In 2021, Kelly Harnish founded Hope Served, a Manheim-based organization with a mission of serving people with disabilities. Her vision has led to an expansion of the nonprofit, including additional staff and a new space that will soon become a community hub.
“This past year especially has been exciting,” Harnish said. “We have been able to build a solid foundation. It’s been really neat to connect with individuals in our community affected by disabilities.”
One of the initiatives of Hope Served is the Individuals and Families Advisory Council (iFAC). This group meets regularly to talk about strengths of and challenges facing people with disabilities and to discuss how to best serve people with disabilities in the Manheim community. The next iFAC meeting is
scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 19, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Manheim BIC Church, 54 N. Penryn Road.
With a focus on older teens and adults who have aged out of school supports, Hope Served has identified three main challenges: helping people with disabilities feel like they’re part of the community, providing access and information about job opportunities and seeking out options for housing.
To help achieve her goals, Harnish hired Wendy Johnson as chief operating officer in November. Under Johnson’s direction, Hope Served plans to launch a capital campaign in the spring, and Johnson has been actively seeking out community members to introduce them to Hope Served and its mission.
Hope Served has entered in an agreement with Community Church of Manheim and has an office in the building at 201 W. High St. The
organization’s goal is to create a community space where people of all abilities can come and connect with one another. Within a few months, Hope Served plans to expand within the building, with the goal of constructing an addition in the next year. “We want this to be for everyone,” Johnson said. “It’s not just for people with disabilities. It’s going to be a safe place, a place where everyone belongs.”
W hile the new location will help with two of the organization’s goals - creating a sense of community and offering job skills workshops and other opportunities for enrichment - Hope Served also plans to create housing options for people with disabilities. Last spring, the organization was the runner-up in a Lancaster County Land Bank Authority grant program and hoped to convert a firehouse in Manheim into ADA-compliant apartments, with a
business on the first floor to employ people with disabilities. “Although the Land Bank awarded the project to another entity, they were very pleased with what we had brought to them,” Harnish stated. “They said they would support us in future efforts as we’re searching for grants and funding.”
As the mother of several children with disabilities, Harnish is optimistic about what Hope Served can do for Manheim. “I’m excited to see what the future holds,” she remarked. “As individuals who are affected by a disability become more integrated into the community, the community is going to be gobsmacked by the level of skill that is brought here and the untapped potential.”
For more information on Hope Served, email Johnson at wendy@hopeserved.org or call 717-347-9785.

It’s been a busy year for Anna Haldeman. The former Manheim Farm Show queen was crowned the Pennsylvania fair queen in January of 2022, and she will wrap up her year of service later this month.
“I have had a wonderful year,” Haldeman shared. “I enjoyed having the opportunity to visit so many fairs and meet so many people. Sharing my story and the adventures of my travels is very sweet.”
During the year, Haldeman traveled extensively throughout the state, promoting fairs as a showcase of agriculture and tourism and helping to build public understanding and awareness of the importance of fairs. “During the fair season, which is about June to October, I traveled regularly about once a week,” she said. “During peak season I would sometimes have five fairs a week to visit. I traveled over 6,000 miles and visited 23 fairs and a dozen other community and state-level events.”

When asked to pick some of her favorite memories of the past year, Haldeman said it’s hard to choose just a few.
“To say the whole year has been great would be very vague, but that is why fairs are so special,” she stated.
“Each fair has a piece that makes them unique and special, but there is a sense of familiarity when walking around the grounds because of the community that has been created.”
Still, she acknowledges that while the familiarity came at each fair, going to new places forced her a bit out of her comfort zone. “The most challenging part of being state fair queen is not always knowing what you are walking into,” she commented. “Most fairs were brand new to me, so there were a lot of unknowns.” Some of her duties as queen included participating in a celebrity dairy showmanship contest at the Oley Valley Community Fairwhich she won - and presenting ribbons to winners of the 2023 Pennsylvania Farm Show apple pie contest.
Haldeman said the past year opened her eyes to everything that goes into
staging a successful fair, noting, “I have a renewed appreciation for the hard-working individuals at fairs because I have seen so much of the behind-the-scenes action that is put into the fair weeks.”
Although being state fair queen was a full-time job, Haldeman also worked part time this past year for PR Builders in Lititz. After she relinquishes her title, she plans to continue her education at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, where she is studying business administration.
She will crown the 2023 Pennsylvania fair queen on Sunday, Jan. 22, in Hershey, and although she will no longer hold the title, she wants to keep promoting agriculture any way she can.
“Agriculture is important to Pennsylvania because it is our No. 1 industry,” she said. “It continues to provide hundreds of thousands of jobs for the state and bring in billions of dollars in revenue. It is important to care about agriculture because it affects every single person. We would not be fed or clothed if it were not for the hard-working farmers in Pennsylvania.”

Concert To Combine Music, Art, Technology
Millersville University’s Tell School of Music faculty will open the 2023 academic year with “Creatures: Some Mythical - Visual Meets Sonic Art” on Thursday, Jan. 19. The concert will take place at 7 p.m. in the Owen Salon at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster.
“Creatures: Some MythicalVisual Meets Sonic Art” is a work created by adjunct professor Rusty Banks, composer and guitarist; Dan Zdilla, collage artist; and Andy Babin, projections designer. Banks conceived the work as an instrumental piece for classical guitar and surround sound electronics. Each movement depicts a real or imaginary creature ever-present in Banks’ childhood conscience, such as the firefly, hellbender and doodle bug.
After viewing an exhibit of Zdilla’s collages in a local gallery, Banks approached him about creating works based on the creatures. The results are six works made entirely from pieces cut from
copies of National Geographic Magazine. Zdilla deconstructed the original found imagery into scraps and bits of formal elements such as color, value and texture and then reassembled these elements into new images.
Babin, with tech support from 4-Wall Entertainment, created animations to be projected behind the performer using high-resolution scans of Zdilla’s works. The overall effect is like walking into the collages and exploring the landscape within. The music ranges from ambient to experimental to lyrical, with the sounds of the classical guitar sometimes altered and moving throughout the space, such as from the front of the audience to the back of the room.
Banks was born in Jasper, Ala., and lives in Lancaster. His compositions have been performed in Asia, Europe, Canada and Mexico, as well as throughout the U.S. Besides writing concert music for bal-

Maintaining a healthy weight is believed to promote long-term health, while being overweight or obese can be a risk factor for various conditions, including Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The World Health Organization reports that the worldwide obesity rate has tripled since 1975. In 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults were overweight. Of these,
more than 650 million were obese.
Health issues related to obesity are largely preventable. Losing weight in a healthy manner is essential f or safe and lasting results, and individuals aspiring to lose weight may consider the following guidelines on what to do and what not to do.
DO add lean protein sources to your diet. Health-
line indicates the body burns calories when digesting and metabolizing protein, so a high-protein diet can help to
shed up to 80 to 100 calories per day. Protein also helps you to feel full, reducing the propensity to overeat.

DON’T get hung up on numbers early on. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises that even modest weight loss of 5% to 10% of your total body weight can produce health benefits, such as improvements in blood sugar levels, cholesterol and blood pressure. Start small and gradually build up.
DO eat at least four servings of vegetables and three servings of fruits daily. Produce contains an abundance of vital nutrients and is often fiber-rich and low in calories, which helps you to feel full.
DON’T overlook the impact of beverages on weight loss. The calories in sugary beverages, including some all-natural fruit juices, can add up quickly. Stick to water, tea or other unsweetened beverages to help with weight loss.
DO get moving more. The Mayo Clinic notes that while it is possible to lose weight without exercise, getting moving can help burn the excess calories you can’t cut through diet alone. Exercise boosts metabolism, benefits mood and strengthens muscles and the cardiovascular system, as well.

ing. Most healthy diets involve some sort of calorie-counting, whether they actually require you to document your intake or use a formula to attribute “points” or another measure related to what you eat. Writing or tracking the foods and beverages you consume will provide the most honest assessment of habits that could affect weight loss.
DO include foods you enjoy. Completely restricting access to occasional treats may cause you to resent healthy eating, which can derail weight loss goals. The principle of moderation can apply to healthy weight loss as long as you account for the more calorie-dense foods. Losing weight in a healthy manner is achievable when you seek guidance and follow some time-tested techniques.

Veteran To Share His Story
The Military Oral History Club of Lancaster County will meet on Tuesday, Jan. 31, at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2435, 401 Manor St., Columbia, at 7 p.m.
The speaker will be Louis Cinfici, a native of Reading. Wanting to follow in the foot-
steps of his brothers who were in the military, at the age of 16, Cinfici forged his parents’ signatures so he could enlist in the Merchant Marines. In the Atlantic Theater, his job was to salvage what he could from destroyed ships and save as many lives as possible. He
then traveled to the Pacific Theater, where he fought at Midway, Iwo Jima, Okinawa and other locations. He and his shipmates shot down several kamikaze planes that nearly hit them. After he was old enough to legally sign up, Cinfici joined the Navy, and he
fought in Korea and Vietnam. He was recently awarded the Gold Medal of Honor.
The meeting is open to all World War II veterans and anyone with an interest in World War II history. For more information, call 717319-3430.

BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
On Thursday, Jan. 19, local professor Rusty Banks will perform a concert titled “Creatures: Some Mythical” at The Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. and include several visual art projections created by Dan Zdilla and Andy Babin.
Banks began writing the music for the show on a classical guitar five years ago.
Using surround-sound speakers, Banks started toying with the position of each note to play with the audience’s perception of space and sound. The resulting piece features guitar melodies that shift from one end of the room to the other in an attempt to blur the lines between reality and imagination. The theme of the show follows its methods closely. Each movement depicts a different creature that is surrounded in lore;
some of the creatures are real and some are fictitious.
“It started out with cryptids, and then I started adding real creatures that just have mythical qualities,” said Banks. “They’re all mythical in some way. The show splits the difference between the real and the mythical.”
The first movement is named after the hoop snake, a rare creature that Banks remembers hearing about while growing up in rural
Alabama. According to those who claim to have seen it in person, the hoop snake is a reptile that travels by biting its own tail and rolling down hills like a wheel. Banks mimics the behavior of the hoop snake in his movement by using an echo effect while playing the guitar so that each note is repeated. “Much like the tale of the hoop snake, this music in the piece seems to chase itself,” Banks said. The concert will comprise six movements, each named after a different creature that will be visually represented with a collage made by Dan Zdilla. For example, one of the movements is named after the hellbender - a very rare but very real salamander. According to folklore, the hellbender protects fish from fishermen by covering fishing hooks with slime so that fish won’t bite them. The accompanying collage portrays the hellbender protecting a pond full of fish.
Banks and Zdilla collaborated on the musical and visual aspects of the show and enlisted Babin to project the collages onto the stage during the performance. Banks has worked with both Zdilla and Babin on other projects in the past and is an adjunct professor at Millersville University, where he teaches guitar and virtual instruments.
“One thing I hope to do with the show is to make the audience question the space they’re sitting in and make it seem like things are happening that aren’t possible,” said Banks. “I want it to feel like the audience is taking a journey into those collages and meeting those creatures.”

Rural Development Grants Available
U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development will accept grant applications for the Distance Learning and Telemedicine (DLT) program to help people in rural and tribal communities access remote education and health care resources. The DLT program helps fund real-time, interactive distance learning and telemedicine services in rural and tribal areas to increase access to education, training, and health care resources that are otherwise limited or unavailable.
For instance, the DLT pro-
gram gives students the opportunity to participate in classes that may be in places that are too far to access. DLT funds can also help connect rural people virtually to medical professionals without leaving their home.
USDA plans to make $64 million available in fiscal year 2023. Of this amount, $12 million is intended for projects that provide substance use disorder treatment services to people in rural areas.
Eligible applicants include state and local governmental entities, federally recognized
tribes, nonprofits, and forprofit businesses. Applications must be submitted electronically through www.grants.gov by Monday, Jan. 30. For additional information, visit www.rd.usda.gov and look under Programs and Services for Telecommunications Programs and then click on Distance Learning and Telemedicine Grants.
USDA is offering priority points to projects that meet certain criteria. These extra points will increase the likelihood of funding. For more information, visit www.rd .usda.gov/priority-points.
Saving Strategies For Young Adults
When a person is young, saving money may be the furthest thing from his or her mind.
After all, this may be a time to enroll in college or trade school; make a first big purchase, such as a car; or even get married. Thinking about establishing a solid financial footing for the future can take a back seat when life is filled with so many significant events.
But it is never too early to start saving - even when saving seems to be an impossible task. Young adults should keep saving in mind and look to various strategies that can set them up for long-term financial security.
An initial strategy should be to set long-term goals. It is easier to save when saving is attached to specific goals.
W hile some may aspire to retire early, establish an emergency fund, or to purchase a home, others may want to save for an overseas vacation. Motivation to save can make it that much easier to do so.
It is important to determine where one spends the most. Saving money on smaller purchases will add up over time, but to really build a robust savings, it is important to figure out one’s biggest expenditures and how that spending be cut back to pad savings. The Logic of Money reports that the aver-
age American spends more than 60% of their income on housing and transportation. Figuring out how to cut costs in these categories can be a great way to save.
Young adults are tied to their digital devices and can find ways to make them work for them. Free cash-back apps give people money back for various purchases. Some can be linked directly to a credit or debit card to have passive income deposited directly. With others, individuals can cash out as a direct deposit or via a payment app like PayPal.
U.S. News & World Report advises that individuals make it a point to put away $1 for every $3 earned into a savings account. That is a good measure f or establishing a rainy day fund. If an individuals does not trust themselves to transfer the money, they can have a set amount automatically deposited from their paycheck into a designated savings account.
Consumers should treat credit cards like using cash. The “buy now, pay later” option is an attractive trap to fall into. Using credit cards often is a safer way to pay merchants, because others’ money is being risked rather than one’s own with a debit card. However, using credit can make it challenging to visualize what is actually being

spent. Individuals should not purchase more than they can pay off within each billing cycle. Account alerts can be set up on a phone to let individuals know when they have hit their budgeted credit card spending limit. Individuals should also resist the urge to open and use too many cards.
Young adults can begin saving early with some conventional and highly effective strategies.

For Organization
When the new year arrives, many people focus on changes that can be implemented in the months to come. This time of year is a popular one to make resolutions to clean and organize homes and offices.
There are plenty of things that can use a little organizational attention. There’s no ideal way to get organized. Getting organized can be as simple as taking small steps that have lasting impact. Whatever works is a good approach, but the following are six strategies to help individuals clear the clutter.
First, utilize to-do lists. People tend to be less productive when they store all of their tasks in their brains. The first step to getting organized is to remove those plans from the head and put them down on paper or in some other tracking tool. A digital to-do list manager, for example, enables people to see all their tasks, deadlines, and due dates in one place so they can get things done more efficiently. Consider carrying around a notepad or using the digital notes app on a phone to jot down thoughts and needs as they come up.
Second, it is a good strategy to corral one’s “smalls.” Smalls are keys, phones, chargers, wallets, headphones, and other accessories. When these
items are grouped together, they are easier to find and allow one to stay on track. Invest in an attractive organizer and install it by the front door or another high-traffic area. It will cut down on trying to find those smaller items when running errands.
It is important to conquer clutter regularly. It is easy to put off cleaning and organizing when clutter has gotten out of control. Instead, by cleaning up items on a daily or weekly basis, it is much easier to keep ahead of clutter. Combatting clutter should be treated like a daily job, including sorting mail and tossing unnecessary items, emptying waste pails, dusting the desk, deleting emails, and putting items back where they belong.
Another strategy is to categorize emails. Individuals can utilize the folder creation option from popular email providers to sort messages. Messages that need attention can then be dropped into categories of one’s choosing,
such as school, health, and receipts. Then an individual will know which folder to go into when searching for what they need, eliminating the time-consuming task of scrolling through a full inbox.
When bringing new items into the home, follow the procedure of giving away or throwing out one item for each new item that is received or purchased. This can help to tame clutter.
“Mise en place” is French for “put in place.” It is used in the kitchen to refer to preparing
and setting out all ingredients needed in a recipe. The same concept can be used elsewhere. Clothing can be laid out on the dresser for the next day at work or school. The foyer of a home can be prepped with items one may need, like an umbrella, shoes, and paperwork. Backpacks can be organized so they are ready for the school day. Establishment of a to-go bag at work for items that need to be brought home can also save time by keeping things organized.

A virtual S.A.V.E. Training on Suicide Prevention will be offered on Tuesday, Jan. 24, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. via the Webex platform.
Suicide prevention is the top clinical priority for Veterans Affairs (VA), and the VA seeks to connect veterans who are experiencing an emotional or mental health crisis with lifesaving support. The VA seeks to involve veterans’ family members, peers, and communities so people can work together to reach veterans before a crisis occurs.
The upcoming training is designed to give caregivers key information about suicide prevention, the warning signs for suicide risk, and where to get help. S.A.V.E. encourages caregivers to act with care and compassion if they encounter a suicidal veteran. S.A.V.E. stands for signs of suicidal thinking, ask questions, validate the person’s experience, and encourage treatment and expedite getting help.
To register, visit https:// tinyurl.com/savetraining. Once individuals register, they will be sent the meeting link and other sign-in information to join via a computer, phone, or other smart device. Attendees may download the Webex app to participate, or they may join via telephone.
For more details, contact Lebanon VA Medical Center’s caregiver support number, 717-228-5996.
in many ways, GiGi’s Playhouse is just getting started.
“When we opened three years ago, it was exciting,” said Christine Hewitt, GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster’s site coordinator, “because there were support groups, but there wasn’t anything in the area like it. The main goal is to change the way people view Down syn-
drome. Everything we do here is designed to help people with Down syndrome do their best. But we also support their families.”
More than a playhouse or even a school, GiGi’s Playhouse is a Down syndrome achievement center. The Lancaster location serves nearly 380 participants and their families
through hands-on programs, tutoring, exercise classes, activities, arts and crafts and life skill-building sessions, all free of charge.
GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster’s participants range in age from infants to those 60 years of age. Hewitt is the lone paid employee, but she’s supported by a staff of more than 40 volunteers.
“We practice a lot of like skills here,” said Hewitt, a resident of Ephrata. “We focus so much on little steps, on the next steps they can do. Here, we celebrate little wins. They’re little things we take for granted.”
“People often think people with Down syndrome can’t do things,” continued Hewitt.
“The truth is they can. They’re just going to need more time or a little help. They’re so capable of so much.”
GiGi’s Playhouse bears the name of GiGi Gianni, who was born with Down syndrome in Chicago more than 20 years ago. Since the first GiGi’s Playhouse was founded, 54 other

Albright LIFE Center Opens
The new Albright LIFE Center at 417 W. Frederick St., Lancaster, is now open, providing all-inclusive care for those who qualify. The acronym LIFE stands for Living Independence for the Elderly, and the LIFE Center’s goal is for seniors to age in place with no need to enter a skilled nursing facility. The center offers options for home care assistance and daily socialization, as well as transportation for all doctor’s visits.
Albright LIFE Centers are also located in Lebanon, Chester and Lycoming counties. For more information, visit www.albrightlife.org or call 717-381-4320.

locations have been opened, including the one in Lancaster, the only site in Pennsylvania.
“Since we opened, people have really come out,” said Hewitt. “How quickly we’ve grown is surprising. We’ve outgrown this building. But what’s also surprising is how much of an impact it has had on our participants.”
“It’s allowed them to become their best selves,” added Hewitt. “I’ve seen so many participants come out of their shells. This is like a home to them. They are safe here. They take a lot of pride in this place.”
