In October each year, people start calling the office at Trinity Lutheran Church, 47 W. Main St., Mount Joy, to ask about the annual clothing giveaway the church holds in January. “People are already checking in then to see if we’re doing it again, shared Elayne Olson, who serves as the office and outreach coordinator at the church. Calls come in from people interested in donating and from people wanting to mark their calendars to attend. “It’s something people really look forward to, Olson said. See Giveaway pg 4 The

We love the fact that we are embedded here in Manheim, but we serve students from all over.” MCDS began in 1952 and offers a Christian education for children from prekindergarten age through eighth grade. In addition to Manheim, Knecht noted that students attend from Elizabethtown, Landisville, Lebanon, Lititz, Mount Joy, and beyond. Currently, approximately 200 students are enrolled at the school, which has 30 faculty and staff members. “We truly do believe that this is a family atmosphere,” Knecht

Our foundation is Christianity and without the promise of eternity, it doesn’t matter how good your academics are.” Enrollment for the 2020-21 school year at MCDS opens in February. On the day of the event, members of the Elizabethtown Area High School football team volunteer their time by coming in to the library to remove extra furniture and rearrange things as needed turning what could be a long, labor-intensive undertaking into a quick project. “They’re the unsung heroes, because they’re not here on the night of the event, but they really help to make it all possible,” Phillips remarked. knots made from strong thread. The comforters are finished by binding the edges, and they measure 60 inches by 80 inches, large enough for a twin-size bed. A sewing factory in the Ephrata area closed a few years ago and donated a wealth of unused material to the sewing circle. Volunteers cut the fabric into squares, which Weaver organizes into groups for quilt tops. Weaver’s mother, Ruth Bruckhart, sews the tops, and then Weaver assembles the comforters. Erma Martin finishes the binding. Weaver noted that she does a lot of the work at home because her responsibilities at her family’s greenhouse business often prevent her from attending sewing circle meetings. “We do this on the offseason,” Weaver remarked. “Our vocation
doesn’t allow vacations, so I do staycations at home. I tie comforters in our basement. It’s so therapeutic. I just love it.” Bruckhart is 82 years old and a prolific sewist. In 2019, she sewed an all-time high of 343 quilt tops for the sewing circles at Hammer Creek and Hernley Mennonite Church. “It’s a special outlet for her,” Weaver remarked. When Weaver learned about the opening of Providence Shelter and saw pictures of the whitesheeted cots, she felt compelled to contact Water Street Mission. The sewing circle prefers to send dark-colored comforters to MCC relief efforts because they tend not to show dirt. That left an assortment of lighter-colored comforters that had not yet found a home. “We thought it would be good (for them) to go
to a place with a washer and dryer,” Weaver said. In all, the group had 77 comforters available, so Martin and Weaver delivered them to Providence Shelter. As an additional service, they asked to make the beds. “For Erma and me to go in there, it was so rewarding,” Weaver said, noting that seeing the comforters put to use was one of the highlights of her life. She added that the shelter, which was created in a renovated warehouse on the Water Street Mission campus, is clean and inviting. “We created Providence Shelter so those experiencing homelessness can feel God’s protective care in their lives,” said mission president Jack Crowley. “ We want guests to see how God has seen ahead to their time of need
and actually used the generosity of our community and partners to prepare Water Street for their arrival, providing more than beds and a place to sleep, but an environment that reflects our spiritual need for love and dignity ... a space that can reinspire hope in the hopeless.” Content developer Che Jimenez noted that the mission had estimated it would spend $3,000 on bedding for the shelter. “The quilts saved us all that money as well as added a personal touch to our beds,” he said. “Right now, we are still accepting twin bed sheets that we need on an ongoing basis.” Readers are welcome to visit https://wsm.org/make-an -impact/donate-goods/ to learn how they can contribute to Providence Shelter.
Giveaway from pg 1 This year, the church will host its 12th annual clothing giveaway and community meal on Saturday, Jan. 25. All are welcome. Doors will open promptly at 9 a.m., and the giveaway will continue until 12:30 p.m. The fellowship committee will begin serving a free community meal at approximately 10:30 a.m., and the food will be available until noon or while supplies last. Takeout meals will also be an option. Anyone in need of clothing is invited to attend the giveaway. There are no qualifications to participate and no limit to the number of clothing items attendees may take home. Organizers simply ask that participants be respectful and considerate of others in attendance. Clothing in most sizes, from newborn through adult, will be available for attendees to choose from, as well as shoes, coats, and accessories. Volunteers wearing shirts that say “Live Generously” will be stationed throughout the church to offer direction and assistance. “Every year we wonder if we will have enough clothing to give
away, but we always do,” remarked Olson. Donations of gently used clothing for people of all ages, as well as shoes and accessories, may be dropped off at the church between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays, with additional drop-off hours between 6 and 8 p.m. on Wednesdays. Items should be packed in bags marked by gender and size and placed in the large storage POD in the church parking lot. The last day to drop off donations will be Sunday, Jan. 19. Olson noted that the clothing giveaway and community meal are a way not only to fulfill the call to serve and take care of others, but to put into practice the concept of reduce, reuse, and recycle. Members of the congregation support the event by donating clothing and baked goods, sorting and organizing clothing in preparation, and volunteering on the day of the event. In past years, approximately 350 people have attended. “We all pull together to help our brothers and sisters in Christ,” Olson stated. For more information, readers may call 717-653-4168.

This year’s sculpture depicted three of Pennsylvania’s professional sports mascots - the Philadelphia Flyers’ Gritty, the Philadelphia Eagles’ Swoop, and the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Steely McBeam - celebrating with a spread of Pennsylvania dairy products. On Jan. 4, Gov. Tom Wolf and Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding kicked off the 2020 Pennsylvania Farm Show, inviting the show’s thousands of competitive exhibitors and nearly half a million visitors to embrace the 2020 theme, “Imagine the Opportunities.” Throughout the eight-day event, attendees had the chance to explore the breadth of Pennsylvania agriculture, its heritage, and the innovation driving its future. The ceremony began with a Pennsylvania State Police ceremonial color guard and the singing of the national anthem by the Greater Harrisburg Chorus’ Sweet Adelines, winners of the 2020 Pennsylvania Farm Show Oh Say, Can You Sing? contest. smaller courts, lower nets, appropriately sized racquets, low-compression larger size tennis balls and balls that jingle for the visually impaired. The United States Tennis Association (USTA) Net Generation Curriculum will be incorporated into the program. Linden Hall has a connection with supporting adaptive tennis programs. Former Linden Hall tennis coach Winnie Gilliford, who passed away in 2001, was a pioneer in teaching individuals with disabilities. Gilliford was
born with congenital back problems and her involvement with tennis began as a therapeutic measure. She earned a Middle States ranking and the Middle States Presidential Service Award, and she wrote a book, “Winnie’s Wisdom, Great Tennis Truths From an ‘Old’ Pro.” Throughout her coaching years, she taught individuals with abilities of all levels, including wheelchair tennis instruction in the 1980s. Sessions will be limited to 15 participants from ages 8 to 18.
A grant from the USTA Middle States Region was instrumental in developing adaptive tennis at Linden Hall. The program cost includes six one-hour sessions. Financial need-based scholarships are also available. Linden Hall tennis coaches will lead the instruction along with volunteers from the girls’ tennis team and the community. The Barons then held on for The week started off slow - no 44-38 victory Saturday, at Fleetwood, games until Friday - for the Barons’ pushing Manheim’s win total to girls’ basketball team, but they shook double digits. off the dust and pulled out two wins “It has been amazing and fun watching these girls practice and play,” Barons’ coach Tyson Hayes said. “They play with an amazing amount of joy for each other.” Against Garden Spot, the Barons started slow, trailing 9-6 after the first quarter. They were paced by Rachel Nolt’s six points and Maddy Knier, who had 12 of the Barons’ 18 first-half points, including eight in the second quarter. Central tried to get out and run. Play a faster-pace game than the Spartans, but the long layoff hurt, Hayes said. Tied at 18-18 at halftime, Manheim slowly pulled away, outscoring the Spartans 10-4 in the third quarter. Laura Good, who uses her size and ball handling to create mismatches for defenses, notched five points in the third, highlighted by getting a defensive rebound and driving the length of the court for a layup, giving Central a 23-18 lead. She later drove baseline for a hoop and converted a foul shot to extend the Barons’ lead to 28-22 at the end of three quarters. In the fourth, Manheim spread the court and looked to drive to the hoop Photo by Vinny Tennis or get fouled, propelling its lead to as Laura Good fires a pass into the corner during the Barons’ 39-27, in two days. Making the victories more impressive is what the win total means for the program. The 39-27 triumph Friday, Jan. 10 in New Holland against Garden Spot meant the team more
many as 13 points. “Just staying patient. Just staying focused,” Hayes said. “It wasn’t the best that we could play, but winning a section game is all that matters. I’d rather take a sloppy game and win than a really good game and lose.” Knier, a freshman, finished with 19 points. Nolt and Good each added eight points. Manheim used a 2-3 zone to stymie the Spartans’ offense. This showed the Barons’ defensive versatility. A week earlier they used manto-man defense to take away the 3point shot for Lampeter-Strasburg. “We did a really nice job matching up with that zone,” Hayes said. “They (the Barons) did a really good job buying into the scouting report. It is all a credit to them being focused and working on it in practice and not letting our offense effect what we do on the defensive end. If we don’t have a good offensive night, that’s okay. It is not okay when we don’t have a good defensive performance.” The shots were falling less than 24 hours later, as Manheim jumped out to a 23-10 halftime lead against Fleetwood, which rallied in the second half to make things close at the end. Fleetwood outscored Central 15-13 in the third and 13-8 in the fourth, as the Barons are learning how to close out games. Knier had a team-high 23 points, including two 3-pointers. Good added

nine points. “We wanted a fast start and to control the glass,” Hayes said. “We did a tremendous job bringing consistent energy and effort for 32 minutes.” RIFLE The Barons remain undefeated, picking up two quality wins last week. Manheim defeated Wilson 496 to 483 Friday, Jan. 10. Senior Hunter Shoop and sophomore Anna Haldeman fired off the kind of scores head coach Steve Waddington has been looking for most of the season. Both Barons were on target for 100 scores, a rare mark this season for the Barons. Senior Gage McCabe and sophomore Kami Groff were right behind the leaders, each posting 99. Junior Abigail Martin shot a 98. On Thursday, Jan. 9 the Barons beat Conestoga Valley 495 to 486, showing their depth in the process. The top six shooters (top five scores count for final score) all shot 99. Waddington was pleased with the win, but knows his team must start scoring 100s. “The depth was good,” he said. “It is a consistent score, but a score that can be beat. I can’t say I am surprised by any of these performances. They are all good shooters. Hunter (Schoop) was just out and just missed 100.” McCabe, Shoop, Brayden Groff, Ellie McCabe and Kami Groff had their 99s count for the team score. Haldeman was the sixth 99, but hers did not count. She shot just as well as the top five Waddington said. The coach said his team must keep their team average as high as possible, in case there is a tie-breaker for the league title. “We’ve been very fortunate to make it through the first half of the season with no losses,” he said. “We have just stayed steady.” SWIMMING Heather Fittery was pleased with

how her squad swam Jan. 9 against Ephrata, but having only 10 boy swimmers and 10 girl swimmers makes it difficult to fill lanes and win meets. The girls lost 123-37 and the boys lost 132-31. “The team swam well,” Fittery said. “They improved times in many events.” Within the meet, there were some strong individual performances. Olivia Faulhaber won the 50 free with a time of 27.64. She also swam her best 100 free time at 100.69. On the boys’ side, Finn Schmidhuber, a junior, and Luke Weaver, a senior, both swam best times in the 100 breaststroke at 1:16.52 and 1:16.83, respectively. WRESTLING Manheim defeated Elizabethtown 64-12 on Wednesday, Jan. 8. After losing the first match of the night, the Barons rolled off eight straight wins. Reese Martin started the Barons’ scoring with a fall at 195 pounds. Then Brett Barbush gained at pin in a mere 19 seconds at 285, followed by Braxton Keiffer’s fall at 106 in just 48 seconds. Brandon Kheuangthirath, a senior, earned a major decision, 12-1, at 120. Uriah Warner (126) won 11-6. Will Betancourt and Bryce Dombach each earned falls at 132 and 138, respectively. Conner Zeamer rounded out the eight straight wins with an 8-5 decision at 145. William Bemesderfer added a pin at 160. Bemesderfer, a first-year starter, was only up two points. He pushed the pace, Chamberlain said, and took his guy down and was able to get a pin. “It is nice to see him have success,” Chamberlain said. “He has put in the time and is getting the rewards of his work in the sport.” The Barons also got two forfeit

MERCHANDISER - Manheim Central Edition At the Gettysburg Duals Saturday, Jan. 11 Manheim went 1-4 as a team. Betancourt went 5-0. Zeamer was 4-1 and Fittery was 3-2. BOWLING Manheim rolled easily past Columbia 7-0 Wednesday, Jan. 8. The Barons won the first game 930 to 769, the second 825 to 792 and the third game 880 to 772 for a total score of 2,635 to 2,333. Brandon Henry paced the Barons with a 623 total behind game scores of 244-152-227. What happened in that second game? “He kind wasn’t hitting his marks in the lane and wasn’t consistent,” Barons’ coach Alan Sides said. “But in the third game he went back to what he was doing well in the first game.” Manheim’s lead off bowler Joey Noble, a senior, posted a 583 to get
the Barons off to a strong start. He had games of 192-186-205. Sides said Noble was hitting his spares. Austin Howard had a 220 second game. A few other notable scores: Josh Shaw, a sophomore on the junior varsity, had a 189 game. It is the best game he’s ever had. John Greenwald, a senior who bowled some matches on varsity last year, rolled a 193, also his biggest game ever. He has one of the top three averages on the junior varsity, which says a lot about the Barons’ depth. Catey Sides, a junior and the coach’s daughter, rolled a 499. “I feel we should be bowling as well as we did in the first game (930), but sometimes you bowl to
your competition,” said Sides, whose team has a 5-3 record. “When there is tougher competition the team seems to step up.” BOYS’ BASKETBALL Down 18-9 early in the game and trailing by four at halftime, Manheim played a great second half and pulled away for a 57-47 victory against Garden Spot Friday, Jan. 10 in Manheim. “Judd Novak was phenomenal,” coach Charlie Fisher said. “Garden Spot has this tall kid who is a good player and we shut him down. Cam Eberly also covered the big guy.” Garden Spot has two players that are 6-foot-4 and 6-3 and are good from the perimeter. Manheim defended them with Novak at 5-9 and Eberly,

LM Holds Senior Service Day On Oct. 16, 2019, seniors from Lancaster Mennonite School (LM) visited a number local nonprofits to volunteer for their annual Senior Service Day. CAP (Community Action Partnership), Friendship Community, Material Resource Center, Black Rock Retreat, Eastern Mennonite Missions, Blessings of Hope, Landis Homes, Parkesburg POINT, Woodcrest Retreat, The Factory Ministries, and Brethren Village were all destinations for this year’s Service Day. With the guidance of LM faculty, and despite the rainy weather, seniors built a shed and deep-cleaned Head Start classrooms at CAP, repaired a bridge and split firewood at Black Rock Retreat, sorted
donated food for families at Blessings of Hope, tutored students at Parkesburg POINT, split wood at Woodcrest Retreat, sang and talked with residents at Landis Homes, and performed various other service projects throughout Lancaster County. Senior Service Day began eight years ago at the initiative of a couple of students who requested that seniors be given the opportunity to have a special day of giving back to the community. Each year, on the same day that the juniors are taking their PSAT tests, the seniors go into the community for a day of service. They also commit up to $500 from their senior fundraisers to help with transportation, as needed.
Approximately 150 people from across Lancaster County attended the ninth annual Pursenalities Party on Nov. 6, 2019, at the Eden Resort in Lancaster. The event raised $7,800 for the American Heart Association, a voluntary organization focused on heart and brain health for all, and the Go Red for Women movement. More than 60 designer purses donated by local individuals and businesses were up for bids in a silent auction while guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres. Each purse was displayed with information about the “pursenality” who donated the bag. Proceeds from the event will
support the Go Red for Women campaign and the donation of Infant CPR Anytime kits and other resources to Lancaster County hospitals. The event served as a kick-off to the American Heart Association’s annual Go Red for Women campaign, which will include the celebration of National Wear Red Day on Friday, Feb. 7, and the Lancaster Go Red for Women Luncheon on Thursday, April 30, at Rock Lititz Pod 2. The Pursenalities Party was chaired by Taylor Rotay. For more information, readers may contact Bill Coder at 717-730-1736 or bill.coder@heart.org.

Trey Grube hit a 3-pointer to give Central a 36-34 lead. “Here’s the biggest thing, the guys were, for the most part, never in trouble when we were down,” Fisher said. “The last couple of games we were winning and coughed it up. He had four 3-pointers including three in the second half. The Barons hit eight 3-pointers in the game. The Barons beat Red Land 60-30 Saturday, Jan. 11 in Manheim in the LL-Mid Penn Showdown. JD Grube led the team with nine points.

Despite losing, Chamberlain said competing on back-to-back days helps prepare his wrestlers with multiple weigh-ins and the postseason. Barbush, a freshman, won 9-5 decision at 220 pounds. Ryland Fittery, a sophomore, earned an 8-6 triumph at 285 pounds. Beck, a freshman, pulled out a 7-6 decision at 113 pounds. Betancourt, a senior, continued his dominance at 132 with a pin at 1:16. This quarterly series focuses on best practices for trauma-informed care, particularly the safe application of experiential therapies, including psychodrama, sociometry, Family Constellations, art making, and meditation. “Creating Safety and Connection: The Basics of Trauma-Informed Care” will be offered on Friday, Jan. 31 (with a snow date of Friday, Feb. 7). “Creating Body Awareness: The Body Remembers What the Mind Forgets” will be presented on Friday, April 17. “Creating the Bigger Picture: Addressing and Healing Ancestral Trauma” will be offered on Friday, July 17, and “Creating Possibilities: Post-Traumatic Growth as a
Reality” will be presented on Friday, Oct. 23. According to Karen Carnabucci, the school’s founder and one of the instructors of the series, trauma-informed care is an approach that acknowledges the effects of trauma, recognizes the impact of trauma on behavior, and responds in a manner that is supportive, encouraging, and empowering. Participants will learn how trauma-informed care is different than trauma treatment; a strength-based action-oriented model, adapted for a high level of safety and containment on multiple levels; how to deal with the reluctant or resistant client; how trauma-informed care supports relapse prevention with addictions and eating disorders; how to safely incorporate experiential activities and creative arts therapies in trauma-informed care; and self-care as a route to nourish the professional and provide deeper

The field of senior care offers employment opportunities for people with a variety of skills and talents. The senior care industry includes many different positions that are vital to ensuring that senior living communities provide the best possible care for residents as they age. Representatives from the industry note that working in the field of senior care can be a rewarding career choice for individuals with a passion for helping the senior population. “One of the many perks (of working in senior care) is having the opportunity to be part of something bigger and having the opportunity each and every day to affect people’s lives in a positive way,” explained Kim Focht, director of human resources at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community (QPRC), 625 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville. “Our residents are our primary focus,” noted Kelly Miller, director of sales and marketing at Heatherwood Senior Living Community, 3180 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook. “This is their home, and they should be made to feel important and well cared for. Patience and understanding are key. Caring about how well our residents are treated is our main focus.” For Alicia Erdman, sales director for Legend Senior Living of Lititz, 80 W. Millport Road, something she enjoys about working in the senior care industry is the “satisfaction of knowing you were able to help a family and they no longer have to worry about their loved one’s overall safety.” Nurses are in high demand to fill various roles within senior care. Retirement communities offer positions for Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), Registered Nurses (RNs), and Registered Nursing Assessment Coordinators. A license is required to work as an RN or LPN. A certification is needed to serve as a CNA, but some senior care employers will help staff members obtain the certification. “We (at QPRC) do provide this education as well as pay our staff to get the education,” noted Focht.
