Manheim Central To Present “Robin Hood” BY CATHY MOLITORIS
They say the show must go on, and that’s something Manheim Central High School students are taking to heart. When the pandemic forced the shutdown of their fall play, “Robin Hood,” in November, it was time to get creative. “We attempted to offer several
modes to view the performance, including a live and a streamed production,” said Amber Friel, director. “However, those could not be fulfilled because of the pandemic and public safety guidelines. Our team was committed to giving these students a performance and leaned on many members of our school community to help us bring this dream to life.” See “Robin Hood” pg 5
Inviting teens to check out Teen Central are Janelle Heying (left), executive director, and Brenda Hershey, kitchen coordinator.
Providing A Safe Space For Teens “Our mission is to minister to the youths of Manheim,” said Janelle Heying, executive director of Teen Central. “We want to provide spiritual development and quality life experiences for teens.” Teen Central, located at 15 S. Wolf St., offers drop-in programming four days a week for middle school and high school students. “We start with a snack and then have about an hour to 90 minutes of time for the kids to hang out,” Heying stated. “They love playing dodgeball or, if the weather is nice, they’ll play kickball outside.” The facility features basketball courts, air hockey, foosball and more. “We will also put out craft supplies for kids who want to do
that, or we let kids just hang out and talk for the first hour or so,” she noted. “Then, we pull everyone together and we do a Bible study.” Lessons may range from small group discussions to games or videos, she said.
“My goal is always to provide a safe and welcoming space for teens to come in, where they know they are always going to be loved and accepted,” Heying said. Each session ends with a free meal for the teens. “Our cook is wonderful,” Heying remarked about Brenda Hershey. “We are so
blessed to have her. She puts a lot of heart and love into everything she makes.” Along with the basic framework of each session, Teen Central offers teens opportunities to learn new skills. “One part of our mission is to open kids up to life skills,” Heying said. “ We have a sewing room, and we teach them basic sewing skills. Before COVID, we would have them help prep food in the kitchen. When we have projects to do or things to install here, we invite the students to get involved and use power tools or see how things are put together.” The organization also hosts field trips for teens regularly, including snow tubing, bowling and roller skating.
Ruhl’s Church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, wants to spread love while warming hearts and stomachs. The church will hold a free soup drive-through on Saturday, Jan. 30, from 10 a.m. until noon or until the soup runs out. This is the first time the church will be holding an event featuring free soup but not the first time the church has offered a drive-through fo r m a t . T h e o r g a n i z e r s w e r e

Little ones are invited to make music at Florin Church of the Brethren during the Little Notes music ministry. The program is held from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. on the second, fourth and fifth Thursdays of the month at the church, 815 Bruce Ave., Mount Joy, and is open for children up to kindergarten age and their caregivers. “Little Notes is a program we offer to introduce children to music,” said Jan Chavez, program director. “We’ll get out a variety of musical instruments for the children to play with. I’ll play some sing-along songs. I like to include songs they know and pepper in some new ones for them to learn.” The program, which is free, also features play time and other activities. “We’ll have parachute time and snack, and I might play a DVD or do a simple craft or coloring page with the children,” Chavez stated. To stay as safe as possible during COVID-19, the program is held in a large space where participants can spread out, and all snacks are individually wrapped. Chavez also sanitizes all instruments between sessions. Chavez started the program two years ago as a way to give back to the church she’s belonged to her whole life and to provide a musical opportunity for preschoolers. “I have a little bit of background in music. I grew up taking piano lessons, and I was in the orchestra,” she noted, adding that she enjoyed taking her two children to music programs when they were young. Participants in Little Notes can expect a laid-back atmosphere, she remarked, adding, “It’s a very informal, relaxed environment where the kids can just be and do and have fun and learn. They can touch the instruments, hear how different ones sound and learn what their names are. It’s also a time for the adults to meet other people and socialize.” Although the program typically runs during the school year, Chavez said she plans to extend it through the summer this year to make up for missed weeks due to school closures. She emphasized that she relies on the support of Jodi
Kerlin, church secretary, to help her run the program. She also said everyone is welcome to attend with their children, whether they live in the Mount Joy area or not. “This is something fun for anyone with little kids,” she said. “I invite anyone to come and check it out any week.” For more information on the program, readers may call Chavez at 717-715-5977 or the Florin Church of the Brethren office at 717-6531202 or search for “Little Notes at Florin Church of the Brethren” on Facebook.

Following the success of its free ham dinner drivethrough in December, Ruhl’s Church will host a free soup drive-through on Saturday, Jan. 30.
The event is first-come, firstserved, so no reservations are needed. “There will be different-sized containers, and the portion will be determined by family size,” Gray remarked, adding that soup also makes a great donation to a family in need. “If you do not eat soup, then prayerfully consider someone who would be blessed by such a gift during these challenging times.” Gray said organizers hope to hold free soup events on a regular basis. The next one is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 20.
Teen Central from pg 1 As a nonprofit, Teen Central relies on donations from churches, businesses and individuals. The organization typically holds a fall fundraising banquet but had to cancel that in 2020. On average, about 30 students participate in Teen Central activities on a typical night, but upwards of 85 students are registered with the organization. While some things have changed at Teen Central due to the pandemic, including daily temperature checks, required masks and social distancing, one thing has

remained constant: “My goal is always to provide a safe and welcoming space for teens to come in, where they know they are always going to be loved and accepted,” Heying said. “I want this to be a safe space for the students to be themselves. No matter what is going on outside these walls, when they come in here, they know they are loved by God. They will be welcomed, and their needs will be met.” For more information on Teen Central, including weekly schedules, readers may visit https://teencentral manheim.org/.

inspired by a free takeout ham dinner offered during the church’s drive-through Nativity in December, said organizer Kris Gray. “The free ham dinner was so well received that we wanted to offer another free food event to share the love of Jesus with our community,” Gray noted. “Homemade soup is a great comfort food and perfect for warming up during these cold days.” The event will feature chicken corn noodle soup. “A family in the church makes the soup using an old church recipe,” Gray said. Refrigerated containers of soup will be distributed to anyone who attends the event and will be delivered directly to cars. “You can drive up to the carport at the church to receive your soup,” she explained. “You will not even need to leave your car. Just heat the soup up at home when you are ready to serve it.”

LMHS Student Named Questbridge Scholar
Erb-Hayward
Manheim Resident Will Attend Brown University BY ANN MEAD ASH
Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) senior Eden Addisu had been receiving emails from Questbridge, a nonprofit scholarship program for exceptional students from low-income backgrounds, for quite some time; however, she had not seriously considered applying to the organization. But during the COVID-19 quarantine, Addisu had more time than she might have had school been meeting on campus. “I thought, ‘Why not?’” said Addisu. The application process for the Questbridge College Match program has been called rigorous. Addisu noted that the application includes four essays rather than just one and that the deadline in September of 2020 of each
year is earlier than most programs require. She completed her application for submission in early September 2020, and she learned on Oct. 20 that she was a finalist. More paperwork was required by Nov. 1, and on Dec. 1, she received the news that she was a scholarship recipient and had been matched with Brown University, her first choice for college. Addisu was elated. The Questbridge scholarship covers tuition, room and board, meals, books, and school supplies. Addisu will take part in a work study program during the school year, and she will be responsible for a summer contribution as part of the program. Addisu’s parents came from Ethiopia to the U.S. two years before she was born. Addisu
attended Kraybill Mennonite School in Mount Joy, and then came to LMHS as a freshman. She has been active in the International Students Association. Academically, Addisu has taken a number of Advanced Placement classes in subjects such as biology, chemistry, government and politics, world history, and U.S. history. These accomplishments strengthened her application. Outside school, Addisu enjoys working with children, and she teaches Sunday school at two area churches – the Ethiopian Evangelical church in Landisville and Worship Center in Leola. She has hopes of eventually becoming a pediatrician. Addisu chose Brown University because of the school’s offerings in her chosen area of See LMHS pg 5

Wreaths Across America LMHS from pg 4 study. “(Brown is) great for Posts Cleanup pre-med,” she said, noting that
“Robin Hood” from pg 1 Instead of a live performance, the school will offer a recorded version of “Robin Hood” that will be available to view at https:// manheimcentralhighschool. anywhereseat.com/channel.php until 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 30. The show brings the legend of Robin Hood to life with action, laughter, parody and more, Friel noted. It was important to find a way to showcase the efforts of the students involved in the production, she remarked, even when bringing a live audience into the auditorium wasn’t possible. “The students have worked hard to prepare for this show,” she said. “They received sword fighting lessons from Doug Wallace, an actor at the PA Renaissance Faire, and they learned English accents.” COVID-19 restrictions made it difficult to rehearse and get the
show ready, she noted, but the students persevered. “There were multiple complications because of quarantining and attempting to put on live theater within the constraints of a pandemic,” she explained, “but with technology, we were able to have students attend rehearsals safely.” The production was filmed by a Manheim Central High School teacher, Jon Charles, and a group of students from his video production class. It’s the first time the school has offered a production of this kind, Friel said. She encourages everyone to check out the free performance and added it wouldn’t be possible without the support of many people. “If it weren’t for the hard work and dedication of these students and my staff,” she stated, “this show could not go on.”

Wreaths Across America at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery will hold Operation Clean Sweep on Saturday, Jan. 30, at the cemetery. Volunteers are needed to help pick up over 40,000 live balsam wreaths for disposal. One wreath was placed on each grave during Wreaths Across America Day on Dec. 19, 2020, made possible by sponsorships from thousands of people. Returning the cemetery to its pristine state is a part of the Wreaths Across America’s program and mission to honor veterans. Volunteers are asked to attend an 8 a.m. process briefing on the plaza of the Pennsylvania Veterans’ Memorial located at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. Parking will be limited in order to clear paths for dump trucks and trailers. Volunteers are asked to park at The Community Club/Arrowhead Bar & Grill Parking lot, 9-65 Fisher Ave., Annville. A shuttle bus will begin operation at 7:30 a.m., and helpers will be returned to their vehicles after cleanup is complete. Anyone arriving to help later than 8 a.m. will be instructed to report to the memorial for directions. There is no minimum age for participants, as the cleanup may serve to teach future generations about honoring veterans. Children should be with their adults at all times. Volunteers should prepare for the weather. They should dress warmly in clothes that may get soiled and wear com-
fortable shoes. This is a very physical project, so community members should use their judgment when deciding whether to participate. No animals except service dogs are allowed on the cemetery grounds. Attendees are encouraged to bring long-poled leaf rakes or brooms, tarps, and plastic toboggans/sleds. The project requires lowprofile dump trucks, dump trailers, and trucks with low and long beds only. People should not bring triaxle trucks, pickup trucks, ATVs or motorized trail vehicles. See Wreaths pg 7
the school also provides an open curriculum, which she favors. “There are no general education requirements,” she said. “That will give me time to explore other things I am interested in.” Hoping to attend the Providence, R.I., school in person, Addisu has already connected with the Questbridge scholarship network, a group of students who applied for Questbridge scholarships and have Eden Addisu, a Manheim become acquainted via social resident and senior at media. Lancaster Mennonite Readers who would like High School, will attend to know more about LMHS Brown University on a may visit www.lancaster Questbridge scholarship mennonite.org. in the fall.

Barons Hold Off Spartans 46-43, Top Comets Led by Judd Novak and Cam Eberly each posting 10 points, Central had a great first half and held on for the win. Wyatt Becker and Matt Siegrist each had eight points and Trey Grube netted seven. MC also beat Penn Manor, 58-47 on Friday, Jan. 15. The Barons led 13-8 after the first quarter, 28-14 at halftime and increased the advan-
tage to 44-24 after three quarters. Grube had a team-high 19 points, including five 3-pointers. Logan Shull netted nine points, including two treys and Novak and Becker each posted eight points. The Comets led 6-4 when Fisher called a timeout. He told his troops they were a little sluggish and needed to compose themselves. They did. The Barons used defense to create turnovers, Fisher said. Manheim led by as many as 25 in the game. “Part of it was defense and rebounding and shooting exceptionally well,” head coach Charlie Fisher said about the win. “There was no rah-rah speech during that timeout. I just said they should expect more out of themselves. It is about making progress. I said, ‘Hey, let’s play our game.’ Shull’s nine points, that’s a big game for him.” SWIMMING The Lady Barons notched their first win of the season, beating Cocalico, 69-56, Saturday, Jan. 16. Manheim swim coach Heather Fittery said it was a team effort. She said Olivia Faulhaber, Makenna Enck and Chole Enck had great swims and noted that the relay team had big wins. Emersen Weaver, Samara Bucher, Alexa Galbreath and Faulhaber won the 400 free relay. “We scored points in several
events where we placed three or four swimmers,” Fittery said. “That helped the girls beat Cocalico.” Despite losing 85-53, Fittery said Manheim Central boys’ basketthe boys swam well against Cocaliball is clicking on all cylinders and is co, noting the Bode Sipel, Wyatt starting to win the close games, Kupres, Paetyn Knepp played a big something that eluded the squad role, as well as Finn Schmidhuber, last season. To help address food insecurity among students, The Giant Company recently introduced a new customer giving initiative to assist local public schools in the communities it serves. This initiative, aimed at addressing the issue of childhood hunger, enables school districts to use the funds to best serve their community and can be used to support meal programs such as covering outstanding student meal debt, expanding food distribution programs and building oncampus food pantries. Now through Sunday, Feb. 28, customers at Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores will be invited to round up their grocery purchase to the nearest dollar to donate to their local public schools’ food programs. The Giant Company will match the first $1 million donated by customers through the round-up program. Additionally, customers will be able to convert their Choice points into a donation. For every 100 points converted into Grocery Dollars via the Giant or Martin’s app, $1 will be donated to the initiative, and customers will still be able to use the grocery dollars for their own savings on their grocery bill. The Giant Company will match every Choice point converted up to an additional $500,000 donated through this new initiative. Funds will be distributed to schools in March. For more information, readers may email FeedingSchoolKids@crane communications.com.
