Library To Host Read-A-Thon

OnSaturday, March 18, the Manheim Community Library will be abuzz with the voices of readers. The library will host its inaugural Read-A-Thon, with guest readers sharing books on various topics in 15-minute intervals from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will be held in the library, 15 E. High St., Manheim.

“We’re really excited about this,” said Jes Wagner, community relations coordinator for the library. “It’s a unique day designed to be about the library and the community. We’re excited about partnering with organizations and

Northwest EMS Seeks Scholarship Applicants

If you live in the Manheim Central School District and you plan to pursue higher education in the medical field, Northwest EMS has a scholarship for you. The Robert C. Stirling Memorial Scholarship is offered annually to high school seniors or adults, said Lori Shenk, community outreach manager for Northwest EMS. The deadline for applying is Friday, March 17.

The scholarship is named for Stirling, who volunteered with Manheim Veterans Ambulance Association for more than 30 years. The owner of an insurance business, Stirling was very active in community and civic groups. In the early 1960s, he assisted a volunteer ambulance crew at the scene of a car accident outside his home on East High Street. One of the ambulance association’s See Scholarship pg 3

people in our community.”

Participants will include library staff members and local business owners, as well as local authors, including Mike Gerhard, David Hegedus and Trudy Sine, and Hillary Daecher. Representatives from the Manheim Borough Police Department, Manheim Fire Department and Northwest EMS will also read, as will Genna Eberly, the Manheim Farm Show queen, and Steven Courtney, a local musician. “We’re encouraging our readers to read a book that relates to them or their profession,” Wagner shared.

The event is designed to be a fundraiser for the library, with

donation jars set up to encourage patrons to support the library, but donating is not required, Wagner said. “Everyone is welcome to just come and hear a story,” she stated. Proceeds from the Read-A-Thon will be used to support library programming, she said, noting that about half of the library’s funding comes from business sponsors, community members and the library’s Friends group. “We definitely need the community’s support in order to operate,” Wagner said, noting that the day is also an opportunity for the library to promote its services in the community. “We don’t have a specific financial goal for the day. We just want to spread

awareness of the library and that we need your support.”

In addition to donating at the library during the event, supporters can give online at https://manheim library.org/read-a-thon or may text the word “READ” to 855-202-2100 to receive a link to give online.

Although the event is open to people of all ages, it’s geared toward children and families as most of the books read will be picture books, Wagner said.

She encourages everyone to come out for the Read-A-Thon and noted that updates, including announcements of guest readers, will be posted regularly on the library’s Facebook and Instagram pages.

founding members, Clarence “Mike” Graham, was on-site that day, and he asked Stirling to ride along and assist with the transport of the patient. That incident led to Stirling’s three-decade involvement as a volunteer with the association. When he passed away in 1994, his family and the ambulance association created a scholarship in Stirling’s name. Since Northwest EMS merged with the ambulance association in 2013, Northwest has continued to offer the scholarship with the same criteria originally envisioned by the Stirling family and the ambulance association.

“We give away at least one $1,000 scholarship each year, but we may give up to two,” Shenk remarked. She noted that she typically gets anywhere from 10 to 20 applications for the scholarship. Applicants must be accepted into a post-high school education program at a college, tech or trade school. Such programs include nursing, radiology technician and traditional college with a major in a health care-related field. The scholarship is awarded in the spring and is paid directly to the winner’s school in time for the fall semester.

A committee reviews the applications and chooses the

winner or winners based on criteria such as the content of the written portion of the application, transcripts, personal references and financial need. “It’s a simple application with two short essays,” Shenk noted. “It does not take long to complete.” She emphasized that for the best chances of being chosen, applicants should clearly follow all directions in the application packet.

Applications are available at Manheim Central High School. They can also be obtained by emailing Shenk at lshenk@nwems86.org or stopping by Northwest EMS, 60 W. Colebrook St., Manheim.

Hoffman Named To Dean’s List Film Screening, Discussion Planned

Isaiah Hoffman of Manheim was named to the dean’s list for the fall semester of the 2021-22 academic year by the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Hoffman was recognized by the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences for his academic excellence.

To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must complete a minimum of 12 graded degree credits in that semester. Each university school or college sets its own grade point average requirements for students to be eligible to receive the distinction.

The Arts at Millersville University’s On Screen/In Person Film Series, in partnership with the MU Disability Film Series, will present “I Didn’t See You There” on Tuesday, Feb. 21, in Steinman Hall at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The event will feature a panel discussion at 6:15 p.m., a screening of the 90-minute film at 7 p.m. and an in-person question-andanswer session with filmmaker Reid Davenport.

In “I Didn’t See You There,” Davenport shows how he sees the world, from either his wheelchair or his two feet, without having to be seen himself. The unexpected arrival of a circus tent outside his apartment in Oakland, Calif., leads him to consider the history and legacy of P.T. Barnum’s Freak Show.

“I Didn’t See You There,” Davenport’s first feature film, won the Directing Award for U.S. Documentary at the 2022

Sundance Film Festival, the Grand Jury Prize at Full Frame Documentary Film Festival and the McBaine Bay Area Documentary Award at the San Francisco International Film Festival. It was scheduled to have a national broadcast on POV in January.

Panelists in the community discussion will include Jaclyn Nagle, executive director of the Disability Empowerment Center; Blue Guckert, a Millersville University (MU) student and president of MUADAPT; Jessica Hughes, assistant professor of communication and disability studies at MU; and Marco Di Giulio, associate professor of Hebrew language and literature at Franklin & Marshall College.

The event is free and open to the public. To obtain tickets, call the box office at 717-8717600, visit www.ArtsMU.com or visit the box office at the Ware Center or the Student Memorial Center on the MU campus. Any remaining tickets will be available at the door.

AHA Advocates Hands-only CPR

During American Heart Month, February, the American Heart Association (AHA) is urging at least one person in every household across central Pennsylvania to learn hands-only CPR.

If a teen or adult suddenly collapses, make sure the scene is safe, then call 911 immediately and ask someone to get an AED, if available. Next, place

one hand on top of the other and push hard and fast in the center of the victim’s chest at a rate of 100 to 120 beats per minute, until the AED or emergency services arrive.

Performing chest compressions to the beat of a familiar song is a good way to ensure they are done at the correct rate. Songs at the required tempo include “Stayin’ Alive”

by the Bee Gees, “Crazy in Love” by Beyoncé featuring Jay-Z, “Hips Don’t Lie” by Shakira and “Walk the Line” by Johnny Cash. More songs are available on the American Heart Association’s “Don’t Drop the Beat” Spotify playlist. Anyone can learn handsonly CPR from a 60-second video available at www.heart.org/handsonlycpr.

Award Winning

All creatures, all species need a place to call their own, a place to call home. But that’s especially true for a species as social and territorial as Canis lupus.

The Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania, 465 Speedwell Forge Road, Lititz, is currently an adopted home for 54 displaced gray wolves and wolfdogs. All of the resident wolves are rescues, from different settings and difficult circumstances in places like Colorado, California, Florida, Canada and even more remote areas of Pennsylvania.

For most, the Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania is their final stop, their forever home.

“We provide a lifelong home for displaced wolves,” said Michelle Mancini, the Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania’s education coordinator. “They resemble their domestic relatives, but they don’t thrive in household settings. They’re built to live outdoors. They all come to us from different settings, but the most common is household settings. We also have wolves from a handful of other settings like zoos.”

Appropriately enough, more than 80 acres of natural woodlands west of Brick-

erville serve as the setting for the Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania. Its wolf population is broken down into pairs or packs based on demeanors and personalities, then housed in fenced-in outdoor areas of 1 to 3 acres in size.

“There’s a lot of mystery surrounding wolves,” said Mancini. “They’re very important to their ecosystems. They’re super intelligent. They don’t respond well to training, but they do well in problem-solving. And they’re super strong.”

“As individuals, wolves are interesting to learn about,” Mancini continued. “They’re social, but it takes a long time for them to build trust. Some wolves may be very shy when they get here. Some may trust us over a long period of time, but we don’t force anything.”

The Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania was formally founded as a refuge in 1980 by Bill and Barbara Darlington. After laws governing the possession of exotic animals changed, the Wolf Sanctuary became inundated with more and more rescue requests.

In 1993, the Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania was opened to the public and was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Artists.” He created each piece by reconstructing and enhancing a reproduction of artwork by a favorite artist and then adding the artist’s portrait in the foreground. Swarr, who has a teaching background in art history, created the pieces after researching photos and paintings done by the artists.

Swarr will also exhibit his “Musical Celebrities” series at a Makers Market on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 25 and 26, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Linden Hall gymnasium during the Fire & Ice Festival in downtown Lititz. Linden Hall is located at 212 E. Main St.

He began each of these collage-type paintings with a background depicting sheet music for a song made famous by the celebrity he planned to paint. Swarr was inspired by the celebrities’ facial expressions, and his goal was to portray a visual image of the feelings that people have in their hearts and minds when they first get to know a celebrity or legendary personality.

Barons Clinch Section Title With Win Over Solanco

Not all wins will clinch a playoff spot, secure a championship or even propel a team to more victories but sometimes they do. Take the Manheim Central girls basketball team and their 64-30 demolition of Solanco on February 3rd. It was the Lady Barons 11th straight win and ensured Central the outright Section Two title, earning Manheim a spot in the L-L playoffs.

Central controlled all four quarters, starting with a 16-3 romp through the opening frame. Solanco was able to get their offense going in the second and third quarters, scoring a combined 21 points but that was not enough as Manheim was busy adding 33 to their opening tally. Add in a 15-6 fourth quarter run and the Lady Barons enjoyed a 34point victory. Maddie Knier netted a game high 21 while Kaylie Kroll added 14 and Abbie Reed 10.

Manheim Central kept their winning streak intact with an impressive 40-17 win over Lampeter-Strasburg on the 4th. That pushed the streak to 12 straight with wins in 18 of their last 19 games, after opening the season 0-2.

Knier was the lone Lady Baron in double digits with another 21-point effort. The bulk of that work came in the opening quarter with Knier scoring 11 during the 13-0 blitz. Lampeter-Strasburg was able to get on the board in the second, but Manheim still stretched their lead to 23-5 at the break. An 8-8 third frame led into a 9-4 Central run to close out the contest and give the Lady Barons the 40-17 win.

BOWLING

The regular season came to a close for the bowling team with wins over Garden Spot and Ephrata pushing Central to a 72-40 mark while securing a spot in the Lancaster-Lebanon League Team Championships.

The Barons closed out the regular season on February 7th with a 7-0 win over Ephrata. A few days prior, Central slipped by Spot 5-2. Jesse Hurst improved each game to finish with a 559 series while Ethan Howard started with a 211 and fished

with a 171, giving the senior a team high 587 series. Landen Statts was the final Baron to break 500, posting games of 157, 170 and 210 to finish with a 537. Hailey Kowalski was the final three game bowler, posting a 498. Asher Harris (359) and Aston Fritz (123) teamed up to cover the final scoring slot for Manheim.

SWIMMING

“It was great to end the regular season with wins!” was the simple summary head coach Heather Fittery offered when asked about the Barons double wins over Lancaster Catholic on February 2nd. The boys claimed a 92-38 victory while the Lady Barons posted a 61-43 win.

Manheim took two of the three relays on the boys’ side with Anderson Pilsner, Chase Kirchner, Bryce Steach and Bryce Garber opening the meet with a win in the 200medley relay. Ryan Moreno joined Kirchner, Pilsner and Garber to take the 200-free relay in 1:41.39 for Manheim’s second and final relay victory. Pilsner added solo wins in the 100-butterfly and 200 IM while Garber enjoyed wins in the 50-free and 100backstroke. Avery Kirchner also nabbed two events wins, taking the 200-free and 500free while Chase Kirchner tacked on one last win in the 100-breaststroke.

The Lady Barons claimed the same two relay events with Samara Bucher, Anna Horst, Ashley Mellinger and Chloe Enck teaming for the 200 medley relay.

Gabrielle Fittery joined Enck, Horst and Mellinger for the 200freestyle relay. Mellinger added solo wins in the 100-butterfly and 200 IM with Fittery matching the double with her 100-free and 200-free victories. Enck accounted for the final win, taking the 50-freestyle.

RIFLE

The rifle team wrapped up the regular season with a win over Manheim Township and a loss to Ephrata, putting the Barons in a three-way tie for first

place with the Blue Streaks and Mountaineers. Central was poised to take the title outright thanks to a 596-595 win over Township on February 2nd but a 496-495 loss to Ephrata on the 7th squashed those outright title hopes, forcing Manheim Central to share the crown.

The two Manheim schools needed six shooters to decide a winner with Alexa Hoffman’s 99 the deciding score.

Natalia Winkler, Andrew Waddington and Kyria Martin

matched Hoffman’s 99 while Genna Eberly and Caleb Creviston led the way with perfect 100s.

The regular season came to a close on the 7th with that one point loss to Ephrata putting Manheim at 10-4 on the year. Eberly posted another perfect match with Martin joining her. Creviston posted the lone 99 with Nate Sauder and Aubrey Myers joining the scorers with their 98s.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

The boys’ basketball team

stepped out of the L-L to kick off February, hosting Kennard-Dale on the 1st. The Rams survived 36 points from Trey Grube to slip out of town a 68-66 winner. Grube drilled seven from long range with his offense helping Central to a quick 16-6 lead as well as a 20-18 edge in the final frame. In between Kennard-Dale managed a 44-30 advantage that secured the two-point victory. Sam Witmer added 11 in the loss.

The Barons returned to the

L-L for a February 3rd clash with Solanco. Central used a 24-7 romp through the opening frame to take control, tacking on a 13-3 second quarter run for good measure. Solanco was able to trim that 37-10 halftime lead just a bit with a slim 10-8 edge in the third, but Manheim regrouped for a 9-5 advantage in the fourth, putting the final at 54-25. Grube netted a team high 17 while Aaron Enterline chipped in with 13 points.

Pelvic Health

At Overlook Park, Humans Are Dogs’ Best Friend

If indeed the symbiotic relationship between humans and dogs exists, then we must take care of them much to the same degree that they take care of us. We have a certain responsibility to do what’s right for our canine friends, to do what’s best for them.

It’s that exact philosophy upon which Overlook Dog Park is based. It’s a special place where dogs can run and play, a space where dogs and their owners can interact or mingle, simply a place where dogs can be dogs.

Located at 2215 Fruitville Pike and part of Overlook Park, the Overlook Dog Park is managed by Manheim Township. Leashes are optional, but diligently cleaning up what’s been left behind is always a good idea.

Some veterinarians recommend that domestic dogs be walked 20 minutes twice every day.

“I don’t believe there are too many (dog parks) in the county,” said Harry Norton, Manheim Township’s adult and family program manager. “Just like

anybody, dogs need exercise to burn off energy and just for their overall health. At the dog park, some people will stay for 10 minutes, and some will stay for an hour. But not all dogs are dog-park dogs.”

The 5-acre Overlook Dog Park is divided into three distinct areas: a common area for all dogs, an area for dogs under 30 pounds and an area for dogs over 30 pounds. The dog park boasts about 700 members, and approximately 70% of them are residents of Manheim Township.

“It’s a fun place. People come and enjoy it,” said Norton. “The park’s mission is to provide a safe area for dogs and their owners, give people an opportunity to unleash their dogs and, when appropriate, mingle with other dogs and their owners. We just want people and dogs to enjoy the area.”

Overlook Dog Park membership rates vary based upon residency, with a discount for Manheim Township residents. The dog park uses a key fob

system to provide entry into the park, and all dogs must be licensed and vaccinated.

Overlook is a dawn-to-dusk dog park. There are 17 rules governing the use of the dog park.

“I think the activity there is just about right,” said Norton. “From 6:30 to 8:30 (a.m.), we get a lot of heavy use. During the day, it’s much lighter, as far as activity goes. Then from 4 to 7:30 (p.m.), it’s packed again.”

Through the efforts of the local civic organization Manheim Township Dog Owners Group (MTDOG), Overlook

Dog Park opened in 2006 with

250 members. By the end of 2016, MTDOG had disbanded, and the operation and maintenance of Overlook Dog Park was turned over to Manheim Township.

“We operate 13 parks throughout the township, and there are a lot of folks who walk their dogs in those parks,” said Norton. “People need to know that the dog park is there. It’s open to the public. It’s a big, grassy area. It’s a place where dogs can run and enjoy the open space.”

For additional information about Overlook Dog Park, go to www.manheimtownship.org.

An Artist’s View Of Lancaster

In early 2019, Linda Dibartolo and Bill Heagy Sr., owners of Tannery Antiques, 148 E. Main St., New Holland, were contacted by members of the board of the Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association (ULTWMA) building, 54 W. Main St., Leola. The board wanted to move three paintings by local artist Milton E. Denlinger located in the basement of the building. After several months of negotiations, the 12.5-by-4.5-foot paintings had found a new home near the front of the couple’s shop.

“They are painted on Masonite, so they are heavy,” said Dibartolo, who added that it takes six people to move each painting.

Denlinger, who lived from 1909 to 1991, was a Soudersburg resident who sold paintings from his shop on Route 30 near Paradise. He took lessons from local painters as

far east as Philadelphia, and he worked in watercolors and pastels, as well as oils. He was known for his murals, including one of Christ that is still hanging in the Akron United Zion Church.

The three murals stored in the ULTWMA building were commissioned by Noah E. Martin in 1953 to hang in the ULTWMA building, then called the Leola Community Building. While the paintings depict seasonal scenes of Lancaster County, they are also historical, representing a chronological sequence of the area from the 1700s to beyond the 1950s. The winter scene, which is set in the 1700s, includes a red barn and a covered bridge all decorated in a layer of white. The summer scene, which harkens to the 1800s, depicts a steam train, a one-room schoolhouse, and a swimming hole. Autumn shows Lancaster County in 1953, with a glimpse into the future by featuring superhigh-

ways, a diesel train, and powered farm equipment.

Dibartolo said she and Heagy have delved into the story behind the pieces, noting they were painted in the living room of Denlinger’s ranch-style home in only a few weeks each. Each painting has a Bible verse on the frame. For instance, the winter scene quotes Matthew 5:5, which begins with “Blessed are the meek.” On the backs, Denlinger wrote his name, the year, and other information, including, “Theme … ‘How Dear Are the Scenes of My Childhood.’” Dibartolo has studied the paintings, and she pointed out Denlinger’s thumbprints in the smoke of

Sanctuary frompg 6

“Our secondary mission is education,” said Mancini. “We really want to foster a pride for the animal. People either adore them or fear them.”

Not only are guided walking tours of the Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania available,

they’re encouraged. The tours require reservations and serve as both an educational tool and a fundraising mechanism for the refuge. For additional information about volunteering or donating, go to www.wolf sanctuarypa.org.

Women’s Garden Club Will Meet

The Women’s Garden Club of Lancaster County will meet at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 23, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 301 St. Thomas Road, Lancaster. During the meeting, Master Gardener Eudora Roseman will present “Local Ephemeral Plants,” a program

on the many early spring, short-lived bloomers and where in nature they can be found. She will also share information on purchasing plants such as trillium and blood root.

Guests are welcome to attend for a nominal donation.

the steam engine and the fact that in each one someone is waving to the viewer. She also noted the impressionist technique Denlinger used that makes the paintings clearer from a distance than they are up close. Dibartolo noted the lavender hues of the sky in one painting and the shadows on the water in another. “Aren’t they beautiful?” she commented.

Dibartolo and Heagy would like to see the paintings go to an appropriate home within Lancaster County. To contact someone at Tannery Antiques, readers may visit www.reallancastercounty.com or search for “Tannery Antiques LLC” on Facebook.

The Years

Under the musical direction of trumpeter Riley Mulherkar and featuring vocalists Vuyo Sotashe, Brianna Thomas, and Shenel Johns, the ensemble will present songs from Ma Rainey, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Judy Garland and others. The sextet accompanying Mulherkar and the vocalists includes trombonist Mariel Bildsten, saxophonist Lucas Pino, pianist Mathis Picard, bassist Barry Stephenson and drummer Taurien “TJ” Reddick.
