Sharing History With Students

Addressing a room full of high school students, Vietnam veteran John Hoober presented the crowd with a goal for the assembly.

“We hope you have a lot of questions for us,” he said. “That’s why we’re here.”

Hoober was one of seven vets from Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1008 who spoke to students at Manheim Central High School in January. Students in grades nine through 11 in the Advanced Placement (AP) U.S. History, American History and Human Geography classes participated in the program.

“We want to give students a chance to ask us the questions they may not get answers to out of their history books,” Hoober explained.

He’s been organizing presentations at area schools for nine years. “We really put an emphasis on the students’

questions. What do they want to know?” said Hoober, who is the head of the chapter’s education committee.

At each visit, members of the chapter bring personal memorabilia such as photographs, letters and uniform pieces, which they share with students while also having time to talk one-on-one with students.

The panel then sets up for the formal program, which began at Manheim Central with each panelist giving a brief history of his involvement in the war. Panelists at the January presentation included Pat Gibson, who served as an Army medic during the Tet Offensive; chapter president Mike Kunitsky, who volunteered to go to Vietnam with the Navy; Lou Farganis, a Marine who was wounded twice in the war; and Alberto Ros, a Cuban American who enlisted before he became a U.S. citizen. At 92, Anna Mae Kulp has spent a lifetime raising four children, serving as a member of Chiques Church in Manheim and cooking homemade meals. “Mom was always a great cook and baker,” said Wesley Kulp, her son. “She would pick and can strawberries and make her famous strawberry jam. Her baked corn was always a hit at gatherings. I must say that her pig stomach was the best ever and there were never leftovers.”

But Anna Mae had another talent that she didn’t pursue until she had an empty nest. She loved to paint. Now the Manheim woman’s art will be on display for everyone to see

After Don Good passed away in December, his four children described their father as having lived a life of “calling, connection, commitment and caring.” Good, a farmer and pastor, spent his last days living at Mt. shared that he was the same age as some of the students in the room, just 17 years old, when he enlisted. Dan Duane recalled his years of service in the Army and then read the names of five people from Manheim who died in the war.

Speaking at schools is part of the Vietnam Veterans of America’s overall mission, said Kunitzky. “We also ring bells for the Salvation Army each year,” he said. “Our vice president, Bill Daley, reads the obituaries daily, and if he sees that a Vietnam vet has died, we will send the family a sympathy card through the funeral home.” Chapter 1008 currently has 150 members, and membership is open to anyone who served on active duty in Vietnam between Nov. 1, 1955, and May 7, 1975, or in any duty location between Aug. 5, 1964, and May, 7, 1975.

Veterans brought personal memorabilia to share with students.

Mary Nolt, whose AP History students participated in the program, said the presentation offered a way for students to interact with living history while enjoying a studentcentered event. “The real power of the Vietnam veterans panel from Chapter 1008 lies in the variety of perspectives they bring to their talk, their historical artifacts and their desire to answer student ques-

tions,” she commented. “The human element of history is what makes it so relatable and interesting, At the end of the day, history is about people, and the Vietnam veterans panel shines insight not only on the Vietnam War but on the power of the human spirit.”

been instrumental in volunteering with the facility’s capital campaign to raise money for renovations.

“Mt. Hope cared for Don, opening a space for his family to tenderly sit by his bedside, holding his hand, sharing memories, loving him and releasing him to heaven,” said Kris Wilson, director of advancement for Mt. Hope.

Stories like Don’s are not unique at Mt. Hope, where residents are treated with love and care regardless of their changing circumstances and life situations.

You can support the mission of Mt. Hope by participating in the Sweetheart To-Go Banquet, with proceeds to benefit the Mt. Hope community. The meal will be offered for curbside pickup on Saturday, Feb. 25, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the parking lot of LCBC - Manheim Campus, 2392 Mount Joy Road, Manheim. Each meal will include barbecue firegrilled chicken, gourmet cheese potatoes, sweet and sour saucy green beans with bacon, applesauce, a dinner roll with butter and a dessert.

Mt. Hope is a 50-bed nonprofit skilled nursing facility and reha-

bilitation center with a mission of caring for residents regardless of their ability to pay. “It’s a sweet place in our community that ensures our residents have a place to call home when situations arise where care is needed,” Wilson said. “Many of our residents lack the financial resources to cover the cost of their care, and the gap is growing in what residents can afford to pay versus what state assistance, Medicaid, reimburses for the daily rate of care.” Donations and tickets to dinners such as the Sweetheart To-Go Banquet

help to fill that gap, she stated, adding, “It’s the heartfelt gifts that keep Mt. Hope going and able to provide a wonderful place for people.”

Preorders will be taken for meals and saved under the name provided when ordered. To preorder or for more information, call Wilson at 717-682-8026 or email advancement@mthopenazarene.o

Women’s Group To Start Devotional Series

The Ladies’ Lunch Bunch of Reformation Lutheran Church will start a new devotional series on Tuesday, Feb. 14, called “The Foremothers of Jesus.”

The Ladies’ Lunch Bunch was formed in 2018 and meets on the second Tuesday of each month from 10 to 11:10 a.m. at the

church, 2100 Manor Ridge Drive, Lancaster. Afterward, attendees are welcome to meet at a restaurant at 11:30 a.m. In February, the group will eat at Mission BBQ, 2002 Fruitville Pike, Lancaster.

Beginning with Eve from the Book of Genesis and ending in December with Mary, the mother of Jesus, the group will study 11 of the women in the biblical ancestry of Jesus. The study will be facilitated by the Rev. Arica Demme, who has been assisting pastor Mark Chavez at Reformation since January 2022. Each month’s installment of the study can stand on its own, so attendees can join at any time during the year. There is no cost for the study.

For more information, contact 717-947-4248. Information about the church is available at www.reformation-nalc.org.

Barons Claim 11 Wins in 12 Attempts

As the wins mount for the boys’ basketball team, their season becomes more and more impressive. The Barons used victories over Garden Spot and Ephrata to improve to 16-3 overall and 9-1 in Section Two play. Those marks include four straight wins as well as victories in 11 of their last 12 games. All of that has Central perched atop not only the Section Two standings but also the District 3-5A rankings as the season’s finish line draws near.

Manheim Central used a strong close in both halves to blow by Spot, 61-44, on the 26th. That included a 15-8 spurt through the second quarter, making it a 30-22 game at the break and a

17-5 game sealing run to the whistle. The Spartans did wrestle control for the third frame, trimming Central’s lead down to five before the game sealing run. Trey Grube netted 21 to lead the charge.

Against Ephrata on the 31st, Manheim started slowly with a 98 edge after eight minutes of action. Back-to-back quarters of matching 15-13 scores stretched that lead to five-points heading into the fourth quarter. Once again, the Baron used a strong finish to seal the game, posting a 24-17 edge over the Mountaineers in the fourth for the 6351 final. Grube finished with 11 points while Sam Witmer led the way with 16. Jackson Tracy added 12 points and Aaron Enterline another 10.

WRESTLING

As the light dims on the wrestling regular season the Barons kicked off their postseason with a trip to Manheim Township for the LancasterLebanon League Championships on January 27th and 28th. Central collected 161.5 team points, putting the Barons third and just 10.5 points out of the top spot.

“They believed they could win it,” said head coach Robert Eno. “They saw the opportunity and they put themselves in a position to do it with nine on the podium.”

Brett Barbush fronted the group, going 4-0 in the 160-pound bracket, earning the senior a gold medal while also collecting his 100th career victory. Braxton Keiffer just missed joining Keiffer as a gold medalist, dropping only his final bout in the 114-pound bracket to snag silver.

Two of the nine medalists finished as “champions of the consolation bracket” earning Barrett Keiffer (127) and Rocco Daugherty (1859) bronze medals. Brodie Daugherty collected a fourthplace medal after dropping his consolation championship bout at 172.

The remaining four Barons all ended up seventh in their respective weight classes. Blake Fasnacht earned his medal at 107, Code Hess at 133, Logan Forrest at 152 with Noah Templin rounding out the group with a 215pound medal.

Manheim’s post season journey continued on January 31st with a trip to Wilson High School to face the Bulldogs in the opening round of the District 3-3A Team Championship. In that trip, however, Central absorbed a 59-12 loss, bouncing the Barons from the team competition. Barbush (160) and Rocco Daugherty (189) were the lone victors for Manheim, each posting a pinfall.

SWIMMING

The girls’ swim team tasted victory for the first time this season, topping Conestoga Valley 57-49 on January 26th. The Lady Barons claimed two of the three relay races, kicking the meet off with a 200-medley relay

win and finishing things with a win in the 400-freestyle relay. Gabrielle Fittery and Ashley Mellinger led the way with two solo wins each. Mellinger claimed the 200 IM and 100-breaststroke with Fittery taking the 100- and 200-free. Chloe Enck (50-free) and Samara Bucher (100-backstoroke) collected the final two wins.

The Lady Barons were on the other side of their January 31st meet with Cocalico, falling by a 115-37 final. Mellinger was the lone swimmer to claim an event, doing so twice, with wins in the 100-butterfly and 200 IM.

On the boys’ side, Manheim found themselves on the wrong end of both finals, falling to Conestoga Valley 87-68 and to Cocalico 89-61. The Barons had three solo wins against CV with one each going to Avery Kirchner (200-free), Chase Kirchner (100butterfly) and Ryan Moreno (100free) to go along with a win by the 200-freestyle relay.

Another four wins came against Cocalico but all were solo events with Bryce Garber (50-free and 100-breaststroke) snagging two of them. Anderson Pilsner (500-free) and Bryce Steach (100butterfly) accounted for the remaining two wins.

BOWLING

The bowling team inched closer to the end of their regular season, splitting matches with Lampeter-Strasburg and ELCO for a 60-38 overall record. Manheim missed an opportunity to close in

on the Section Three leading Pioneers, falling by a 5-2 final instead. Ethan Howard slipped by the 600-pin barrier with his team high 603 series. Jesse Hurst (572) and Landen Statts (567) finished five pins apart while Asher Harris posted a 522 series. Hailey Kowalski finished up the scorers with a 513 series.

Manheim rebounded with a 70 win over ELCO on the 30th. Statts moved to the top of the team with his 617 series while Kowalski (566) and Hurst (555) finished close to each other with Ethan Howard settling for a 505. Aston Fritz stepped in to the five hole and bowled a 434.

RIFLE

The rifle team remained in a first-place tie with Manheim Township thanks to wins over Wilson and Conestoga Valley. Central had little trouble getting by Wilson on the 26th, posting a 496-484 victory. Nate Sauder and Aubrey Meyers each enjoyed perfect matches. Kyler Groff and Andrew Waddington finished one off that pace while Genna Eberly finished two off that pace.

Things were a bit closer in Manheim’s 496-494 win over CV on the 31st. Eberly was the lone perfect shooter but the rest of the Baron’s scoring five all finished with a 99 to secure the win. Waddington and Sauder were joined by Alexa Hoffman and Natalia Winkler to form that quartet.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

The Lady Baron basketball team moved closer to securing a

berth in the upcoming L-L tournament with wins over Garden Spot and Ephrata keeping Manheim alone in first place with a pristine 10-0 Section Two record. Meanwhile the Lady Baron’s 16-3 overall mark slots them fourth in the most recent District 3-5A rankings.

Central had no trouble with Garden Spot on the 26th, cruising to a 61-17 victory. Maddie Knier outscored the Lady Spartans by herself and nearly doubled their point total with her game high 30 points. Despite the 44-point final margin the game started normally with Manheim holding just a 12-7 lead after the opening frame. Things got crazy from there with the Lady Barons posting a 13-point edge in the second and a 15-point edge in the third before closing out the game with a 12-1 final frame.

Things were a lot closer when Ephrata came to town on the 31st. So much so that Manheim needed overtime to secure the 53-49 victory. Central opened strong and held an 18-13 edge after one but the Lady Mountaineers posted a 19-9 frame heading into the break for a 32-27 lead. The Lady Barons started digging out of that second quarter hole with a 12-8 third quarter run and finished with a slim 7-6 advantage in the fourth. That made it a 46-46 game and sent the team into an extra session. Manheim claimed the extra frame, 7-3, to secure the 53-49 win. Knier netted 25 in the win while Kaylie Kroll finished with 14-points.

GOTR Helps Girls Reach Developmental Finish Line

Season

All phases of development are important. But it seems that the stage between the third and eighth grades may be especially critical in the growth of young women.

That’s where Girls on the Run (GOTR) steps in and helps girls put their collective best foot forward. GOTR’s mission is to help adolescent females become more social, more confident and more emotionally aware.

“We address the whole girl,” said Jennifer West, program director for GOTR of Lancaster. “Girls are facing so many critical decisions at this stage. We help girls with friendships, resolving conflicts, reaching goals, overcoming obstacles and asking for advice.”

“We hear girls say, ‘I’m not good enough. I’m not tall enough. I’m not smart enough,’” continued West. “We tell them, ‘No, you want to be yourself.’ We help girls find their star power. We help girls make good choices.”

West emphasized that GOTR is more than simply a running program, but an after-school, community program. “You can hop, jump and skip, as long as you’re moving forward,” she said.

GOTR of Lancaster conducts two 90-minute meetings each week for 10 weeks, during both the spring and fall seasons. Registration for the spring 2023 season will begin Wednesday, Feb. 15.

Meetings are conducted by volunteer coaches in every school district in Lancaster and Lebanon counties, as well as at churches and social organizations like the YMCA. Last spring, GOTR served 960 local residents, and in the fall, the program’s participants numbered around 560. This spring, GOTR of Lancaster is shooting for 1,100 participants, 80 teams and 450 volunteer coaches.

“We’re really dependent on finding people with love for Girls on the Run,” said West.

GOTR’s program separates its girls into two groups by age. The course focuses on participants learning about themselves first, then learning about cooperation and finally learning about their communities.

This year’s spring GOTR program

will be capped on Saturday, May 20, at Franklin & Marshall College with its annual 5K run, which is expected to draw 3,000 participants, running buddies, coaches and spectators.

“We started out with 25 girls and two teams,” said West. “It’s 14 years later, and we feel like Girls on the Run has become a household name.”

Lancaster is one of 200 councils of the international GOTR program. In 2017, GOTR of Lancaster incorporated Lebanon County as part of its reach.

Since its inception, GOTR of Lancaster has served nearly 19,000 participants.

“Now we have girls who have graduated from college coming back and

Girls on the Run promotes confidence, social skills and self-awareness.

they’re like a bridge to the older people,” said West. “We’re a lot more sure of ourselves. We know it’s successful. We know it’s impactful. We know it’s making a difference in people’s lives.”

To register for GOTR’s spring session, visit www.gotrlancaster.org, email jwest@gotrlancaster.org or call 717-869-5655. There is a fee to register, based on income. It’s Fastnacht Time At Holy Trinity

Making fastnachts at Holy Trinity Catholic Church is an exact science. Sort of. There are specific steps required in making the treats, but because each one is handmade, no two are alike, said Betty Mahan, a member of the fastnacht committee at the church.

The fastnacht sale started as a project to raise funds to build a new church. While the current bake will produce more than 5,000 dozen fastnachts, the sale began as a small endeavor, noted volunteer Kathleen Lutz.

“There is a correct way to roll the dough,” Mahan explained. “It’s not like rolling dough at home. You don’t flour the dough. You only flour the board and the pin. You don’t turn the dough over. You relax the dough by lifting if off the board.” The dough rises twice - once overnight before it’s rolled out and once after rolling - before the treats are fried. She noted that the resulting fastnacht is unique, adding, “I’ve never had any that taste like ours.”

Holy Trinity’s annual fastnacht sale will begin on Monday, Feb. 20. Sales will continue Tuesday, Feb. 21, and Wednesday, Feb. 22, followed by Mondays and Wednesdays through March 15.

“It started out with only one or two days of sales,” said Lutz, who has been volunteering with the bake since the 1970s. While the original recipe is the same, she noted that some things have been tweaked. “We’ve found easier ways to do things over the years,” she said. “Everybody has good ideas. Some work and some don’t.”

The sale is still a fundraiser for the church, with proceeds used for parish projects and to support Our Lady of the Angels Catholic School. Members of St. Peter Catholic Church in Columbia also assist with the sale, said St. Peter member George Overmeyer. “This is a ‘fun’ raiser more than a fundraiser,” he added. “We all have a lot of fun.”

Volunteers are needed to help with the bakes, with shifts available

Banners Installed As Part Of Beautification Efforts

The Market Manheim Team of the Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce has taken on a few beautification projects to help make Manheim more visually appealing.

The first project was to design, print, and install 23 new pole banners

starting at 4 a.m. for people who want to help roll the dough. Experience is not required, said volunteer Karen Sahd. “There’s always somebody around who knows the correct way to do things,” she commented.

Mahan noted that working at 4 a.m. is not required. “People can give an hour of time or help when they can,” she said. “We need second shift people and cleanup people, too.”

Fastnachts are available by the dozen, either glazed or plain. The committee members estimate that 75% of orders are for glazed treats.

“You don’t even need to look in the

bag to know if they are glazed or not,” volunteer Jim Knapp said. “It’s evident by the weight of the bag because we use so much glaze.”

Orders will be taken for fastnachts online only until sold out. To place an order, visit www.holytrinitycolumbia pa.com. Doors will open at 10 a.m. each day for pickup at the side entrance of the school, 404 Cherry St., Columbia. Orders not picked up by 1 p.m. will be resold on a firstcome, first-served basis. To volunteer with the fastnacht bake, call the parish office at 717-684-2711.

through Friday, March 3, at the gallery, 23 N. Main St., Manheim.

Dena Kulp, Anna Mae’s daughterin-law, attended a painting workshop at the gallery and struck up a conversation with owner Heather Lindsey about Anna Mae. “I was talking to Heather, and she said, ‘I would love to do something to honor your mother-in-law,’” Dena recalled. For the show, about nine of Anna Mae’s paintings will be on display, showcasing her talent at depicting everything from Mount Rainier in Washington state to floral scenes.

At the age of 77, Anna Mae was diagnosed with a brain tumor, underwent surgery and spent more than 100 days in rehab and hospice. After that, she never painted again, but the family held on to her art. Many of the paintings currently hang in Anna Mae’s room at Pleasant View Communities, but they’ll be transported to the gallery for the show. Anna Mae also plans to attend to see her work on display.

Wesley noted that his mother never sold her art but often donated pieces to community events. “Painting was a hobby for mom,” he said. “She set up a small studio at home in one of the boys’ old bedrooms.”

Brenda Ruhl, Anna Mae’s daughter, said that her mother sang in the choir at church and loved music. “Mother also played the piano, and we would sing along with her,” Brenda recalled. “What a good childhood I had.”

Dena remarked that her motherin-law has great stories to tell of her youth, including the story of how she learned to drive in the 1950s - in a cornfield with Wesley rattling around in the backseat.

Anna Mae’s family members are excited that the artist will finally get a chance to showcase her work in the community, and Lindsey anticipates a great show. “Let the artistic inspiration of one of our own, Anna Mae, bring you joy and even spark some inspiration inside of you,” Lindsey said. “Come and take a glimpse of part of who she is through this beautiful tribute show to one of our own community members.”

Creative Inspirationz Gallery is open Fridays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
