or a trailer to transport it home. For more information about the Christmas tree mulching program, residents may call the park office at 717-299-8215 on Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. To learn more about the Lancaster County park system, visit www.lancaster countyparks.org.

The email from Simon Ababou, fitness director at the Lititz recCenter, 301 W. Maple St., Lititz, was dotted with exclamation points. “We have something to share with the community!” it read. “It’s all about the fitness center renovation! Now we have a circuit training room beside the big fitness center.” Ababou’s excitement was understandable. The circuit training room was first proposed by Ababou, and approved by his supervisor and the board, in spring of 2021. “The construction was supposed to happen in the summer, but with COVID everything is late,” Ababou explained. In early October, the new circuit training center in Studio 1 opened with 16 Life Fitness Machines designed to exercise upper and lower body muscles. According to Ababou, three large windows, along with glass doors offer visibility to other fitness areas. The new room provides comfortable space to exercise on machines that combine strength and cardio training and use repetition to build endurance. The equipment offers variety, but it also can be customized for intensity. “Circuit training is for everyone,” said Ababou. “With circuit training, you can do upper body, lower body, cardio - all in 30 minutes if you don’t stop.” The room also includes access to the free weight area for more equipment, and Ababou noted that those who use free weights may want to finish their
workout in the circuit training room. Ababou noted that the new center was created by necessity, pointing out that the trend toward using free weights was causing issues. “Things were getting overcrowded in the weight room with the circuits and the free weights,” said Ababou, who noted that many students exercise in the free weight area in the afternoon, at the same time active adults are often working out. “It was challenging after school,” explained Ababou, who added that he was happy to have the students there but that the crowding brought safety concerns. Ababou made a plan, which culminated in the opening of the center. For new members or members who are not familiar with circuit training, orientations are available. “We meet twice,” said Ababou, who noted that the first meeting is a consultation that takes into account target heart rate and exercise history before starting with the cardio machine and maybe six or seven others. A followup appointment in the next few weeks includes instructions on the other machines. “With older adults, we can also do assessments first to know the strength level,” said Ababou. For safety reasons, no one under 12 is permitted in the fitness center. Youth ages 12 and 13 must be supervised by a parent, guardian, or coach at all times. To schedule a free member fitness center orientation, contact simonababou@lititzrec.com or 717626-5096, ext. 239.

teams in every Lancaster County school district for the spring semester, and coaches will be needed to help make that happen. “We are really looking for the support of the community and for coaches to get involved (because) the need will be greater than ever to serve more girls this spring,” said West. Teams have also formed at community sites, such as parks and churches. Coaching requires a commitment of up to three hours a week, and Sandoe noted that GOTR coaches need not be teachers. “The majority of sites are schools, but you don’t have to be a teacher to coach,” she said. “We would love that our coaches reflect the community that we serve,” she said, adding that coaches need not even live within the district where they coach. West added that mothers, fathers, and community
members can be coaches. “You don’t have to be a runner,” she said. “We welcome anybody and everybody to coach girls.” Volunteer GOTR coaches receive benefits, including guaranteeing a daughter a spot on a team and receiving a discount for her registration. Free CPR and first aid training are offered, and all coaches are trained to lead teams. “It’s a chance to be a positive role model and inspiration to the girls - a leader and someone to talk to,” said West. According to Sandoe, coaches have told her that they witness positive changes in team members. “They say, ‘I have seen how it transforms how the girls think about themselves and each other and their attitudes,’” she reported, adding that teachers have told her they believe in the impact of the program because they see GOTR lessons lived out in

their classrooms. GOTR is a youth development program that encourages confidence, character, care, connection, competence, and contributing to community. One international study found that 85% of girls in the program showed gains in those areas, along with increased long-term physical activity and critical life skills. Registration for the 2022 spring season will open Tuesday, Feb. 1, and the season will begin on Monday, March 7. The GOTR 5K presented by
OAL will be held on Saturday, May 21, at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster. The fall 5K at Millersville attracted 1,000 runners, including 400 girls, running buddies, and immediate family members. “If you’re interested in learning more about coaching … we encourage (you) to reach out,” said Sandoe. Those who are interested in coaching may contact Jennifer West at jwest@gotrlancaster.org. More information about the program and the 5K may be found at www.gotrlancaster.org.
