Applicants Sought For Scholarship BY CATHY MOLITORIS
As a lifetime member of the Manheim Veterans Memorial Ambulance Association, Bob Stirling was dedicated to making a difference in his community. The Robert C. Stirling Scholarship recognizes local people who share the
same mission. Northwest EMS offers the scholarship annually to any resident of the Manheim Central School District who has been accepted into a post-high school education program in the medical field. Applications are being accepted now through Thursday, March 17. See Scholarship pg 3
Alissa Booth (left) and Andrea Black with a certificate recognizing the Manheim Community Library’s Gold Star PA Forward Library status
Making A Well-Rounded Impact On The Community anheim Community Library works hard to be a resource for the community, and its efforts have paid off. The library was recently named a Gold Star PA Forward Library by the Pennsylvania Library Association (PLA). The PA Forward initiative focuses on improving the quality of life in Pennsylvania through five types of knowledge that the PLA believes are essential to success: basic literacy, information literacy, civic and social literacy, health literacy and financial literacy. The Manheim Library began working on the PA Forward initiative in 2017. To achieve Gold Star status, a library must first earn Bronze and Silver Stars by completing a variety of programs and activities. “We earned five Silver Stars to earn the Gold Star,” said Alissa Booth, community relations
“Participating in the PA Forward program gave us access to partners across the state to help us with programming.” “We offer a variety of explorer packs that feature topics like bugs or birds and include binoculars or other items and offer an opportunity to get some physical activity while learning about the world
around you,” said library director Andrea Black. For the financial literacy component, the library offered programs on how to operate a successful side hustle and how to buy a home. “We offered a program on paying for college,” said Booth. “We also have a variety of employment resources, including job listings, on our website.” Now that the library has achieved Gold Star status, it must work to maintain the award, Booth noted. “We’ll have to continue to fulfill core actions and bonus actions to stay eligible,” she explained. “We’ll have to update our Gold status every year.” In Lancaster County, the Manheim library joins Lititz Public Library and Ephrata Public Library in achieving Gold Star status. “Adamstown is working on theirs, and they are almost there,” Black said.
In the fall of 2021, Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) Good News Clubs went live again across Lancaster County and beyond. In the spring of 2022, in-person clubs are planned for elementary-age students in the school districts of Columbia, Conestoga Valley, ELANCO, Elizabethtown, Ephrata, Hempfield, Lampeter-Strasburg, Manheim Township, Penn Manor, Pequea Valley, Lancaster, Warwick,

“The scholarships are for posthigh school education, so it can be college or a tech or trade school,” said Lori Shenk, community outreach manager for Northwest EMS, adding that both current high school students and adults returning to pursue a degree in health care are eligible. Example education paths include nursing, radiology technician or traditional college with a major in a health-care related field. The scholarship is limited to people living in the Manheim Central School District, but applicants do not need to be students of the school district. “The geographic boundary of Manheim Central School District is because of how the scholarship was founded in 1994-95 with Bob Stirling’s affiliation and prominence in the Manheim community and with the Manheim Veterans Memorial Ambulance,” Shenk noted. The Conewago Rod and Gun Club, 1483 Turnpike Road, Elizabethtown, will offer firearm safety training in the spring. The course is designed for individuals who have limited or no experience with a handgun. The three-hour course will teach beginning shooters the fundamental skills needed to own and use a handgun safely and responsibly. It will include instruction in the classroom and on the pistol range. For details and registration, contact training@conewagogunclub.org. The NRA Basic Rifle Shooting class will be held on Sundays, March 20 and April 24. The class will teach the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary for the safe use of a rifle in target shooting. This course includes classroom and range time learning to shoot rifles. Students will learn about the NRA’s rules for safe gun handling, rifle parts and operation, ammunition, shooting fundamentals, range rules, and shooting from multiple positions. Class size for all sessions is limited to eight participants. Minors are welcome when accompanied by a parent or guardian
business and was active in many community and civic activities. After assisting a volunteer ambulance crew at an accident that occurred in front of his home on East High Street in Manheim, Stirling was invited by an ambulance crew member to ride along and assist with the transport of the patient. That invitation led to more than 30 years of service for Stirling with the Manheim Ambulance. Manheim Ambulance merged with Northwest in 2013. Scholarship applicants will be evaluated on a variety of criteria, including GPA and volunteer or
community service. Applications are available at Manheim Central High School, and a link is posted on the Northwest EMS Facebook page. Applications can also be obtained by emailing Shenk at lshenk@nwems86.org or stopping by in person at Northwest EMS, 60 W. Colebrook St., Manheim. Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded, and Shenk encourages anyone pursuing a career in the medical field to apply. “The application process is fairly simple,” she said. “And (the winner’s) scholarship money is paid directly to the school in time for the fall semester.”

and Octorara. Virtual clubs will be offered in Cocalico, Donegal, Manheim Central, and Solanco school districts. A program for sixththrough eighth-grade students will also be starting at Martin Meylin Middle School in Lampeter-Strasburg School District. “We would like to get the clubs all restarted,” said Lisa Kilgore, director of CEF of Lancaster County, who noted that more than 30 clubs were meeting in the county prior to the onset of COVID-19. “We had 17 clubs last fall, plus a Zoom club, and we will have more than 20 this spring,” noted Kilgore. “It’s gradually rebuilding.” CEF is an international organization founded in 1937, with an active
branch in Lancaster County since 1944. “Our purpose is threefold: to evangelize, disciple, and establish children in a local church,” said Kilgore. Clubs are open to any child who attends the school where the club meets. Usually a program for students in first grade through the highest grade level at the school is offered, but in some districts kindergarten clubs are available. Kilgore noted that each club is sponsored by a partner church. “When we finish our 14 weeks (of club meetings), we want (children) to stay connected if they want to. We try to connect them to that partner church,” she said. Good News Club meetings, which are held after school, involve a Bible lesson; a memory verse; songs;
games; small group time, which is called Wonder Time; and missions. Each semester has its own theme. The spring 2022 series is called “The Early Church - God’s Power in Action.” The program has a rotating six-year curriculum. Volunteers are an integral part of the program. “We try to have one adult for every six children,” said Kilgore, who noted that volunteers are trained to use the curriculum. Kilgore praised helpers who have been part of the program the last two years. “The volunteers who have stuck with us through COVID have been really wonderful,” she said. “The kids have needed to talk more.” She pointed out that volunteering can be rewarding to those
who take the opportunity to help guide young lives. “We want to be encouraging to kids and families right now,” she said. “It is a blessing to us to be able to do that.” Kilgore noted that she is grateful for God’s provision over the last few years. “Financially, God has been bringing support,” she said. “He has kept us going in better ways than we could have imagined.” Those who wish to sign a child up for a Good News Club may visit www.ceflancaster.org and click on the registration tab to find the elementary school where their child would attend. Individuals who wish to volunteer may contact CEF through the website or call 717-569-5412.

Making A Difference With Milkweed BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Listening to a news blurb in 2018, Cindy Leonard couldn’t believe what she heard. “It was a story about the decline of the monarch butterfly,” she recalled. The story detailed how the lack of milkweed, the sole food source for monarch caterpillars, had led to a 90% decline in monarchs over the last 20 years. “I have a quarter-mile lane on my property, and at the time, it was lined with milkweed,” she said. “I went outside and looked, and there was really none left. I was astonished because I was so oblivious. This had happened without me noticing.” Since hearing that story, Leonard has focused her efforts on helping the monarch butterfly. As the owner of Milkweed 4 Monarchs in Elizabethtown, she grows 38 species of milkweed and offers both seeds and plants for sale, encouraging others to grow the plants at their homes. “Milkweed is something anyone can grow,” she stated. “Even if you don’t own land, you can grow it on a pot on your deck.” A lifelong gardener, Leonard remembers playing with milkweed pods as a child. “I never really gave the plant any thought,” she said. “I was familiar with common milkweed. It was all around, growing everywhere.” After learning about the plight of the monarch, she discovered that Pennsylvania has 11 native milkweed species and that there are 115 species throughout the United States. While she sells plants and seeds locally, she also ships seeds across the country, hoping to offer native species to people coast to coast.
At her home, she grows milkweed with flowers in a variety of colors and offers a milk jug greenhouse kit, complete with seeds, soil and instructions. From mid-May through June 1, she holds an annual milkweed plant sale, and she offers milkweed garden tours during the last two weeks of June. In July, customers receive a free monarch caterpillar with a milkweed plant purchase. From September through the spring months, she offers milkweed seeds for sale. She keeps her prices low because of her desire to get milkweed into the gardens of as many people as possible. She also enjoys educating customers about the importance of milkweed. “People don’t understand how important milkweed is for the monarch population,” she stated. “The adult butterflies can get nectar from any flower, but the baby caterpillars can only eat milkweed. If there’s no milkweed, there won’t be any more monarchs. … I think any time we’re looking at a species that is declining to the point of extinction, we should all care.” Despite the global impact on the monarchs, Leonard emphasizes that the issue has a local solution, and she encourages everyone to help. “If we all grow milkweed, we can make a difference, one milkweed plant at a time,” she remarked. Leonard’s milkweed farm is located at 8741 Elizabethtown Road. It’s open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays or by appointment at other times. For more information on Milkweed 4 Monarchs, visit www.milkweed4monarchs.org or call 717-367-9656.

CASH PAID for ATVs, ATCs,

This is a vintage Wurlitzer juke box. Wiederseim Associates is pleased to offer the private collection of Carol and Ed Stoudt for auction on Saturday, July 24, at 9 a.m. The sale includes the contents of the legendary Stoudt’s Black Angus Restaurant and Brewery in Adamstown, Pa., as well as Ed and Carol’s private collection from their home. After over 30 years in business, Ed and Carol have sold the business and are seeking their next adventure.
The couple opened the Black Angus Antique Mall along with the restaurant and beer garden in the 1980s. Business was good. Why not open a brewery? Based on German beers brewed in the Reinheitsgebot tradition, the couple opened the brewery in 1987, with Carol becoming the first female brewmaster in the U.S. since Prohibition. Through the years, the couple traveled and collected extensively
for their business and home. They assembled items such as Black Forest carved furniture (including two tall case clocks), whimsical circus novelties, Art Nouveau brass chandeliers for the beer hall, carousel horses and an unusual carousel
running rooster, vintage posters, a large collection of German steins, a restored 1932 Auburn Convertible and a 1937 Ford Woody, partially restored, all of which will be in the July 24 sale. “If you’ve ever been to Stoudt’s, you’ll be very familiar with the items in this sale and won’t want to miss it. Their Oktoberfests were the best! Ed in his lederhosen leading the procession, the beer hall with great German food and the German band,” said Ted Wiederseim, auctioneer and owner of Wiederseim Associates Inc. “The Stoudt sale will be our first live sale in over a year, and we’re very excited about getting back to business as usual.” Bidding will be live/in-person as well as live online through Bidsquare, Invaluable and Liveauctioneers. A preview starts Monday, July 19, and runs through Friday, July 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale will be held at Wiederseim’s facility, located at 1041 W. Bridge St., Phoenixville, Pa. For additional information, call 610-827-1910 or visit www.wiederseim.com.
The massive Art Deco brass chandeliers are from Stoudt’s Bier Hall.
July Is Customer Appreciation Month At The Emporium The Historic Burlington Antiques and Art Emporium in Burlington City, N.J., will continue its year-long celebration of 20 years in business with Customer Appreciation Month all July. The Emporium will give away three gift certificates at the end of the month. Three lucky customers will have a chance to win a $50, $25, or $15 gift certificate to the multidealer shop. Each time a customer receives an invoice, they will receive a raffle ticket, thus the more a customer buys, the more chances they have of winning. Also, each month during the summer, the front sales display case will highlight dealer’s best or unusual items from their booth or case.
