Like many 8-year-olds, Viola Rothacker loves animals. She even has a favorite pet, but it’s not furry or four-legged. It’s a Mexican kingsnake named Dandelion. She’s completely comfortable around snakes, lizards, turtles and other creatures, handling them like a pro, because loving reptiles is in her DNA. Her father, Jesse Rothacker, operates Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary out of his home in Manheim.

Jesse started Forgotten Friend in 2004. “I knew there were a lot of people looking for a place to rehome reptiles,” he said, noting that many people underestimate how large reptiles will grow as well as their long lifespan. He realized that places like Humane Pennsylvania couldn’t easily take in reptiles since their shelters were already full of cats and dogs. “I know people love reptiles, and I knew there was a need for a rescue,” Jesse recalled. “I thought, ‘I can start one.’”

Jesse, who grew up in southern California but moved to Lititz as a teen, has been a lifelong reptile fan. “In the ’90s as a teenager, I got my first pet snake, Leon,” he stated. “I loved him, and I took him everywhere.” In fact, he even got a detention at Warwick High School, where he graduated in the Class of 2000, for bringing Leon to school without permission.

In the early days of Forgotten Friend, he took in every reptile he could, with the hopes of rehoming them all. As the rescue grew, he shifted gears to refer people or provide information on their reptile, although he still takes in some animals. His business, now a nonprofit, receives most of its funding from the live shows Jesse offers - often accompanied by Viola and her brother, Kenny, 12 - at local schools, churches, libraries and birthday parties. “We did 275 live shows this past year,” Jesse said.

More than three years ago, Jason and Katherine Horst, owners of Horst Arts in Manheim, were working out of their home when they came up with an idea. “We were watching ‘The Great British Baking Show’ and decided to try a similar craftbased version with us and our two young children,” Jason recalled. “It was a lot of fun, and we tried to figure out how to host a full-fledged event out of our home with friends.” Although that idea never came to fruition, just a few months later, the couple opened its business at 17 N. Main St., Manheim, and the location became the perfect venue to host The Great Create. The first event was held in January of 2020. The next Great Create will be held on Sunday, Jan. 22, at 3 p.m.

A Winter Safety Guide For Seniors

The colder months and their inclement weather can be dangerous for any Lancaster County resident, and navigating snowy and icy conditions without the proper caution may result in injury or worse. During this season, seniors in the community may be more at risk than other people; here are some tips to help keep you and your loved ones safe.

Avoid going outside until snow and ice are removed from walkways and parking lots, especially after it gets dark. Once the sun sets, even if a path has been cleared, refreezing is more likely to occur. If you do need to leave the house, making sure that you have a

pair of shoes with non-skid soles greatly decreases your chance of slipping on ice or wet pavement. Any footwear that provides significant traction will make a winter stroll much safer.

If you use a cane, ensure that it is equipped with a rubber tip that has been recently replaced and that has not been worn smooth. Even if a walkway is cleared, remain wary of rock salt that may have been applied to the ground; it could result in a loss of traction for those who use a walker as the wheels are more likely to skid on the substance.

“Slipping and falling on ice hazards is one of the biggest issues during the wintertime,” said Bobbi-Jo Casseday, vice

Tuesday, Jan. 24.

Classes are provided for children from infants to prekindergartners. Readers may contact Bonnie at 717361-2613 or Veronica at 717-626-7603 for more information and a copy of this year’s schedule.

As Jason explained, the event is an opportunity to indulge in creativity, get competitive and have fun. “This is

a two-hour event that includes three rounds of artand-craft-based competition,” he shared. “The first round is fairly simple and very crafty. The second challenge involves cut paper and is a bit more technical. The third challenge is more freeform and involves a canvas and collage.” Instructions and guidance are provided at the beginning of each challenge, and no artistic knowledge or experience is required to participate. “A winner is chosen for each round, and at the end, an overall winner is chosen and receives a prize,” Jason stated.

The most recent Great Create was held in March of 2022, when participants were sets of mothers and daughters who were all friends, Jason said. “When friends do this event together, there’s always more smack talk and that’s a lot of fun,” he remarked. “In fact, friendly ribbing is encouraged.”

He noted that artistic skill is not required to enjoy The Great Create. “This event is for people who watch reality television competitions and think it would be fun to experience a similar event in a fun setting,” he said. “While it is a competition, that’s actually secondary. It’s about enjoying a challenge with friends or making friends while exercising your creative muscles.”

Competitors get crafty at The Great Create.

Although both kids help with the shows, and Jesse’s wife, Kim, is a patient supporter of Jesse’s passion, it’s Viola who has really blossomed in the business, Jesse said.

“She shares my view on reptiles,” he stated. “Ever since I was little, if I saw a reptile, I wanted to get closer.”

By age 1, Viola was making television appearances with her dad, and he proudly shows off a video of Viola at about age 3, crying while Jesse records a large blood python. “She’s crying because I wouldn’t let her pet it,” he said.

Viola loves helping her father with reptile care (they

grow their own roaches and large mealworms for feeding their brood) and visiting the reptiles that live in the family’s basement.

“I really like to hold the animals,” Viola shared, noting that she also enjoys teaching others about the often-misunderstood creatures. “I like to tell people, ‘It’s OK. It’s not going to hurt you.’”

Jesse cautions that reptiles require respect when interacting with them and noted that he’s been bitten “thousands” of times, but that hasn’t dimmed his desire to help reptiles.

“Reptiles are magical and mysterious,” he said. “They’re quiet, but if you look into their eyes, there is a light on in the attic.”

Another important practice during the winter months is to ensure you are stocked with the necessary supplies in case you are unable to leave your home. A winter storm may also prevent meals and prescriptions from being delivered. Keep your kitchen stocked with enough food and water to last for at least one week and make sure you have nonperishable food that does not require cooking or refrigeration in the event that you lose power. Keeping your medicine cabinet full of needed prescriptions prior to a storm is also good practice; try to have prescriptions filled ahead of time if your area is expecting harsh weather.

Those who drive should stock their cars with basic emergency supplies for the winter. In case of emergency, a car should have a first aid kit,

blankets, warm winter clothing, a windshield scraper, a shovel and a flashlight.

Don’t forget to check on your neighbors, relatives and friends. Aside from the physical dangers of the winter, inclement weath-

er and limited travel can mean many seniors don’t receive as many visitors as usual. Practicing safety measures and checking in on others in the community can make this time of year safer for everyone.

Lady Baron Hoopsters Sit at 7-3 Overall

Thanks to the balmy weather currently hanging around Central Pennsylvania it may not feel like winter but rest assured, it is. That means the high school sports scene moves inside to gymnasiums, natatoriums, bowling alleys and gun ranges.

The Manheim Central girls’ basketball team has 10 games under their belts and despite opening 0-2, now sport a 7-3 record thanks to a six-game winning streak that stretched from December 8th to the 28th. Those wins came over Twin Valley (45-25), Hempfield (47-31), Elizabethtown (55-11), West Perry (54-30), Conestoga Valley (48-25) and York Suburban (47-46). That onepoint victory over York Suburban earned Central a spot in the title game of Suburban’s Holiday Tournament, but Greencastle-Antrim hoisted the trophy while snapping the winning streak with a 41-39 victory.

The Lady Barons returned to their winning ways on January 3rd, rolling by Garden

Spot 50-30. Maddie Knier netted a game high 19 while both Abbie Reed and Payton Snyder chipped in with eight points apiece.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

The boys are only nine games into their 2022-2023 slate, but those nine games have gone well with Manheim winning seven of them. The two losses came to Columbia and West York with the Columbia loss preventing the Barons from a title shot at the Mifflin County Holiday Tournament. Central did rebound from that Columbia loss, topping Mifflin County 64-43 in the consolation game.

Manheim Central kicked off their season with a title run at the Red Lion Tip-off where they topped Cedar Cliff, 58-54, and the host Lions by a more comfortable 73-56 final. Central shook off the loss to West York with wins over Elizabethtown (4544), Conestoga Valley (63-58) and York Suburban (64-48) while adding a 70-49 win over Garden Spot on January 3rd. Trey Grube posted a game high 26 in that win while Aaron Enterline (14

points) and Connor Fahnestock (12 points) provided the backup.

WRESTLING

The wrestling team has mixed in a few big tournaments throughout their early season dual meet schedule.

The results have the Barons at 3-1 in dual meets with December wins over Lebanon (64-9) and Lampeter-Strasburg (44-24) countering a loss to Spring Grove by a 46-18 final.

Central picked up their first win of 2023 on January 4th, topping Ephrata 36-27. The Barons opened with pinfall wins by Leo Bonanno (114), Braxton Keiffer (121) and Barret Keiffer (127) with a setback at 133 making it 18-6, a third of the way through the weight classes. Jake Hess added an old-fashioned decision at 139 before back-to-back Ephrata wins made it 21-15. A 19-3 tech fall win for Brett Barbush at 160 and a major decision win by Brodie Daugherty at 172 stretched Manheim’s lead to 30-15.

Ephrata wins at 189 and 215 added suspense to the match with a 30-27 score, but that quickly dissipated with Wyatt Kupres picking up the lone forfeit of the match at 285 to secure the 36-27 win.

In their big tournaments Manheim Central has been up & down with an 18th place finish at the season opening Cumberland Valley Kick-off Classic. They followed with mixed results at the Panther Holiday Classic held at Mount Aloysius College in Cresson, PA on December 16th and 17th and finished with a 3-2 mark in the Bob Rohm Duals. Central topped Central Columbia, Mifflinburg Area and Crestwood but fell to Lackawanna Trail HS and Huntingdon Area HS.

The rifle team stumbled out of the starting gate, dropping their opening match 497-496 to Garden Spot on December 13th. The Barons rebounded well from there, ripping off wins over Governor Mifflin (494-490), Elizabethtown (495-494) and Wilson (491-487) leaving

them in a three-way tie for first with Garden Spot and Ephrata.

BOWLING

The bowling team followed the same script, dropping their initial match of the season to Columbia on December 9th. From there the Barons have posted four straight

wins, topping Cocalico, Lampeter-Strasburg, Lancaster Catholic and ELCO by a combined 24-4 over the final weeks of December.

SWIMMING

The swimming season started slowly with just two meets completed for both the boys’ and girls’ teams. The

boys’ team managed to rebound from their 120-42 season opening loss to Hempfield with a 95-52 win over Penn Manor. Unfortunately, the Lady Barons were not as fortunate, following their 126-36 loss to Hempfield with a 112-38 loss to Penn Manor.

Alisa Sholly, who has participated in No Longer Alone Ministries family support group meetings for about a decade is grateful for the experience. “As the name says, I no longer feel alone in knowing how to deal with mental health concerns involving loved ones,” said Sholly. “I receive valuable information on mental health topics, a listening ear from others that can understand, and prayer.”

Michele Sipel, director of InHome Services with Landis at Home a division of Landis Communities, is well attuned with the mission of the support group, which meets monthly at Landis Homes. Sipel serves as a liaison for the group, which provides a safe place to open up for those who have a loved one living with mental illness. “It’s a different world, and unless you live it, you don’t know (what it’s like),” said Sipel. “It’s one of those subjects where there’s a lot of stigma, but it is so important.”

Meetings are held on the fourth Sunday of each month.

The next support group meeting will be held via Zoom on Sunday, Jan. 22, from 3 to 5 p.m. The January meeting will include a video by Dr. Matthew Stanford, PhD, followed by discussion.

The support group was an offshoot of No Longer Alone Ministries (NLAM), which functioned in Lancaster from 1991 to 2019. When NLAM closed its doors, a peer support group and the family support group overseen by the ministries were transferred to local entities. The peer support group, called Paths to Discovery, became part of Faith Friendship Ministries, and the family support group transferred to Landis, where several of the founding members live.

Landis offered personnel with the necessary expertise to help organize the group as well.

Sipel noted that Evon Bergey, vice president of community initiatives with Landis Homes,

is from a behavioral health background and added that she and other organizers work with Bob Musser, a licensed social worker who worked with NLAM, to plan meetings, line up speakers, and facilitate meetings. The group began meeting at Landis Homes in January of 2020. After the advent of COVID-19 restrictions, the group met virtually.

In 2023, January, February, and March meetings will be held via Zoom so that inclement weather will not be a deterrent. The group plans to meet virtually once each quarter so that those who cannot come to Landis Homes may attend.

Among the past topics that were covered at meetings are innovations in treatment, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder, overcoming grief, mental health and the Bible, and bringing healing to senior care.

Sipel said the group provides an atmosphere of caring and acceptance. “You get to know

Anti-littering Contest Posted For Youths

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful will sponsor the Litter Hawk Youth Award Program, a recognition program for students in kindergarten through grade six who complete a designated project specific to their grade level. Students can participate individually or as part of a lesson initiated by schools, homeschools, Scout troops, 4-H clubs, environmental clubs, or other organized groups.

The Litter Hawk Youth Award Program is a way for kids to share their hope, optimism, and concerns about litter and to inspire others to

care for their communities through art, words, or video.

In response to Pennsylvania’s new anti-littering education campaign, PA Fights Dirty: Every Litter Bit Matters, the theme is “Show Us How Every Litter Bit Matters to You.”

Projects include a poster for children in kindergarten through grade four and an essay or video for children in grades five and six. The deadline to participate is Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2023.

Two entries will be selected as winners in each grade level. The winner and the runner-up will receive a gift

card as a prize. All participants will receive certificates. Winners will be announced in April in time for Earth Day celebrations.

The Litter Hawk Youth Award Program was created with funding provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. For more information, downloadable promotional posters, and an online entry form, visit www.keeppabeautiful.org and select Awards under Grants & Awards. Sholly noted that NLAM has provided her with optimism. “It is a place to find hope when things seem hopeless,” she said. “I encourage anyone who is struggling or knows someone that is struggling with mental health issues to attend. It has been a Godsend for me and my family.”

To register for the January Zoom meeting, contact 717381-3599 or jalbright@ landis.org by noon on Friday, Jan. 20.

Christmas Tree Recycling Program

County residents may dispose of their Christmas trees in an environmentally friendly way by dropping them at the mulching site at Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster. Trees may be dropped off between dawn and dusk through Tuesday, Jan. 31.

The park mulching program is for Christmas trees only. No other yard waste will be accepted. Trees must be free of decorations, lights, plastic bags, and hardware, including nails in the trunk. There is a limit of three trees per vehicle. Commercial haulers are strongly advised to contact their local municipalities for their respective Christmas tree recycling locations.

There is a suggested nominal

donation for each tree. Donations will benefit the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. Trees from the nursery are utilized throughout the Lancaster County Park System. A portion of the funds are used to purchase emerald ash borer protection for about 26 ash trees in Lancaster County Central Park and Buchmiller County Park.

According to park officials, residents drop off about 1,000 Christmas trees each year, which produce 15 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas, and many deciduous ornamental trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic soil conditions. The mulch will be available to residents on a firstcome, first-served basis after

Jan. 4, near the tree drop-off site. Persons desiring free mulch should bring a pitchfork or shovel and a bag or a trailer to transport it home.

For more information about the Christmas tree mulching

program, call the park office at 717-299-8215 on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. To learn more about the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation, visit www. lancastercountyparks.org.

Art Shows Announced

The Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA), 149 Precision Ave, Strasburg, has announced two shows. LCAA will hold its “Winter Membership Show” with an opening reception on Sunday, Jan. 15, from 1 to 4 p.m.

In the Steinmetz Gallery, works by award-wining artist Richard Chandler Hoff will be featured. Hoff is a nationally recognized artist working exclusively in graphite pencil on paper. He

illustrates life in America during the 1940s, relying on extensive research to accurately depict that decade.

The shows will run from Jan. 15 through Thursday, Feb. 16. The galleries will be open on Thursdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m.

Admission is free. For additional information, visit www.lcaaonline.org or call 717-687-7061.
