Give your favorite local business a boost by voting for it to win a Manheim Chamber award.

“Every year at our annual membership meeting, we celebrate the past year of business in Manheim. For the past four years, this has included celebrating the recipients of our Chamber Awards,” said Kristie Schmid, executive director

of the Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce. “The categories vary by year, but they are always acknowledging the hard work and effort that’s put into creating, managing and sustaining business. We are proud of our business community and what they bring to the table here in Manheim.”

This year’s categories include “Spirit of Manheim,” focusing on the “biggest cheerleader for Manheim,” Schmid said. “Social Media

Champ” will honor a business that has used its social media accounts to grow its business and stay on top of trends. “Cornerstone of Manheim” will recognize a Chamber member that has longevity in the community and has supported Manheim by creating jobs and fostering economic growth. “New Business of the Year” will acknowledge a business that has thrived in Manheim for three years or less.

The voting is open to members of

the public, who can place votes by emailing info@manheimchamber.com by Wednesday, Feb. 8. Any Manheim Chamber member business is eligible to win. A full list of members can be found by searching the business directory at www.manheimchamber.com.

Schmid said the award categories change each year depending on what best describes the current membership. “This year the Chamber has members that have been around since the beginning and some that have recently chosen to open in Manheim,” she explained. “We have some that have taken the time to volunteer and who spend a great deal of time to help behind the scenes for the greater good of all our members. And, we have some that are putting Manheim ‘on the map’ through their social media.”

Business is booming in Manheim, she noted, and the awards offer a way to honor that growth. “Manheim is definitely in a revitalization period,” she remarked. “We now have enough retail and food establishments that locals and visitors can spend a good deal of time in town. These businesses are owned by your friends, family and neighbors. Supporting them is so important and makes a huge impact on our local economy.”

The Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce moved locations last August and is now housed at Supply, 280 S. Oak St. “We are really enjoying all the space has to offer, including event space for our 2023 programs and events,” Schmid said. “ We are getting ready to launch a new events website. This will feature our members that have businesses where you can shop, dine or attend an event. We are consistently growing and looking for ways to help spread the word about what Manheim has to offer.”

Manheim-based Stiegel Glassworks creates the Chamber awards each year. Winners will be announced at the Chamber’s virtual annual meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 15, and will be announced to the public afterward.

Since 1937, the Women’s Club of Manheim has been striving to promote friendship, community service and civic responsibility. As the organization celebrates its 85th year, it continues to thrive, said Shayna Sharp, club member. “ We’re very passionate about what we do,” she stated. “We know what we do is important to the community.”

The club is active throughout the school year, meeting on the second Tuesday of most months at 7 p.m., and the location varies. “ We had been meeting at St. Paul’s Church on Main Street, but we’ve started meeting at some local businesses,” Sharp shared, noting that meetings have been held at Glasshouse Wineworks in Manheim as well as at Twisted Sisters Ice Cream and Handmade Chocolates. “Meeting at other locations has been a way to support local businesses and be a little more welcoming to new members. We’re always looking for new members.”

Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley recently launched the Sapphire Fund. The Sapphire Fund will financially support the wishes of children with a cancer diagnosis in the Philadelphia, Delaware, and Susquehanna Valley region.

The largest number of wishes granted each year by the chapter are for children with a cancer diagnosis. On average, 60% of the wishes

granted each year will now be funded by the Sapphire Fund. Annually, $800,000 is needed to financially support these wishes. The name of the Sapphire Fund was inspired by the birthstone for the month of September, as September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

Despite approaching the finish line, the Manheim Central swimming teams find themselves in rough water after losses to Ephrata, Elizabethtown and LampeterStrasburg have the Barons a combined 1-11.

The loss to Lampeter-Strasburg happened on the 17th with the boy’s side coming ever so close in a 76-74 loss while the Lady Baron were outdistanced, 110-39.

Ashley Mellinger accounted for two of Central’s three wins on the girls’ side, claiming the 100-breaststroke and 200 IM. Chloe Enck added a win in the 50-free.

For the boys it was Bryce Garber pulling double duty with wins in the 100-free and 100-back. Chase Kirchner added a win in the 100-breastroke to go along with Manheim’s 200- and 400-free relay wins.

Manheim Central dropped their January 12th meet opposite Ephrata with the

Garber Wins Two In 76-74 Loss to L-S

boy’s falling 109-55 and the girl’s 121-17.

The Barons first meet of 2023 took place on the 10th with the boys falling to Elizabethtown, 107-56, and the girls, 127-33. Mellinger collected the only two wins for the Lady Barons, taking the top spot in the 100-breaststroke and 100-fly. Anderson Pilsner (200 IM) and Garber (100-free) split the two wins on the boy’s side.

WRESTLING

The wrestling team hit the ‘dual match’ tournament circuit the last few weeks, going 3-2 at the Indian Duals on the 7th and 2-1 at the Mifflin County Duals on the 14th. Manheim’s wins on the 7th came over Panther Valley (6015) and Stroudsburg (37-21) plus a 33-33 ‘criteria’ win over Lehighton Area thanks to most match wins. Their losses were to Whitehall (40-36) and Honesdale (45-19).

One week later the Barons topped South Western (4821) and Tyrone Area (39-27) but missed an undefeated day

thanks to a 46-19 loss to Mifflin Country.

In between Central posted a 35-28 win over Elizabethtown on the 11th. Manheim won seven of the 13 matches, including four straight that turned a 28-18 deficit into the 35-28 win. Brett Barbush (160), Brodie Daugherty (172), Rocco Daugherty (189) and Noah Templin (215) were responsible for the match sealing run. Blake Fasnacht (106), Braxton Keiffer (113) and Cody Hess (132) kept Central in the match with their pinfall wins.

Manheim Central added a lopsided 63-6 win over Garden Spot on the 18th. Jake Hess (138), AJ Hondru (145), Barbush (160), Brodie Daugherty (172), Templin (215) all earned pinfall wins while Fasnacht (106), Luke Gibble (120) and Hess (132) enjoyed forfeit wins. Braxton Keiffer added a tech fall win at 113, Logan Forrest a major decision at 152 with Rocco Daugherty (189) and Barrett Keiffer (126) tacking on standard decisions.

BOWLING

The bowling team suffered their second loss of the season on January 6th, falling to Hempfield 7-0. The Barons did counter that loss with matching 7-0 wins over Lancaster Mennonite on the 5th and Garden Spot on the 11th.

AIR RIFLE

The air rifle team hit a bump in their march to the top of the league standings courtesy of a 497-496 loss to Manheim Township on the 10th. Nate Sauder and Aubrey Myers posted perfect scores while Kyria Martin and Natalia Winkler just missed with their 99s. Caleb Creviston completed the top five with a 98.

Manheim got back to winning on the 12th, topping Ephrata 493-489. Martin, Creviston and Winkler gave the Barons a trio of 99s while Sauder and Myers posted 98s.

Another trio of 99s gave Central a 491-488 win over Conestoga Valley on the 5th. Martin, Sauder and Winkler compiled that trio while Andrew Waddington (97) and Genna Eberly (97) rounded out the top five.

The Barons needed their

top seven shooters in their January 17th showdown with Garden Spot that ended with Central on top 691-690. Martin, Sauder, Eberly, Creviston and Kyler Groff all had 99s with Gabby Fittery and Winkler completing the win with their 98s.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Most teams riding a sixgame winning streak would have difficulty pointing to the most important game or two in that run but that is not the case for the Lady Baron hoopsters. Manheim can point to the January 6th win over Ephrata and the January 17th win over Warwick as the two most important for the simple reason...they are the two teams directly below Central in the Section Two standings.

Those two wins combined with victories over Solanco, Spring Grove and Fleetwood have the Lady Barons atop those Section Two standings and sporting a 12-3 overall mark.

Against Ephrata it was a slow and steady approach that earned a 31-17 win. Manheim outscored the Lady Mountaineers in all but one quarter to build that 14-point final margin. Maddie Knier netted a team high 15 points.

A slow start on the 10th saw Manheim trail Solanco 72 after the opening frame but a 40-26 run over the final three quarters gave Central a 42-34 win. Knier posted another 15-point game while Abbie Reed hit double digits with 10 points.

One night later the Lady Barons used a 20-7 second quarter spurt to turn a tight one-point affair into a cakewalk. Add in the 28-16 second half edge and you get a 62-38 victory over Spring Grove. Knier dropped 28 in the win while Reed added 16 points.

Manheim continued their venture outside the L-L, posting a 65-25 win over Fleetwood on the 14th. Knier (25points), Reed (12-points) and Kaylie Kroll (10-points) helped propel Central to a double-digit scoring edge in three of the four quarters.

Knier continued her hot stretch with a 26-point effort that helped Manheim Central to a 52-25 win over Warwick

on the 17th. The Lady Barons were able to coast through the second half thanks to a 29-9 cushion at halftime. Kroll added 13-points in the win.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

The boys’ basketball team is just as hot, riding a sevengame winning streak to a 12-2 overall record and a first-place spot in the Section Two standings.

The Barons needed overtime to vanquish Warwick on the 17th, using a 15-8 edge in the extra frame to collect a 67-60 win. Manheim opened with a 12-9 edge but ended up in overtime thanks to a 43-40 Warwick edge over the final three quarters. Trey Grube netted 21 while Aaron Enterline (11) and Zach Benner (10) also reached double-digits.

No extra session was needed for Manheim’s 67-57 win over Fleetwood on the 14th, just a strong second half surge. That surge was needed with Central trailing 39-35 at the break. Grube and his 23

points led a second half charge that turned that fourpoint deficit into a 10-point win.

Manheim’s January 11th trip to York County ended with the Barons claiming a 67-54 win over Spring Grove.

Sam Witmer stepped to the front of the line with a 20point night while Grube (17points) and Enterline (14points) helped fuel a 44-31 second half burst.

Manheim Central nabbed an easy win on the 6th, topping Ephrata 54-37. Central picked up the bulk of their margin thanks to a 20-8 edge in the second and third frames, filling in with a 34-29 advantage in the first and fourth frames. Grube was the lone player in double figures with 25-points.

Central’s January 10th tilt opposite Solanco was never really in doubt with Grube dropping 31 points pushing Manheim to a 28-16 halftime lead on their way to the 5843 win.

Looking back on a Winter Field Day event, Ralph Hess, president of Red Rose Repeater Association (RRR), recalled a story about a gentleman, a newcomer to the hobby, who helped him set up antennas for amateur, ham for short, radio operation. “We got the antenna hooked to the radio, and I threw out my call sign and a (ham) got back to me from Poland,” said Hess, who added that the gentleman was astounded. “He said, ‘That piece of wire I just touched let you talk to Poland?’” Hess relayed. Hess used an internet program to confirm the contact.

The 2023 event, presented by a partnership between RRR and the Winter Field Day Association, will be held at the Welsh Mountain Community Center and Park, 564 Sandmine Road, New Holland. The group will begin to set up antennas at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28, and the event will officially begin at 2 p.m. Winter Field Day will end at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 29. The event is held for 24 hours to include radio operators from

all time zones. Newly licensed and inexperienced operators as well as those with an interest in the hobby are encouraged to attend. There is no cost to participate, and visitors are welcome to drop in anytime and bring sleeping bags or cots if they plan to stay overnight in the center.

Several seminars will be offered during the event. At 10 a.m. on Jan. 28, Amateur Radio Emergency Services (ARES) will give a presentation. Hess noted that the organization practices emergency drills for the closed Three Mile Island and the functioning Peach Bottom nuclear power plants because ham radios continue to operate when cellphones cannot and in areas where cell services may be limited.

Additional workshops will instruct attendees in how to build three types of twometer antennas and one HF (high frequency) antenna. There is a nominal fee to build antennas to cover the costs of materials.

Lancaster County amateur radio operators who are members of Red Rose Repeater Association and the Winter Field Day Association will operate for 24 hours straight to offer the public an introduction to the hobby.

The women’s club holds a variety of fundraisers throughout the year, including hosting a stand at the Manheim Farm Show, organizing the Holiday Tour of Homes and selling Christmas cookies in early December. The group’s annual designer purse bingo will be held on Saturday, Feb. 4, and the event is sold out.

“One hundred percent of everything we bring in goes back to the community,” Sharp commented, adding that the club contributes more than $10,000 annually through programs including Secret Santa for children in Manheim. The club also awards grants of up to $1,000 to nonprofit organizations serving Manheim and the Manheim community. The application for 2023 grants is now

open, with a submission deadline of Wednesday, March 15. More information and an application can be found on the club’s Facebook page or by emailing Kathy Bower at wcgrants@gmail.com.

The club also supports a variety of Manheim Central School District programs and activities, including post prom and the Run for Fitness, and sponsors a Girl of the Month at the high school. Scholarships are provided by the club for senior girls pursuing postsecondary education. “We usually give out three $1,000 scholarships, but in the past two years, we’ve been able to give out five,” Sharp said.

Members of the Women’s Club range from women in their 30s to retirees. “We have a handful of lifetime members,” Sharp remarked, explaining that lifetime members are over the age of 75. She encourages anyone with an interest in helping the Manheim community to consider joining the Women’s Club. “We offer a variety of different

activities, and there’s something for every interest,” Sharp stated. “You can pick and choose what you’d like to help with. Some of our members come to every meeting, and some don’t come to any meetings, but they help when they are able to help.”

Presently, there are 50 licensed ham radio operators in the New Holland ZIP code and more than 1,500 in the county. Hess believes a chance to converse internationally attracts many to the hobby. “We will be operating under our club call sign, so … anybody can come up and operate,” he said. “I can almost guarantee we will find someone outside the U.S. to talk to.”

Hess noted that many visitors react positively to hearing a voice from another country over the radio. “People’s faces just light up,” he said.

To learn more about the YMCA’s community development work, contact Joe Kirkenir at jkirkenir@rosesymca.org.

Established in November of 2021, the YMCA of the Roses is the result of a merger between the YMCA of York and York County and the Lancaster Family YMCA. Since 1854, the YMCA has been serving more than 60,000 people a year in the region through programs in the focus areas of youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

More information about the YMCA can be found at www.rosesymca.org.

YMCA Waives Joining Fee

To give everyone in the community a chance to live their healthiest lives possible, the YMCA of the Roses is waiving its join fee for all memberships in January. In addition to getting access to wellness facilities across York and Lancaster counties, YMCA of the Roses members get discounts on many YMCA programs.

Programs that are discounted include L.E.A.N., new threemonth healthy lifestyle program; personal training for individuals and small groups; swim lessons for families and individuals of all ages; and youth development programs, summer camp, and youth sports. The YMCA also offers financial assistance through its Membership For All program so that anyone can be a part of the Y family.
