Snow removal planning begins in Manheim well before the first flake falls.
Ensuring Safe Travels ike a kid wondering if school will be canceled, Lindsey Uhlig anxiously watches the weather forecast every winter. But for Uhlig, snow means going to work. Uhlig is the public works director for Manheim Borough, where not only does she oversee four employees who plow the streets, but she’s also out on the roads behind the wheel of a plow whenever winter weather strikes. She answered some questions about how the borough handles snow removal and keeps Manheim residents safe. Merchandiser: How many miles of roads does the borough plow? Uhlig: We plow 27 miles, and 13 of them are alleys. Merchandiser: At what point do you start plowing? And how long does it typically take?
way out into the alleys and smaller streets that are not our main arteries. Main and High streets and the square are the top of our list.
M e r c h a n d i s e r : When does the borough start planning for snow removal, and what do you use on the roads? Uhlig: We typically start in the beginning of December, after we finish with leaf collecting, because we use the same equipment for both operations. We don’t use antiskid on our roads. We use regular salt.
Merchandiser: What’s the most challenging part about plowing? U h l i g : The biggest problem we have is parked cars in town. We try to notify people the best we can when they need to move their cars. We want people to know that if they move their cars off the street, we will plow right up next to the curb and make a nice parking space for them.
M e r c h a n d i s e r : How does the borough determine the order and priority of plowing roads? U h l i g : The snow emergency routes are our priority. We need to get those clear, and we clear out the police station and the ambulance. There are seven streets on our snow emergency routes. Then we start in the center of town and work our
M e r c h a n d i s e r : What hours do you plow? Uhlig: We work around the clock. We have plowed all day and all night. Typically, we plow with two drivers on and two off for 12-hour shifts. We won’t go home until I’m satisfied with the safety of traffic flow and the conditions of the roads.
Merchandiser: If a resident has questions about the borough snow policies, what should he or she do? Uhlig: We have lots of information on our website - https://manheimboro.org - or they can call the borough office at 717-665-2461.

Merchandiser: Is there anything else you’d like people in Manheim to know about snow removal? Uhlig: Please be patient with us. It’s very difficult to know how long it’s going to take to plow or when we’re going to get to a certain road, because it all depends on the weather conditions. There is a lot of strategizing that goes into this. We’re constantly working on new ways to improve our operations, better ways to improve ourselves as well. There is a strategy to snow removal, and we want to do it in the most efficient way that will keep everyone safe. Everything we do is to keep our roads safe for the residents of Manheim.

When House of His Creation (HOHC) executive director Matthew Neff and his wife, HOHC house manager Callie Neff, considered whether to breed their dog, Maggie, with a friend’s chocolate Labrador, they thought it would happen in early summer and that maybe they would have puppies in the ministry’s location at 301 N. Broad St., Lititz in the fall of 2021. Maggie had other ideas. Instead of early summer, Maggie was bred in late September. As a result, on Dec. 1, 2021, Maggie gave birth to seven live puppies four males and three females. Six of the puppies are black and one is chocolate. Two-year-old Maggie, who came from a Lititz farm, is a mixture of German shepherd, blue heeler, and possibly some Labrador. Maggie looks much like a black Lab, and Matt mentioned that she has the webbed paws and gentle temperament associated with a retriever.

ducks, chickens, and goats, as well. “(Animals) bring an extra level of joy.” Currently, the Neffs also keep a somewhat cantankerous pug named Po at the house. “The pug is comic relief, and Maggie provides love,” noted Matt. By mid-December, the Neffs could identify the individual puppies by name names based on appearance, behavior, and even birth order. “This little one is Runtie, and the one with the big face is Gigantor,” said Callie, who noted her daughter named one puppy Goose because he sticks by Gigantor so closely. The pairing inspired comparisons to famous sidekicks, including Maverick and Goose from “Top Gun.” Two of the puppies resemble their mother in that they have a white spot on their chests; the female is Little Maggie, and the male is Magnus. The single brown puppy is Brownie. The last puppy to be born is called Miracle Baby because Maggie began to give birth just after

midnight. One of the puppies was stillborn, and Runtie made his appearance at 6 a.m. The Neffs suspected the birthing was complete, but at noon Miracle Baby arrived. According to the Neffs, Michelle Gibbs, program director for HOHC, has been interacting with Maggie for two years and often remarked that if she could find a dog like her, she would get one. Gibbs will have first pick of the litter, followed by a number of others who have expressed serious interest in the puppies. Considering Maggie’s mixed
breeding, the Neffs have come up with their own name for the type of dogs in the whelping box next to their bed. “We call them snuggle puppies,” said Callie. “They are very loving.” Matt agreed. “Holding a puppy is like holding a baby,” he said. “(When you hold one), life isn’t so bad. (A puppy) is very therapeutic.” More information about HOHC may be found at www.hohc.org. Those with specific questions may email mail@hohc.org or call 717-626-0263.

BOWLING The Barons won 7-0 against Garden Spot on Jan. 6. Ethan Howard rolled a three-game 558, including a third game 193. Hailey Kowalski had 502 triple and Holly Hunt rolled a 155-143-157 for 455. Jesse Hurst rolled a 385 triple and Landen Statts had a three-game 468. “They were hitting the pockets well and hitting strikes,” Barons’ coach Alan Slides said. “The second game they hit spares. That’s a team (Garden Spot) that last year and the year before our kids win a game, but we would lose. This is the first year we dominated the scoring.” On Jan. 10, Manheim rolled to its sixth win this year, shutting out Lancaster Catholic, 7-0. Howard paced the Barons with a 685 triple. Statts was next with a 569 and Kowalski and Hurst rolled a 486 and 482, respectively. “Overall, except for a couple of frames, they had a really good match,” Slides said. “I am happy with how they did.” RIFLE Central beat Wilson 495-484 on Jan. 6. Genna Eberly and Anna Haldeman each shot a perfect 100. Ellie McCabe had a 99 and Trevor Frey and Kyria Martin each had 98. “It was great to see the entire team shoot well,” Barons’ coach Steve Waddington said. “Two 100s and a 99 and everyone else came through with a 98. Hoping we can continue and add in some more 100s and 99s.” Manheim handed Conestoga

BOYS’ BASKETBALL The Barons rallied for a 68-58 overtime victory over Octorara on Jan. 11. The Barons tied the Braves at 54 at the end of regulation. Trey Grube paced Manheim with 21 points. Judd Novak scored most of his 18 points in the fourth quarter and overtime and Collin Thompson added 14 points. Central beat Red Land 60-39 behind Grube’s 23 points. Thompson added nine. Manheim started the week with a 66-55 triumph over Fleetwood. Thompson led the Barons with a
career-high 23 points, including seven 3-pointers. Novak added 18 points. “He got hot, and we found him,” Barons’ coach Charlie Fisher said about Thompson. “Defenses have to make a decision. They helped off and let Thompson open. He was 7of-10 from 3-point range.” Central led 16-13 after the first quarter and 38-28 at halftime. Fleetwood cut the Barons’ lead to only five after three quarters, but Manheim went up by 16 with about three minutes left to play. “Fleetwood is a good team,” Fisher said. “They were 7-0 going into the game. We wanted to control the tempo with what we did. We got the ball reversing and kept it moving. We played good team-ball.”

W hen Candace Abel became involved with the CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) program in Lancaster, she noticed something. There were plenty of programs in place to help the children she was advocating for, but it was a different story for the young mothers. “The mother of my very first CASA child appointment was developmentally disabled and only 19 years old,” Abel recalled. “She was really in need of strong and loving guidance, but she did not fit into any of the local programs for single moms. … I kept thinking what she needed was a reliable ally who could offer both advice and comfort to make the difference in her future life.” From that experience, Second Grace was born. The twoyear program for single mothers below the age of 25 will match “Graces” - the mothers - with “Sages” - trained mentors who will advocate on the mother’s behalf. The Sage might do anything from offering advice to driving the Grace to court or child care classes, helping with budgeting or assisting with finding housing. Each Grace will have her own Sage, but the Graces will move through the program in groups of four who will attend monthly Grace Gatherings. “This will give our Grace clients the opportunity to build community with someone who can understand their challenges,” Abel explained. “Additionally, they will need a better peer support system to get and stay healthy.” During the second year of Second Grace, the Graces will move into the work phase of the program. “Our vision includes long-term stability for our Grace, and an understanding of the value of steady employment is an important piece of this stability,” Abel stated. The goal is to employ the Graces either at Girl Crush, a bath and body products company Abel started in 2017, or other local businesses. Abel founded Girl Crush after retiring from Brittany’s Hope, the special needs adoption advocacy program she created after losing her first adopted child in a car accident. She’s the mother of 17
children, 13 of whom are girls. “Every time I would adopt another daughter, people would say to me, ‘You must have a girl crush,’” she said. Although Abel was inspired by another organization, Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles, the idea for Second Grace is a unique one and required creation from the ground up. “The cream of the crop came forward,” she said, of Deborah Wilson Gadsden, a child welfare expert who is writing the curriculum for the Sages, and Karen Jaskot, a family and addiction therapist who has written the curriculum for the Graces. With the foundation for Second Grace set and a strong executive committee and board of directors in place, the program is ready to begin Sage mentor training. “Sages need the fortitude to go the road for two years with these women and the extraordinary, compassionate patience to stand firm and help when
Candace Abel
these women meet obstacles,” Abel said. “I am sure that when we make a good match, it will be life changing.” An information session for potential Sages is set for Sat-
urday, Jan. 15, 2022, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Event Barn at 1610 Landis Road, Mount Joy. For more information or to register, visit https://secondgrace.org.

“Younger generations are more apt to accept, support, and encourage loved ones to get help (for mental health issues),” said Kim McDevitt, executive director of Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC). “That’s a culture shift,” added McDevitt, who noted that data shows people are being educated about mental health. “That is the only way we will reduce the stigma,” she concluded. McDevitt noted that breaking through the stigma should result in a changed view of overall wellness. “We will be looking at mental health the same way we look at physical health because they’re intertwined,” she shared. “If you aren’t mentally well, you will not be physically well (and vice versa).” Noting that variables
associated with COVID-19 have propelled attitudes toward mental health forward, McDevitt pointed to specific areas where struggles have been clear, including with children and in workplaces. “I think if there’s ever a time to address good mental health support in the workplace, it’s now,” noted McDevitt. “Supervisors need to understand that depression alters the person.” McDevitt added that while job expectations are necessary, flexibility is essential to help maintain employee mental wellness. “Someone who is struggling will be less productive, tardy, not meet deadlines, or be absent. The more (employees are supported) and connected to care, the more they want to give back, and the faster they will want to heal.” According to McDevitt, data is also showing that parents of today’s children are

likely to seek support for a child’s mental health needs. In addition, teachers and guidance counselors are available to children attending school. In Pennsylvania, young people age 14 and older may make their own mental health decisions. McDevitt noted that teenagers may contact MHALC directly to be connected to resources. Because the northeast por-

However, it still takes most people who experience issues more than a decade to seek help. MHALC supports and resources, including an online screening program, are available. Capital Blue Cross has been named one of the Best Places to Work in Pennsylvania for the fourth consecutive year, placing 23rd among large companies. According to Capital Blue Cross president and CEO Todd Shamash, the designation is awarded based on employees’ evaluations of the company. Most Capital Blue Cross employees began working remotely in March 2020 to best ensure their safety and well-being, while a small number of staff continued to work on-site to provide critical support services. As the COVID-19 pandemic evolved, Capital Blue Cross did, too, reinventing the way its employees work. Shows will take place on Fridays, Jan. 28 and Feb. 4, at 7 p.m.; Saturdays, Jan. 29 and Feb. 5, at 2 and 7 p.m.; and Sundays, Jan. 30 and Feb. 6, at 2 p.m. Set in the fictional town of Grover’s Corners, N.H., at the turn of the 20th century, this three-act play explores themes of love, legacy, and the simple joys of life. The Youth Theatre production features a cast of 20 teen performers. “Our Town” is one of two winter youth productions happening in January and February, along with “Matilda Jr.,” an adaptation of the Broadway
musical based on Roald Dahl’s classic story. This is the first time that Servant Stage has featured two concurrent winter youth productions, and “Our Town” marks the first straight play to be performed as part of Servant Stage’s Youth Theatre program. All performances are available by donation as part of Servant Stage’s mission to make performances accessible to everyone in the community. Reservations
are required, as shows frequently do sell out. To obtain tickets or see the full list of performances and venues, visit www.ServantStage.org or call 717-455-0255. director of operations will oversee the day-to-day activities of the branch. A single corporate office will manage both counties. The YMCA of the Roses will conduct centralized fundraising activities, but ensure that past, present, and future restricted funds are used for their intended purpose and align with the donor’s intent. The volunteer leadership for both associations will have an opportunity to continue serving with the new organization in some capacity. The YMCA of the Roses’ board of directors will be made up of volunteer leadership from both counties as will the various other committees related to overall operations of the merged YMCA. Local committees will ensure that each area’s operations are appropriate and relevant for their respective communities. Direct service volunteers, such as ones from United Way initiatives, will continue to have opportunities to serve their local YMCA. The merged YMCA of the Roses will run five branches and five pools across both counties in rural, suburban,
and urban communities. It will have a combined operating budget of about $15 million and over 500 employees, and it will serve over 30,000 members a year. YMCA of the Roses will work with over 1,500 volunteers for a combined 20,000 service hours and give out over $2 million in financial assistance so everyone can afford a YMCA membership. YMCA of the Roses will have an office for a New American Welcome Center in each county so that newcomers to the area can access YMCA resources. Its free or low-cost child development programs will serve 600 children. Summer camp in five locations across both counties, including financial assistance, will work to ensure that all the community’s children can go to camp. The organization’s leadership will continually evaluate community issues and resources so that it can implement charitable programs to meet the region’s new and emerging needs. Both YMCAs’ leadership voted to move forward with a merger process, establishing a Merger Task Force, including representatives from each YMCA and the Pennsylvania State Alliance of YMCAs, along with the York and Lancaster YMCA president/CEO.
