50 Years Of Helping Small Hands Zion Lutheran Preschool Marks Anniversary By Chelsea Peifer
This school year marks the 50th anniversary of Zion Lutheran Preschool, which Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church launched in 1969 in the education wing of its facility at 2 S. Hazel St., Manheim. Lifelong church member Donna Rhodes explained that the vision for the preschool came from two women. Sylvia Miller and the late Dolores Sachs were instrumental in establishing Zion Lutheran Preschool after seeing the need
for another program to serve children in the Manheim community. Originally, classes were offered only for 4-year-olds, but the program was a success and quickly expanded to make room for 3-year-olds in the following years. The late Darlene Rambler was the third person whom Rhodes recalled staffing the preschool along with Miller and Sachs. Other women from the church got involved too as the program grew, including Rhodes, who began as a volunteer teacher’s assistant before eventually becoming a paid assistant. From 1987 to 2010, Rhodes served as director at Zion Lutheran Preschool. See Zion Preschool pg 2
Zion Lutheran Preschool in Manheim, represented by current director Katie Mummau (back, center) and past directors Cathy Knittle (back, left) and Donna Rhodes (back, right), along with current students (front, from left) Liam, Kalena, Sophia, Alessio, June, Michaela, and Dominic, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this school year.
Transforming Plastic Bags Into Mats Of Love
Celebrate The Mystery! By Chelsea Peifer
By Chelsea Peifer
Cindi Selph set out to learn how to crochet after having a conversation with a friend about people who crochet plastic bags into sleeping mats. “I went online and got inspired by all of the YouTube videos,” recalled Selph. With sewing and knitting skills already under her belt, Selph was able to quickly teach herself how to crochet the plastic bag yarn more commonly referred to simply as “plarn.” Selph reached out to Mount Joy Helping Services to see if there might be a need for the 4-by-6-foot plarn sleeping mats See Mats Of Love pg 3
Holding up two sleeping mats crafted from plastic bags are Mats of Love participants (from left) Heather Anderson, Mary Brubaker, Mary Rost, and Cindi Selph. Members of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Mount Joy and the local community meet regularly to create the mats, which are then distributed to people experiencing homelessness.
The year is 1944. The Second Great War is raging on throughout Europe and in the Pacific, and Americans back home are doing everything within their power to support those serving abroad. The enigmatic owner of the Mount Hope Estate is funding a USO tour to help brighten spirits on the Pacific front, but danger is lurking at the estate. That is the setting for the mystery soon to unfold and be solved at this year’s Murder at Mount Hope Mansion, a now-annual zfundraising event planned by the Friends of Manheim Community Library.
The Friends invite the community to enjoy an interactive dinner theater experience at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 22, at Mount Hope Mansion, 2775 Lebanon Road, Manheim. A four-course meal will be served, and then guests will assemble in the mansion’s Theater Room for a time of interrogation and comedy. See Library pg 5

Partying For Pediatric Care At Schreiberpalooza
Zion Preschool from pg 1 parents and caregivers of children from infancy to age 3, takes place at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesdays at the church. “Zion (Church) considers this (preschool) their main mission,” remarked Rhodes. “We definitely feel that love over here. The church is very committed to supporting the preschool,” said Mummau. Kindergarten readiness is one of the main goals of preschool, along with socialization and building peer relationships. “Peer building is huge. We love watching those friendships grow throughout the year,” Mummau shared. “The kids are happy to come here, and there really is a sense of community in this environment.” Total enrollment is currently at approximately 100 students, said Mummau. Enrollment for the 2020-21 school year will open on Monday, Feb. 10. Tours are available by appointment. To schedule a tour, interested individuals may call 717-665-5880 or email zionlutheranpreschool@gmail.com. More details are available at www. zionmanheim.com/preschool or at the “Zion Lutheran Preschool” Facebook page.
Rhodes said that her children attended the preschool, and now seven of her eight grandchildren have also gone through the program. Zion Church member Cathy Knittle, who was director of the preschool from 1981 to 1984, said that the friendships her sons formed while going to Zion Lutheran Preschool are some of her most treasured memories from her involvement there. “Not only did the boys make friends, but I did too, and then we’d have playdates and do other things together,” recalled Knittle. “This was always a great place for people to meet and make friends.” The continuity and legacy of having multiple generations that have attended the preschool is not uncommon. “So many people who went to the preschool now have kids or grandchildren who have attended or are going here now,” shared current director Katie Mummau. Today, Zion Lutheran Preschool has a nine-member staff and offers flexible programs for children ages 1 to 5. Each class has a teacher and an assistant teacher. A free toddler gym program, open to

To quote Bob Dylan, “the times they are a-changin’.” After six years in September and two years in May, Schreiberpalooza will be held for the first time in February. Dan Fink, director of marketing and public relations for the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, explained that in 2016 and 2017, the music festival that is Schreiberpalooza was held on the same weekend as the Rubber Duckie Race. “It was not sustainable, primarily for staff (members) and volunteers,” he said. “We’ve held it on Mother’s Day weekend in May the past two years and ran into schedule conflicts with other May events (such as) graduations, proms, and the like that probably hurt attendance a bit. We recognize that moving the date again creates some challenges, but we know the area entertainment calendar is more open, (with) fewer competing events, in February.” Thus, Schreiberpalooza will be held on Saturday, Feb. 8, from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. at Clair Brothers, 1 Clair Blvd., Manheim. Local bands Vinyl Groov, 3rd Power Family Soul, and The Usual Suspects will be the featured performers. The Usual Suspects blends Dorden Biving, lead singer of Mama Tried, and Good 2 Go members Jim Darby and Scott Bacon and
will be participating in Schreiberpalooza for the first time. 3rd Power Family Soul, which bills itself as the ultimate dance band, and Vinyl Groov, a special occasion dance and show band, will both appear in the music festival for the second time. Vinyl Groov is led by vocalist and rhythm and blues aficionado Harold “Lark” Lowery. Trumpeter Todd Fulginiti, who recently left Vinyl Groov after eight years of membership, described his first impression of the band in a farewell note posted on his personal website. “Those old school R&B tunes sounded at least as good as the records, tapes, and CDs I’d been listening to all my life,” he wrote. “I had the pleasure of making music with a world-class band whose vocalists rival the iconic artists they cover,” Fulginiti continued. “I had never (before) played with a group that oozed so much soul and valued the nuances of supporting parts as much as the lead.” Along with the new date for Schreiberpalooza, the festival is also getting a new theme. The Feb. 8 event will be a Mardi Gras-themed party complete with New Orleans-inspired food from Lancaster Dispensing Company and mixed drinks courtesy of The Traveling Tap. Craft beer will be provided by Mad Chef Craft Brewing and St. Boniface Craft Brewing Co. A cost will be charged at the door for

She invited people from her church, St. Mark’s United Methodist Church (UMC) in Mount Joy, to join her in creating the mats to then be distributed to people in need. For someone sleeping outside, the mats add a layer of protection - however thin - from the cold, damp ground. Thus far, the St. Mark’s Mats of Love group has
completed approximately 50 mats that have been given away and well-received. The technique for making the mats begins with flattening basic plastic bags the two-handled ones used at grocery and convenience stores - and then measuring and cutting them into pieces that are rolled into balls of plarn. Next comes the process of crocheting the mats, each of which Selph said usually takes two weeks for her to complete, but it can take

more or less time depending how much time per day someone has to devote to the project. “I usually spend a couple of hours each evening working on it,” shared Selph. One evening a month, Selph opens up her home for anyone from St. Mark’s UMC or the community to gather to work on Mats of Love. “It’s been pretty lively,” remarked Selph, adding that attendance usually ranges from five to 15 people. The beauty of the project is that people of all ages can help, Selph said, whether they have crocheting skills or not. Some members of St. Mark’s UMC assist by donating bags, and the church has a box designated for plastic bag donations. Others cut strips of plastic and roll plarn balls at home in their leisure time. “Some people find it very therapeutic,” commented Selph. Mats of Love participant Mary Rost agreed, chiming in, “It’s truly cheap therapy.” “There are a lot of people that just donate the bags, which is great because we’re happy to have them,” said Rost. Colorful bags are especially appreciated as Rost explained that it adds dimension and interest to the overall design and look of the mat. The concept of making and giving away the plarn mats is not new or unique to the Mats of Love group at St. Mark’s UMC, emphasized Selph. “There are lots of people doing it, even here in Lancaster,” she shared. In addition to giving mats to Mount Joy Helping Services, Mats of Love participant Deb Rupp delivers mats to Lancaster First Assembly of God, where the mats are given out as needed to homeless people who attend a free monthly meal hosted by that congregation. Even the excess of the plastic bags used in the process - the handles and very bottom portion of each bag - are put to good use, as they are donated to the Mount Joy Lions Club to later be used in making recycled benches. To learn more about Mats of Love at St. Mark’s UMC, readers may call the church at 717-653-5493.

Denim & Diamonds from pg 1 On Saturday, Feb. 29, the Kiwanis Club of Norlanco-Rheems will host its second annual Denim & Diamonds dinner auction at Acorn Farms, 3141 Mount Joy Road, Mount Joy. The community is invited to attend and support the club’s fundraising efforts for a new picnic pavilion to be built at Kunkle Field, 301 Manheim St., Mount Joy. The evening will begin at 5:30 p.m. with appetizers, and dinner stations will open at 7 p.m. Silent and live auctions will begin at 8 p.m. Kiwanis Club member and event co-chair Ben Osterhout noted that numerous one-of-a-kind experiences will be up for bids, thanks to the generosity of local businesses and individuals. The concept for Denim & Diamonds came about last year when Kiwanis Club members brainstormed ideas for an event that would be unique, said Osterhout. Attire for the evening is theme-fitting or business casual. “We wanted something that would be casual, but at the same time if somebody wanted to dress up they could, noted club member and event cochair Linda Eberly. “It’s going to be a fun night with entertainment, food, and drink, and anyone is welcome, Osterhout emphasized. To reserve tickets, interested individuals may contact Osterhout at 570-885-1752 or benosterhout@pakiwanis.org by Friday, Feb. 14. Diamond, Denim, and Partner levels of sponsorship are available. Donations of items and experiences for the auctions will also be accepted through Feb. 14. Kiwanis Club members have been working with Mount Joy Borough on plans for the proposed pavilion, which
will be located at the site of the former tennis courts that were removed in 2015 due to deterioration. “Because of how much the field is used almost all year long for baseball and softball, a picnic pavilion will get a lot of use, too, Osterhout said. Architectural plans and graphics of the pavilion will be on display at the Denim & Diamonds event. Kiwanis International is a global community of clubs dedicated to improving the lives of children. One of the last major projects the Norlanco-Rheems chapter assisted in fundraising for was the playground at Rotary Park in Mount Joy completed in 2015. The Kiwanis Club of Norlanco-Rheems meets at 7:15 a.m. on the first and third Wednesdays of each month at the Wallick-O’Connor House reception center, 16 E. Main St., Mount Joy. A monthly evening meeting was also recently added and takes place at 7 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month at the same location. New members are always welcome. For more information, readers may contact Osterhout or visit https://pakiwanis.org. Pictured on front: The Kiwanis Club of NorlancoRheems, represented by (from left) Barbara O’Neal, Ben Osterhout, and Linda Eberly, invites the community to a Denim & Diamonds dinner auction on Feb. 29 at Acorn Farms in Mount Joy. Lancaster EMS has been awarded grant funds in the amount of $4,770 from Dart Foundation toward the purchase of seven Pediatric Ambulance Child Restraints, which are designed to help transport pediatric patients safely in ambulances. The funds were presented to Lancaster EMS leadership staff by Dart Foundation committee members Tammy Kline and Annette Walters on Jan. 22 at the Millersville EMS station. The safety equipment will allow EMS service providers to protect children who are being transported in its ambulances by safely holding them in place on the stretcher and preventing them from making any potentially dangerous movements during the transport. The Pediatric Ambulance Child Restraints are made of breathable fabric to allow maximum airflow and meet infection control standards. The harness is padded to keep infants comfortable during transportation and reduce the risk of pressure during long-distance transportation. AARP Chorus Seeks Members The Lancaster AARP Chorus is seeking new members. The chorus was formed 39 years ago as a volunteer group of people who enjoy singing and visiting retirement centers and nursing homes to entertain the residents. Alto, tenor, and bass singers are sought. Those who like to sing and/or who have sung in church choirs or with other groups are encouraged to join.
The chorus presents concerts in area retirement centers in May and December. It meets each Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. at Grace United Church of Christ, 1947 New Holland Pike (Route 23), Lancaster. Rehearsal for the May concert will start on Feb. 7. For more information, readers may contact the director, Phyllis Strittmater, at 717-394-7597 or katlyn1942@aol.com.
