The Great Winter Warm-Up Kicks Off MCC Centennial By Chelsea Peifer

Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) is celebrating its 100-year anniversary in 2020, and the yearlong celebration opened with volunteers throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe making thousands of comforters during The Great Winter WarmUp events in January. The comforters are donated to people in crisis all over the world. In Lancaster County, volunteers gathered to knot comforters at sites

including Erisman Mennonite Church in Manheim, Garden Spot Village in New Holland, Lancaster Mennonite School - New Danville Campus, Mountville Mennonite Church, and the MCC East Coast Materials Resource Center in Ephrata. MCC was founded in 1920 by Mennonites and Mennonite Brethren groups that formed a committee to provide food and other aid to people affected by war and famine in southern Russia, which is present-day Ukraine. Today, MCC provides humanitarian See MCC pg 3

Erisman Mennonite Church in Manheim served as one of several Lancaster County host sites for The Great Winter Warm-Up, where volunteers throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe worked to make and knot thousands of comforters to donate to people in crisis around the world through Mennonite Central Committee (MCC). The Great Winter Warm-Up was the first of several events planned to celebrate MCC’s 100th anniversary in 2020.

While Lucas is a busy guy, he does not think of his work with the team in terms of job duties. “It’s a lot of fun doing this, he said. “We’re not just a team. It’s kind of like a family. We are that close. The Thunder began playing in the area in the fall of 2019 as part of the American Basketball Association (ABA), See Thunder pg 6

Everence Schedules Stewardship University 2020 By Ann Mead Ash

Lynette Morales, the Everence church relations representative who coordinates Stewardship University, wants Lancaster County residents to know that the yearly event is not just about money. “It is a day of holistic stewardship, said Morales, who noted that the workshops offered are designed to answer questions like: What does it mean to be a good steward of the Gospel? Or of the gifts God has given me?

Stewardship University 2020 will be held on Saturday, March 7, at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. Registration will begin at See Stewardship pg 7

Lynette Morales (right), Everence church relations representative and coordinator of Stewardship University, and Jazmine Rivera, administrative assistant with Mennonite Central Committee, one of the sponsors of the event, are hoping area residents will attend the many workshops offered by the holistic stewardship event on March 7 at Calvary Church.

The American Heart Association will host the 35th annual Lancaster Heart Ball. The gala will kick off American Heart Month on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 5:30 p.m. at the Lancaster Country Club, 1466 New Holland Pike, Lancaster. The theme will be “The Heart of the Forest.” The event will honor young congenital heart disease survivor Shiloh Moran of Mount Joy. Shiloh was only a few weeks old when she underwent open heart surgery to correct four congenital heart defects. Children born with critical congenital heart defects like Shiloh’s have a much greater chance to enjoy a long and healthy life than they could only a few decades ago thanks to the advanced detection and surgical interventions available today. Shiloh’s parents, Austin and Addie Moran, will share their story as part of the annual Open Your Heart appeal. The Lancaster Heart Ball will also include silent and live auctions, a special performance by American Music Theatre developed exclusively for the Heart Ball, dinner, musical entertainment and dancing. Funds raised

will support the American Heart Association’s mission to be a force for a world of longer, healthier lives through community education, public policy advocacy, health care quality improvement and investment in research. Barry Mitchneck, director of nursing for UPMC Pinnacle, will serve as the event’s chair. Business, health care and community leaders from across Lancaster County are invited. For more information, including sponsorship and ticket packages, readers may visit http:// lancasterheartball.heart.org or contact Bill Coder at bill.coder@heart.org or 717730-1736. Pictured on front: The Lan-

caster Heart Ball, scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 1, will include a live auction (left photo). The Moran family (right photo), including Addie and Austin and their daughter, Shiloh, who is a congenital heart disease survivor, will share their story at the event. The event will take place at the Lancaster Country Club.

relief in more than 50 nations. Offering comforters and blankets has been one of the ways MCC has provided relief resources since the end of World War II. According to MCC representative Linda Espenshade, the organization sent more than 53,000 comforters to people in need in 2018, with approximately 30,000 of those comforters coming from MCC supporters on the East Coast. “Each comforter is unique and conveys a message of compassion,” stated J Ron Byler, MCC United States executive director. “People who get these comforters realize they are getting something personal. Someone has chosen the fabric

and crafted each one with their hands. They understand this is a gift of love.” For The Great Winter Warm-Up, participants worked together to combine handmade comforter tops, warm batting, and sturdy backing fabric into durable comforters. The squares of fabric that make up the comforter tops had already been sewn together prior to the knotting sessions. At Erisman Mennonite Church, more than 80 volunteers worked together to complete a total of 111 comforters on Jan. 17 and 20. Janet Runion Patton, who leads the Sewing Circle that meets regularly at the church, said that the members of the group decided they would like to be a host site for The Great Winter Warm-Up because they had hosted a day for knotting comforters in 2018. Erisman’s Sewing Circle meets at the church, located at 8 S. Erisman Road, Manheim, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month. People of all ages and sewing ability levels - even novices wanting to learn - are welcome to attend. Anyone with interest or questions may call Janet at 717926-4008. “It’s very ecumenical,” said Janet, noting that participants in the group represent a wide variety of churches throughout the area. During The Great Winter Warm-Up, Janet’s husband, Charles Patton, played hymns and other music on the piano which filled the church sanctuary as people of all ages worked away, enjoying quiet conversation and fellowship and breaking at mealtimes for chicken corn soup and light refreshments. Diane Buckley-Maidt traveled from Ellicott City, Md., to participate at Erisman because it was one of the MCC centennial events she thought would best fit into her schedule for the year. “I got the email and thought it sounded like fun,” said Buckley-Maidt, who served with MCC in the 1980s in Louisiana as well as at the Ephrata headquarters. At the end of the event, Janet delivered the comforters to the MCC Material Resource Center in Ephrata. From there, the comforters will be distributed to people in need throughout the world as a tangible sign of compassion in whatever crisis they may be facing. For instance, comforters have been delivered to people in Syria, Iraq, Jordan, and Lebanon in recent years in the wake of war in Syria and other violence in the region. Resiliency. One of the great strengths of this year’s Manheim Central Boys’ basketball team is the Barons ability to rebound from a tough loss. Seven times this season the Barons have had leads in the fourth quarter and lost the lead and the game. The latest came Tuesday, Jan. 21 in a heart-breaking 50-49 loss to Lampeter-Strasburg. Central had a great third quarter, scoring 22 points to take a 41-35 lead into the final frame. The Barons led late in the fourth, but

Pioneers cashed in on a couple MC turnovers to take the lead. Central missed a few shots late to end the game. Trey Grube paced the Barons with 12 points. Wyatt Becker added 10. Barons’ coach Charlie Fisher said Judd Novak (seven points) had a huge third quarter on both ends of the court and Cam Eberly also made big plays. Losing late never feels good, but Fisher told his squad to keep their heads up. “I just told the guys we have to keep battling,” he said. “We have to keep playing hard. Keep getting better.” The Barons responded with a 71-64

overtime victory against Northern Lebanon Thursday, Jan. 23. MC controlled the action most of the game and hit some key shots in overtime. Grube, who netted a career-high 23 points, had 13 in the fourth quarter and overtime, including nailing a clutch 3-pointer. He finished with five treys in the contest. Eberly (11 points) and Becker (10 points) each made big plays down the stretch. Becker made a huge hustle play at the start of OT that allowed the Barons to get control, Fisher said. “The boys responded in overtime,” Fisher said. “We blew another lead and we just kept battling.” WRESTLING Will Bentencourt is a four-time champion at the Lancaster-Lebanon League Tournament, becoming only the fifth wrestler to achieve this feat. He also won Outstanding Wrestler honors for the third time. What makes the accomplishments even more impressive is that the senior was only a week removed from leg surgery and he still won the title at 126 pounds on a 10-3 decision against Lampeter-Strasburg’s Arik Harnish at Manheim Township High School on Jan. 24-25. “Will wrestled well in the finals, but you could tell he didn’t have all his power back,” Barons’ coach Billy Chamberlain said. “It says a lot about how tough he is; he’s probably the toughest kid I’ve been around.” The Barons, who entered as the two-time defending league tourney champions, finished 10th this year.

“We definitely set our expectations higher, but in the grand scale of things we placed as many guys as last year” Chamberlain said. “We just got a few higher places last year with four champions so you gain more team points.” Connor Zeamer was runner-up at 145 pounds and won the title of most pins (4) in least amount of time (7:00). He lost to Ephrata’s Kayde Althouse, who is ranked No.1 in District Three. “He (Zeamer) is wrestling really well right now,” Chamberlain said. “This is the time of year when you want things to start clicking.” Brett Barbush, a freshman at 195 pounds, took third place, beating the guy who beat him in the quarterfinals. Freshman Connor Beck captured fifth place at 113 pounds. He learned some lessons in the tourney. “The thing is, you’re a few mistakes away from a higher placement,” Chamberlain said. “He fixes a couple of things and he can place higher.” Maliki Rivera and Brandon Kheauangthirath both placed seventh. Earlier in the week, Manheim lost 51-17 to Lampeter-Strasburg on Monday, Jan. 20. But it was a match that Chamberlain believed his squad wrestled well and at least three bouts could have had different outcomes and swung momentum. Trailing 21-0, Barbush got MC on the board at 220. Other wins included Beck earning a technical fall at 113 pounds, Kheauangthirath with a 3-1 decision and Zeamer got a pin (3:00) at 145 pounds, but that’s all the wins the Barons could muster.

Central lost in a close match against rival Donegal, 38-28 on Wednesday, Jan. 22. Injuries played a factor in the outcome, but Chamberlain loved how his team battled. “I think the kids wrestled very, very well,” said Chamberlain, who noted that Rivera and Beck both avenged previous losses to Donegal wrestlers (Donegal tourney) in this match. Barbush, Kieffer and Kheuangthirath also won.

RIFLE On a low scoring day, Manheim defeated Garden Spot, 493-490 in New Holland Tuesday, Jan. 21. It only took 99’s by Hunter Shoop, Brayden Groff and Andrew Cunrod and a pair of 98’s from Anna Haldeman and Abbi Martin for the Barons to capture their ninth win of the season. Despite the low scores, Barons’ coach Steve Waddington said his team had a bit of bad luck with their targets.

are dealing with adversity. Star guard Laura Good is out of the lineup with a hand injury the senior suffered Jan. 17 against Cocalico. Missing her leadership, scoring and ballhandling on the court, the short-handed Barons came up just short against LampeterStrasburg, 40-30 on Tuesday, Jan. 21. Maddie Knier, Kassidy Michael and Rachel Nolt, combined for 27 points. Knier paced the Barons with 10 points. Central trailed 17-14 at halftime, but L-S outscored MC 16-8 in the third quarter to pull away. Playing their second game without Good, Barons coach Tyson Hayes said his squad ran

into an extremely fundamental and well coached team and lost 47-35 to Northern Lebanon on Jan. 23. Michael led Manheim with 16 points. “For the first time this year we have hit adversity,” Hayes said. “And adversity can be a good thing as long as we learn and grow from it. We were without Laura Good in both games right now so we have to adapt and find our new identity. “These losses have been completely on me and I have to coach better, and help get our team in a better position to win. We’ll be okay and we’re going to keep grinding.”

Alexa Galbreath dropped little over 2 seconds in 100 free (1:12.23) and Talia Galbreath dropped 1.5 seconds in 100 backstroke (1:32.50). BOWLING MC suffered a 7-0 (2,923 to 2,707) loss to Elizabethtown on Tuesday, Jan. 21, but Barons’ coach Alan Sides was not disappointed with his team’s effort. “It was a nonleague match with a Section One team,” he said. “I feel we held our own against a really good opponent. All in all I feel even though we lost that our team rose to the occasion.” Sides said MC rolled a 981 to pull out a tie with E-town in the third game. In the second and third game JV’s Josh Shaw and Ethan Howard moved up and bowled really well, he said. Manheim’s top bowler was Brandon Henry with games of 198-192-225 for a 615 series. “Josh had a nice 167 game and Ethan rolled games of 197 and 192,” said Sides. The Barons had one varsity bowler missing so Catey Sides moved up and rolled a 520 series, including a 192 first game. Austin Howard also rolled a 595 series with games of 200 and 219. On Thursday, Jan. 23 the Barons bounced back with a 7-0 victory over Lancaster Catholic with a team score 2,773. Henry led Baron bowlers with a games of 238-192-214 for a 644 series. Bowling over their averages were Joey Noble who rolled a 198-181-231 for a 610 series. Ethan Howard rolled games of 200164-207 for 571 series and Austin Howard had games of 161-192-236 for 589. “Our bowlers bowled really well, rebounding from the E-town match,” Sides said. “Our first and third games we had 910 and 995 total. Our team average entering the match was 880. It was an all-around well bowled match by the team.” GIRLS’ BASKETBALL For the first this season, the Lady Barons

I was pleased to have Abbi Martin in the top five with a 98 as this is her first year on the team as a junior.” The coach knows he needs more 100 scores in matches, and he believes his team is capable, as he’s seen it in practice. Hopefully, it transfers over to matches soon, he said. Waddington got his wish Thursday, Jan. 23 in a 495 - 485 win over Governor Mifflin. Ellie McCabe got the 100. Her brother, Gage, Haldeman and Cunrod finished with 99 scores. Shoop posted a 98 to round out the top five. “It was good to see a 100 show up; I’m looking for more,” Waddington said. “It was good to see E-town win over Ephrata. This put us back in first place for the time being.” SWIMMING The Baron boys were a few seconds away from a win Tuesday, Jan. 21 against Lampeter-Strasburg at Lititz Recreation Center, falling to the Pioneers, 71-70. “The meet was very exciting,” Barons’ coach Heather Fittery said. “It came down to the last relay. The difference could have been having all our boy swimmers (10) at the meet. We didn’t have everyone there.” Max Gehman won the 50 freestyle (0:22.58) and 100 free (0:51.87). Also gaining a win was the 200 free relay team consisting of Mason Bard, Finn Schmidhuber, Colton Faulhaber and Joseph Giambalvo with a time of 2:02.30. Fittery said several Barons had personal bests, including Luke Weaver, who won the 100 breaststroke with Schmidhuber and Wyatt Kupres placing second and third, respectively. All had personal best times for the season. Nathan Shearn had his best time in the 100 backstroke, shaving 2.5 seconds off his personal best time. On the girls’ side, L-S won 129-34, but there were several personal bests by Lily Redcay in the 100 breaststroke and Kaylin Jury, who dropped 14 seconds in the 500 free. The MC boys lost to Elizabethtown 110-50 on Thursday, Jan. 23. Gehman kept up his stellar swimming, winning the 50 freestyle (0:22.49) and 100 free (0:51.24). He was also part of the winning 200 medley relay team along with Shearn, Weaver and Kupres (1:58.70). Schmidhuber hit the wall first in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.47). Giambalvo dropped 14 seconds in 500 free (6:38.93) and Colton Faulhaber dropped about 7 seconds in 500 free (6:56.51). The girls lost 128-35 to E-town. Individually, there were some strong performances. Redcay dropped two seconds in the 200 free (2:27.62) and Chloe Enck dropped 4.5 seconds in 200 free (2:39.04).

opportunities to suit up and participate. On Jan. 5, local dentist Sean Moriarty, wearing jersey No. 13, left the bench for the court just before halftime. At halftime, a local dance team took to the floor to perform. The Thunder’s final home game is slated for Saturday, Feb. 15, versus the West Chester Wildcats, at 7 p.m. Malin was coaching basketball at Lititz Christian School, where Lucas was a student, when a fellow coach suggested she consider coaching for the ABA. Malin has coached basketball for more than a decade, and she has played the game nearly her whole life. At the age of 15, she was chosen as one of eight young women from Sweden to attend basketball high school. “We train, and we get graded in basketball,” explained Malin, who was chosen as a member of the team that represented Sweden in the world championships in Turkey in 1990. After high school, Malin moved to Israel to play semiprofessional ball while studying Hebrew. She returned to Sweden and continued her studies while working as a trainer for a team that played American football. Two of the team’s players were American, and when she played basketball against them, they suggested she play for a college team in the United States. “I got to go to Wilmington College to play basketball,” said Malin, who later transferred to the University of Delaware, eventually earning a degree in physical therapy and Jewish studies. She also got

married and moved to Lancaster County, where Lucas was born. The professional National Basketball Association developed out of the ABA in the 1960s. Well-known players, like Julius Erving, got their starts in the league. A few of the Thunder players are from Lancaster County. “Tyler Mercer, No. 35, is from Ephrata High School, and he is our youngest player,” said Malin of the 6-foot-4-inch power forward. Guard Nasir McFadden, No. 10, played for Thaddeus Stevens, where he averaged 21 points per game. Quentin Davis, who attended Lancaster Bible College, has been playing semiprofessionally in Argentina, but he plays for the Thunder during his breaks. Other players hail from Reading, Coatesville, and Philadelphia, while some are from as far away as Florida and Michigan. According to Lucas, Thunder games have been both close and exciting. “Last night we won by one point,” he said, referring to a Jan. 4 game against the Hub City Hogs in Hagerstown, Md. “Our point guard hit a last-second buzzer beater to win the game.” The home game on Jan. 5 was not low on excitement either, with the Thunder trailing for the entire first half and rallying just before the buzzer, but the shallow bench of the opposing Philadelphia Cannons team was a weakness Malin used to her advantage. Wearing the Cannons out, the Thunder triumphed 130 to 126 at the end of the game. For more information on the Thunder, readers may visit www.ephratathunder.com.

PASA executive director Hannah SmithBrubaker explored multiple ways the KDC and PASA could find efficiencies by working together more intentionally. SmithBrubaker served as KDC’s board president in 2015-16. KDC plans to host its board meetings at the new space and have more in-person time with its members, board members, and other partners. KDC can start moving Saturday, Feb. 1, and plans to be fully out of the Ephrata office by Sunday, March 1. KDC’s mailing address will remain 108F N. Reading Road, Suite 200, Ephrata, for now.

was interested in seeing financial plans and how to map myself, and my goal was to learn as much as I could,” said Rivera. “Some of the classes were really helpful and meaningful. It was really great to listen to the thoughts and ideas.” Attending the event spurred Rivera to have a few ideas of her own, which she shared with Morales. “(Rivera) said, ‘This is awesome, but where are the young people?’” recalled Morales. Not only did Rivera have suggestions for attracting millennials, she also thought MCC could aid the event in a variety of ways. “MCC has been instrumental in developing workshops,” said Morales, who said a larger number of young people are attending the event and that there is more diversity among the more than 400 who attend and the presenters. “(Rivera) said (things) I had been thinking, and she had connections that were instrumental,” said Morales, who added that Eastern Mennonite Missions and Landis Communities are among the local organizations that support Stewardship University’s mission. Readers who would like to learn more or register for the event may do so at www.steward shipuniversity.com. There is a cost to attend the workshops. A discount is available to those who register by Monday, Feb. 17, or to groups of five registering together. Individuals who have questions may call 717-653-6662 and ask for Morales or email lynette.morales@everence.com.

Exploring, Growing Together, a forum learning series at Lititz UMC, will continue its 2019-20 forum learning series, which aims to offer a safe learning environment in which to discuss and explore topics and beliefs. The group meets on Thursdays on the lower level of the church from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. On Feb. 6, 13, and 20, the group will discuss “Day of No Return” by Kressmann Taylor. Discussions will be led by Evie Bergey. The book tells the mid1930s story of a theological student who refused to preach Nazi doctrine and was denied ordination in the German Lutheran church. He fled to the United States, where he contacted Taylor so she could tell his story. “Day of No Return” is Taylor’s 1942 account of that true story, fictionalized to deceive the Nazis and protect “Karl Hoffman” and his family still in Germany. Now his subsequent life and true identity, which remained secret for the rest of Taylor’s life, are at last

8 a.m. followed by a time of worship, after which keynote speaker Hank Johnson of Harrisburg Brethren in Christ Church will speak on “Being the Body of Christ.” The opening will be followed by more than 30 workshops divided into 12 tracks, with three workshops per track. “We have a millennials track, a mental health track, a Bible and stewardship track, family and community, 55 and older, (and more),” said Morales. “This year the workshops are incredible,” she added. Among this year’s workshop titles are “Missions in Your Own Backyard,” “Combatting Human Trafficking,” “55 and Counting,” “Elevate Your Nutrition,” “Kingdom Entrepreneurship,” “Make Medicare an Easy Step,” and “Overcoming Burnout and Disappointment.” Morales pointed out that experts in specific fields will teach the workshops. “We have one called ‘ModernDay Lepers,’” she said, noting that the workshop will focus on integrating sex offenders who have come out of incarceration into a church community. Another workshop that Morales elaborated on will work to teach churches and families the best ways to respond to children with autism, ADHD, and developmental differences. She pointed out that one workshop will focus on the serious problem of depression and suicide among teenagers. Jazmine Rivera, administrative assistant/centennial coordinator with Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), one of the sponsors of the event, attended in 2018. “I
