Pick up your piece of the pie - or actually, the whole pie - when The Home on Ferdinand hosts its second annual pie auction. The event will be held on Friday, Feb. 10, at Landis Hall in the Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and a silent auction will run from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The pie auction will begin at 7 p.m.

“It’s a really fun night. It’s something unique and different,” said Nicole Milburn, house director for The Home on Ferdinand. “It’s fun to see the creativity of the community

and the people who made the pies, and it’s really fun to watch how much these pies go for.”

Pies are made and donated by local churches and community members. Proceeds from the pie auction and the silent auctionwhich will include gift cards, baked goods and other items from local businesses - will be used to fund programming at The Home on Ferdinand, a project of Manheim Community Life Group. The event will also feature Auntie Anne’s pretzels and Peters’ Barbecue pork dinners for purchase.

The Home on Ferdinand opened in November of 2021 and provides

transitional housing for women and children in need. Part of the program at the pie auction will include an update on the home’s progress since it opened.

We are growing,” Milburn stated. “We started with six rooms for the women, and we’ve been able to grow to make seven rooms.” She added that The Home on Ferdinand receives on average four calls a week from people looking to move in.

At the pie auction, one of the home’s former residents will speak about her experience at The Home on Ferdinand. “She’s going to share her story, and then I’m going to talk about how God has moved through the home, and I’ll be sharing stories of different ladies as well as updating everyone on our impact and mission,” Milburn remarked.

She said the home has exceeded expectations, providing stability and routine for the families to live in a safe place. “We’ve just seen so many beautiful relationships form from the home,” Milburn said. “The ladies really lean on each other. They have been a source of light to each other just as much as we are to them.” Family game nights are held regularly at the home, and one of the residents has taught some of the other mothers how to cook, Milburn noted, adding, “They have been sharing their gifts and their talents with each other. The relationships developing between the women has been an inspiring thing to watch.”

Proceeds from the pie auction will also be used to help Manheim Community Life Group expand its mission in the community. “The Home on Ferdinand is our first branch off of the group, and we want to continue to grow the home,” Milburn said. “The possibilities are endless of what we want to do.”

For more information on the pie auction, visit Manheim Community Life Group’s Facebook or Instagram page or contact Janelle Wenger at janellewenger93@gmail.com.

“We’re looking for all kinds of food, particularly staples like pasta, sauce, canned vegetables and canned meats,” said Lori Shenk, community outreach manager for Northwest EMS. She noted that the donation drive can accept some perishables, but arrangements must be made specifically with her for the donations due to lack of storage at the stations. Personal hygiene items and paper products will also be accepted for the drive.

The drive has been held since 2014, and over the years, it’s been very successful, Shenk stated. In 2021, the stations collected more than 1,800 pounds of food. Last year was a bit of disappointment, she noted, although the drive did yield nine very large boxes of food. “Nearly half of what we collected last year had to be discarded because it was out of date,” Shenk explained. Items will be delivered to the food banks at the beginning of March, so Shenk recommends that donations have a shelf life at least through the spring.

Items will be sorted by type, and the donations will be divided equally among the three food banks in the footprint served by Northwest EMS:

the Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown, the East Donegal/Conoy Christian Food Bank and the Manheim Central Food Pantry.

Holding a food drive is a natural extension of the services provided by Northwest EMS, Shenk remarked. “Our mission is to serve our commu-

nity,” she said. “We have a unique view on the needs in our community because we’re in people’s homes. We see the need every day. … Food banks are a great resource for the community. The food drive is an easy thing for us to do to contribute indirectly to the health and well-

being of the people we serve.”

The food drive will run through Tuesday, Feb. 28. Items will be delivered sometime during the first week in March. For more information on the food drive, contact Shenk at 717-371-8282 or lshenk@nwems86.org.

women of all ages and church affiliations to fellowship and grow together in our relationship with Jesus,” said Bonnie Messick, NSAC coordinator.

“Over 35 years of ministry, culture and society have changed, but this group offers women a relaxed and welcoming environment providing a sense of stability and community that is not as common today as when the program began.”

NSAC provides free child care for infants to prekindergarten children, so it’s especially beneficial for young mothers as a way to enjoy some adult interaction, Messick noted. However, the program is open to women of all ages.

“NSAC is not part of a larger program and is run independently by a committee of women who attend Chiques Church,” she explained. “The women attending (NSAC gatherings) come from many area churches, and (there are) even those with no current church affiliation.”

NSAC meetings begin with informal fellowship time with snacks, coffee and tea, followed by worship music organized and led by committee members, announcements and a brief devotional. “Following devotions, we welcome prayer requests and praises as we share with the group and join in prayer,” Messick said. “After prayer time, the morning’s speaker is introduced and shares on their topic for 45 minutes to an hour.”

Speakers range from professionals in the community to church members providing personal testimonies, and each year, NSAC also invites a local nonprofit organization to speak on its ministry during one of the meetings. “Each season NSAC features a new theme, which guides the speakers in their topic selections,” Messick shared. “This year the program is based on the theme ‘Created.’ We haven’t been created by chance, but with purpose. God has created us in His image to praise, honor and glorify Him.” While each speaker’s style is different, they all share the core beliefs of the Christian faith and most use Scripture as a basis for their talks, she said.

Above all, NSAC offers women the opportunity to take a break from their busy schedules to enjoy fellowship with other believers while being inspired by the speakers. “Neighbors Sharing and

Caring is all about relationships,” said Messick. “It’s a great way to develop relationships with other women of all ages as well as grow in your relationship with Jesus.”

No sign-up or preregistration is required to attend NSAC. NSAC meets in the fellowship hall at Chiques Church. In the case of inclement weather, NSAC follows Manheim Central School District, and if school is delayed or virtual, NSAC is canceled for the morning.

Upcoming NSAC meeting topics include “Is Your ‘Auto Pilot’ Malfunctioning?” with Joanne White on Feb. 7, Katie Leaman speaking about the organization Love INC on Feb. 14 and the choice of a Bible study or freezer meal preparation class on Feb. 28. For more information and a list of speakers and topics, visit www.chiqueschurch.com/nsac.

Lady Barons Snag Eighth Straight Victory

There are varying levels of ‘hot’ when talking about winning streaks in the sports world. How those levels are described is up for debate, what is not is that the Manheim Central girls’ basketball team would be perched decently high on that list of levels. After all, the Lady Barons have claimed eight straight and 14 of their last 15 games after opening the season 0-2. Add it all up and you get a scorching hot team that is 14-3 overall and 8-0 in Section Two action.

The two most recent games of that winning streak were over Elizabethtown and Conestoga Valley by a combined 69 points. The 56-23 dismantling of E-town happened on January 20th in Elizabeth-

town and despite the host Lady Bears holding a 12-9 lead after the opening quarter. Central flipped the game around with a 10-2 run through the second before using a 20-5 third quarter to extend their lead to 20 points. A 17-4 romp through the final eight minutes closed out the win on a high note.

Maddie Knier outscored Etown on her own, finishing with 28 points. Kaylie Kroll added 12 and Abbie Reed 11 with Payton Snyder cleaning up the final five points.

The good times continued on the 24th with a 62-26 win over Conestoga Valley. This time there was no hole to climb out of, Central took control early with a 22-4 opening spurt. The lead ballooned to 28 at the break and 30 heading into the final

frame before settling at 36 points.

Knier nearly outpaced CV on her own with a 22-point effort. Kroll added 18 points while Reed chipped in 13 points.

BOWLING

The bowling team posted a much needed win over Northern Lebanon on January 24th, using a 657 series from Landen Statts to cruise to a 7-0 victory. Asher Harris and Ethan Howard posted the same 203 high score but Harris closed with a 561 series and Howard a 547 series. Hailey Kowalski (477) and Aston Fritz (451) completed the scoring five.

The win was needed because the Barons had dropped their previous three matches. That included matching 5-2 setbacks to Conestoga Valley on the 18th and Warwick on the 20th. In between was a 7-0 loss to Cocalico with the Eagles winning all three games with a 2824-2569 pin edge.

RIFLE

Over on the rifle range, Central split their last two matches, putting them at 7-2 on the season and dropping the Barons into a first-place tie with Township.

The win came on January 19th by a 590-589 final over Governor Mifflin. Aubrey Myers and Nate Sauder led the way with 100s. Natalia Winkler posted the lone 99 while Andrew Waddington, Gabby Fittery and Alexa Hoffman secured the victory with a triple 97.

Manheim Central was tripped up on the 24th with Elizabethtown taking the match, 498-493. Kyria Martin and Kyler Groff joined Sauder atop the team leader board with all three registering a 99. Genna Eberly and Caleb Creviston rounded out the top five with matching 97s.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

“That one hurt,” was the simple description that Charlie Fisher, head coach for the boys’ basketball team, used when asked about his team’s 69-63 overtime loss to Elizabethtown on January 20th. The pain Fisher referenced came from battling back from a 20-6 first quarter deficit to force overtime only to fall flat in the extra frame and lose by six points.

“It all boils down the first eight minutes, the rest of the game shook out sort of what we were expecting it to do but when you spot a team 14…,” said Fisher. “Physically and emotionally we were spent and they weren’t, and that’s basically what it came down to.”

Central used an eight point edge in the second and a five point edge in the third to set the stage for a fourth quarter comeback. That comeback was completed with a 19-18

advantage only to have the Bears take the extra frame 9-3 and the game 69-63.

The silver lining in the loss came with Trey Grube’s game high 22-points. The senior drilled five three-pointers, pushing his career total to 275 and past Cocalico’s Tucker Lescoe for the top spot in L-L history. Fisher summed up the accomplishment, saying, “Well deserved, well earned, awesome to say he has made more threes than anyone in L-L history.”

The Barons rebounded from that setback on the 21st, topping Middletown by a 5954 final in the night cap of the Mid-Penn - LancasterLebanon League showdown.

Central saw their halftime cushion evaporate in the third thanks to an 18-8 Middletown run but managed to get back on track to secure the five-point victory. Grube posted another 22-point game, this one with three from long

range. Aaron Enterline added 12 points in the win.

Manheim Central played another close one on the 24th, slipping by Conestoga Valley 60-55. Central used strong first and third quarters to build a 32-24 lead which was able to withstand the Buckskins 31-28 edge in the second and fourth quarters. Enterline topped the scoring chart with 18 points while Grube checked in with 13 points. Sam Witmer added 11.

WRESTLING

The wrestling team kept their spot atop the Section Two standings with wins over Cocalico and Donegal pushing their mark to 15-6 overall.

Central slipped by Cocalico on the 20th, by a slim 32-30 final. Rocco Daugherty (189) and Brett Barbush (160)

Sportsmen Post Schedule

posted pinfall wins while Blake Fasnacht (106) earned his six team points via forfeit. Braxton Keiffer settled f or a tech fall win at 114 while Noah Templin (215), Barrett Keiffer (127) and Cody Hess (133) rounded things out with decisions.

Central picked up the 45-18 win over Donegal on the 25th, capping a 7-0 run through Section Two. Fasnacht (106), Leo Bonanno (113) and Barrett Keiffer (126) picked up f orfeit wins for a quick 18 points. Rocco Daugherty (189) and Templin (215) added pinfall wins while Braxton Keiffer (120) and Hess (132) went the distance for their decisions. Barbush added a tech fall win at 160 while Brodie Daugherty finished things off with a major decision at 172.

Career Fairs Of The Future

The modern world has evolved through the widespread use of new technology in a variety of ways; during the COVID-19 pandemic, schools and businesses heavily relied on technology to safely continue operating. Although the world is no longer in a state of emergency lockdown, organizations such as Junior Achievement of Southcentral Pennsylvania (JASCPA) have found that procedures adopted during the pandemic continue to prove themselves useful.

In 2021, JASCPA implemented JA Inspire, a virtual career fair that schools can utilize for their stu-

dents. The program simulates a real career fair, replete with business representatives who provide details on what it’s like to work for their companies and respective fields through the virtual platform. Upon signing into the application, students begin at the exterior of the career fair building accompanied by virtual students and school buses. They can navigate the page to visit the interior lobby, where dozens of companies have set up their digital booths. “It looks like a real career fair lobby,” said Allison Kierce, chief operating officer of JASCPA. “Students can visit any of the booths they are interested in to learn more

The program is free and open to the public. However, preregistration is required by contacting 717-964-3808 or governordick@hotmail.com and providing a name and phone number in case the program is canceled.

JA Inspire provides a virtual career fair opportunity for students as well as for adults seeking employment.

about the companies and fields they may want to study in college.”

Students participating in JA Inspire are provided with a virtual backpack that allows them to save videos, documents and any information provided by a booth that they want to keep for future reference. Students can log back into the fair at any time to review materials or visit more booths, and they can email specific questions to company representatives.

Prior to 2021, JA Inspire was a conventional career fair that was held in a physical location. Although schools resumed many in-person programs after the pandemic, many have opted to continue using virtual

platforms such as the new iteration of JA Inspire. “A lot of people wanted to get back to having in-person career fairs, but there are logistics to that,” said Kierce. “Virtually hosting JA Inspire removes the need for schools to worry about transportation and allows students to see more companies in a shorter amount of time.”

JA Inspire is provided to schools free of charge, and in 2022, JASCPA was given funding to open JA Inspire to adults in addition to schools. Adults interested in the career fair can contact their local PA CareerLink agency for more information.

JA Inspire will return this year and will be open from Wednesday, March 1, to Friday, June 30. For more information, visit https://tinyurl.com/jainspirefair.
