Manheim Central Will Present “Anne Of Green Gables” BY CATHY MOLITORIS

classic book will come to life when “Anne of Green Gables” is performed by Manheim Central High School students. The show will run on Friday, Jan. 14, and Saturday, Jan. 15, at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, Jan. 16, at 2 p.m. Due to ongoing construction at the high

A

school, the play will be performed at Manheim Central Middle School, 261 White Oak Road. “This is a classic coming-of-age story,” said Audrey Cressler, a senior who portrays the title character. “Audiences can expect some sad tears and some comical tears because there are situations in the play where the characters are upset about things

that are really more funny than sad.” Senior Alec Achen said “Anne of Green Gables” is a family-friendly show that will appeal to a wide audience. “It’s about a girl who is adopted by two people who are looking for help around their farm,” said Alec, who portrays Matthew, one of Anne’s guardians. “They are surprised by who they get when Anne shows up.” Although Anne may be a surprise to her new guardians, she wins them over with her charm. “She’s a very precocious child,” Audrey stated. “She reminds me of how I was when I was little. She loves to read, and she never stops talking. She’s curious.”

“Anne of Green Gables” is a family-friendly show that will appeal to a wide audience.

The cast of “Anne of Green Gables” includes (from left) Maddie Kreider, Alec Achen, Audrey Cressler and Zoe Faulkner.

Playing a character that hits close to home is a fun challenge, she noted. “It forces you to be truthful with yourself,” Audrey said. “Anne can be a little annoying, especially when she talks a lot, and I realized that’s not something I like to admit about myself.” Alec noted that “Anne of Green Gables” showcases what it means to love someone, even if that person is different than you. “The character of Anne is lovable,” he stated. “This is a show about family. It’s about accepting your family for who they are. Ultimately, it’s a show about community.” The show features a cast of 33 students with a crew of eight. Connecting Communities BY CATHY MOLITORIS

The people at Pleasant View Communities believe in “community without walls,” and a new grant will now make that goal even more attainable. Pleasant View received a $100,000 Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program grant to support the construction of recreational amenities on the new Pleasant View campus

in Penn Township. The grant will fund a 5-foot-wide walking trail along the perimeter of the Hoffer Farm property across North Penryn Road from the main Pleasant View campus, as well as two proposed tennis courts. To continue its commitment to the greater community, Pleasant View will offer the amenities to its 400-plus residents as well as local community members. See Communities pg 2

Over lunch and recess at elementary schools in the School District of Lancaster, students are learning about Jesus. Some are being introduced to the Bible for the first time, and it’s all thanks to Bible2School, a Manheim-based organization that offers free classes during the school day to second-, third- and fourthgraders in schools around Lancaster County. The interest in classes has grown so quickly, the organization is seeking additional volunteers. See Bible2School pg 5

Future phases of the expansion will also include the connection of the walking trail to downtown Manheim through a sidewalk network that will provide a safe transit option for community members. Gaissert said he hopes the Pleasant View expansion can serve as a model for communities outside of this region. “The Hoffer Farm will have something for everyone, and all will be welcome,” he remarked. “We believe this project will open eyes around the country and show that retirement communities can also be cultural pillars.” For more information on Pleasant View Communities, visit www.pleasantview communities.org.

Bible2School from pg 1 attend the program, they often influence their families to consider church as parents begin to see the value in what is being taught, she said. Classes are kept small, with a ratio of six children to each adult. “We meet as a large group, but then we break into smaller groups where they can really dig into the lesson and the kids can ask questions,” Smith remarked. “That’s where the great

conversations happen. Bible2School is about developing trusting relationships with the kids.” Due to the popularity of the classes and the intentional class size, there is currently a waiting list of more than 40 students in School District of Lancaster. “We’d love to serve more students, but we need more volunteers,” Smith stated, noting that students often return to

class sharing stories of the lessons and activities and inspiring their classmates to sign up. “You don’t need any experience with teaching to volunteer with us. We will give you the tools and resources you need to succeed.” For more information on Bible2School, visit www. bible2school.com or call Carol School District of Lancaster students enjoy a Bible2School Rabold at 717-615-2944. class.

“Staff and volunteers teach a Bible lesson once a week,” explained Stephanie Smith, director of operations for Bible2School. “We also include science experiments, skits, crafts and games. It’s very interactive.” Classes are held off-site from the school, often within walking distance, and children enjoy their lunch while the program gets underway. No taxpayer money is used to the fund the classes, and all students must have parental or guardian permission to attend. Bible2School began in 1979 in Manheim and has expanded to more than 30 schools throughout the county and the state. For 12 years, the organization has been offering classes in the School District of Lancaster. “We focus on second-, third- and fourth-graders, because this is a time when kids start asking really good questions like, ‘Who created me? What happens after I die? Why am I here?’ And we can provide a biblical answer to those questions,” Smith stated. “This is also the time when kids are developing morals and values. We’re teaching them to love God and to love their neighbor.” Bible2School also gives students a chance to learn about the Bible, she noted, adding, “This year, a record 57% of our students are not regularly connected with a church.” As children

BOYS’ BASKETBALL Behind a game-high 28 points by Trey Grube, Manheim cruised to a 6343 victory over Solanco last Wednesday. It was the second time the Barons beat the Mules this season, the first coming during Solanco’s Holiday Tournament in a 54-39 triumph in the championship game. Grube had 25 in the first meeting and garnered tournament MVP honors. Connor Fahnestock added nine points and Judd Novak and Zach Benner each had seven. Central was down five early in the first match up and went on an 8-0 run in the second to take a 27-17 halftime lead and led 33-25 after three quarters. The Barons led by as many as 15 in the fourth, finally figuring out the Mules’ zone. Novak controlled the game at point guard and Grube hit “a huge 3 to kick start things,” Barons’ coach Charlie Fisher said. Since starting the season 0-2, the Barons have been on a roll, winning six in a row. “Night in and night out it has been our defense,” said Fisher, who is going about nine deep. “Sometimes we try to think about scoring too much. ...They own their roles and understand it.” BOWLING Landen Statts led the way with a three-game 556 to pace the Barons to a 2592-1971 victory over Lancaster Mennonite on Jan. 3. Jesse Hurst rolled a 549, including a first-game score of 255. Ethan Howard had a 514. Hailey Kowalski and Holly Hunt posted a 494 and 479, respectively. Worth noting, Josh Shaw, a JV bowler, posted the third highest score with a 534. Overall, Central bowled fairly consistently and did well covering most of their spares, Barons’ coach Alan Slides said.

Statts, a sophomore, has the high average on the team with a 181.7, followed by Hunt, a junior at 180.1. Howard, a sophomore, averages a 179 and had a personal-best 670 triple against Elizabethtown. Hunt and Kowalski average a 158.9 and 153, respectively. “I think, overall, we are improving and basically we are returning the same players next season, so it is nice to see us progressing,” Slides said. “From last year to this year they have improved. My assistant coach, Todd Steffy, has helped make adjustments in positions and correcting their flaws. The kids are really listening to his coaching and making improvements.” GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The Lady Barons (5-2 overall) defeated Solanco 55-30 on Jan. 5. Maddie Knier had a game-high 28 points and Abbie Reed chipped in 20. “We’re playing well,” Central coach Tyson Hayes said. “We’re buying into our roles on the team. It is the best I’ve seen with players playing well

together.” Hayes returns everyone from last year and has added a few new weapons, giving the Barons plenty of depth. Knier, who averages about 22 points a game, is the team leader with her outstanding play and is starting to get serious looks from colleges, Hayes said. He said she will be a coaches dream for whoever she plays for in college. “I just encourage everyone to watch her play and see how she plays hard all the time,” he said. “Any boy or girl could look up to her and want to play like that.” Now Hayes said his staff is working to develop her inside and outside game for the next level. Reed, the point guard, is developing into a solid player, Hayes said. She is a floor general and one of the top on-the-ball defenders, guarding the other team’s best scorer most nights. Rachel Nolt, who averages about 14 points, is a senior leader and is making basketball plays that Hayes has not seen from her previously.

ABC Keystone Adds Program The Keystone Chapter of Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC) has added Assembler, Pre-Engineered Buildings to its selection of Pennsylvania-registered apprenticeship programs. ABC Keystone worked with the Metal Building Institute to construct the program, which was approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry and accepted by the State Apprenticeship Council in September 2021. The two-year apprenticeship program will be facilitated by the Keystone

Apprenticeship Trust. Classes are scheduled to start in the fall of 2022, with the first graduating class receiving its completion certificates in 2024. The program will provide education and training to fulfill the demand for pre-engineered building assemblers, who construct commercial metal structures using prefabricated framing and siding elements while utilizing skills and training in sheet metal working, ironworking, blueprint reading, structural design principles and safety.

Prefabricated metal commercial buildings are widely utilized throughout the construction industry. This form of construction has been in use for over 40 years. ABC Keystone educates individuals through Pennsylvania-registered apprenticeship programs in various trades. The earn-while-youlearn education programs allow participants to both work and attend classes. For more information, contact cindyd@abckeystone.org or visit www.abckeystone .org/apprenticeship.
