SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954
Igniting the light within BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Bringing God’s Word to the stage BY JEFF FALK
It’s one thing to hear the Word. It’s one thing to read the Word. It’s one thing to process the Word. But it’s another thing to experience the Word live. Piercing Word, headquartered at 1821 Oregon Pike, Suite 210, Lancaster, presents Scripture passages from the English Standard Version Bible word for word through dramatic and musical performances. The nonprofit’s mission is to “ignite passion for the Word of God in the heart of the church.” “We don’t just perform Scripture; we challenge people,” said Piercing Word’s founder and executive director, Aaron House. “Scripture is our script. The Word of God is so powerful, and not just for the people on stage, but also for the people who come. Their lives will be changed when they come. It’s not just another entertainment. It’s a life-changing opportunity.” Piercing Word will bring its unique form of spiritual entertainment to Lancaster Alliance Church, 210 Pitney Road, L ancaster, for four double feature presentations in the middle of Februar y. Piercing Word will present “Stewardship” and “Passion: T h e M u s i c a l ” o n F r i d a y, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m.; Saturday, Feb. 17, at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.; and Sunday, Feb. 18, at 3 p.m. The stage performance is expected to take 90 minutes to present. Admission will be handled on a pay-as-you-will basis. “The beauty of the music and the truth of the words Larry A. Derr

wo months ago, Larry A. Derr of Mount Joy was installed as the 125th Right Worshipful Grand Master of the Masons of Pennsylvania. The role is an honor, he said, and offers him an opportunity to promote an organization that’s had a major influence on his life. “Being the 125th Grand Master means you are a part of a very long tradition of service, one I am extremely honored to continue,” he said. “I have been a member for more than 50 years, so Freemasonry has been a significant part of my life and significantly shaped the man I am today. This is a way for me to give back for the lifelong learning, friendships and experiences this journey has afforded me.” In this role, Derr is responsible for leading the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania, which oversees 388 lodges and approximately 87,000 members across the co m m o nw e a l t h , a s w e l l a s the Masonic Charities, which include the Masonic Villages, the Masonic Children’s Home, the Pennsylvania Masonic Youth Foundation, the Masonic Blood + Organ Donor Program and the Masonic Library and Museum of Pennsylvania. A graduate of Manheim Central High School, Derr earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial technology and drafting from Northwest Missouri State University. He began his career as an estimator and construction manager for a firm in Mount Joy and, after 40 years in commercial masonry, retired as vice president. He will hold his current position with the Masons for two years, and his goals include membership growth, enrichment and retention. He shared his theme for his leadership
term: “Ignite the Light Within,” a reference to the knowledge/ enlig htenment each Mason experienced when he joined Freemasonry. “We will seek to strengthen community partnerships and reinvigorate lodges across the state that phased back their engagement during the pandemic,” he shared. “ We will expand and enhance our educational programs, mentorship opportunities and charitable service. By demonstrating the kindness and civility our world desperately needs, it is my hope that more good men will see what we are about and want to join our ranks and efforts to improve our communities.” A lifelong resident of Mount Joy, Derr has been married to Rochelle for 46 years, and they have a son, Dustin. Derr enjoys staying active, walking and exercising daily, spending time outdoors and watching sports. He also serves as vice chairman of the Mount Joy Borough Water Authority. But it’s the Masons who truly have Derr’s heart, and he loves that the organization is an international fraternity with a centuries-old history of service. “What I find incredible is that as a member, you can travel to … just about any countr y in the world and visit a Masonic lodge,” he said. “I have heard countless stories of members who have encountered challenges while traveling across the countr y or abroad and received assistance from a local lodge or Mason. I’ve also heard numerous stories of members accidentally meeting a fellow brother - we call fellow members our ‘brothers,’ as that is how we treat one another - and building an instant friendship based on an innate trust based on our shared values.”

They can help guide a blind person, respond to a seizure, open a door, guide an individual to an exit or guide them to a car.” It typically takes 18 to 24 months to train an assistance dog. For the most part, PAD works with dogs 3 years old or younger and generally with dogs from the Labrador retriever, golden retriever and standard poodle breeds. “They are typically the breeds that are easiest to train,” said Zoccola. “They wa n t to b e fo l l o we rs . They’re accepted by the community, and they’re a fit size-wise for most clients. But each dog is different.” It costs anywhere between $15,000 and $20,000 to train an assistance dog, but PAD places its assistance dogs for about $2,500. That difference is made up through fundraising and donations from the community. “I love what we do, but it’s exhausting,” said Zoccola. “The pressure of fundraising is something I don’t think I understood when I first started. But I have realized that this is my calling and it’s work that needs to be done.” And the need is great. PAD currently has a waiting list of four years for its assistance dogs. “It’s a huge need. The nonprofit relies heavily on five volunteer puppy raisers to work with the canines. “ These dogs make an impact on other people’s lives,” said Lindsay Edwards, PAD’s breeder coordinator. “Time is the most invaluable resource, and it can impact the community,” said Zoccola. “Our program has seen a drastic downfall of support - donations and volunteers - since COVID.” After working at Susquehanna Ser vice Dogs for nine years, Zoccola founded PAD in 2009. “My friends encouraged me to train service dogs,” said Zoccola. “I’m in a wheelchair full time, and when I was 16, I got my See PAD pg 7

Piercing Word from pg 1 lowing the death of Jesus Christ. “‘Passion: The Musical’ is presented in a modern, urban style and depicts the Last Supper, the crucifixion and the resurrection of Jesus, compiled from all four Gospels,” House said. “It’s a really powerful presentation of the events of Holy Week.” Piercing Word’s performances generally draw about 100 spectators. “A lot of our audience is made up of people from Lancaster who have been with us on our journey,” said House. “But there are still a lot of people from
NIGHT
Lancaster County who haven’t experienced Scripture performed live on a stage.” Piercing Word employs four staff members full time and works with 70 contracted performers. House founded Piercing Word in 2007 in Houston, and the organization became a full-time ministry six years later. In 2023, Piercing Word presented Scripture performances at churches, colleges, special events and conferences in 15 states. Every year, the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation’s Environmental Center offers an educational program series on maple trees and their syrup.
If you’ve lived in southeastern Pennsylvania for more than a year, you are likely familiar with the region’s inconsistent weather patter ns that accompany the changing of the seasons. As winter draws to a close ever y year, the frigid nights are contrasted with war m days, confusing local wildlife and Lancastrians alike. Although it might be inconvenient for residents to leave the house with a warm jacket they won’t need for another 12 hours, the erratic weather makes the area a perfect place
to find nature’s sweetest treat: maple syrup. Maple trees that are located in cold climates accumulate sap in their trunks and roots to prepare for winter. In early spring, the trees convert the sap’s starch to sugar, after which it is pumped throughout their branches to grow new leaves. The process relies on the alternating daytime and nighttime temperatures to distribute the stored tree sap, as the repeated thawing and refreezing of the liquid allows it to flow to other parts of the tree. Maple trees can be found in other states such as Georgia, but their warm climates
render the sap unable to be harvested. For nearly 50 years, the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation’s Environmental Center has organized an annual series to explain the process of extracting maple syrup. Park naturalists host the series at Lancaster County Central Park, where they discuss the history of maple syrup and its many products. After an interactive demonstration that includes tapping a tree and boiling its sap, guests are traditionally invited to sample freshly made maple sugar candy. T his year, the maple

sugaring series will kick off on Saturday, Feb. 24. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., visitors may stop by Pavilion 11 at Lancaster County Central Park, 733 Williamson Road, Lancaster, to participate in educational activities with senior naturalists such as Lisa Sanchez. Additional maple sugaring events will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 25, and Sunday, March 3. Homeschool groups are invited to schedule weekday sessions online. For more information, visit http://tinyurl. com/lancmaplesyrup. “Natural maple sugar is a combination of sucrose and fructose, and it has a lower glycemic index because of how your body breaks it down,” said Sanchez, who has been making maple candy for 30 years. “It also contains vitamins and minerals like iron, calcium and magnesium, which you only get from something made the process of photosynthesis.” Sanchez will also give a presentation on maple syrup at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 15, at the Quarryville Library Center, 357 Buck Road, Quarryville. To register, visit http:// tinyurl.com/librarysyrup.
