Night To Shine To Offer Prom Experience BY CATHY MOLITORIS

In 2014, the Tim Tebow Foundation began hosting Night to Shine, providing a prom night experience for people with special needs. At the time, Joell Ketcham’s son was graduating from high school. “He attended his school’s prom and the IU 13 prom, and I said to his aide, ‘We need to do something like this once people are out of school,’”

Ketcham recalled. She reached out to the foundation and started the work to bring the program to Lancaster County. This year’s Night to Shine will be held in two parts. A Shine-Thru Parade will be held on Thursday, Feb. 10, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at LCBC Manheim, 2392 Mount Joy Road, Manheim, followed by an at-home virtual experience on Friday, Feb. 11, beginning at 6 p.m. See Prom pg 5

Making A Difference, One Hoodie At A Time BY CATHY MOLITORIS

tudents in Michael Esch’s entrepreneurship class at Manheim Central High School earned real-world experience in marketing and selling a product, supporting a charity, and even writing and performing a rap song. As a class, the students designed and sold school spirit hoodies to raise money for Oceana, an organization dedicated to protecting the world’s oceans. Senior Barend Oostdam create a rap that was performed during morning announcements. Thanks to his efforts and those of his classmates, the class raised $5,500 for the charity in the process. “The rap focused on the due dates for the sale and the importance of the organization we were supporting,” Barend noted, adding that he believes Oceana’s work lobbying for new laws and focusing on vulnerable areas is making a difference.

on the spreadsheet was a challenge, but it was a lot of fun,” she said, adding that she often stayed after school to work on the project. This year presented some unique challenges for the class, Esch noted, including global shortages of inventory and supplies and having to pick and pack orders in Esch’s temporary classroom while the high school is under construction. Still, the class persevered and together they sold about 875 hoodies, generating $22,000 in sales. The profit of just over $5,000 will be donated to Oceana. Esch said he’s proud of the leadership skills demonstrated by the students throughout the project. “We had students who helped on Saturdays and after school,” he stated. “Some of them were super conscientious to make sure it all came together. It takes maturity and responsibility to pull off a project like this.”

The tale of Aria and Ducky began on a seashore boardwalk when Aria, who is now 7, was only 18 months old and she received a stuffed duck as an arcade prize. Aria, who lives in Manheim, often told her grandfather, André Renna of Leola, of her adventures with her best friend Ducky and of the activities they had planned.

The 10th-, 11-, and 12th-grade students in the class chose to sell hoodies after voting as a class on a variety of proposed items. In the past, students in the class have sold T-shirts, hats, travel mugs, and more, raising a total of $33,000 for charity since 2009. This is Esch’s first time teaching the course. The entrepreneurship project was the vision of Edward Herbert, who retired last year. “The goal of this class is for the students to experience in a small way what it’s like to operate a real-life business from start to finish,” Esch stated. They did everything from creating the hoodie design to marketing and selling to the Manheim Central School District community, handling money, creating a spreadsheet of orders, and working with Elizabethtown Sporting Goods for supplies. Junior Morgan Kreider was instrumental in the project. “Keeping all of the information straight

He researched the world of publishing and opted to self-publish. “The Adventures of Aria and Ducky: The Surprise Birthday Party,” has been out since June of 2021. It is available at the Lancaster Barnes and Noble and on Amazon. André has done several readings at local schools and eateries, and he has donated books to places children frequent such as Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development. He noted that people who purchase the book often want it signed by him and Aria and Ducky. “People send me pictures with messages that say, ‘This is me reading it to my granddaughter.’” One message said, “I read it again the other day to my 4-yearold, and he was sad when Ducky was sad.”

“The Adventures of Aria and Ducky: The Surprise Birthday Party” by André Renna

“I thought (the book) might be something Aria could have for a long time,” said André, who noted that Aria’s school principal sat Aria beside her at the front of the classroom and read the book to the girl’s classmates. “That is priceless for a kid,” he said. André noted that the only downside of having written a book is the requests for a sequel. “Everyone wants us to write a second book,” he said, “but Aria has to come up with the story.” Readers who wish to learn more about the book may visit www.ariaandducky.com.

Something happened at the party,’” said André, who reported that Aria’s pet cat, Jasmine, had somehow ruined the party. “But Ducky was OK,” Aria assured André, “because he knows we really love him.” Enchanted by the story, André told the tale to his wife, who suggested he write it down. “I said, ‘I am not a writer, I am a retired health care executive and industrial engineer,’” recalled André, sharing that his wife replied, “Just do it.” “So I did it,” said André, who shared his written version with friends and received praise for it. His sister, who is a teacher, proofread it for him, and with a clean copy, he decided to take the next step and find an illustrator. Aria’s father, suggested André One day, when Aria was about 5 1/2, André was pushing her on the swing at his house, and she began to tell him a story about the birthday party she was planning for Ducky. After each push, André had to wait for Aria to come back to hear the next detail about the party. “She would say, ‘Well, Ducky and I …’ and then, whoosh, she was gone away,” recalled André. Manheim had a rough night shooting, going 2-for-22 on 3-point attempts. Trey Grube paced the Barons with 10 points and Judd Novak added eight. After losing their first two games of the season, the Barons had won 10 games in a row, prior to the Donegal loss. Fisher said the loss serves as a wakeup call and illustrates that Manheim must be focused. “It didn’t look like we weren’t ready,” Fisher said, “but when the

Daughtery got a win at 145 in his first match back after time off. AJ Hondru held his opponent to a regular decision at 152, not allowing another point after the first period (he was losing 7-1 after the first). “And of course, our big guys coming through at 215 (Groff) and 285 (Fittery),” Eno said. “This team’s competitive. We have a high ceiling, and we were ready to compete Thursday night.” The Barons competed in the Huskie Duals at Mifflin County High School on Jan. 15. Eno said Manheim wrestled some tough competition. Individually, there were some great performances. Barbush continues to look great, Eno said. He was 3-0 on the day. Keiffer continues to show why he’s one of the strongest 113pounders out there. Warner earned a great win over Southwestern. Taylor Bloom added 3 wins. “We’re continuing to see improvements from our young lightweights (Luke Gibble and Leo Bonnano),” Eno said. “Our middleweights are gaining experience every bout and Rocco Daugherty is on the verge of a breakthrough at 189 pounds. I’ve said it before, but we’re getting better every outing. And we’ll continue to put in the work.” For photos, see www.town lively.com BOWLING With Elco only having three varsity bowlers, Manheim rolled to a 7-0 victory on Jan. 13, raising their record to 7-2. Sophomore Landen Statts had a 512 at Cain’s Lanes. Jesse Hurst and Ethan Howard shot a 540 and 529, respectively, but both shot two games in junior varsity. Aaron Vogel shot a 524 and Holly Hunt had a 462. “I was pleased with the fact they bowled like it was a real match,” Barons’ coach Alan Slides said. “They worked on their all-around games and improving their games.”

The 200 freestyle relay was Pilsner, Garber, Moreno, and Caleb Bower. First place winners included Pilsner (200 IM and 100 fly), Garber (100 free and 100 backstroke) and Schwebel in the 100 breaststroke. “Indeed,” Barons’ coach Heather Fittery said, “It was a memorable occasion for all Baron swimmers.” In the Baron Invitational on Jan. 15, Pilsner set a personal-best in the 100 backstroke. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Junior Maddie Knier had another incredible performance at both ends of the court in a 65-42 victory over Elco on Jan. 14. Needing three points to reach the exclusive 1,000 point club, she finished with 30 points and nine rebounds. Knier is only the sixth player in Manheim’s girls’ basketball history to reach this milestone. “It is an absolute testament to her work ethic,” Barons’ coach Tyson Hayes said. “She just outworks everyone. It couldn’t happen to a nicer person.” Hayes said Knier has elevated her game in all three levels. “They say the mid-range game is dead, but Maddie has brought it back to life,” Hayes said. “She has worked in the weight room to get stronger and absorb contact.” He said the key to the Elco win was balanced scoring. When the Raiders keyed on Knier, it opened up opportunities for others to score. Rachel Nolt added 16 points. “They are just really getting good and buying in,” Hayes said about his squad. “This team has a chance to be something special and do something that other girls at Manheim Central haven’t done.” The Barons beat Donegal 52-33 Photo by Bob Diller Manheim’s Trey Grube goes to the basket on Donegal’s Dean- on Jan. 18, good for their fifth dre White for two of his team-high 10 points in the Barons’ straight win. Would like to have a few more 100s and 99s. Tuesday’s match against CV was a much better day for us with a 497. With that said, having an off day can be expected.
