Ruhl’s Church Will Offer Free Soup BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Ruhl’s Church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, wants to spread love while warming hearts and stomachs. The church will hold a free soup drive-through on Saturday, Jan. 30, from 10 a.m. until noon or until the soup runs out. This is the first time the church will be holding an event featuring free soup but not the first time the church has offered a drive-through

format. The organizers were inspired by a free takeout ham dinner offered during the church’s drive-through Nativity in December, said organizer Kris Gray. “The free ham dinner was so well received that we wanted to offer another free food event to share the love of Jesus with our community,” Gray noted. “Homemade soup is a great comfort food and perfect for warming up during these cold days.” See Soup pg 2

Eden Addisu, a Manheim resident and senior at Lancaster Mennonite High School, will attend Brown University on a Questbridge scholarship in the fall.

LMHS Student Named Questbridge Scholar Manheim Resident Will Attend Brown University BY ANN MEAD ASH

ancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) senior Eden Addisu had been receiving emails from Questbridge, a nonprofit scholarship program for exceptional students from lowincome backgrounds, for quite some time; however, she had not seriously considered applying to the organization. But during the COVID-19 quarantine, Addisu had more time than she might have had school been meeting on campus. “I thought, ‘Why not?’” said Addisu. The application process for the Questbridge College Match program has been called rigorous. Addisu noted that the application includes four essays rather than just one and that the deadline in September of 2020 of each year is earlier than most programs require. She completed her application for submission in early September 2020, and she learned on Oct. 20 that she was a finalist. More

Outside school, Addisu enjoys working with children, and she teaches Sunday school at two area churches – the Ethiopian Evangelical church in Landisville and Worship Center in Leola. She has hopes of eventually becoming a pediatrician. Addisu chose Brown University because of the school’s offerings in her chosen area of study. “(Brown is) great for pre-med,” she said, noting that the school also provides an open curriculum, which she favors. “There are no general education requirements,” she said. “That will give me time to explore other things I am interested in.” Hoping to attend the Providence, R.I., school in person, Addisu has already connected with the Questbridge scholarship network, a group of students who applied for Questbridge scholarships and have become acquainted via social media. Readers who would like to know more about LMHS may visit www.lancastermennonite.org.

Following the success of its free ham dinner drive-through in December, Ruhl’s Church will host a free soup drive-through on Saturday, Jan. 30.

ABC Keystone Goes Solar BY CATHY MOLITORIS

By focusing on its roof, the Associated Builders and Contractors Keystone Chapter (ABC Keystone) is working to go green. The chapter installed a rooftop solar array on its 31,000-square-foot training facility at 135 Shellyland Road, Manheim, in December. The solar panels will provide ABC Keystone with 60% to 65% of its electrical energy and represent a trend for efficiency throughout the building, said G. David Sload, chapter president-CEO.

paperwork was required by Nov. 1, and on Dec. 1, she received the news that she was a scholarship recipient and had been matched with Brown University, her first choice for college. Addisu was elated. The Questbridge scholarship covers tuition, room and board, meals, books, and school supplies. Addisu will take part in a work study program during the school year, and she will be responsible for a summer contribution as part of the program. Addisu’s parents came from Ethiopia to the U.S. two years before she was born. Addisu attended Kraybill Mennonite School in Mount Joy, and then came to LMHS as a freshman. She has been active in the International Students Association. Academically, Addisu has taken a number of Advanced Placement classes in subjects such as biology, chemistry, government and politics, world history, and U.S. history. These accomplishments strengthened her application.

first-served, so no reservations are needed. “There will be differentsized containers, and the portion will be determined by family size,” Gray remarked, adding that soup also makes a great donation to a family in need. “If you do not eat soup, then prayerfully consider someone who would be blessed by such a gift during these challenging times.” Gray said organizers hope to hold free soup events on a regular basis. The next one is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 20.

“A family in the church makes the soup using an old church recipe,” Gray said. Refrigerated containers of soup will be distributed to anyone who attends the event and will be delivered directly to cars. “You can drive up to the carport at the church to receive your soup,” she explained. “You will not even need to leave your car. Just heat the soup up at home when you are ready to serve it.” The event is first-come,

“Less Snore, More Cuddle” Are you having trouble sleeping in 2021? If so, please... Take This Reader’s Quiz:

Troy Peters

1. Do you snore at night, or sleep with someone who does? 2. Do you wake up with pain in your back or neck? 3. Do you share a bed with someone who wants a firmer or softer mattress than you? 4. Do you wish you could wake up more refreshed and full of energy? If you answered “Yes” twice or more, this story is for you.

Introducing “Less Snore, More Cuddle™” Sleep Systems

The Snoring Solution

Camdyn Lehman

Did you know that astronauts don’t snore in space? Snoring is made worse by gravity’s effect on the throat, which narrows the airway. For this reason, snoring can be cured by sleeping in zero gravity -- or on an adjustable Cuddle Zone sleep system to elevate you head.

Stop Compromising Your Sleep If you wish you half of the bed was firmer or softer, a Cuddle Zone system can help. With “His & Her” custom-fit technology, you get a firmness that’s just right for each of you, you keep the Cuddle Zone.

Back and Neck Pain, Gone Sleeping without pain requires body support and spinal alignment. Unlike “firm or soft” mattresses, Cuddle Zone systems support the spine and neck with 2 to 4 comfort layers.

More Energy, More Life Cuddle Zone systems help give you deep, restorative sleep. Your muscles repair and grow, and your brain flushes out toxins. You wake up refreshed and energized.

Budget Bed or Sleep System? Why visit a local store when you can shop online? Because we don’t sell budget beds. We offer sleep systems, combining mattress, adjustable base and pillow. Each fitted to your needs. You can even experience any sleep system in our Dream Room. No website does that.

And those “unbiased” mattress review websites? They’re often owned by huge, private equity firms. But we’re not a faceless company. We’re locally owned in Lancaster. When you shop here, you support the community.

Now Explore Your Options At Gardner’s Mattress & More, we’ve curated over 24 Cuddle Zone sleep systems for you to see in person, 7 days a week. Private appointments are available. People enjoy our shopping experience, in part because there’s no sales pressure ever. And we have over 200 verified stories of customer delight for your review. W hen Anne Marie McAlester became executive director of Hope Within Ministries in October 2019, she started thinking about changing the sign outside the Elizabethtown organization. “I felt it didn’t communicate everything we are about,” she said. So last fall, she applied for a community awareness grant through Hershey Medical Center and received funding for a new sign. The sign, at 4748 East Harrisburg Pike, now reads “Hope Within Community Health, Counseling & Dental Center.” “ We are a free primary medical care clinic, and we’ve been offering that since 2006,” McAlester noted. “In 2014, we added counseling, and we hoped to add dental in (early 2020), but COVID pushed that back until we finally opened our dental clinic in July 2020.” McAlester said the nonprofit provides primary care for uninsured, low-income people in Lancaster, Lebanon and Dauphin counties. “These are people who work parttime hours without benefits or people who have lost their jobs or are unemployed,” she explained. Counseling is offered on a sliding-scale payment plan and is open to anyone, with no income qualifications. All medical services are provided by volunteers, including a volunteer psychiatrist who comes in twice a month. “We use a battalion of volunteer medical providers who

work full time somewhere else but volunteer here a few hours a month,” McAlester noted. “We use graduate students under the supervision of licensed counselors for our mental health counseling.” She added that the organization hopes to expand its dental clinic but is in need of more volunteer dentists. Over the last year, Hope Within has seen a rising need for its services. “Across the board, we’ve seen huge increases. We’re seeing people who have lost their jobs, people who are afraid of losing their jobs. We’ve seen a major spike in requests for services. We have people who can no longer afford insulin or asthma medication,” McAlester remarked. “These medications are very Hope Within Ministries staff members (from left) Jo expensive.” Davidson, Anne Marie McAlester and Beth Moad show The organization typically off the new sign that reflects all of the organization’s See Hope pg 6 offerings.

Hope Within is planning a Valentine’s Day fundraiser, she noted, with more information coming soon on the organization’s Facebook page. “We’ll ask people to donate to us, and in return, we’ll send a personalized card out on their behalf,” McAlester explained. Along with financial constraints, the organization lost a lot of volunteer office staff and a few doctors, many of whom are elderly and were worried about the risk of continuing to volunteer during a pandemic. Despite these challenges, McAlester remains hopeful that Hope Within will continue to thrive. “We are a Christian ministry, and our faith is strong,” she stated. “We rely on our faith, and we have found that God has been faithful. Even though this past year has been hard, we have surpassed whatever goals we have set.”

GREAT SELECTION OF QUALITY TIRE BRANDS ABC Keystone installed a solar array on its roof in December. The panels will provide up to 65% of the building’s power and will offer hands-on training opportunities for students.

“It is always our goal to be good stewards of our resources and energy consumption, and we strive to do our part for the environment,” he said. W hen the training facility was built in 2015, it was not initially costeffective to install solar panels, he noted, but advances in technology have now made it possible. At the time of construction, builders planned ahead and constructed a roof with a slope and direction to maximize sun exposure as well as materials to bear the additional weight of the array. In addition to the solar array, the training facility features LED fixtures throughout the building as well as motion sensor-controlled room lights and large windows to allow shop and classroom spaces to be used without lights. The facility’s HVAC equipment was also designed to be energy efficient. “We are confident that by now utilizing solar energy as

well, we are keeping our carbon footprint to a minimum,” Sload said. The training facility hosts students in apprenticeship programs across nine trades in the construction industry. The solar panels are not only allowing the facility to be greener but are also providing a unique learning experience for students, Sload noted. “Part of the electrical curriculum is about solar (power),” he explained. “This will give us a great opportunity to have access to an actual real-life array instead of just learning through a book. We’ll actually be able to take students onto the roof to see how everything operates and have a hands-on experience.” As systems age throughout the building, Sload said he expects more energy-efficient solutions to be installed. “Our goal will always be to replace outdated systems with modern technology,” he stated. “We are committed to using green energy sources.”

Knier’s 26 points Lead Barons Over Red Land

BY ERIC G. STARK

The Manheim sharpshooters, fresh off a 2020 league championship, are off to a 3-0 start. The Barons beat Wilson 493-484 Friday, Jan. 8. Kami Groff and Anna Haldeman each registered perfect scores of 100. Ellie McCabe had a 99, Genna Eberly and Nate Sauder each posted 97 to round out the top five. The three girls at the top of the scoring will be a key to the Barons’ success this season. “The big factor is that they all came through,” Waddington said. “If they don’t come through, we could be in trouble, because of depth. I need the top three to shoot well. We don’t have the depth yet.” The Barons got their second win on Jan. 11 with a 494-488 victory over Governor Mifflin. Groff and McCabe continued their strong shooting with 100 scores. Haldeman and Trevor Frey each fired a 99. Nate Sauder rounded out the top five with a 96. Back on the range Jan. 12, Manheim defeated Conestoga Valley, 495-492. Haldeman and McCabe each were perfect at 100. Frey had a 99 and two new shooters jumped into the top five with Kyler Groff and Genna Eberly both at 98. BOWLING The Barons won their first match of the season against Elco at Berks Lanes, 2457-2374 on Jan. 12. Jesse Hurst was the top bowler for Manheim, posting game scores of 203207-193 for a 603 series. Landen Statts was next with a 499 total behind game scores of 148-181170. Cole Shontz had a three-game series of 488 on scores of 189-193106. Holly Shea-Hunt placed fourth with a 477 after games of 179-164134 and Hailey Kowalski had a 390 on scores of 130-128-132. Head coach Alan Sides was pleased with the result and the performance of his young squad. “Compared to practice, the performance was above my expectations,” Sides said. “They didn’t have consistent practices. They impressed me with how they concentrated and bowled well.” BOYS’ BASKETBALL In a 49-46 nail-bitter, the Barons dropped their home opener to Cocalico Jan. 8. Zach Benner and Judd Novak led the Barons in scoring with 12 and 10 points, respectively. MC was up two with six minutes to play and had two clean looks with less than 10 seconds to win the game but missed the shots. “We battled and it came down to a play here and a there,” Manheim coach Charlie Fisher said. “It looked a lot like last year and that has to change. The bulk of the rotation is back, and we have to pull these Staff photo games out.” Kaylie Kroll looks to put a rebound back up during the Barons’ 55-19 victory in last Monday’s nonManheim bounced back with a league game at Red Land. 64-53 triumph over Fleetwood Jan. tied 13-13 at intermission. Cocalico broke the game open with a 20point third quarter to take a 33-21 lead with eight minutes remaining. Central clamped down on defense and went on a 14-6 to close the game and narrow the final margin. “They (Cocalico) had a great third quarter where their seniors made a nice run and we had a little bit of a drought,” Manheim Coach Tyson Hayes said. “I loved the way we competed and the effort we

gave for 32 minutes.” On Jan. 13, MC lost 46-29 to Lampeter-Strasburg. Knier had a team-high 14 Maddie Knier paced Manheim points. He had had his opponent in a cradle, but the time expired. In the next period he got the cradle again and closed the deal. “He is really coming on,” Chamberlain said. “He is constantly looking to score points.” The Barons, behind late falls from Rocco Daugherty and Brett Barbush, beat Lower Dauphin 33-31 on Jan. 9, despite missing three starters. At 285, Ryland Fittery started the match with a pin. Just 30 seconds into his bout, Dakoda Thomas added another fall at 152. Manheim started seniors and nine underclassmen, including six freshmen. One of those freshmen was Gabe Thomas, who earned a 32 win at 106, turning his man in the third period. Sophomore Aiden Krell, who Chamberlain said is always moving, pulled out a 16-14 overtime victory at 113. RIFLE Because of COVID-19, teams shot on their own range and are six-feet apart and the coaches meet to exchange scores. For example, Manheim coach Steve Waddington met with Wilson’s coach at the Riveria restaurant in Denver. 9. Trey Grube was on fire, notching 26 points and nailing six 3-pointers. Wyatt Becker registered ten points. Central coach Charlie Fisher said Grube was locked-in. “Trey, that dude can lite it up,” Fisher said. “He is hard to stop when he is feeling it.” Manheim led 13-12 after one quarter, jumping to a 9-0 lead, but Fleetwood, on a 15-2 run, led 29-28 at halftime. MC was down five in the third and then went on a big run to go up by many as 16 points.

“We definitely started dictating the game,” Fisher said. “We want to dictate the momentum and tempo.” On Jan. 13, the Barons lost another close game, 59-56, to Lampeter-Strasburg. Manheim led 1513 after one quarter and the score was tied at halftime, 23-23. L-S used a 19-12 scoring advantage in the third quarter to pull away. MC had balanced scoring with Grube’s team-high 15 and Becker, Snavely and Judd Novak each netting 12.
